2 Ιντροδυχτιον βψ ιανε Hi Everyone, Hope your all keeping well and that you will enjoy another great Newsletter. Well I think one of the best bits of news this year is that Cleo has found her forever home, she had been waiting almost 3 years and now, finally, she has the best home ever with Penelope and Bill. They just love her to bits. We now have Buzz and Mambo as our long termers, although Buzz is going for a wee sleepover soon so watch this space!!! As mentioned in the last Newsletter this has been an amazing start to the year on the rehoming front, we have already homed about 40 beautiful hounds since January. Here's hoping it continues. It was great to see so many of you and your houndies at the Fun Day, it was touch and go with the weather in the morning but we were lucky it turned into the nicest day ever. Joe found his forever home at the Fun Day with Caro and Graham in Golspie. We also have a few potential homes coming up as a result of the Fun Day, and we raised over 2,000 so it was just the best result in every way. Huge thanks again to everyone who made the day possible and helped it run like clockwork. We are still planning on going ahead with the Hope Kennel extension, and if we can afford it, we are also planning on refurbishing the outside area here for the lodgers pens, so they are on a concrete base. We also hope to buy another 3 roofed kennels for GAGAH HQ. This means that all the outside pens will have shelter and shade and it will no longer be a mudbath if it rains. I must also say a special thank you to the Staff of Pets At Home, both in Inverurie and Aberdeen. We just recently took delivery of 40 bags of dog food with more on the way. This alone will save us hundreds of pounds, and their continued support has been just superb! Welcome to all you new GAGAH owners, some of whom I met at the Fun Day. Thank you for giving the houndies such lovely forever homes, and remember we are here to help and support you all anytime you need it, no matter what it might be. Despite some dodgy weather the BA Stores Weekend was once again a great success. There have been so many events already this year, with more planned, so look out for the GAGAH e mails and check out the Forum. If you want to come along and help out, everyone Is welcome. Another thing to get excited about is the new GAGAH Website. I've had a sneaky preview and it looks superb and very professional. Thanks to Bill for all the hard work it has taken him so far. 18 Αδοπτιον Φορ Πετσ Πετσ Ατ Ηοµε ΓΑΓΑΗ Τηρεε Φριενδσ Αλλ Ωορκινγ Τογετηερ βψ Αλφιε On the 19 th of July this year Adoption For Pets presented GAGAH with a cheque for 7,000, and to quote Diane, It`s still sinking in This money will help all of us at GAGAH to rescue and rehome even more dogs. But how did this happen? It all started four years ago when we went along to the Aberdeen branch of Pets At Home, to ask if we could set up outside the store, and sell raffle tickets and bring our two dogs along with us to raise awareness. They said certainly you can. At the time Stuart was the Manager, and we could not believe what a warm welcome we got from him and all the other staff, when we turned up a few weeks later. Plus all the staff made a big fuss of Frankie and Jess too. Since our first time there we`ve progressed from only Annie and me, Frankie and Jess, a paste table, a few business cards and some handouts. To now where we have a proper heavy duty display table, kindly donated by Celia and Roy who live in the borders. The GAGAH banner, two display tripods with loads of photos and information, a mountain of handouts and a miniature version of the Happy Hound Store with cushions and bracelets on sale. Within in next two weeks we should have the new GAGAH pop up banner on display too. Lastly when we were at the store on the 13 th and 14 th of July we had a total of 12 humans and 17 hounds helping out over the weekend. Little did we know on our first visit that this was the start of what was to become a great friendship with Pets At Home and that would also lead to an additional friendship with Adoption For Pets too. I believe that all three organisations are successful because we all have a genuine love for animals, and we are prepared to work as hard as we can and do what it takes to make things a success. Over the next two years we went along to Pets At Home, and build up a friendship with all the staff, who by now were offering us cups of tea any time we were there. We have in that time raised over 1,000 and have spoken to countless people who have been converted once they met the wonderful GAGAH dogs. It has in some cases led to several GAGAH dogs being rehomed.

19 Late on last year two amazing things happened. Firstly when I was in Pets At Home, Jackie the Manager told me they were starting up a new scheme called VIP Pets and they had nominated GAGAH to be included in VIP Pets as one of their local charities. This is what`s involved, you fill in the form, then get your VIP Card. In return when you become a VIP member you get a Welcome Pack, 10% off voucher, 2 key fobs, money saving offers, regular expert hints and tips, exclusive offers on food, toys and pet accessories. What happens every time you use your VIP card is you earn Lifelines which are points, and they are sent to Pets At Home head office. They are then converted into Gift Vouchers, which are then sent to Diane at GAGAH headquarters near Methlick. Then the vouchers can be used to buy things for the GAGAH dogs, and when the vouchers are used they generate Lifelines points too. The second thing was, Jackie the Manager asked me if GAGAH would like to be included in the Santa Paws appeal, and we were more than happy to say yes. What happens is around Christmas time there is a Christmas tree placed near the store entrance, and customers are invited to donate food, toys or money to the nominated local charity (GAGAH) and all they have to do is leave anything at the foot of the tree. When the festive season was over we were given what was left beneath the tree, which was an amazing amount of dog food, biscuits, toys and we were presented with a cheque for 309. We were knocked out by such generosity, and felt very humble because out of all the organisations that could have been picked it was GAGAH that was going to benefit. I think about how giving people are, and the kindness shown by Pets At Home and the public is enough to leave me speechless, and anyone who knows me will find that amazing in itself. A few weeks later we went along to Aberdeen Pets At Home to be presented with the Santa Paws cheque. All GAGAH was asked to do in return for all that we got from the Santa Paws appeal was to e mail Adoption For Pets to confirm that we had received the cheque for 309, and that was the day that things changed and Adoption For Pets became part of the GAGAH family. I feel at this point I should explain just how Pets At Home and Adoption For Pets started out. Pets at Home opened its first store in 1991 and it has been inspired by the belief that every pet has the right to live a safe, happy and healthy life. This led them to form the charitable foundation Support Adoption for Pets in Although Adoption For Pets works alongside Pets At Home, it has to be made clear that it now operates completely independently with a dedicated Charity Team and voluntary Board of Trustees. Their aim is to support hundreds of animal charities, who have actively re-homed or provided sanctuary for pets over the years. It was the Board of Trustees that recently granted 7,000 to GAGAH, and it`s they who we must all be thankfull to for their kindness and generosity. Support Adoption For Pets is not only a grant awarding charity; it s also a re-homing animal charity that helped to rehome 63,000 pets in The Support Adoption For Pets team itself is full of committed individuals who are devoted to their pets and animal welfare. They want to make sure through a range of animal rescue initiatives and fundraising events that abandoned pets have a second chance at happiness. Pets At Home s role in supporting Support Adoption For Pets comes through its colleagues, customers and suppliers, and is key to the animal charity s success. Their support and hard work of everyone involved, has contributed to raising over 1.65 million in the last 12 months. And a final word from Adoption For Pets to GAGAH - You know how much hard work goes into raising funds and so do we. We take great care to ensure that our donor contributions are used wisely. We look favourably at animal welfare organisations and re-homing centres, based and operating in the UK, with the best track records. We are keen that money is distributed to the organisations with the potential to make the most difference.

20 I hope that explains why GAGAH feels so good to have the support of two great organisations such as Pets At Home and Support Adoption For Pets. As I said all I had to do was e mail Adoption For Pets to let them know we received the Santa Paws cheque for 309. My thank you e mail went to Justine Quirk the Fundraising & Communications Co-ordinator at Adoption For Pets, and in the course of exchanging e mails about GAGAH, telling her who we are and what we do, I got one to say that Justine would give me a call. Thinking a call from Justine would be a bit more personal than an e mail, all I expected was a nice chat. But that was not what happened, and I have to say what I heard left me stunned. Justine told me that GAGAH was the kind of organisation that Adoption For Pets was prepared to support, and she thought we might be eligible for funding from them. Charities and organisations will give funding, but they will not give money for Vet bills. So when Justine said they would be prepared to consider giving us money for Vet bills, I was stunned, and I asked her to please repeat what she said. It was true, and they would send the funding application paperwork out to us. Enter Derek (Dexter`s Dad) he was going to be doing all the application paperwork for GAGAH. We also had to have two referees, and we want to thank Kath who does the GAGAH Awareness Wear, for being the first referee, and Diane who owns Cupcakes and Crafts in Ellon for being our second referee, we couldn`t have done it without you both. By now Derek was communicating with Michelle Watkins at Adoption For Pets, who is the Rehoming Centre Coordinator and is responsible for looking after all the Funding applications. Michelle deals directly with the Board of Trustees, who consider every application, and decide if a grant is to be given, and how much. We were under the impression that an amount of 5,000 would be the most anyone could expect, and in conversation Derek we thought that if we were very lucky enough to get anything it might be about 1,000 and in our wildest dreams it might be 2,000 although we would be happy with anything, and expected nothing to be honest, it was unknown. All the paperwork was filled in and returned, and a few weeks went by, and then the day arrived when a decision was to be made, Wednesday the 3 rd of July. I was working and got a phone call from Annie to say that an e mail had arrived, and she read it to me over the phone. Hello Alfie, Hoping to make your day, Michelle is just on the phone to Derek, so I have the delightful task of giving you the news that the Trustees didn`t award GAGAH the 5,000 you applied for. They awarded you 7,000. Hope this brightens your day. Speak soon Alfie, Justine I could not believe what I had just heard, I felt like one of the people on Secret Millionaire, when the person says who they are and hands over a big cheque. My mind started racing, thinking about all the things that GAGAH could do with 7,000, and the cost of the Vet bills would not be a worry for once. I just wanted to go up to complete strangers and tell them what had just happened. When I realised that we could help so many more dogs, it felt as if I had won the lottery. That`s when I realised the full value of the gift that the Board of Trustees had just given to GAGAH, and it had happened so quickly. The real cheque reached Diane last Friday, and now there will be a Big Cheque Presentation along at Pets At Home in Aberdeen within the next few weeks, so watch the Forum for details. It would be great if loads of hounds and humans came along to make it a special occasion. This was the icing on the cake, but there were a couple of other things that happened before that. Louise (Benjy`s Mum) was contacted by Pets At Home, and I`ll now let her take up the story. I received a call from Lynn Stoddard with Pets At Home, she is the Charity Administrator based at their headquarters in Cheshire, and she offered GAGAH a pallet of damaged bags of dog food. It was being sent to the Aberdeen store and it was ours if we could pick it up as soon as it arrived. The store called to say the dog food had arrived and off I set to meet up with Bill and his Freelander. Bill and I met with Manager Dave, Tony and Bob at the back door of the Aberdeen store. They helped us load the bags into both our cars. The staff could not have been more helpful and said that they enjoy supporting GAGAH as we communicate well with them and responded quickly when notified that they have full goody bins for us. They also said they enjoyed reading the GAGAH Newsletter, and I have to say it`s great to be able to tell everyone just how much they do for GAGAH. It`s a real pleasure to go along to both Aberdeen and Inverurie stores. Sorry this is the only photo I have of the happy event, and in their boyish enthusiasm the guys managed to obscure the very gift that GAGAH were so kindly given. I sent a copy of the photo along with my thank you to Pets at Home HQ, and Lynn replied immediately saying that she was pleased to hear from us, and only glad to help out GAGAH in some way.

21 What we received were 40 X 15kilo bags of dogs food, and some of this will be heading off to Hope kennels and to Karen`s, to help feed all their hungry rescue dogs. This has saved GAGAH hundreds of pounds, and it`s just another example of the type of thing that Pets At Home does for us. We are so lucky to have their continued support. On the fourth weekend in April we were happy to go along to Pets At Home in Aberdeen, to help out with the Adoption For Pets Spring Fundraising Drive. We had a great two days, the main purpose was to sell as many Spring Fundraising Drive raffle tickets as we possibly could. We met loads of people, and raised Greyhound and GAGAH awareness yet again. We were pleased to give something back to Adoption For Pets and be part of the event that went on to raise a total of over 300,000 As I`m writing this, I`ve received an e mail from Diane to say that another cheque for GAGAH has arrived from Adoption For Pets, and it`s for 390. This has come to us from the amount raised from the Spring Fundraising Drive, and again I am amazed by the generosity of this organisation. It was a complete surprise, as we were not expecting anything. We were just glad to help their cause. All I`ll say is that any time we are involved in anything to do with Pets At Home and Adoption For Pets we know we re going to get lots of help, and have a great time. It`s good to know we are all part of a team, and the team is getting bigger. So if you want to be part of the team you would be very welcome to come along to our next event at Pets At Home, on Saturday the 10 th and Sunday the 11 th of August from 10am to 4pm on both days. 29 ΚΑΡΕΝ ΧΗΑΡΛΟΤΤΕ ΗΟΛΛΨ (Ανγελσ Ον Εαρτη) We meet lots of different people as we go about our business, and if we are very lucky we get to meet a very special individual that leaves a very distinct impression on us. However that isn`t strictly true, because this is about three very special individuals. Their dedication and love for all their four legged friends is indeed truly mind blowing. Starting their day at 7.30am and finishing at midnight, every day, with no days off. This is the remarkable story of a dedicated family, and because of what they do they will always have my total respect and admiration, and I am proud to say I know them. I think most of us would love to live where they are, with all the wonderful animals, but I`ll keep the location a secret for now, just in case there`s a big rush to go there. Alfie Hello, I`m Karen the Mum and my daughters and team members are Charlotte who is 16 and Holly who is 7. We have lots of animals including, dogs, cats, sheep, goats, pigs, horses and donkeys. The list goes on, and since our are reading the GAGAH Newsletter I`ll tell you all about our rescue dogs, and they are just about every shape, size and breed you can think of. There is our smallest, a bundle of energy teacup Chihuahua called CoCo, up to our largest, a Newfoundland cross St. Bernard called Lilly Pad We have 20 years experience rescueing dogs in England, and we have decided to use this knowledge and put our efforts into helping Greyhound rescue. It all started 18 years ago when we got our first greyhound, a black girl called Nit Nat She had been bought off the track at Belle View, then she was coursed and developed an injury to her foot. Her foot was left untreated and she got gangrene, so was facing being put down. Then we got her and luckily she only had to loose her toe. After she came into our lives we were in love with Greyhounds. Our second greyhound was Elfie, a male who at eight had been brought over from Rome. He had a pin in all the way down his right leg, and a heart as big a house. Charlotte and Elfie were inseparable. Next came Archie, dumped at 12 years old, no teeth, tongue hanging out, emaciated. The hooligans of the family at that time were two saluki/greyhound (sisters) and two bedlington/whippets (sisters) all off gypsies, and by now life was mad. Sadly both of the bedlington/whippets passed away last year, just two weeks apart. At only three years old, Holly my little girl adopted a Greyhound called Bonnie from the SGS, she was just an angel, perfect from having her for two weeks! They were both devoted to each other. Unfortunately Bonnie developed bone cancer in her shoulder which passed to her lungs, so we had to let her go. Holly was heartbroken, and so we had to phone everywhere trying to get Holly a new Greyhound to try to mend her broken heart. A week later Joe and Rose arrived, and not long after that Grace a whippet lucher arrived, who I am sure you have all seen at the GAHAH Fun Day just a few weeks ago.

31 Speaking of the GAGAH Fun Day, I`ll tell you how we became involved with GAGAH. When I rang Diane at GAGAH, to explain about Holly`s beloved Bonnie passing away and they gave us Rose and that`s how we got involved. Then Diane asked me if I would like to foster. Our track record isn`t very good, because we failed six times, but now I`m pleased to say we do foster for GAGAH. Then came the phone call that was going to rearrange my life, and Diane was asking me can you take ZAC He has chronic extreme separation anxiety. Wow does he!!! I picked him up from the Liz and Phil at Hope Kennels, not seeing the relief on Liz s face. He screamed all the way home, and would not leave my side. Zac is for sure the love of my life, but he has destroyed crates and my car. The only way he can be left is in a special welded crate in my car. I have had the police at my car before, because of the noise he makes. Needless to say I offered to let them look after him next time I had to go shopping, and of course they declined. Despite all that he is loyal, clever, a great swimmer, obedient, safe with other animal, but still can`t be left a year down the line. Next came Tommy a big boy from Lex s with a huge reputation. He is a complete star with everything, and just wanted to be by Charlotte s side all the time. Of course we adopted him, and he`s the only Greyhound who NEVER has a muzzle on, whether he is with the geese, goats, sheep, cats or dogs. We are so proud of him!!! Last but not least is the incredible Rose, she came for fostering and she adopted me. However that`s not all, there are lots of others we have fostered and rehomed. Trilby who was just an absolute darling. Loved people, and was quite happy to cuddle up to the smallest dog or cat, he was next. Tetly (now Buddy) was another big boy like Tommy, and I`m pleased to say he is now in a wonderful loving home, where he goes running with his Mum. While she is down at her horses he has a lovely big sofa to live on Spooky, was a small bitch who went out to a lovely home with another boy Greyhound. Joey has just recently found a home, when she was at the GAGAH Fun Day. He was a lovely loving black and white dog, who loves his food. Bud was next, and he went to England a few weeks ago to go to live with my daughter Kelly and her boyfriend. They have a Jack Russell, Lasapso and a Bearded Dragon. He was the biggest Greyhound we have ever had in our care, with a heart just as big. Larry was a lovely big black boy with a bit of white, who went to a home with ducks, sheep, goats, three other dogs and two lovely owners. And then there was Santa and Elf, who came in just before Christmas. They were covered in urine burns, totally underweight, but still two lovely lads. After a lot of feeding up and a lot of love Elf s new Mummy and Daddy came to see him, and they just fell in love instantly. Safe to say he has gone from rags to riches, and then at one of the walks Santa s new home came along. There were lots of tears saying goodbye to this lovely lad because he had gone from being in such a state, to a lovely big proud Greyhound who got on with everyone and was one of Charlotte s favourite s.

33 This has all been done thanks to my kids hard work, a tough set of cats, all my dogs, a goat called Jeffery and a sheep called Ester and various pigs and geese. We can t save them all but we can do our little bit in each corner. which helps a lot. So before you all come rushing round to move in, as everyone who visits has said. Here is a typical days routine, and this is what needs to be done every day, no matter what the weather is. The day starts at 7.30am Zac and incredible Rose leap on my bed telling me its time to get up. Then once were up everyone wants out. Then we clean out the tack room, and then Lilly and Sally my two Saluki Greyhounds get their breakfast. Then it`s time to clean the utility room. That`s only the warm up, before the real work starts Big Rosie (g.s.d), little Tommy the Border Terrier and Nana the Border Collie get fed, then they go out and play. Then its my Rotti Tyler and Daphnie my St. Bernard who get fed. Then its to the kennels. Charlotte lets out our three German Shepards, Tasha, Amber, Lady and also Bazz the Greyhound cross German Shepard. Their run then gets washed down and all the kennels get cleaned. Next the GAGAH dogs get walked, along with Charlottes Spanish Mastiff called Niebla She has her own kennel and run as she is terrified of everyone because she has been so badly treated. Then its work for us, grooming dogs that brings in income to help fund our animals. Lunch time is Tommy`s and Kye`s feed time, along with my Collie/Beardy Lucky and Deerhound/Lurcher Lass, and GSD Harry. Then our lady Pyrenean Narnia and Spanish Mastiff cross????? get fed. Amongst the day all the gardens and drive gets cleaned up after the dogs. In the afternoon my kitchen gets cleaned and the dogs in there get fed. This is the puppy and old dog ward where we have: CoCo a 18 week old teacup Chihuahua puppy.. Simba a one year old Labrador Phillie a one year old Greyhound Shadow a one year old Mastiff cross Lab. Cookie a 12 year old Chihuahua Sweetie and her daughter Cookie a 7 year old Chihuahua cross Poodle. Raskle a 12 year old blind cross breed Sophie Bend an 18 year old Collie cross Mille a 3 year old Jack Russel and last but not least Pink a 12 year old Staffie cross Then my other three Greyhounds get fed in the lounge, and on the sofa of course. Then at tea time last but not least my two Mastiffs Bow Bow and Spice, Zac, my boxer Ellie, my Collie cross Mollie, and old Greyhound Buster get fed. At bed time my two Sheps and cross go to bed and have there tea, and the GAGAH Greyhounds. Among all that there are horses, sheep, lambs, pigs, goats, rabbits and cats to care for. The day ends about 12 midnight, when everyone is tired, warm and fed, humans too.

35 Our dogs play out and about all day. My thinking is it`s natural for them to run and play with their friends as they are pack animals. Sadly all these animals are rescued, some from worse homes than others. I`ve forgot to mention Hurcules my male Pyrenean who we rescued from Spain. He was tied up with a barbed wire collar and beaten for 4 years. Although he has issues he can be very loving, we believe time is a great healer. Then there`s mad Dave, also from Spain. He had the same treatment as Hurcules, but not for so long. He`s very loving, but just mad. He wants to run and run and all day long, but never gets tired out. Last but not least is Charlotte's Rotti, he`s in charge of guarding and looking after everyone. All the dogs that are here now and there predecessors all have sad tales to tell, and when we have time we will write a book.

37 This was our fourth year taking part in this nationwide event. Thanks to Kelly for doing the organising this year and getting all the hounds that took part a GBGW medal. We all had a very pleasant walk, and I think there was a lot more chatting than walking. What a lovely relaxed day, but Kelly had to rush off to tend a stall at a kids event, and most of us stood yapping for ages. Nice to catch up with old friends and make some now ones. This year`s total was 2,638 Hounds walking, and there were a number of other breeds too This is a great way to have a nice social event and raise awareness too. I also love looking at all the other photos from the day on the GBGW website. This lets us know we are not alone in what we do, and there are other groups working hard saving these lovely hounds.

38 The Amazing Fire Rescue Dog This is a true story, and it has not been set up in any way. During an early morning response to a house fire, Firefighters were amazed as a mother dog risked her life to save her puppies from the fire surrounding the house. The mother dog, Amanda, raced back and forth from the house, putting her 10-day-old puppies in the safest place she could find, a Fire Truck locker. She didn't stop racing back into the smoke and fire until all of her puppies were safely away from the fire. The Firefighters on the scene could not believe their eyes. Most people have never seen a dog this smart or brave! Bringing each one out, six trips into the fire, and no one could stop her. All the fireman could do was to try to keep a little water spray on her to cool her down as she kept making trips running back through the open door into the fire. You can see some of the singed hair on her back end, forehead and lower legs. After rescuing all the pups from the blaze, Amanda sat down next to them protecting them with her body. Onlookers called an emergency vet and she and her pups were rushed to the hospital. Aside from one puppy being treated for serious burns, the entire family are alive and well... thanks to the bravery of Amanda! What a heroic mother! How Great!
