COVENTRY UNIVERSITY VISIT Dr. David Gillingham Dean & Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Business, Environment, and Society and Mr. Ioannis Soilemetzidis European Development Manager & Associate Lecturer from the Coventry University in the UK visited Americanos College on March 22 nd, 2007 and gave an interesting presentation on Coventry University, the campus and the city, as well as transfer opportunities available to the SPORTS CLUB MAY 2007 students of Americanos College upon completion of their Diploma or Bachelor degrees at our College. There was a significant turnout of students and faculty and a lot of interest through a lot of questions from the students to the guest speakers. If anyone needs any further information on such opportunities with the Coventry University you can contact with Mr. Avraam Stephani. at the finals with a draw result. Everyone played with a lot of enthusiasm for about three hours. Also, a lot of student fans were present cheering and enjoying the games. The Sports Club organized a football tournament on March 23 rd at the Campeone football ground in Anthoupoli. A team of faculty and staff played against a student team
CHESS CLUB Americanos College Chess club has been up and running. The Chess club members have been meeting regularly playing friendly games and preparing for the Chess tournament. DANCE CLUB along with his friendly personality have been making the Salsa steps fun and easy. All the members of the club seem to be enjoying the dance lessons and they would love to see more of you joining the club. The College Dance Club has been very actively growing. The Club meets on Fridays at 3:00 p.m. and they have been dancing to the rhythms of Salsa so far. The professionalism of Antonis Antoniou, the dance instructor, EASTER TREATS DAY JOB FAIR Students of Hotel Management, Travel & The Easter Treats afternoon at the Cafeteria gave students some of the Easter spirit on March 29 th. A lot of students stopped by for a sweet break with some tasty chocolate Easter eggs. Hossain, on the picture helped with the delivery of the chocolate eggs around the College. Tourism and Culinary Arts, who are eligible for their practical training this summer,
lined up on March 28 th waiting for the opportunity to interview with various restaurants and/or hotels in Cyprus. EDUCATIONAL TRIP On March 21 st, students of the wines and spirits module (HOT 206) enjoyed an educational trip to Limassol. The first stop was the LOEL winery, where the group was able to see the machinery used in the wine making process. Students were also shown the bottling procedure for Zivania and the huge barrels in which Commandaria is aged for 8-10 years. The class was given the opportunity to taste wine or have a glass of juice, before receiving their gift of two bottles of wine. At the five star St. Raphael resort the students were given a detailed tour of the facilities including restaurants, kitchen, conference room, leisure facilities, gardens and a guest bedroom in the new executive wing. Following the tour, everyone was offered juice and delicious desserts. HISTORY SEMINAR Mrs. Diana Weston Markides, a well known historian, was the guest speaker of Mr. Demosthenous History of Cyprus class and gave a presentation on Nicosia during 1878-1960. Mrs. Markides is married to a Cypriot and has been living in Cyprus for a number of years. She published several articles on Cypriot History in scholarly journals and is currently working in a study of Hellenism, irredentism and the British Empire. She is also a Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London.
FACE-TO-FACE Ms. Maria Kanari Ms. Maria Kanari has been working as an Admissions Officer at the Admissions Department of Americanos College. She has a Diploma in Secretarial Studies and a Bachelor degree in Turkish Studies from the University of Cyprus. She was working here as a part-timer from 2000 until she finished her studies. Since her graduation in 2005, she has been working as an Admissions Officer on a full time basis. What is the most enjoyable part of your position? Keeping in touch with people from all around the world and getting to know different kinds of civilizations and cultures. What do you like the most about this College? The most I like about this college is the multi-cultural environment and the fact that I meet different people every day. I also enjoy the good working environment and the good friendships I have gained throughout the 7 years I ve been working here. What do you think about dealing with foreign students on a daily basis? Dealing with foreign students on a daily basis is very exciting because you get in touch with many people from different nations with cultures totally different than our culture and you get to know how other people behave. At the same time it is a little bit difficult because you must be careful for no misunderstandings to take place. You are communicating with students from all over the world. Which country are you most interested in and would like to visit soon? Actually, I would like to visit all countries and get to know different kinds of civilizations and cultures. What is the most common question that potential students ask before they apply to Americanos College? They usually ask if they can work during studying and if we have more students from their countries in our college. What are your hobbies and interests? I enjoy going out with my friends to places with live music, I enjoy exercising when I have free time. I also love football and for this reason I ve become a football referee. What are your goals? To become better and better everyday in whatever I do and to improve both my personal and career life A piece of advice to Americanos College students? Never stop learning in life, always keep the good memories in your head and be openminded. What is your motto of life? Life is too short, enjoy every moment of it!
THE WORLD AT A GLANCE EARTH-LIKE PLANET FOUND (CNN online) European astronomers have found the most Earth-like planet outside our solar system, and here's what it might be like to live there: The "sun" wouldn't burn brightly. It would hang close, large and red in the sky, glowing faintly like a charcoal ember. And it probably would never set if you lived on the sunny side of the planet. You could have a birthday party every 13 days because that's how fast this new planet circles its sun-like star. But watch the cake -- you'd weigh a whole lot more than you do on Earth. You might be able to keep your current wardrobe. The temperature in this alien setting will likely be a lot like Earth's -- not too hot, not too cold. Ορισμένα φάρμακα επίσης επιδρούν στον εγκέφαλο, όπως για παράδειγμα φάρμακα για την επιληψία, αλλά δεν λαμβάνονται από τους χρήστες γι' αυτό το λόγο, για την θεραπευτική τους δηλαδή λειτουργία. Το Rotalin είναι ένα φάρμακο το οποίο μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για τη διαταραχή ελλειμματικής προσοχής/υπερκινητικότητας αλλά επίσης χρησιμοποιείται τα τελευταία χρόνια και σαν ναρκωτικό. Μιλάμε για «ναρκωτικά» όταν χρησιμοποιεί κανείς αυτές τις ουσίες με σκοπό να βρεθεί κάτω από τη επήρεια τους. Τα ναρκωτικά μπορούν να διακριθούν σε ομάδες με διάφορους τρόπους: για παράδειγμα νόμιμες (νομικά αποδεκτές) και παράνομες (απαγορευμένες) ουσίες. Το αλκοόλ και ο καπνός είναι νόμιμα. Το χασίς, η κοκαΐνη, οι αμφεταμίνες, το XTC και η ηρωίνη είναι παράνομα. Η πιο συχνή κατηγοριοποίηση είναι αυτή που βασίζεται στις συνέπειες που έχει η κάθε ναρκωτική ουσία στην ανθρώπινη συνείδηση. Τα περισσότερα ναρκωτικά εντάσσονται σε αυτές τις κατηγορίες. Κάποια ναρκωτικά είναι πιο δύσκολο να κατηγοριοποιηθούν. Τα ναρκωτικά που κατευνάζουν είναι: το αλκοόλ, τα οπιούχα, τα ηρεμιστικά (βενζοδιαζεπίνες, χάπια για τον ύπνο) το όπιο, η μορφίνη, η ηρωίνη. Επίσης, το χασίς συνήθως λαμβάνεται για την ηρεμιστική επίδρασή του. Τα ναρκωτικά που δίνουν ενέργεια είναι: καφεΐνη, νικοτίνη, XTC, κοκαΐνη, αμφεταμίνες. Το χασίς συνήθως χρησιμοποιείται εξαιτίας των καταπραϋντικών συνεπειών του αλλά μπορεί επίσης να προκαλέσει αλλαγές και στην αντίληψη.
