Find the gospel picture and develop it before everything else! 2015 Fall Pastor/Teacher Conference - October 14-16, 2015 - Leavenworth, WA 1 Peter 1:13-25 Rev. Timothy M. Schwartz Context:1:1-3 To the strangers in a strange land set apart for two reasons: 1) obedience 2) sprinkling of the blood of Jesus. 3-9 You have been born into a new, eternal life, though for now it is impossible to see through your trials that have value in that they refine your faith. 10-12 The prophets researched grace, prophesied by the power of the Spirit of Christ s sufferings and glories and have passed their work on to you in the heavenly gospel you now hear. 13 For this reason, be ready to learn, completely serious, and put your hope on the grace being brought to you in the revelation of Jesus Christ.? Διὸ - For this reason: suffering? You have a heavenly message angels love to look into? You are next in line after the prophets for proclaiming the gospel? ἀναζωσάμενοι τὰς ὀσφύας cinch up the girds of your mind culturally equal to roll up your sleeves for mental action. 1 Doris Panning: Put on your thinking caps Be ready to learn. Luke 12:35 (HCSB) 35 Be ready for service and have your lamps lit. Children of Israel on Passover ready to do something because God saved you. νήφοντες concessive participle P Ac - to behave with restraint and moderation, thus not permitting excess to be selfcontrolled 2? φερομένην: Present tense being brought to you most translations treat this as future why? God s grace is constantly revealed to us in the Scriptures as Peter just explained Application: It s the one who prepares when there are other more enjoyable things to do who ends up enjoying the fruits of labor in the end. Proverbs on work? In light of the heavenly gospel given to us in the middle of suffering, believers are to constantly, intensely take the threat of sin seriously and put their hope in Jesus Christ, as revealed. 14 τέκνα ὑπακοῆς children of obedience : look up this use of the Genitive 1 Swanson, J. 14 ὡς τέκνα ὑπακοῆς μὴ συσχηματιζόμενοι ταῖς πρότερον ἐν τῇ ἀγνοίᾳ ὑμῶν ἐπιθυμίαις 14 Just like obedient children, do not conform to your former passions in ignorance. 15 ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸν καλέσαντα ὑμᾶς ἅγιον καὶ αὐτοὶ ἅγιοι ἐν πάσῃ ἀναστροφῇ γενήθητε, 15 However, in line with the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves in every instance of your conduct. πρότερον ἐν τῇ ἀγνοίᾳ ὑμῶν ἐπιθυμίαις a) to your former passions in ignorance or b) the passions you used to give into when you were ignorant Is Peter treating their ignorance as something past or potentially future? Putting hope in the gospel means obeying God as children do when they are told they don t need to do something any more and they listen. Illustration: Letting go of toys. A mother takes all the toys and piles them in the living room and says, I ve given you each a toy box. Whatever does not fit, goes in the yard sale. The child must decide what is useful and what he has outgrown or is damaged. Christ is our box being new people does not mean that stop all of our behavior, but that whatever does not fit, what we ve outgrown, what is damaging, we don t need. Romans 1:5 (HCSB) 5 We have received grace and apostleship through Him to bring about the obedience of faith among all the nations, on behalf of His name, Appropriation: Child like faith does not mean ignorance. Kids are smart (example). It does mean going along with even painful loss if your parent, your Savior says This is good. Similar to a child s trust in a parent, our trust moves us to give up things once we know God and the harm that sinful passion does. ἀναστροφῇ 2 Timothy 3:10 (HCSB) 10 But you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, and endurance, 2 Corinthians 1:12 (HCSB) 12 For this is our confidence: The testimony of our conscience is that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, with God-given sincerity and purity, not by fleshly wisdom but by God s grace. con duct: the manner in which a person behaves, especially on a particular occasion or in a particular context. 16 διότι γέγραπται [ὅτι] Ἅγιοι ἔσεσθε, ὅτι ἐγὼ ἅγιός [εἰμι]. 16 For it is written: Be holy, because I am holy. Leviticus 11:44 45 (HCSB) 44 For I am Yahweh your God, so you must consecrate yourselves and be holy because I am holy. You must not defile yourselves by any swarming creature that crawls on the ground. 45 For I am Yahweh, who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God, so you must be holy because I am holy. - Prohibition against eating, touching, anything that comes
into contact with dead animal or swarming birds. Leviticus 19:2 (HCSB) 2 Speak to the entire Israelite community and tell them: Be holy because I, Yahweh your God, am holy. - Specific applications to the Ten Words fellowship offerings, gleaning, oppression, in-court justice Leviticus 20:7 (HCSB) 7 Consecrate yourselves and be holy, for I am Yahweh your God. - Prohibition against unfaithfulness in relation to God and family. Just based on these passages, holiness means to keep away from what is dirty, worship and look out of those who need help, be faithful to God and your family. Ref. Application: Luther thought that the true, holy life was a matter of the monastery he found that in faith, every day life is holy. We are to take after our saving God in that we conduct our lives in being holy. Luther on mind loins : This is an exhortation to faith. It means: Since things in which even the angels rejoice and which they are delighted to see have been proclaimed and given to you through the Gospel, cling to them and place full confidence in them, so that it is a genuine faith and not a colored or fictitious delusion and dream. 3 It is as if he were saying: You have now heard the Gospel and have come to faith. Therefore see to it that you remain in faith and not be moved by false doctrine, that you do not waver and run hither and thither with works. 4 On being sober: one finds many who have fasted themselves mad and have tortured themselves to death. Even though Saint Bernard was a saintly man, he, too, was afflicted for a time with such folly. He denied his body so much that his breath stank and he could not associate with people. Later, however, he came to his senses and also told his brothers not to hurt the body too much. For he realized that he had made himself unable to serve his brothers. 5 On being holy: The greatest work that comes from faith is this, that I confess Christ with my mouth and, if it has to be, bear testimony with my blood and risk my life. Yet God does not need the work; but I should do it to prove and confess my faith, in order that others, too, may be brought to faith. Then other works will follow. They must all tend to serve my neighbor. All this God must bring about in us. Therefore we should not make up our minds to begin to lead a carnal life and to do what we please. 6 3 4 5 6
17 Καὶ εἰ πατέρα ἐπικαλεῖσθε τὸν ἀπροσωπολήμπτως κρίνοντα κατὰ τὸ ἑκάστου ἔργον, ἐν φόβῳ τὸν τῆς παροικίας ὑμῶν χρόνον ἀναστράφητε, 17 And since you call upon a Father who makes decisions impartially, in line with each person s work, conduct yourself in fear during your temporary residence here. ἐπικρίνω: to come to a conclusion in the process of thinking and thus to be in a position to make a decision to come to a conclusion, to decide, to make up one s mind. 7 τῆς παροικίας ὑμῶν colloquially until your visa here expires God is ultimately fair, and, we ought to fear what happens if we don t make the most of our time here.? This does not sound like gospel motivation. In preaching on this text, ought we to A) Inject some gospel motivation into it? B) Apply this passage to our sinful nature only? C) Look harder in the text the gospel motivation is there.
