Ἦχος δ Ἑωθινόν Δ February 22, 2015 Let us cast off works of darkness, for, as the Psalmist, David the King, wrote, They have all fallen away; they are all alike depraved; there is none that does good, no, not one. (Psalm 52:3) In like manner, the Apostle Paul wrote, But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of stress. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, fierce, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people. (2 Timothy 3:1-5) Who of us has never had a part in the aforementioned evils? Is this Apostolic prophecy not fulfilled in us? Woe therefore to us, for we know better and have thus come upon the extreme of evil! Are we not all gluttonous? Are we not all lovers of pleasure? Are we not all mad for, and lovers of, material things? Are we not all savages? Are we not all nurturers of wrath? Are we not all bearers of malice? Are we not all traitors of every virtue? Are we not all revilers? Are we not all fond of scoffing? Are we not all hasty and rash? Do we not all hurt and hate our brothers? Are we not all puffed up? Are we not all haughty? Are we not all proud? Are we not all vainglorious? Are we not all hypocrites? Are we not all deceitful? Are we not all jealous? Are we not all unruly? Are we not all listless? Are we not all fickle? Are we not all slothful? Are we not all neglectful of the Savior s commandments? Are we not all full of evil? Instead of God s temple have we not become the temple of idols? Instead of dwellings of the Holy Spirit are we not dwellings of evil spirits? It is all true; we are all sinners. We have great need to seek forgiveness from God and from our brother; and we also have great need to give forgiveness to our brother who, after all, is no better and no worse than we are! And let no one be upset at hearing these truths, for it was Jesus Christ Himself Who said, Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear My word. Bur Satan, the deceiver, using the serpent as his instrument, enticed me by food; he parted me from the glory of God, and gave me over to the earth and to the lowest depths of death. Therefore let us all make haste to accept the season of the Fast, and hearken to the teaching of the Gospel, that we may gain the mercy of Christ, and once more receive a dwelling-place in Paradise. 6 Adam sat before Paradise, and lamenting his nakedness, he wept, "Woe is me! By evil deceit I was persuaded and led astray, and now I am in exile from glory. Woe is me! In my simplicity I was stripped naked, and now I am in want. O Paradise, no more shall I take pleasure in your joy; no more shall I look upon the Lord my God and Maker, for I shall return to the earth from which I was taken. O merciful and compassionate One, I cry aloud to You: "I am fallen, have mercy upon me!" The First Theotokion of the Tone 6 Ἐκάθισεν Ἀδάµ, ἀπέναντι τοῦ Παραδείσου, καὶ τὴν ἰδίαν γύµνωσιν θρηνῶν ὠδύρετο. The prophet David who became a forefather in you, foretold in Psalms the great things that God would work through you, proclaiming that the queen would sit at His right. God has shown you to be a life-giving Mother by taking flesh from you without a father, that He might renew the icon of His likeness that had become corrupted with suffering; He found the sheep lost among the hills and carried it upon His shoulders to offer it to the Father, that it might be added by His will to the heavenly hosts, thereby saving the world; He, O Theotokos, is the Christ, Who brings rich and great mercy. Entrance O gladsome Light, and Prokeimenon of the day. Then, Let us say with all our soul, and with all our mind let us say, etc. Make us worthy, O Lord... 7 incorruption to the human race. For all these things we offer praise, glorifying Your lifegiving and saving resurrection. The Lord reigns; He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed, He is girded with strength. You shook the whole earth when You Who alone are mighty were fastened upon the tree; You raised up those laying in the tombs when You were laid in the grave, granting life and incorruption to the human race; wherefore we offer praise, glorifying Your third-day resurrection. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. The lawless people, O Christ, delivered You to Pilate who in turn condemned You to crucifixion, thus showing himself ungrateful before his Benefactor; but You were willingly buried and rose up on the third day by Your own power, for You are God granting us everlasting life and great mercy. Holiness befits Your house, O Lord, unto endless days. The women tearfully sought Your tomb, but not finding You they shouted and wailed, saying: Woe to us! How were You stolen, our Savior, the King of all? Where have they placed Your life-giving body? An Angel answered them, proclaiming: Do not weep, but go and preach that the Lord is risen granting us joy, for He alone is compassionate. O Christ, by means of Your Cross, You have set us free from the ancient curse; and by means of Your death, You have neutralized the devil who tyrannized our nature; and by Your rising, You filled all things with joy.
