Kingsgrove High School In September/October of 2000 I was fortunate to be part of a school principals visit to Greece. The Greek government generously sponsored the tour for principals of schools throughout Australia that had a significant number of Greek-background students or were teaching Modern Greek. (Kingsgrove High has almost 300 Greek-background students, many of whom study Modern Greek for the School Certificate and HSC). The visit to Greece was planned to provide us with a better understanding of both the heritage of Greece and modern Greek society, culture and education. We went to a number of historical sites, the Parliament, museums and schools (as well as great restaurants) in Athens, and visited an international school on the island of Spetses. Our tour of Greece included Nafplion (the first capital of modern independent Greece), Epidavros, Mycenae, Olympia (in pouring rain and lightning from the Gods), Delphi, through central Greece to Meteora and on to Macedonia and the tomb of Philip of Macedon, Thessaloniki and back to Athens. We had extraordinarily helpful and informative guides and experienced a wonderful variety of excellent restaurant food. The highlight of my visit to Greece was the establishment of a twin-school relationship with the second High School of Glyfada (a senior high school) in Athens. I visited the school with several of my colleagues and was made very welcome by the principal, Mr. Curriculum Support Directorate Languages Unit Term 1/2001 42
Andonis Saris and his teachers, as well as the parents and students. After this we were guests of the Mayor of Glyfada, Mr. Landrakis, at an official ceremony at the Glyfada Town Hall. Both of our schools expect great benefits for our students from the twin-school relationship. We have an email link and our students are already writing letters to the Glyfada students. Hamilton South Public School If the Secretariat for Greeks Abroad Program for Australian Principals to visit Greece is any guide as to how the 2004 Olympics will work out in the end - all will be well. It will be Greek. It will be different, but it will inspire the world, just as the forty eight principals were inspired by our experience in Greece. The purpose of the trip was: to inspire and enthuse (a Greek word meaning to inculcate the spirit of God in another - so we learnt) school leaders about the importance of Greek civilization to our own; and to ensure that Greek Australian children (and Australian children in general) maintain links and understanding of Greek language and culture. Of course the intercultural dialogue and understanding was also crucial. All principals on the trip either have the Greek language taught in their schools, or were planning for this. Some met up in Greece with existing 'sister' schools, and others like my own, Hamilton South Public School in Newcastle, established new links. We were also fortunate to have with us a group of principals from Greek Orthodox schools in Australia. Their translations were valuable in deepening our understanding of all that we did and saw. At the end of September, with the Sydney Olympics over the half way mark we set off for Athens accompanied by returning Greek and Bulgarian athletes (complete with medals). What was in store for us was a tour that would take us to many of the important historical and cultural museums and sites in Greece, and would also allow us to exchange ideas, educational philosophy and understandings with Greek educators, and to visit a number of schools. We saw so much: the Parthenon sitting high above Athens on the Acropolis; the Plaka where we fell in love with the shops, the restaurants and the historic preservation of this beautiful suburb; and museums full of treasures which were explained to us by our impressive guide, Eleni. As guests of the Greek Parliament, we heard about the history of democracy and were welcomed with style. Beneath Constitution Square we saw the wonderful new underground railway which is a museum itself showing what the excavations for the railway revealed of the 'City beneath the City'. In the country, we travelled through the Peloponnese. We saw the Corinth Canal, Argolis where we saw the rostrum where St Paul preached to the Corinthians, to Epidavros with its ancient theatre with the best acoustics in the world; and to Nafplion the original capital of Greece - such a beautiful place. At Mycenae, and Agamemnon's tomb, we heard about the removal of many treasures by unscrupulous archeologists. We heard of wars, of occupation and of turmoil. There has been much tragedy in Greece, and the Greeks are sad, triumphant, and philosophical about it all. We heard the words of Seferis the modern Greek poet who said, "Wherever I go Greece wounds me". We travelled on to Olympia. Zeus was cross with us there, and the rain came down in buckets! Further north, we visited monasteries magnificently perched on top of rocky mountains at Meterora, Delphi in mystical fog and we felt for ourselves the deep spirituality of the people of Greece. We went to Vergina where we saw the tomb of Phillip of Macedon, another great wonder of the world. Thessaloniki is a bustling and Curriculum Support Directorate Languages Unit Term 1/2001 44
prosperous northern city and gateway to the Balkans. There we saw Aristotle Square and University, a Roman bath house being restored and a Multicultural school, which is one of the schools coming to terms with the change in Greece from a monoculture to a more multicultural European nation. Everywhere we went we ate at tavernas where we feasted on traditional Greek food and wine. We all managed Greek dancing, but were glad not many photos were taken! We ate at Kastella by the sea, at a restaurant "Atheon Geuseis" which specialises in food from ancient Greece. Goat, fetta cheese and olives, rocket, onions, hummous and bread, apple, pears, melon and mead to drink were the fare. The atmosphere was wonderful. Edmund and Athena, our tour organizers, were attentive to detail and responsive to everyone's needs and wants. Stories of Greek history, myths and legends, the derivation of words, and details of art, culture and philosophy were explained by Eleni our guide wherever we went. For example, in English we have an expression "It's raining cats and dogs". In Greece, it rains "legs of chairs"! We learnt that "to work to rule" had it's origin as an inventory to describe the 1:7 ratio of a statue i.e the body of the statue is 7 times the length of the head in a perfectly proportioned statue. We were in Athens when the closing ceremony of the Sydney Games occurred. We discovered that journalists covering such an event are the same the world over. When the Bananas in Pyjamas came into the arena, the Greek commentators explained: "These are the pyjamas that Australian people wear. They like them so much, that dolls are dressed in them for their children." At times like this we were grateful to the Principals of Greek Schools in Australia who were with us for the translations which added another dimension to the official ones! All the principals at the Anargyros Korialenios school on the island of Spetses. The educational aspect of our tour was not confined to our own education. We were part of a conference, "Greek and Australian Perspectives on Contemporary Educational Issues", with the Pedagogical Institute in Athens. We shared thoughts on multiculturalism, and other educational philosophical issues. Debate was rigorous and it is obvious that Greeks are passionate about debate! They seemed more immersed in the theoretical issues than their Australian counterparts. At all the schools we visited issues were raised about approaches to multicultural education. The differences in approaches seemed to me to emerge from the fact that those refugees/migrants etc who are coming now to Greece, especially since it has become part of the European Union, are largely from countries with whom Greece has historically been at war. They are therefore coming to grips with a complex issue. Both in Athens and in Thessaloniki we visited multicultural schools where principals and teachers are striving to provide for children from countries such as Turkey, Romania, Albania and Russia. Despite having fewer resources than we are used to, small classes and dedicated staff were evident. The children, like those the world over, were happy and full of life. Students from Sikourion Primary School read out a message to students of Hamilton South P.S. On our last day of travel we passed by the snow capped Mt Olympus. We stopped in the Tembi Valley at a little school on the outskirts of Larissa, The Sikourion School. This school was to be Hamilton South's sister school. It is situated in a small village on the southern outskirts of Larissa. The equivalent of our District Superintendent and the Principal, Mr Paskalis Andreopoulos were there to greet us, as was a television crew. They apologized about the buildings - telling us they were only temporary. "Next year we will be moving to new buildings." We asked how long they had been in the temporary buildings, only to be told, "Since 1907". The formalities were conducted with great enthusiasm. The principals joined in the Greek dancing and two students, Maria and Sophie, read a beautiful statement to the children of Hamilton South. It was received with great interest on my return. A dialogue between the children here and there has begun with return correspondence. It is hard to find words to describe our experience. How can we, as Australians return the generosity shown to us? We all came home realizing that the Greek civilization has contributed enormously to western civilization. For that reason alone, imparting this to our students whether they be of Greek origin or not, is important. We came away enthusiastic about our role as educators and leaders, inspired with renewed zeal to ensure that Greek Australians value their heritage and culture and that in all our schools there is an appreciation of what Greece has provided for our world.
