Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, illtreated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfection of our faith. The Lord said to his disciples, "Every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny him before my Father who is in heaven. And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first." Sunday of All Saints The Sunday following Pentecost is dedicated to All Saints, both those who are known to us, and those who are known only to God. There have been saints at all times, and they have come from every corner of the earth. They were Apostles, Martyrs, Prophets, Hierarchs, Monastics, and Righteous, yet all were perfected by the same Holy Spirit. The Descent of the Holy Spirit makes it possible for us to rise above our fallen state and to attain sainthood, thereby fulfilling God s directive to be holy, for I am holy (Lev. 11:44, 1 Peter 1:16, etc.). Therefore, it is fitting to commemorate All Saints on the first Sunday after Pentecost. This feast may have originated at an early date, perhaps as a celebration of all martyrs, then it was broadened to include all men and women who had borne witness to Christ by their virtuous lives, even if they did not shed their blood for Him. St Peter of Damascus, in his Fourth Stage of Contemplation, mentions five categories of saints: Apostles, Martyrs, Prophets, Hierarchs, and Monastic Saints (PHILOKALIA [in English] Vol. 3, p.131). He is actually quoting from the OCTOECHOS, Tone 2 for Saturday Matins, kathisma after the first stichology. St Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain ( July 14) adds the Righteous to St Peter s five categories. The list of St. Nicodemus is found in his book The Fourteen Epistles of St. Paul (Venice, 1819, p. 384) in his discussion of I Corinthians 12:28. The hymnology for the feast of All Saints also lists six categories: Rejoice, assembly of the Continued on next page
Apostles, Prophets of the Lord, loyal choirs of the Martyrs, divine Hierarchs, Monastic Fathers, and the Righteous. Some of the saints are described as Confessors, a category which does not appear in the above lists. Since they are similar in spirit to the martyrs, they are regarded as belonging to the category of Martyrs. They were not put to death as the Martyrs were, but they boldly confessed Christ and came close to being executed for their faith. St Maximus the Confessor (Jan. 21) is such a saint. The order of these six types of saints seems to be based on their importance to the Church. The Apostles are listed first, because they were the first to spread the Gospel throughout the world. The Martyrs come next because of their example of courage in professing their faith before the enemies and persecutors of the Church, which encouraged other Christians to remain faithful to Christ even unto death. Although they come first chronologically, the Prophets are listed after the Apostles and Martyrs. This is because the Old Testament Prophets saw only the shadows of things to come, whereas the Apostles and Martyrs experienced them firsthand. The New Testament also takes precedence over the Old Testament. The holy Hierarchs comprise the fourth category. They are the leaders of their flocks, teaching them by their word and their example. The Monastic Saints are those who withdrew from this world to live in monasteries, or in seclusion. They did not do this out of hatred for the world, but in order to devote themselves to unceasing prayer, and to do battle against the power of the demons. Although some people erroneously believe that monks and nuns are useless and unproductive, St John Climacus had a high regard for them: Angels are a light for monks, and the monastic life is a light for all men (Ladder, Step 26:31). The last category, the Righteous, are those who attained holiness of life while living in the world. Examples include Abraham and his wife Sarah, Job, Sts Joachim and Anna, St Joseph the Betrothed, St Juliana of Lazarevo, and others. The feast of All Saints achieved great prominence in the ninth century, in the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Leo VI the Wise (886-911). His wife, the Holy Empress Theophano (December 16) lived in the world, but was not attached to worldly things. She was a great benefactor to the poor, and was generous to the monasteries. She was a true mother to her subjects, caring for widows and orphans, and consoling the sorrowful. Even before the death of St Theophano in 893 or 894, her husband started to build a church, intending to dedicate it to Theophano, but she forbade him to do so. It was this emperor who decreed that the Sunday after Pentecost be dedicated to All Saints. Believing that his wife was one of the righteous, he knew that she would also be honored whenever the Feast of All Saints was celebrated.
Οἱ Ἅγιοι Πάντες Πραγματικὰ εἶναι θαυμαστὸς ὁ Θεὸς μέσα στοὺς ἁγίους του. Γιατί ὅταν κανεὶς ἀναλογισθεῖ τοὺς ὑπερφυσικοὺς ἀγῶνες τῶν μαρτύρων, πὼς μὲ ἀσθενὴ σάρκα καταντρόπιασαν τὸν ἰσχυρὸ στὴ κακία, πὼς ἔμειναν ἀναίσθητοι στὶς ὀδύνες καὶ στὰ τραύματα, καθὼς ἀγωνίζονταν μὲ σώματα πρὸς φωτιά, πρὸς τὸ ξίφος, πρὸς ποικί α καὶ θανατηφόρα εἴδη βασάνων καὶ ἀντιπαρατάσσονταν μὲ καρτερία, ἐνῶ τοὺς ἔκοβαν τὶς σάρκες, τοὺς διά υαν τοὺς ἁρμοὺς καὶ τοὺς συνέτριβαν τὰ ὀστά, ὅμως διαφύ αξαν τὴν ὁμολογία τῆς πίστεως στὸ Χριστὸ σώα καὶ ἀδιάσπαστη, ἀκεραία καὶ ἀκλόνητη, ποὺ γι αὐτὸ τοὺς χαρίσθηκε καὶ ἡ ἀναντίρρητη σοφία τοῦ Πνεύματος καὶ ἡ δύναμη τῶν θαυμάτων. Ὅταν κανεὶς ἀναλογισθεῖ ἐπίσης τὴν ὑπομονὴ τῶν ὁσίων, πὼς ὑπέφεραν μὲ τὴ θέ ησή τους σὰν ἀσώματοι τὶς πολυήμερες ἀσιτίες, τὶς ἀγρυπνίες, τὶς ἄ ες ποικί ες κακώσεις τοῦ σώματος, καὶ ἀντιτάχθηκαν ἕως τὸ τέ ος πρὸς τὰ πονηρὰ πάθη, πρὸς τὰ τόσα εἴδη ἁμαρτίας, πρὸς τὸν ἐσωτερικό μας ἀόρατο πό εμο, πρὸς τὶς ἀρχὲς καὶ ἐξουσίες, ἐνῶ ἔ ειωναν καὶ ἀχρηστεύονταν ἐξωτερικά, ἀ ὰ ἀνανεώνονταν καὶ ἐθεώνονταν ἐσωτερικὰ ἀπὸ ἐκεῖνον ποὺ τοὺς ἔδωσε τὰ χαρίσματα τῶν θεραπειῶν καὶ δυνάμεων. Ὅταν λάβει αὐτὰ κανεὶς ὑπ ὄψιν του καὶ ἐπὶ πλέον ἐννοήσει ὅτι ὑπερβαίνουν τὴ φύση μας, θαυμάζει καὶ δοξάζει τὸ Θεὸ ποὺ ἔδωσε σ αὐτοὺς τὴν τόση ἄφθονη χάρη καὶ δύναμη. Γιατί ἂν καὶ εἶχαν ἀγαθὴ καὶ καλὴ προαίρεση, χωρὶς τὴ δύναμη τοῦ Θεοῦ δὲν θὰ κατόρθωναν νὰ ὑπερβοῦν τὴ φύση καὶ ἔχοντας σῶμα, νὰ κατανικήσουν τὸν ἀσώματο ἐχθρό. Γι αὐτὸ καὶ ὁ ψαλμωδὸς προφήτης, ἀφοῦ εἶπε: «Θαυμαστὸς εἶναι ὁ Θεὸς μέσα στοὺς ἁγίους αὐτοῦ», πρόσθεσε: «αὐτὸς θὰ δώσει δύναμη καὶ κραταίωση στὸ λαό του». (Ψαλμ. ξζ, 36). Ἀπολαύουν δὲ τὴ χάρη τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὄχι ὅ οι γενικά, ἀ ὰ ὅσοι ἔχουν ἀγαθὴ προαίρεση καὶ ἐπιδεικνύουν μὲ ἔργα τὴν πρὸς τὸ Θεὸ ἀγάπη καὶ πίστη. Αὐτὸ φανερώνεται στὸ εὐαγγέ ιο ποὺ λέγει: «ὅποιος ὁμολογήσει σ ἐμένα ἐμπρὸς στοὺς ἀνθρώπους, θὰ ὁμολογήσω καὶ ἐγὼ σ αὐτὸν ἐμπρὸς στὸ Πατέρα μου στοὺς οὐρανούς» (Ματθ. ι, 32). Δὲν εἶπε «ὅποιος μὲ ὁμολογήσει ἐμπρὸς στοὺς ἀνθρώπους», ἀ ὰ «ὅποιος ὁμολογήσει μέσα σ ἐμένα» μὲ τὴν ἔννοια ὅτι μπορεῖ νὰ προβά ει μὲ παρρησία τὴν εὐσέβεια, δι ἐκείνου καὶ διὰ τῆς βοηθείας ἐκείνου. Ἔτσι πά ι «θὰ ὁμολογήσω καὶ ἐγώ» καὶ δὲν εἶπε «αὐτόν» ἀ ὰ «μέσα σ αὐτόν», δηλαδὴ διὰ τῆς ἀγαθῆς ἀντιστάσεως καὶ ὑπομονῆς. Αὐτὸ δηλώνει τὴν ἀδιάσπαστη συνάφεια τοῦ Θεοῦ πρὸς τοὺς ὁμολογοῦντας, ἂν καὶ εἶναι δοῦ οι Θεοῦ. Ἀντίθετα «ὅποιος μὲ ἀρνηθεῖ ἐμπρὸς στοὺς ἀνθρώπους, θὰ τὸν ἀρνηθῶ καὶ ἐγὼ ἐμπρὸς στὸ Πατέρα μου στοὺς οὐρανούς». Δὲν εἶπε ἐδῶ «ὅποιος ἀρνηθεῖ μέσα σὲ μένα», γιατί; Διότι ὁ ἀρνούμενος ἀρνεῖται τὸ Θεὸ ἂν στερηθεῖ τὴ Θεϊκὴ βοήθεια. Γιατί δὲ ἐγκαταλείφθηκε καὶ ἔμεινε ἔρημος τοῦ Θεοῦ; Ἐπειδὴ αὐτὸς πρῶτα πρό αβε καὶ τὸν ἐγκατέ ειψε, ἀφοῦ ἀγάπησε τὰ πρόσκαιρα καὶ γήινα πράγματα περισσότερο, παρὰ τὰ ἐπαγγελμένα ἀπὸ τὸ Θεὸ οὐράνια καὶ αἰώνια ἀγαθά. Ἔτσι οἱ θεῖες ἀντιδόσεις ἔχουν μαζί τους τὴ θεία δικαιοσύνη καὶ ἐπιφέρουν ἀπὸ τὴ ὁμοίωση τὰ ἀνά ογα ἀποτελέσματα. Καὶ ἐνῶ οἱ ὁμολογήσαντες τὸ Θεὸ στὸ πρόσκαιρο αὐτὸ βίο τὸ ἔκαναν παρουσία λίγων ἀνθρώπων, ὁ Χριστὸς Θεὸς καὶ Κύριος τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ γῆς θὰ τοὺς ὑποστηρίξει ἐνώπιον τοῦ Πατρός, τῶν ἀγγέ ων, ὅ ων τῶν οὐρανίων δυνάμεων καὶ μὲ παρουσία ὅ ων τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἀπὸ Ἀδὰμ μέχρι τῆς συντέ ειας. Καὶ θὰ στεφανώσει καὶ θὰ δοξάσει ὅ ους ἐκείνους ποὺ ἐπέδειξαν πίστη μέχρι τέ ους σὲ αὐτόν. Ἀ ὰ καὶ τώρα δοξάζονται κάποιοι ἅγιοι μὲ τὰ ἱερὰ λείψανά τους ποὺ εὐωδιάζουν, ποὺ χαρίζουν ἰάσεις καὶ διάφορα ἐνεργήματα δυνάμεων, προσκυνώντας τους καὶ γονατίζοντας στὶς εἰκόνες τους βασιλεῖς, ἄρχοντες καὶ ὁ λαὸς τοῦ Κυρίου. Ἄ ωστε τὸ εἶπε ὁ ἴδιος ὁ Κύριος πρὸς τοὺς πιστοὺς ὅτι: «ὅποιος ἀφήσει οἰκία, συγγενεῖς ἢ ἀγροὺς γιὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου, θὰ τὰ λάβει ἑκατονταπλάσια καὶ θὰ κληρονομήσει αἰώνια ζωή». Καὶ τὴν ἴδια του ζωὴ εἶναι δίκαιο καὶ ἀναγκαῖο νὰ τὴν ἀφήσει ὁ πιστός, ἂν τὸν καλέσει ὁ καιρὸς σὲ περιόδους διωγμῶν, γιὰ νὰ πετύχει τὴν αἰώνια ζωή, ἀφοῦ καὶ ὁ ἴδιος ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔδωσε τὴ ζωή του γιὰ χάρη μας. Ἀ ὰ καὶ σὲ εἰρηνικοὺς καιροὺς ὁ πιστὸς λαμβάνει τὸ σταυρό του, σταυρώνοντας τὰ πάθη καὶ τὶς ἐπιθυμίες τῆς σάρκας. Διότι λέγει: «ὅποιος βρῆκε τὴν ψυχή του θὰ τὴν χάσει, καὶ ὅποιος ἔχασε τὴν ψυχή του γιὰ χάρη μου, θὰ τὴ βρεῖ». (Ματθ. ι, 39). Ὁ ἄνθρωπος εἶναι διπλός, ὁ ἐκτός δηλαδὴ τοῦ σώματος καὶ ὁ μέσα μας, δηλαδὴ ἡ ψυχή. Ὅταν κάποιος παραδώσει τὸν ἑαυτό του σὲ θάνατο κατὰ τὸν ἐκτὸς ἄνθρωπο, χάνει τὴ ψυχή του ποὺ χωρίζεται ἀπὸ τὸ σῶμα, ἀ ὰ τὴ βρίσκει στὸ Χριστὸ κατὰ τὴν ἀνάσταση καὶ γίνεται οὐράνιος καὶ αἰώνιος. Ἡ ἐκκλησία τοῦ Χριστοῦ, τιμᾶ λοιπὸν καὶ μετὰ θάνατο αὐτοὺς ποὺ ἔζησαν ἀ ηθινὰ κατὰ Θεό, κάθε μέρα τοῦ ἔτους τελεῖ τὴ μνήμη τῶν ἁγίων ποὺ μετέστησαν καὶ ἀπεδήμησαν ἀπὸ τὴ πρόσκαιρη αὐτὴ ζωή. Συγχρόνως δὲ προβά ει τὸ βίο καθενὸς χάρη τῆς ὠφελείας μας καὶ ὑποδεικνύει τὸ τέ ος τους, εἴτε εἰρηνικὸ εἴτε μαρτυρικό. Τώρα δὲ μετὰ τὴ Πεντηκοστή, ἡ Ἐκκλησία ἀφοῦ συγκέντρωσε ὅ ους τους ἁγίους γνωστοὺς καὶ ἀγνώστους μαζί, ἀναπέμπει κοινὸ σὲ ὅ ους αὐτοὺς ὕμνο, ὄχι μόνο διότι ὅ οι εἶναι ἑνωμένοι μεταξύ τους καὶ μὲ τὸν Πατέρα, ὅπως τὸ ζήτησε ὁ Κύριος: «νὰ εἶναι ὅ οι ἕνα, ὅπως ἐγώ, Πάτερ, μὲ σένα καὶ σὺ μὲ μένα, νὰ εἶναι καὶ αὐτοὶ μὲ ἐμᾶς ἕνα στὴν ἀ ήθεια», (Ἰω. ιζ, 20), ἀ ὰ καὶ γιατί φροντίζει νὰ φανερώνει καὶ νὰ ἀνυμνεῖ ὅ α τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ ὡς ἀποτέ εσμα τῆς ἀποστολῆς, φωτισμοῦ καὶ ἐνεργείας τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος. Ἃς τιμήσουμε λοιπὸν ὅ ους τοὺς ἁγίους του Θεοῦ. Πῶς; Ἂν κατὰ μίμησή τους καθαρίσουμε τοὺς ἑαυτούς μας ἀπὸ κάθε μολυσμὸ σαρκὸς καὶ πνεύματος καὶ ἔτσι ἀπομακρυνόμενοι ἀπὸ τὰ κακὰ διὰ τῆς μετανοίας καὶ ἐξομολογήσεως, θὰ φερόμεθα πρὸς τὴν ἁγιοσύνη παρουσιάζοντας τὰ σώματα καὶ τὶς ψυχές μας εὐάρεστες στὸ Θεό, μὲ τὶς πρεσβεῖες τῶν ἁγίων πάντων ὥστε νὰ γίνουμε καὶ ἐμεῖς μέτοχοι τῆς ἀπέραντης ἐκείνης πανηγύρεως καὶ εὐφροσύνης μὲ τὴ χάρη καὶ φιλανθρωπία τοῦ Κυρίου μας Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ στὸν ὁποῖο πρέπει κάθε δόξα μαζὶ μὲ τὸν ἄναρχο Πατέρα του καὶ τὸ πανάγιο καὶ ἀγαθὸ καὶ ζωοποιὸ Πνεῦμα, τώρα καὶ πάντοτε καὶ στοὺς αἰῶνες τῶν αἰώνων.
