Dennis Strouzas Grave Tone ~ 5th Morning Gospel October 6th, 2019 ~ The 3rd Sunday of Luke The Prayer Cycle of the Orthodox Church There is a rhythm and cycle of prayer that is meant to be alive in the life of an Orthodox Christian. Just like the human body has a cycle and rhythm to it of the heart beat, breath and so on, so there exists a similar state for the spiritual body. Throughout the next months, the bulletin will focus on the beat of prayer as it is presented to the church through her liturgical books. The names, themselves, of the liturgical books insinuate this rhythm. First, there is the Horologion. Horo means hour from the ancient Greek. In the Horologion are the prayers that are to be read during different hours of the day Second, there is the Paracleteke. This liturgical book expresses the rhythm of the week. For each week there is a musical tone that goes through a cycle of eight weeks. For each day of the week there are certain themes. Third is the Menaion (which is the word for month in Greek) For each day of the month there are feast days of saints of the Virgin Mary and of Jesus that are being commemorated. During the period of the Great Lent the church prays from a special book called the Triodion. From Easter to the week after Pentecost, the Church prays from a liturgical book called the Pentecostarion. Sixth, there is the psalter, this prayer books spreads out the reading of all one hundred and fifty psalms over the course of the week. Last, there is the Synaxarion, which describes the biography of each saint for each day. All these incredible liturgical books radiate the prayer rhythm and cycle of the church. As was stated, over the next period of weeks, this bulletin will take a closer look into each of these prayer books. Μια Συνοπτική εξήγηση το κύκλο της προσευχής Το Μέγα Ωρολόγιο. Περιλαμβάνει τις καθημερινές Ακολουθίες του νυχθημέρου, Εορτολόγιο, Συναξάριο, Απολυτίκια, Κοντάκια, Παρακλητικούς Κανόνες, Ακολουθία της Θείας Μεταλήψεως και λοιπά χρήσιμα στοιχεία. Είναι ένα βιβλίο για όλους τους Χριστιανούς -Ιερείς, Ψάλτες, Λαϊκούς. Τα Μηναία. Είναι δώδεκα βιβλία, ένα για κάθε μήνα του έτους, που περιέχουν τις Ακολουθίες των εορταζομένων κάθε ημέρα Αγίων. Περιλαμβάνουν το υμνολογικό υλικό του Εσπερινού και του Όρθρου, κάθε ημέρας. Η Παρακλητική. Το βιβλίο αυτό έχει Ακολουθίες πλήρεις στους οκτώ ήχους (γι' αυτό λέγεται και Οκτώηχος), που ψάλλονται κατά τον Εσπερινό και τον Όρθρο. Κάθε εβδομάδα καθορίζεται ο ήχος της εβδομάδας και σε κάθε ήχο υπάρχουν Ακολουθίες, για όλες τις ήμερες. Το Τριώδιο. Είναι το πρωτεύον βιβλίο της ομωνύμου περιόδου και ακολουθείται η τάξη που σε αυτό καθορίζεται. Περιλαμβάνει τις Ακολουθίες της περιόδου του Τριωδίου. Το Πεντηκοστάριο. Περιλαμβάνει τις Ακολουθίες της περιόδου από την Κυριακή του Πάσχα μέχρι και την Πεντηκοστή. Παλαιότερα ονομαζόταν «Χαρμόσυνο Τριώδιον» ή «Τριώδιον των Ρόδων». Το Ψαλτήριο. Περιλαμβάνει τους 150 ψαλμούς της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης, χωρισμένους σε Καθίσματα, με τρεις στάσεις το καθένα. Στις Ιερές Μονές κάθε εβδομάδα διαβάζεται ολόκληρο το Ψαλτήρι. Ο Συναξαριστής. Βιβλίο που περιέχει τους βίους των Αγίων κάθε ημέρας ολόκληρο το χρόνο.

The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:1-10 Brethren, working together with him, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise."
