ΙΑΚΩΒΟΥ ΕΠΙΣΤΟΛΗ Β The Letter of James Chapter Two Keith L. Yoder Senior Research Fellow University of Massachusetts - Amherst English Translation and Oral Interpretation 2014 Keith L. Yoder Greek Text from Eberhard Nestle, Η ΚΑΙΝΗ ΔΙΑΘΗΚΗ, British and Foreign Bible Society, 1904 (Public Domain) Transcription from http://sites.google.com/site/nestle1904/
My brothers, have-not with respect-of-persons the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory. For if would-enter into your synagogue a man gold-fingered, in radiant clothing, but also would enter a poor-one in filthy clothing, 2:1 2:2 Ἀδελφοί μου, μὴ ἐν προσωπολημψίαις ἔχετε τὴν πίστιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τῆς δόξης ἐὰν γὰρ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς συναγωγὴν ὑμῶν ἀνὴρ χρυσοδακτύλιος ἐν ἐσθῆτι λαμπρᾷ, εἰσέλθῃ δὲ καὶ πτωχὸς ἐν ῥυπαρᾷ ἐσθῆτι,
and you gaze upon the one wearing the radiant clothing and say, You, sit here in a good-place and to the poor-one you say, You, stand there, or Sit under my foot-stool, have you not discriminated among yourselves, and become judges with evil intentions? 2:3 2:4 ἐπιβλέψητε δὲ ἐπὶ τὸν φοροῦντα τὴν ἐσθῆτα τὴν λαμπρὰν καὶ εἴπητε Σὺ κάθου ὧδε καλῶς, καὶ τῷ πτωχῷ εἴπητε Σὺ στῆθι ἐκεῖ, ἢ Κάθου ὑπὸ τὸ ὑποπόδιόν μου, οὐ διεκρίθητε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, καὶ ἐγένεσθε κριταὶ διαλογισμῶν πονηρῶν;
Listen, my beloved brothers! Has not God chosen the poor in the world (to be) rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which hepromised to those-who-love him? But you have dishonored the poorone! Are not the rich oppressing you, and are they not dragging you into courts? 2:5 2:6 Ἀκούσατε, ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί. οὐχ ὁ Θεὸς ἐξελέξατο τοὺς πτωχοὺς τῷ κόσμῳ πλουσίους ἐν πίστει καὶ κληρονόμους τῆς βασιλείας ἧς ἐπηγγείλατο τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν; ὑμεῖς δὲ ἠτιμάσατε τὸν πτωχόν. οὐχ οἱ πλούσιοι καταδυναστεύουσιν ὑμῶν, καὶ αὐτοὶ ἕλκουσιν ὑμᾶς εἰς κριτήρια;
Are not they insulting the good name which was called-out over you? 2:7 2:8 If you really complete (the) royal law, according to the Scripture, You-shall-love your neighbor as yourself, you do well. 2:9 But if you show-favoritism, you work sin, being-convicted by the law as transgressors.
2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles in one (thing) has-become liable for all, 2:11 for the one-saying Adulter not also said Murder not Now if you adulter not, but murder, you have-become a law transgressor. 2:12 Thus speak and thus do, as those-about-to be judged by the law of freedom.
For the judgment (is) merciless to the-one-not-doing mercy. 2:13 Mercy boasts-down over judgment! What is the merit my brothers, 2:14 if someone would say to have faith, but has not works? The faith is not able to save him, is it? 2:15 If a brother or sister is-going naked and is-lacking the daily food, ἡ γὰρ κρίσις ἀνέλεος τῷ μὴ ποιήσαντι ἔλεος κατακαυχᾶται ἔλεος κρίσεως.
and someone of you says to them Go-off in peace! Be-warmed and be-filled, but would-not-give to them the necessities of the body, what is the merit? 2:16 2:17 So also the faith, if it has not works, is dead, (being) by itself. But someone will-say (that) you have faith and I have works. Show me the faith of yours without the works, 2:18 εἴπῃ δέ τις αὐτοῖς ἐξ ὑμῶν Ὑπάγετε ἐν εἰρήνῃ, θερμαίνεσθε καὶ χορτάζεσθε, μὴ δῶτε δὲ αὐτοῖς τὰ ἐπιτήδεια τοῦ σώματος, τί τὸ ὄφελος; οὕτως καὶ ἡ πίστις, ἐὰν μὴ ἔχῃ ἔργα, νεκρά ἐστιν καθ ἑαυτήν.
and I will show you out-of the works of mine the faith! 2:18 (continued) You believe that the God is one. You are-doing well, even the demons believe and shudder! Do-you-want to know, O empty person, that the faith without the works is work-less? 2:19 2:20 κἀγώ σοι δείξω ἐκ τῶν ἔργων μου τὴν πίστιν. σὺ πιστεύεις ὅτι εἷς ἐστιν ὁ Θεός; καλῶς ποιεῖς καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια πιστεύουσιν καὶ φρίσσουσιν. θέλεις δὲ γνῶναι, ὦ ἄνθρωπε κενέ, ὅτι ἡ πίστις χωρὶς τῶν ἔργων ἀργή ἐστιν;
Abraham our father, was he not out-of works justified, when he offered Isaac his son upon the altar? You-see that the faith worked-together with his works, and out-of the works the faith was completed, 2:21 2:22 2:23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says But Abraham believed God and it-was-accounted to him for righteousness, and Friend of God he-was-called!
You-see that out-of works a human is-justified and not out-of faith alone! And likewise also Rahab the harlot, was she not out-of works justified 2:24 2:25 when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another way? Therefore, just-as the body without spirit is dead, so also the faith without works is dead!
