Message from Father George LIFT YOURSELF UP IN PRAYER This past Thursday our Catechism and Inquirer s class met for its sixth class session. The topic of discussion was Orthodox Worship and the Church Year, focusing on the Pre-Lenten, Lenten, and Pentecostarion seasons of the Church. My class lecture included the following quote from Father Alkiviadis Calivas: Prayer is the most sublime experience of the human soul, and worship is the most profound activity of the people of God. The key to this phrase is found in the two adjectives: sublime and profound. The word sublime means of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe. And, profound is described as (of a state, quality, or emotion) very great or intense. As humans, we are preoccupied by life s distractions. Our busy lives divert us from the most sublime, the most magnificent and majestic endeavor in which we could participate: prayer. When our demanding schedules deprive us of the most profound, the most intense, overwhelming, deep, and sincere experience of worship, it appears that a major life overhaul is truly necessary. Father Alkiviadis says, prayer is the essence of the Orthodox Christian way of life. It is the means by which one achieves communion with God. This communion is an essential part of our lives as an Orthodox Christian. Our Holy Church recommends that during this season of Great Lent we participate in our private prayer more regularly, and she also offers more opportunities to gather for corporate prayer: worship. There are just two weeks of Lent remaining, and your Church offers you occasions to gather to enter into this profound experience of the soul: the Divine services of the Church. On Monday we can participate in the Compline Service, which is a service of psalms and prayers that focuses on three things: thanksgiving for the day that has passed, protection for the ensuing night, and forgiveness of wrongs committed during the day. On Wednesday you may receive the Very Body and Blood of our Lord at the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts: a solemn Lenten Vespers Service with the administration of Holy Communion added to it. There is no consecration of the Eucharistic gifts at this liturgy. Holy Communion is given from the Eucharistic gifts sanctified on the previous Sunday. Your Holy Church - your spiritual home - is offering you sublime and profound experiences, opportunities to grow in your spiritual journey to Christ through the services of His Holy Church. See how the prayers, psalms, and hymns of the Church might touch your heart and elevate your mind to new heights. STEWARDSHIP 2017 With Great Lent well underway and our Lord's Holy Pascha approaching, thoughts and inclinations naturally encourage the faithful to be more involved in the life of the Church. This includes praying, fasting, alms giving, attending services, and receiving Holy Communion more frequently. It is also an excellent opportunity to go ahead and make your 2017 pledge, if you have not already done so. For those that have made a pledge, many thanks for your generosity.

Resurrection Apolytikion Plagal Tone 4 You descended from on high, O compassionate One, and condescended to be buried for three days, so that from the passions You might set us free. Our life and resurrection, O Lord, glory be to You. Apolytikion of St. Mary Plagal Tone 4 In you the image was preserved with exactness, O Mother; for taking up your cross, you followed Christ, and by your deeds you taught us to overlook the flesh, for it passes away, but to attend to the soul since it is immortal. Wherefore, O righteous Mary, your spirit rejoices with the Angels. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Tone 2 O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, Intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwavering, reject not, the prayerful cries of those who are in sin. Instead, come to us, for you are good; Your loving help bring unto us, Who are crying in faith to you: Hasten to intercede and speed now to supplicate, as a protection for all time, Theotokos, for those who honor you.

THE EPISTLE St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 9:11 14 Pray and return to the Lord Your God; all around Him shall bring gifts. In Judah God is known; His name is great in Israel. BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? THE GOSPEL Mark 10:32 45 At that time, Jesus taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
