Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Reverend Father Dean J. Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH 44113 216-861-0116 October 8, 2017 3rd Sunday of Luke St. Pelagia the Penitent was converted to Christianity by St. Nonnus, Bishop of Edessa. Before her acceptance of Christianity through Baptism, Pelagia was head of a dance troupe in Antioch, living a life of frivolity and prostitution. One day while Pelagia was elegantly dressed, she made her way past a church where St. N o n n u s w a s p r e a c h - ing. Believersturned their faces away from her, but the Bishop glanced after Pelagia. Struck by her beauty, St. Nonnus prayed in his cell at length to the Lord for the sinner. He told his fellow bishops that the prostitute put them all to shame, explaining that she took great care to adorn her body in order to appear beautiful in the eyes of men. We... take no thought for the adornment of our wretched souls, he said. On the following day, while St. Nonnus was teaching in the church about the dread Last Judgment and its consequences, Pelagia appeared again. His teaching made a tremendous impression upon her. With the fear of God and weeping tears of repentance, she asked St. Nonnus to baptize her. Seeing her sincere and full repentance, Bishop Nonnus did so. After her conversion, the devil began to appear to Pelagia, urging her to return to her former life. But she prayed, made the Sign of the Cross, and the devil vanished. Three days after her baptism, Pelagia gathered up her valuables and took them to Bishop Nonnus. The bishop ordered that they be distributed among the poor saying, Let this be wisely dispersed, so that these riches gained by sin m a y b e c o m e a w e a l t h of righteousness. After this, St. Pelagia journeyed to Jerusalem to the Mount of Olives. She lived there in a cell, disguised as the monk Pelagius, living in ascetic s e c l u s i o n, a n d a t t a i n i n g great spiritual gifts. When she died, she was buried in her cell. Epistle Prokeimenon. Mode 4. Psalm 18.4,1 Their voice has gone out into all the earth. Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God. The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 9:6-11 Brethren, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. TODAY Today s coffee social is provided by the families of the Little Angel s - Join us for coffee and fellowship in the lower level social hall. The Cleveland Museum of Art International Cleveland Community Day 11:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. International Cleveland Community Day fstival The Annunciation Dance Group will be performing at 2:00 p.m. Admission is Free Gospel 3rd Sunday of Luke The Gospel According to Luke 7:11-16 At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" With the stone sealed by Judeans, and the soldiers guarding your undefiled body, you rose, O Savior, the third day, to all the world granting life. For this reason, the heavenly powers cried to you, the giver of life: glory to your resurrection, O Christ, glory to your kingdom, glory to you dispensation, O only true friend of man. The image of God, was faithfully preserved in you, O Mother. For you took up the Cross and followed Christ. By Your actions you taught us to look beyond the flesh for it passes, rather to be concerned about the soul which is immortal. Wherefore, O Holy Pelagia your soul rejoices with the angels. To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mystery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announceth the good tidings of grace. Wherefore let us also with him cry to the Mother of God: Hail! Thou that art full of grace; the Lord is with thee. O protection of the unashamable, mediation to the Creator immovable, despise not, the pleading voices of those in sin, but hasten O good one, to the help of all of us, who in faith cry out to you: speed up your intercession, and press on your supplication, O Theotokos who always protect, all those who honor you 4
Orthodox Christian Stewardship is a way of life, which acknowledges accountability, reverence, and responsibility before God. A primary goal of Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a Steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loyalty and trust and act on those beliefs. As Stewards, we affirm that every aspect of our lives comes as a gift from Him. Stewardship calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts with which they have been blessed. You can pay your stewardship contributions with a credit card payment. office@annunciationcleveland.net Dear Friends of the Community, In an effort to defray the cost of publishing our Weekly Bulletin, & Vision, the Parish Council would like to invite anyone who wishes to support the Community to offer a small donation of $250.00 for a business card sized ad which will be placed on the back inside pages of each publication for the calendar year, 2017. We generally publish a Weekly Bulletin as well as a Quarterly Newsletter, and with this program, hope to cut our publication cost in half by gathering 36 ads which will take up the last four pages of the Vision & Bulletin. If you are interested in this program, please send a business card that we will reproduce. Please also enclose a check made out to The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church for $250.00.
