Editorial EN TrueWind Detox from GREED With the help of a friend, a respectable scientist, I was trying to think of a period in the history of the planet when social justice or at least a decent system of governance was achieved. We indulged in discussions about social movements, rallying cries, uprisings, fights and all such bloody things. And yet, to no avail. Never has there been a day when the sun rose to light anything but the usual scale of public administrators, opposition parties, underthe-table dealings and people who choose to go against the grain. At the same time, at the lower end of the scale there are always the destitute, the weak, homeless and ailing. There are countless pages of studies, speeches, suggestions, solutions, improvements to political systems and much blood shed during fights given by the supporters of Plato s ideals of isonomy and equality before the law. It is finally obvious that the only balance sheet we care and fight for is private and personal. I didn t wish to be unfair to the human kind and thus we went back to different social structures: classless, socialist, even primitive. Again, to no avail. Classless structures were much too unruly; in socialist structures the administrators live in palaces while youngsters suck gasoline at the sewer; in primitive structures little girls undergo genital mutilation and grownups slaughter each other during civil wars sacrificing minors in the name of some god. I strongly believe -to which Father Efraim s Church agrees in deed -that the mightiest god has always been profit and, primarily, easy profit to the expense of others. Amen. The hardest drug is Greed, the thoughtless acquisition of money in all possible forms in earlier days in the form of land and animals, now in Eurodollars, bonds, etc. How am I to explain the frenzy of multimillionaires who choose to get involved in leak scandals and misappropriations? How much more money does the doll of that handsome lad, Sarkozy, need after sticking her little plastic nose in charity matters and accounts? How many submarines and strings and rings do the government executives need in order to live the desired lifestyle? The list has no end and nothing to do with the latitude or longitude; it has to do with the stuff we are made of. All of the moral political figures that emerged in government boards were finally booted out, exorcised. How much more money does the doll of that handsome lad, Sarkozy, need after sticking her little plastic nose in charity matters and accounts? Greed is an everyday robbery aiming at all directions. Many times it is our daemon. Tycoons spend their lives in the company of bodyguards and cajolers, live miserably in hideouts or spend countless hours with lawyers and public prosecutors. Victims and victimisers living in the same body. Greed is the plague of our planet, rotting it away day after day, polluting the environment to make some extra cash, covering up rivers and seas with concrete, breaking down the forests. Greece Τεκμήρια σκαφών αναψυχής Ψηφίστηκε το νέο Φορολογικό Νομοσχέδιο που οριστικοποιεί τα νέα τεκμήρια διαβίωσης για τα Σκάφη αναψυχής. Μετά από μακρά διάρκεια αβεβαιότητας οι ιδιοκτήτες σκαφών αναψυχής γνωρίζουν πλέον το νέο τρόπο φορολόγησης που αφορά τα σκάφη. Για σκάφη πάνω από τα 22 μέτρα η αντικειμενική δαπάνη είναι 35,000 /μέτρο. Τα παραπάνω ποσά μειώνονται κατά ποσοστό 50% για ιστιοπλοϊκά. Τα επαγγελματικά σκάφη δεν λαμβάνονται υπόψη για την αντικειμενική δαπάνη. Για σκάφη με μόνιμο πλήρωμα ναυτολογημένο για ολόκληρο ή μέρος του έτους, στην παραπάνω δαπάνη προστίθεται και η αμοιβή του πληρώματος. Leisure Boat Presumptions The new Tax Bill finalising the new maintenance presumptions for leisure boats has passed. After a long period of uncertainty, the new boat taxing policy has finally been revealed to leisure boat owners. Thus, for boats larger than 22 metres the true costs are 35,000 / metre. The above amount is 50% lower for sailing boats. True costs are not taken into account for professional boats. For boats with a permanent crew engaged for the full year or part of the year, the crew s pay is also added to the aforementioned costs. The Blueline Sailing Team of AIOLOS Nautical Club of Kalamata expressed their satisfaction about their racing activity and performance in the most competitive category of open water racing, ORC International. After 1000 miles of crossings, they managed to participate and fight for the top of the ranking list in major Greek racing events, both offshore, i.e. Aegean Rally and GP, i.e. Panhellenic Championship held in Skopelos with no sponsors to support the attempt. The team s plans for 2012 include keeping up their good racing performance in Greece whereas they are also looking for a sponsor to help them continue participating in all major sailing events. Το μέτρο αυτών των δυνάμεων εξαρτάται από την ταχύτητα του ανέμου και όταν είναι μηδέν, τότε και αυτές έχουν μηδενικό μέτρο. Η δύναμη τριβής αναπτύσσεται μεταξύ κινούμενων στρωμάτων ρευστού καθώς και κατά την επαφή με μία επιφάνεια. Το μέτρο της εξαρτάται από ένα συντελεστή, το ιξώδες που μας δείχνει πόσο παχύρευστο είναι το ρευστό. Το μέλι π.χ. έχει μεγαλύτερο ιξώδες από το νερό. Το ιξώδες του αέρα είναι δύο τάξεις μεγέθους περίπου μικρότερο από του νερού. Η δύναμη τριβής που αναπτύσσεται όταν ο αέρας έρχεται σε επαφή με την επιφάνεια της Γης ξηρά ή θάλασσα είναι σημαντική. Έτσι ο αέρας κοντά στην επιφάνεια επιβραδύνεται. Αυτό έχει σαν αποτέλεσμα η ταχύτητα του ανέμου να αυξάνεται με το ύψος. Η αύξηση αυτή μεταβάλλει το μέτρο αλλά και τη διεύθυνση του φαινομένου ανέμου σε ένα ιστιοφόρο από μικρότερες γωνίες χαμηλά π.χ. στην ποδιά της μαΐστρας σε ανοικτότερες γωνίες (σιγόντο) στην κορυφή της. Την συμπεριφορά αυτή του ανέμου την εκμεταλλευόμαστε δημιουργώντας twist στη μαΐστρα. Friction force In our previous note we discussed the gravitational and the pressure gradient forces that create the wind. However the wind velocity and direction depend on three additional forces, the centrifugal, the Coriolis and the friction forces. Their magnitude depends on the wind velocity; if the wind velocity is zero their magnitude is zero also. Friction force occurs within fluid layers moving relatively to each other and also between a fluid moving over a surface. Friction magnitude depends on a coefficient termed viscosity. Viscosity shows how thick a fluid is: water is thinner compared to honey for instance. Viscosity of air is two orders of magnitude smaller compared to that of water. When air flows over the Earth s surface land or sea an important friction force develops resulting to a significant wind velocity decrease close to the surface. Therefore due to friction the wind velocity increases with altitude. This increase alters also the apparent wind direction the wind direction observed by someone moving with a sailboat shifting the apparent wind aft as we get higher off the water. Report Think Ice Μονοθέσιες σφήνες που εκτελούν χαμηλές πτήσεις Η σύλληψη για τη κατασκευή ενός μέσου ικανού να διαπλέει μεγάλες παγωμένες εκτάσεις σε χώρες πλησίον του αρκτικού κύκλου, ανάγεται στις αρχές του 18ου αιώνα, όταν η μεταφορά εμπορευμάτων ήταν καθοριστική για την επιβίωση των κατοίκων. Τότε, τα σκάφη είχαν μήκος περί τα 15 μέτρα, οι γραμμές ήταν απλές, η γάστρα ήταν συνήθως από μέταλλο και στο πλάι υπήρχαν μεγάλα παγοπέδιλα που επέτρεπαν κίνηση και ισορροπία. Η διαφορά τους έγκειται στο γεγονός ότι ενώ τα ιστιοπλοϊκά ανήκουν στη κατηγορία των πλωτών μέσων, ταξιδεύουν στο νερό, τα Ice Βoats τρέχουν πάνω στις παγωμένες λίμνες με ταχύτητες που ξεπερνούν τους 40 κόμβους (65 χλμ/ ώρα), επιδόσεις ασύλληπτες αρκεί να αναλογιστούμε ότι ένα racing ιστιοπλοϊκό με καλοκουρδισμένο πλήρωμα φτάνει τους 30 κόμβους (55 χλμ/ώρα). Their means of propulsion is air and they share a lot of the features of an ordinary sailboat: Dacron sails, halyards, sheets, helms. They set sail and follow the direction of the wind. The main difference, however, is that sailboats belong to the category of floating vessels traveling on water whereas ice boats travel on the frozen lakes at speeds that exceed 40 knots (65 km/hour). A record speed considering that a racing sailboat with a well-tuned crew can speed up to 30 knots (55 km/hour). We gave it a try in Monona Lake, Wisconsin, on a sunny day with light northern winds (10-12 miles/hour) and frequent gusts that shook the single-seater and raised the body temperature despite the -16 C. One-passenger wedges performing low flights The idea of building a vessel capable of crossing large surfaces of frozen water in countries near the Arctic Circle dates back to the beginning of the 18th century when the transport of merchandise was essential for the survival of the locals. Back then, vessels measured about 15 metres in length. They were of a simple design and featured a hull made of metal. There were large ice skates on both sides providing motion and balance. Yet, things have changed a lot since then; Ice Sailing has become a popular sport with ardent (if that is ever literally possible) fans in the Northern States of the USA, Canada and Europe. In Europe, it is mainly popular in northern countries such as the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Russia and of course the Baltic countries where Finland holds the lead thanks to its geophysical particularity. During the racing period, the nautical clubs or, to be more accurate, the Ice Yacht Clubs, organize local races or national championships. A major credit for ice sailors is the participation in the world championship which consists of a series of races that attract leading figures of this sport. 26

Σαρωνικός VS Monona Lake Τα DN είναι μονοθέσιες σφήνες που εκτελούν χαμηλές πτήσεις. Πρακτικά είναι μια γάστρα με κομψή σιλουέτα η οποία στο πλάι έχει δύο λεπίδες που πατάνε και στηρίζουν το σκάφος. Η γάστρα δεν αγγίζει τη παγωμένη επιφάνεια και η τριβή είναι αμελητέα. Η πλοήγηση είναι διασκεδαστική και χρειάζεται χρόνος προκειμένου να εγκλιματιστείς. Ο κυβερνήτης είναι ξαπλωμένος σχεδόν σφηνομένος μέσα στη γάστρα και με το ένα χέρι έχει τη λαγουδέρα και το άλλο τις σκότες για το χειρισμό των πανιών. Πολύ εντυπωσιακό είναι όταν αναπτύσσει ταχύτητα και στη κατάλληλη γωνία ως προς τον άνεμο σηκώνεται στο ένα πέδιλο Τα σκάφη Τα σκάφη που κατεβαίνουν στους αγώνες είναι διαφόρων κατηγοριών, τα Renegade, τα J 14, τα Ε-Skeeters και τα DN. Τα τελευταία είναι τα πιο δημοφιλή σε Ευρώπη και Αμερική και η ονομασία τους οφείλεται στην εφημερίδα Detroit News η οποία χορήγησε διαγωνισμό σχεδιασμού και πρόκειται για την εξέλιξη των «Blue Streak 60». Πρόκειται για μονοθέσια και one design, έχουν δηλαδή, πανομοιότυπα τεχνικά χαρακτηριστικά και στους αγώνες νικητής είναι αυτός που θα κόψει πρώτος το νήμα*. Η διαδικασία κατασκευής υπόκειται σε ένα box rule, σε ένα πακέτο κανόνων αναφορικά με τη χρήση και το συνδυασμό των υλικών ενώ οι διαστάσεις και η γεωμετρία είναι αυστηρά σταθερή. Συγκεκριμένα, η γάστρα, το κυρίως σκάφος δηλαδή, είναι κατασκευασμένη από ξύλο με ολικό μήκος στα 3.66 μέτρα. Εκατέρωθεν και κάθετα στο διαμήκη άξονα είναι τοποθετημένα τα side runners, παγολεπίδες που φροντίζουν για τη στήριξη με μέγιστο πλάτος τα 2.44 μέτρα. Το άλμπουρο μπορεί να είναι από αλουμίνιο ή από συνθετικό υλικό για εξοικονόμηση βάρους και μεγαλύτερη αντοχή για τα μεγαλύτερα φορτία. The Boats The vessels that participate in races belong to different classes: there are the Renegades, J 14s, Ε-Skeeters and DNs. The latter are the most popular in Europe and America and they were named after the Detroit News newspaper which sponsored the design competition that resulted in this particular model which is the evolution of the Blue Streak 60. They are single-seat, one design vessels, meaning that they have the same technical specifications and, thus, the winner of a race is the vessel that first crosses the finishing line*. The vessel is built in compliance with the box rule, a set of regulations on the use and combination of materials. The boat s dimensions and geometry are strictly fixed. More specifically, the hull, which is the main part of the vessel, is made of wood and measures a total of 3.66 metres in length. On both sides and perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis there are the side runners, that is the ice blades that provide stability and are a maximum of 2.44 metres long. The mast can be made of aluminium or synthetic materials to reduce weight and provide more resistance at greater loads. The sail area cannot exceed 6 m2, whereas the height of the mast is 4.88 metres. Unlike traditional boats, at the bow we find the steering mechanism which is a steering runner controlled by means of a regular helm at the cockpit. Due to the minimal friction, these vessels can reach speeds 2 to 4 times the true wind, namely 50 to 60 miles per hour. To get an idea of what this means, the world speed record at sea is 53.53 miles, therefore, during each training session, an apt ice sailor could actually break the barrier... The Saronic Gulf VS Monona Lake DNs are single-seat wedges that perform low flights. In fact, they consist of a slim hull with two blades on the sides that touch the ground and support the boat. The hull does not touch the ice and the friction is minimal. Steering is great fun and it takes time to get into the feeling of ice sailing. The skipper lays almost stuck in the hull and holds the helm with one hand and the sheets with the other to control the sails. Βασική προϋπόθεση για να ξεκινήσει κάποιος είναι ότι το πάχος της παγωμένης επιφάνειας να μην είναι μικρότερο από τα 15 εκατοστά. Πολλοί ναυτικοί όμιλοι τσεκάρουν με sonar για την ομοιογένεια του πάγου δεδομένου ότι πρέπει να είναι εξασφαλισμένη η περιοχή του στίβου. Ο ρουχισμός και ο εξοπλισμός επίσης είναι συγκεκριμένος, όταν οι θερμοκρασίες φτάνουν τους -20 C και ο ψυχρός αέρας έρχεται κόντρα διαπερνά τις κοινές νιτσεράδες και παγώνει το κορμί, γεγονός που αποτελεί κίνδυνο για τον κυβερνήτη. Οι αθλητές συνήθως φέρουν πολλαπλά στρώματα ρουχισμού, εσωθερμικά εσώρουχα πυκνής πλέξης, ολόσωμη φόρμα, αντιανεμικό και από πάνω μια δεύτερη ολόσωμη. Το κράνος είναι απαραίτητο και γενικά το πρόσωπο πρέπει να είναι καλυμμένο με μάσκα σκι. The race calendar and events vary in each country depending on the weather conditions and, most importantly, the condition of the ice. The main prerequisite to go ice sailing is the thickness of the frozen surface to be greater than 15 cm. Many Ice Yacht Clubs use sonar equipment to check the homogeny of the ice as the sailing area must always be secured. Clothing and equipment are also quite specific. When the temperature reaches -20C and the cold wind blows against your body, it can go through the regular sailing jackets and freeze the body putting the skipper in danger. Athletes usually wear multiple layers of clothes, dense weave underwear that maintain the body temperature, full body suits, wind-repellent shirts and a second body suit on top of all that. We have to admit that the British company attracted a lot of attention this year. In fact, Manhattan 64 won the title of Best Boat in the 55-footer class during the Motor Boat of the Year Awards organised by the reputable Motor Boat Monthly and Motor Boats & Yachting magazines. Με το μεγαλύτερο περίπτερο κατέβηκε εφέτος η Sunseeker, έχοντας να επιδείξει συνολικά 14 σκάφη. Σε περίοπτη θέση ήταν το Yachts 28. To σκάφος έχει ολικό μήκος στα 28.15 μέτρα και μέγιστο πλάτος στα 6.50 μέτρα. Το εκτόπισμα είναι στους 76 τόνους και το βύθισμα στα 2.13 μέτρα. Ο σχεδιασμός ανήκει στο τεχνικό γραφείο της Sunseeker δίνοντας ένα σκάφος με καθαρές και λιτές γραμμές. Στα εσωτερικά συναντάμε άνετους και φιλόξενους κοινωνικούς χώρους, σαλόνι και τραπεζαρία ενώ στο lower deck είναι οι καμπίνες των φιλοξενούμενων και του πληρώματος (με διαφορετική είσοδο).
