INTRODUCTION TO ΠΑΡΑΚΑΛÉΩ IN HEBREWS 3:13 Παρακαλέω In Hebrews 3:13 is written to carefully and completely verify its conclusion for New Testament scholars, who have an understanding of biblical Greek and Hebrew. Those who are not New Testament scholars may tire of the continual validation of conclusions. It may be worthwhile for the readers who are not New Testament scholars to start by reading the following: 1. Preliminaries (table of contents, dedication, etc page i-vii) 2. First chapter (pages 1-3) 3. Last section of chapter four ( Meaning of Παρακαλέω pages 43-44) 4. Fifth chapter (pages 45-48). This will help the reader understand the main point of the thesis without having to read all the validations of that main point. There may be some things that seem vague from reading these selections but rest assured the details can be found in the section of the thesis that deals with that detail. May the reader be encouraged and exhorted to have a soft heart, to hold fast to the Savior (who is truly superior), to be on guard for the deceitfulness of sin and then to encourage and exhort others to do likewise.

A GUIDE TO ΠΑΡΑΚΑΛÉΩ IN HEBREWS 3:13 This guide is intended to help the layperson not familiar with biblical Greek and Hebrew read the thesis Παρακαλέω in Hebrews 3:13 (referred to as the thesis throughout this guide). Greek and Hebrew words are glossed 1 by page and line number. Each word will only be glossed for their first use within a chapter (i.e. subsequence uses with in a chapter will not be glossed). The exception to this is παρακαλέω, which is only glossed below. The glosses are based on the author s understanding and verification from a Concise Greek-English Dictionary of the New Testament by Barclay Moon Newman 2 and Langenscheidt's Pocket Hebrew Dictionary to the Old Testament by Karl Feyerabend. 3 Παρακαλέω is used throughout the thesis. A gloss for παρακαλέω is to encourage, exhort, urge or comfort. This word will be used throughout the thesis. The reader should learn to recognize this word both with the first letter capitalized (Παρακαλέω) and with the first letter in small case (παρακαλέω). The thesis will carefully define this word in Chapter 3. Hence it is very important to view the above definition as only a simple gloss for the word. 1 A gloss is a short definition giving a simplistic understanding of the word. 2 Barclay Moon Newman, Concise Greek-English Dictionary of the New Testament. (Stuttgart, Germany: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft; United Bible Societies, 1993). Langenscheidt, 1985). 3 Karl Feyerabend, Langenscheidt's Pocket Hebrew Dictionary to the Old Testament (Berlin:

The phonetic pronunciation of παρακαλέω is pa-ra-ka-le-ō. 4 Due to the Anglophone influence on Greek pronunciation, it might be pronounced as par-ә-ka-le-ō. 5 It is suggested that the reader reference a Bible for the passage that is being discussed. The thesis does not always quote the passage being discussed and when it does, it does so in Greek or Hebrew. Greek quotations of the Apocrypha in Chapter 3 of the thesis are translated in the guide to the Chapter 3. Where translations are provided in this guide, the translation is that of the author. 4 p as in pepper or lip. a as in mat or gag. r as in rod or red. k as in kin or cook. l as in lily or law. e as in met or bed. ō as is bone or vote. 5 ә as in banana or collide.

GUIDE TO CHAPTER 3 WORD STUDY OF ΠΑΡΑΚΑΛÉΩ There are numerous Greek quotations in Chapter 3, translations for many of these quotations can be found in the footnotes. Page 15 line 14.j1n@ - to have pity, be sorry, have compassion, or be comforted. This is a difficult word to precisely define. More will be said about this word on page 16 of the thesis. Page 16 line 3 lh1n@ - to provide, conduct or lead Page 17 lines 7 and 8, quotation from 2 Maccabees 12:3 παρακαλέσαντες τοὺς σὺν αὐτοῖς οἰκοῦντας Ιουδαίους ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὰ παρακατασταθέντα ὑπ αὐτῶν σκάφη σὺν γυναιξὶν καὶ τέκνοις. They invited the Jews, with wives and children, who lived with them to come beside them in the boats. Page 17 lines 11 and 12, quotation from 1 Maccabees 12:50 παρεκάλεσαν ἑαυτοὺς καὶ ἐπορεύοντο συνεστραμμένοι ἕτοιμοι εἰς πόλεμον. They encouraged each other and they departed together, ready for a battle. Page 17 line 14, quotation from Sirach 48:24 παρεκάλεσεν τοὺς πενθοῦντας ἐν Σιων. He comforted those who mourned in Zion. Page 17 lines 18 and 19, quotation from 1 Maccabees 9:35 παρεκάλεσεν τοὺς Ναβαταίους φίλους αὐτοῦ τοῦ παραθέσθαι αὐτοῖς τὴν ἀποσκευὴν. He entreated the Nabathites, friends of his, to leave their furnishings. Their furnishings refer to the furnishings of the person doing the entreating and those he represented, not the furnishings of the Nabathites.
