Bouzouki in Baroque Style LAFTSIS / SAVARIA BAROQUE ORCHESTRA / NÉMETH The cooperation of the bouzouki virtuoso Lakis Laftsis and the Savaria Baroque Chamber Orchestra playing on period instruments conducted by Pál Németh is an interesting, original attempt at alloying the several-thousandyear-old Greek culture, the musical style of the Baroque and the emotional atmosphere of our time. The role of music is the greatest with the antique Greek from all of the other ancient worlds, since it becomes part of the general knowledge there for the first time. Here music is the constituting the element of religious ceremonies, the performances of the Greek dramas and the Olympic Games. The Greek musical theory is of vital importance from the point of view of subsequent ages and besides it deals with the role and influence of music in the society as well. According to the Greek, music is of divine origin and it also produces great moral effect on the human character and behaviour. Pál Németh flutist-conductor, artistic director has arranged the programme of the CD. In the first part of the programme works by Italian grand master, Antonio Vivaldi can be heard. He composed his Concerto in C major for mandolin and orchestra, but this time the role of the soloist is taken over by the Greek lute, in its better-known modern name, the bouzouki.
Vivaldi s most popular work is the set of violin concertos titled The Four Seasons. The arrangement of The Summer promises to be a very interesting experiment to show a new face of both the Concerto and the especially virtuoso bouzouki. One of the greatest masters of the Grande Baroque, the first half of the 18th century is Georg Friedrich Handel. As a virtuoso organist himself, Handel composed a lot of concertos for organ and orchestra; these works used to be performed regularly in the intervals of his opera performances. The Concerto in B flat major is able to achieve success also arranged for the bouzouki. Lakis Laftsis own composition titled Castle is homage to the baroque music. Its aim for the young generation playing on the bouzouki to bring the world of classical music nearer to the audience and, at the same time, it can be a technical guide, which can help to enlarge the potential of the folk instrument, as well as the performers can evolve their virtuosity. The first memory of the European music survived in writing is the Seikilos epitaph dates back to about the 2nd century B. C. The epitaph on the grave of the merchant s departed wife is written in iambic lines accompanied by musical indications. It was discovered in Tralleis in Asia Minor (nowadays Aidin, Turkey) in 1883.
Although being an epitaph, it is a message from a person living for the moment, which glorifies life and reminds us of its beauties and of the progress of time. Its text is the following: Οσον ζής φαίνου, Μηδέν όλως σύ λυπού Προς ολίγον εστί το ζήν Το τέλος ο χρόνος απαιτεί While you live, shine Don t feel grief For life is short Time demands the end. Pál Németh wrote Variations (Paralages) on this theme. These variations, from the plain song through the early polyphony, following the scheme of the Baroque sets of variations become quicker and quicker, more and more virtuoso, so that in the second part, with the pulsation of the typical Greek, odd-numbered bars, they could reach the dynamic final dance well-known from folk-music of today (pyrihios-serra). Bouzouki, early musical memory, Baroque style and folk music of today are mixed in the series.

Bouzouki in Baroque Style LAFTSIS / SAVARIA BAROQUE ORCHESTRA / NÉMETH Το πρόγραμμα του δίσκου το συνέταξε ο φλαουτίστας και διευθυντής ορχήστρας, καλλιτεχνικός διευθυντής Pál Németh.
