The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 20:16-18, IN THOSE DAYS, Paul had decided to sail past Ephesos, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost. And from Miletos he sent to Ephesos and called to him the elders of the church. And when they came to him, he said to them: "Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, 'it is more blessed to give than to receive.' The Gospel According to John 17:1-13 At that time, Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you gave me to do; and now, Father, you glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made. "I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you; for I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you did send me. I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are mine; all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. 5 Ψυχοσάββατο Το Σάββατο πριν από την Κυριακή της Πεντηκοστής, λέγεται - «Σάββατο των Ψυχών» ή Ψυχοσάββατο. Είναι το δεύτερο από τα δύο Ψυχοσάββατα του έτους (το πρώτο επιτελείται το Σάββατο πριν από την Κυριακή της Απόκρεω). Ο λόγος που το καθιέρωσε η Εκκλησία μας, παρ' ότι κάθε Σάββατο είναι αφιερωμένο στους κεκοιμημένους, είναι ο εξής: Επειδή πολλοί κατά καιρούς απέθαναν μικροί ή στην ξενιτιά ή στη θάλασσα ή στα όρη και τους κρημνούς ή και μερικοί, λόγω πτώχειας, δεν αξιώθηκαν των διατεταγμένων μνημοσυνών, «οι θείοι Πατέρες φιλανθρώπως κινούμενοι θέσπισαν το μνημόσυνο αυτό υπέρ πάντων των άπ' αιώνος εύσεβώς τελευτησάντων Χριστιανών». Saturday of the Souls Those that have departed from us and from these fleeting things, do Thou settle in the tabernacles of Thy chosen; and grant them rest with the righteous, O Immortal Savior. For though as men they have sinned on earth, yet by the mediation of the Theotokos who gave Thee birth, do Thou, since Thou art the Lord Who art free of sin, forgive them their failings, both voluntary and involuntary, that with one voice we may cry out for them: Alleluia. Our Holy Orthodox Christian Church wishes to commune with joy over those who were risen from the dead through the Lord, Who gave us eternal life--not only the host of Holy Angels and all those who live on earth, but also the souls of all those who have died from the beginning of humanity, with whom we are bound with the unseen tethers of love, belonging to the Church of Christ and the unity of our very nature. This is why, following the forty-day celebration of the Resurrection of Christ and the nine days of praising the Holy Ascension of the Lord into the heavens, the Holy Church, on this Saturday, the eve of the last and great feast day, Pentecost, which concludes the Paschal cycle established the commemoration of all of our forefathers, fathers, and brethren, extending to their souls, through grace-filled love, the light of the Resurrection of Christ. Such commemoration, as with all other commemorations in the Church, is the communion of love, witness to the fact that death is not the annihilation of being, but the departure into another sphere of life, with which the law of grace-filled love binds us. If the souls of our dear ones are, by means of their righteousness, in the Eternal Light of the Lord, then by our prayers for them we spiritually join in the light of this grace. If the souls are suffering for their sins, then we pour upon them the light which can draw them out of the dark of sin and enjoin with the endless Light of Christ. We here on earth, by the power of love, help one another here, support each other, encounter each other, and our life falls into disarray, suffering and destruction when this law of accord, of harmony and love is violated, for these are the foundation of all creation. This is why prayer for the dead, who are alive "over there," in the sphere of existence yet inconceivable to us now, is so endearing, so precious: it is the expression of a mighty force which unites heaven and earth--love, for God is love.

6 Commemoration of the Holy Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council On the seventh Sunday of Pascha, we commemorate the holy Godbearing Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council. The Commemoration of the First Ecumenical Council has been celebrated by the Church of Christ from ancient times. The Lord Jesus Christ left the Church a great promise, I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Mt. 16:18). Although the Church of Christ on earth will pass through difficult struggles with the Enemy of salvation, it will emerge victorious. The holy martyrs bore witness to the truth of the Savior s words, enduring suffering and death for confessing Christ, but the persecutor s sword is shattered by the Cross of Christ. Persecution of Christians ceased during the fourth century, but heresies arose within the Church itself. One of the most pernicious of these heresies was Arianism. Arius, a priest of Alexandria, was a man of immense pride and ambition. In denying the divine nature of Jesus Christ and His equality with God the Father, Arius falsely taught that the Savior is not consubstantial with the Father, but is only a created being. A local Council, convened with Patriarch Alexander of Alexandria presiding, condemned the false teachings of Arius. However, Arius would not submit to the authority of the Church. He wrote to many bishops, denouncing the decrees of the local Council. He spread his false teaching throughout the East, receiving support from certain Eastern bishops. Investigating these dissentions, the holy emperor Constantine (May 21) consulted Bishop Hosius of Cordova (Aug. 27), who assured him that the heresy of Arius was directed against the most fundamental dogma of Christ s Church, and so he decided to convene an Ecumenical Council. In the year 325, 318 bishops representing Christian Churches from various lands gathered together at Nicea. Among the assembled bishops were many confessors who had suffered during the persecutions, and who bore the marks of torture upon their bodies. Also participating in the Council were several great luminaries of the Church: Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia (December 6 and May 9), Saint Spyridon, Bishop of Tremithos (December 12), and others venerated by the Church as holy Fathers. With Patriarch Alexander of Alexandria came his deacon, Athanasius [who later became Patriarch of Alexandria (May 2 and January 18)]. He is called the Great, for he was a zealous champion for the purity of Orthodoxy. In the Sixth Ode of the Canon for today s Feast, he is referred to as the thirteenth Apostle. The emperor Constantine presided over the sessions of the Council. In his speech, responding to the welcome by Bishop Eusebius of Caesarea, he said, God has helped me cast down the impious might of the persecutors, but more distressful for me than any blood spilled in battle is for a soldier, is the internal strife in the Church of God, for it is more ruinous. Arius, with seventeen bishops among his supporters, remained arrogant, but his teaching was repudiated and he was excommunicated from the Church. In his speech, the holy deacon Athanasius conclusively refuted the blasphemous opinions of Arius. The heresiarch Arius is depicted in iconography sitting on Satan s knees, or in the mouth of the Beast of the Deep (Rev. 13). The Fathers of the Council declined to accept a Symbol of Faith (Creed) proposed by the Arians. Instead, they affirmed the Orthodox Symbol of Faith. Saint Constantine asked the Council to insert into the text of the Symbol of Faith the word consubstantial, which he had heard in the speeches of the bishops. The Fathers of the Council unanimously accepted this suggestion. In the Nicean Creed, the holy Fathers set forth and confirmed the Apostolic teachings about Christ s divine nature. The heresy of Arius was exposed and repudiated as an error of haughty reason. After resolving this chief dogmatic question, the Council also issued Twelve Canons on questions of churchly administration and discipline. Also decided was the date for the celebration of Holy Pascha. By decision of the Council, Holy Pascha should not be celebrated by Christians on the same day with the Jewish Passover, but on the first Sunday after the first full moon of the vernal equinox (which occured on March 22 in 325). The First Ecumenical Council is also commemorated on May 29.

7 Κυριακή των Αγίων Πατέρων της Α' Οικουμενικής Συνόδου Την εβδόμη κατά σειρά Κυριακή από το Πάσχα, η Εκκλησία τοποθετεί την εορτή των Αγίων 318 Θεοφόρων Πατέρων, οι οποίοι συγκρότησαν την Α Οικουμενική Σύνοδο στη Νίκαια το 325 μ.χ. Η Α Οικ. Σύνοδος συγκλήθηκε σε κλίμα ελευθερίας και ισοτιμίας, που επεκράτησε μεταξύ των θρησκευμάτων μετά το Διάταγμα του Μεγάλου Κωνσταντίνου περί ανεξιθρησκείας. Στη Σύνοδο αυτή έδωσε την μαρτυρία τους υπέρ της πίστεως ο Άγιος Σπυρίδων ο θαυματουργός, ενώ με την πολύτιμη συμβουλή του τότε διακόνου και μετέπειτα Πατριάρχου Αλεξανδρείας Μεγάλου Αθανασίου, συντάχθηκαν τα 6 πρώτα άρθρα του συμβόλου της Πίστεως. Ο σημερινός εορτασμός, μια Κυριακή πριν την Πεντηκοστή, θεσπίστηκε για να τονιστεί η θεότητα του προσώπου του Χριστού και η μεγάλη σημασία αυτής της αλήθειας για ολόκληρη την Εκκλησία. Όπως χαρακτηριστικά εξηγείται μέσα στο συναξάρι της εορτής «ο Κύριος μας Ιησούς Χριστός, αφού ενσαρκώθηκε, αφού φόρεσε την ανθρώπινη σάρκα και αφού εκπλήρωσε όλο το σωτηριώδες σχέδιο του τη πραγμάτωση της θείας οικονομίας-, ανελήφθη στους ουρανούς ως Θεός και ως άνθρωπος συγχρόνως, και κάθισε στα δεξιά της μεγαλοσύνης του Θεού και Πατρός. Αυτό ακριβώς διακήρυξαν οι Άγιοι Πατέρες και με τις θεολογικές αποφάσεις που πήραν σ αυτή την Σύνοδο «Πατρός και Υιού και Πνεύματος Αγίου, μίαν ουσίαν εδογμάτισαν και φύσιν», ότι δηλαδή ο σαρκωθείς Υιός και Λόγος του Θεού ήταν τέλειος Θεός και τέλειος άνθρωπος, ομοούσιος με τον Πατέρα, και αυτό εναντίον της αιρέσεως του Αρείου, ο οποίος δίδασκε ότι ο Χριστός δεν ήταν Θεός, δεν ήταν διπλούς στη φύση αλλά ήταν μόνο ως άνθρωπος. Απέρριπτε ουσιαστικά με άλλα λόγια την θεότητα του Χριστού. Η προσευχή του Χριστού υπέρ των μαθητών του και υπέρ των μελών της Εκκλησίας Η ευαγγελική περικοπή που διαβάζετε σήμερα, είναι ένα απόσπασμα από την αρχιερατική προσευχή του Κυρίου την οποία απήγγειλε, λίγο πριν αναχωρήσουν με τους μαθητές από το υπερώο όπου έλαβε χώρο ο Μυστικός Δείπνος. Ο Διδάσκαλος μετά την παράδοση του Μυστηρίου της Θείας Ευχαριστίας, συνομίλησε αρκετά με τους Μαθητές Του και η συνομιλία έληξε με μια προφητεία - μια ενθαρρυντική ρήση του Ιησού Χριστού «Eν τω κόσμω θλίψιν έξετε, αλλά θαρσείτε εγώ νενίκηκα τον κόσμον». (Ιω. ιστ 13). Η αρχιερατική αυτή προσευχή είναι μια συνομιλία του Υιού και Λόγου του Θεού μετά του ουρανίου Πατρός και χωρίζεται σε τρία μέρη. Το πρώτο μέρος αναφέρεται στο σκοπό της αποστολής του Ιησού Χριστού στον κόσμο. Το δεύτερο μέρος αναφέρεται στη βεβαίωση του Ιησού Χριστού για την εκπλήρωση του έργου του μέσα στον κόσμο και το τρίτο μέρος αναφέρεται στην καθιέρωση των Μαθητών ως συνεχιστών του έργου του Ιησού Χριστού. Είχε τρία αιτήματα: υπέρ Εαυτού, υπέρ των Αποστόλων και υπέρ της Εκκλησίας. Γιατί ο Ιησούς αφήνει τον παραμυθητικό και παραινετικό τόνο των υποθηκών προς τους Μαθητές και στρέφει το βλέμμα του προς τον Πατέρα και συνδιαλέγεται; Για να διδάξει και μας, κατά τον Άγιο Ιωάννη τον Χρυσόστομο, πως όταν βρισκόμαστε σε ώρες δοκιμασίας και πειρασμού να καταφεύγουμε στον ουράνιο Πατέρα μας για ν αντιμετωπίσουμε το μίσος και τους διωγμούς των ανθρώπων. Ο σκοπός της παρουσίας του Ιησού Χριστού στον κόσμο είναι η σωτηρία του ανθρωπίνου γένους: «ίνα παν ο δέδωκας αυτώ δώση αυτοίς ζωήν αιώνιον». Αυτή η αιώνια ζωή είναι η αποκάλυψη του Θεού στον κόσμο, η γνώση του αληθινού Θεού, αλλά και η πίστη στον Ιησού Χριστό ως Υιό του Θεού και απεσταλμένο του Πατρός για την σωτηρία του κόσμου: «Αύτη δε εστίν η αιώνιος ζωή, ίνα γινώσκωσί σε τον μόνον αληθινόν Θεόν και ον απέστειλας Ιησούν Χριστόν». «Εφανέρωσά σου το όνομα τοις ανθρώποις» Η γνώση και επίκληση του ονόματος του Θεού δεν είναι ένα εξωτερικό καθήκον ή μια θρησκευτική δοξασία. Είναι θεμελιώδης αλήθεια ύπαρξης και νοήματος ζωής που μας φανέρωσε ο Χριστός και πρέπει να εμπιστευόμαστε, επιζητώντας με πολλή ταπείνωση το έλεος του. Με τη συνεχή αυτή επίκληση μαστίζουμε τους εχθρούς μας τα παρακλάδια του διαβόλου δαίμονες, αγιαζόμαστε και σωζόμαστε. Ο λόγος του Χριστού επιμένει ν ανατρέπει τη λογική μας. Μας λέει ότι υψωνόμαστε κάθε φορά που θυσιαζόμαστε. Δοξαζόμαστε κάθε φορά που μαθαίνουμε να υπομένουμε πειρασμούς, συκοφαντίες, αδικίες. Καταξιωνόμαστε κάθε φορά που συγχωρούμε, κάθε φορά που

8 σταυρώνουμε τον εαυτό μας και τα πάθη του. Η «ενότητα», επιτακτικό ζητούμενο της εποχής μας Σε συνάφεια με την εορτή των Αγίων Πατέρων, ένας άλλος σκοπός που η Εκκλησία μας παραθέτει αυτή την περικοπή είναι και ο εξής: Η αίρεση του αρειανισμού διέσπασε το ενιαίο φρόνημα του λαού για το ανθρώπινο πρόσωπο του Χριστού, ενώ ο Κύριος ζήτησε στην Αρχιερατική Προσευχή «ίνα ώσιν εν», να είναι ένα (οι Μαθητές) και όσοι πίστευαν σε αυτόν. Το ζήτημα της ενότητας μεταξύ των ανθρώπων είναι από τα πλέον δύσκολα, αν αναλογιστούμε την παγκόσμια, αλλά και την προσωπική ιστορία του καθενός μας. Ιδιαίτερα στις μέρες μας, όπου η σύγχρονη βαβυλωνία της ατομοκεντρικότητας, της «πολυ-πολιτισμικότητας» και της «αλληλεγγύης» μεταξύ των λαών, σφυροκοπούν τα θεμέλια της κοινωνίας, διαβρώνοντας αντίστοιχα κάθε ευαισθησία προς τον πλησίον και κάθε δυνατότητα συμφωνίας στο πολιτισμικό και πνευματικό πεδίο για αντιμετώπιση των δυσκολιών που διέρχεται η πατρίδα μας. Το ότι η ενότητα προϋποθέτει την ταύτιση στα θέματα της πίστεως, το εκφράζει η Εκκλησία μας σε κάθε Θεία Λειτουργία, όταν λίγο πριν κοινωνήσουμε μας καλεί να ζητήσουμε από τον Χριστό «την ενότητα της πίστεως καί τήν κοινωνίαν του Αγίου Πνεύματος» και να εμπιστευτούμε σε Αυτόν «εαυτούς καί αλλήλους καί πάσαν τήν ζωήν ημών». Η κοινωνία με τον Τριαδικό Θεό, εξασφαλίζει την γνησιότητα της ανθρώπινης ενότητας. Η γνήσια ενότητα υπάρχει επίσης με τη θεωρία του Θεού: «και εγώ την δόξα ην δέδωκας μοι δέδωκα αυτοίς ίνα ώσιν εν θέλω όπου ειμί εγώ κακείνοι ώσι μετ εμού, ίνα θεωρώσι την δόξαν την εμήν» (Ιω. ιζ στ.22). Όλα αυτά δείχνουν ότι όταν οι άνθρωποι βιώνουν την δόξα της Αγίας Τριάδος στην ανθρώπινη φύση του Χριστού, όταν είναι συνδεδεμένοι με τον Χριστό, τότε είναι και μεταξύ τους ενωμένοι. Στην αρχιερατική προσευχή δεν γίνεται λόγος για μια εξωτερική ενότητα, που είναι αποτέλεσμα εξωτερικών προσπαθειών και γνωρισμάτων και που είναι προσδοκία του μέλλοντος, αλλά για ενότητα στο Σώμα του Χριστού, που δόθηκε την ημέρα της Πεντηκοστής και είναι πραγματικά παρούσα.
