Archangel Michael Church Η Εκκλησία του Αρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ 100 Fairway Drive, Port Washington, NY 11050 Phone: (516) 944-3180 Web Site: www.archangelmichaelchurch.org Clergy: Fr. John Lardas, Fr. Joshua Pappas, Fr. Dennis Strouzas Dec. 18, 2016 Sunday Before Nativity 1 st Mode 4 th Morning Gospel Today s gospel passage is one of the longest of the year, and most of it consists of peculiar names from the Old Testament. Why does St. Matthew devote so much ink to the genealogy of Christ? He s writing to Jews who believed in Christ as Messiah. They didn t consider themselves outside Judaism but firmly within it; for them, Christ was simply the fulfillment of Judaism, not the beginning of a new religion. First century Jews and this is also true for us today could properly understand Christ as Messiah only in light of the greater context of Israel s salvation history (i.e. the content of the Old Testament). Expectations about the nature of Christ s messiahship varied, but one thing was clear: the Messiah, or Anointed One, would descend from the line of Abraham and David. Why? God s covenant/promise to bring universal salvation began with Abraham, the so-called father of all believers. David was a great king, prophet, and composer of many of the Psalms; the Messiah would introduce a new kingship as a descendent of David. Therefore, St. Matthew uses the genealogy of Christ to legitimize Him as Messiah in the hearts and minds of fervent first century Jews. Christ is the fulfillment of all prophecies, the fulfillment of God s promises, the fulfillment of Torah Law. Christ wraps up the story of salvation laid out in the Old Testament and introduces a new way of living, the Kingdom of God breaking into this world. While St. Matthew correctly traced Christ to Abraham and David, he still faced a seemingly insurmountable obstacle with most Jews. They expected a Messiah who would bring an end to their suffering, a Messiah who would overthrow Roman rule and re-establish the Israelite nation as a political powerhouse. Christ s messiahship, however, is in line with the suffering servant of Isaiah s prophecy. It s grounded in humility, in submission, in serving, in stooping down to our level, in taking on the pain of others, in self-emptying love. Elder Aimilianos explains: Man has difficulty bowing down to God; so God, in His infinite humility, bows down to man. On the night He was betrayed, Christ set aside his garments, and stooped down to wash the feet of a man who would deny him three times. That s how God was with the people of Israel. That s how He is with everyone. When we look at the history of God s actions from the beginning of the Old Testament to the end of the New, what do we see? God diminishes Himself. Everywhere and at all times, God reduces Himself; He makes Himself small. He humbles Himself and does whatever is necessary so that we might be saved. -Elder Aimilianos of Mount Athos

Saints and Feasts On the Sunday before the Nativity, we celebrate all those who from ages past have been wellpleasing to God, from Adam to Joseph the Betrothed of the Most Holy Theotokos, as the Evangelist Luke recorded (Luke 3:23-38); all Prophets and Prophetesses, especially the Prophet Daniel and the Holy Three Children; the holy martyr Sebastian and his companions; our devout father Michael the Confessor. Resurrectional Hymn (1 st Mode) The stone had been secured with a seal by the Judeans * and a guard of soldiers was watching Your immaculate body. * You rose on the third day, O Lord * and Savior, granting life to the world. * Therefore the powers of heaven cried to You, O Lifegiver * Glory to Your resurrection, O Christ; * glory to Your kingdom; * glory to Your dispensation, only One who loves mankind. Hymn of the Saint/Feast (2 nd Mode) Magnificent are Faith's accomplishments! The three holy Youths exultingly stood in the fountain of fire as if beside the still waters of rest. And Daniel the Prophet was shown to be a shepherd of lions. At their entreaty, O Christ God, save our souls. Hymn of the Archangels Supreme Commanders of * the hosts of the Heavens * we, the unworthy, importune and beseech you * that by your supplications you encircle us * in the shelter of the wings * of your heavenly glory * guarding us who now fall down * and cry to you with fervor. * Deliver us from dangers of all kinds, * as the great marshals * of the heavenly hosts on high. Kontakion of the Feast On this day the Virgin goes * to the cave and gives birth to * God the Word ineffably, * Who was before all the ages. * Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing * the gladsome tidings; * with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him * Who is willing to appear as * a newborn Child Who * before the ages is God.

Today s Scripture Readings St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:9-10; 32-40 BRETHREN, by faith Abraham sojourned in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city which has foundation, whose builder and maker is God. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets - who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. The Gospel according to Matthew 1:1-25 The book of the Genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa, and Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. ( continued on next page)

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel"(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.
