ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL Norfolk, VA Rev. Presbyter George Bessinas, M.Div., Dean Rev. Protopresbyter Constantine Rogakos, Ph. D., Associate SUNDAY BULLETIN AND WEEKLY NEWS The Feast of St. Symeon the New Theologian Sunday of the 7th Ecumenical Council Sunday, October 12, 2014
Sunday, October 12, 2014 Orthros: Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom 8:45 AM 10:00 AM On October 12, we commemorate the holy Martyrs Provos, Tarachos, and Andronikos; the holy victorious Martyr Domnina; the holy Martyr Anastasia the Virgin; the holy seventy Martyrs died by the sword; Saint Theodotos, Bishop of Ephesos, died in peace; the holy Martyrs Malphetha, Anthia, and the Martyrs Juventinus, Maximus, Andromachos, and Diodoros, died by the sword and by fire; Saint Jason, Bishop of Damascus, died in peace; the memory the holy and blessed Fathers who convened in Nicea for a second time, under the Orthodox and Christ-loving emperors Constantine and Irene, against those who in an impious, uneducated, and thoughtless manner said that the Church of God practiced idolatry and who had taken down the august and holy icons. Resurrectional APOLYTIKION Mode 1 The stone had been secured with a seal by the Judeans, and a guard of soldiers was watching Your immaculate body. Yourose on the third day, O Lord and Savior, granting life unto the world. And therefore the powers of heaven cried to You, O Giver-of-Life Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ; glory to Your kingdom; glory to Your dispensation, only One who loves mankind. APOLYTIKION of Annunciation Today is the beginning of our salvation, The revelation of the eternal mystery! The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin. As Gabriel announces the coming of Grace. Together with him let us cry to the Theotokos: Rejoice, O Full of Grace, The Lord is with You! Seasonal KONTAKION O Protection of Christians unshamable, mediation with the Creator immovable, we sinners beg you, do not despise the voices of our prayers, but anticipate, since you are good, and swiftly come unto our aid as we cry out to you with faith: Hurry to intercession, and hasten to supplication, O Theotokos who defend now and ever those who honor you.
THE EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15 Prokeimenon Mode 4. The Prayer of Azariah. Blessed are You, O Lord God of our fathers, for You are praiseworthy and exalted beyond measure unto the ages. TITUS, my son, the sa ying is su re. I de si re you to in si st on the se things, so that tho se who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselve s to good deeds; the se are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controve rsie s, genealogies, di ssen sion s, and quarrel s ove r the law, fo r they a re unprofitable and futile. A s for a man who is fa ctiou s, afte r admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a pe rson i s perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artema s o r Tychico s to you, do your be st to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter the re. Do your be st to speed Zena s the lawye r and Apollos on their wa y; see that they lack nothing. And let ou r people learn to apply themselve s to good deeds, so a s to help case s of u rgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet tho se who love u s in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. THE GOSPEL READING The Go spel of Luke 8:5-15 The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
