1 Sunday of Forgiveness Cheesefare Sunday February 22, 2015 Sunday of Forgiveness (Sunday of Cheesefare) On which we call to mind the expulsion from Paradise of Adam, the firstcreated man. The commemoration of the finding of the relics of the Holy Martyrs of Eugenion. Our Venerable Fathers Thalassios and Baradatos. Ἦχος δ Ἑωθινόν Δ February 22, 2015 Let us cast off works of darkness, for, as the Psalmist, David the King, wrote, They have all fallen away; they are all alike depraved; there is none that does good, no, not one. (Psalm 52:3) In like manner, the Apostle Paul wrote, But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of stress. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, inhuman, implacable, slanderers, profligates, fierce, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding the form of religion but denying the power of it. Avoid such people. (2 Timothy 3:1-5) Who of us has never had a part in the aforementioned evils? Is this Apostolic prophecy not fulfilled in us? Woe therefore to us, for we know better and have thus come upon the extreme of evil! Are we not all gluttonous? Are we not all lovers of pleasure? Are we not all mad for, and lovers of, material things? Are we not all savages? Are we not all nurturers of wrath? Are we not all bearers of malice? Are we not all traitors of every virtue? Are we not all revilers? Are we not all fond of scoffing? Are we not all hasty and rash? Do we not all hurt and hate our brothers? Are we not all puffed up? Are we not all haughty? Are we not all proud? Are we not all vainglorious? Are we not all hypocrites? Are we not all deceitful? Are we not all jealous? Are we not all unruly? Are we not all listless? Are we not all fickle? Are we not all slothful? Are we not all neglectful of the Savior s commandments? Are we not all full of evil? Instead of God s temple have we not become the temple of idols? Instead of dwellings of the Holy Spirit are we not dwellings of evil spirits? It is all true; we are all sinners. We have great need to seek forgiveness from God and from our brother; and we also have great need to give forgiveness to our brother who, after all, is no better and no worse than we are! And let no one be upset at hearing these truths, for it was Jesus Christ Himself Who said, Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear My word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father s desires. (John 8:43-44) Saint Maximos the Confessor, On the Ascetic Life 1

O Theotokos, through you became manifest to us on earth the mystery, which was hid from eternity, and which the Angels themselves knew not: that God, uniting natures without confusion, becomes a man and accepts crucifixion for our salvation voluntarily; by virtue of this, resurrecting man whom He had first created, He saved our souls from death. 11 the myrrh-bearing women were trembling and said in astonishment: Has He been stolen, Who to the Robber opened up Paradise? Has He arisen, Who spoke of rising before even suffering? He is truly risen as Christ our God, granting those in Hades life and resurrection. Tone 4 Joseph was amazed Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. By Your voluntary will, O Savior, You endured the Cross, and by mortal men were You into a new tomb interred, Who by a word had created the entire world; wherefore being bound was the enemy Death plundered of his spoils catastrophically; and those in Hades all together cried aloud at Your life-bearing resurrection: The Christ is risen, the Lifebestower, and He abides forever. Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Joseph was amazed when he beheld your divine and supernatural conception without seed, O Theotokos: Your betrothed recalled the rain falling upon the fleece of wool, the bush burning without fire, and Aaron s rod which blossomed; he testified before the priests crying out : A Virgin gives birth, and after birth remains a virgin. After the Second Stichologia Resurrectional Tone 4 Quick to intercede O Savior, immortal as You are, from Hades You rose, by virtue of Your own resurrection raising Your world together, O Christ our God; mightily You have broken death s dominion, O Master; You as the Lord of mercy showed to all the resurrection. We therefore glorify You Who alone love mankind. Tone 4 Joseph was amazed Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. 12 From exalted heights above descended Gabriel and came, and he sat upon the rock wherein the Rock of life had lain; arrayed in white, he cried out to the weeping women: Cease now from your cries of lament; nonetheless, ever be possessed of a compassionate heart; take courage; He for Whom you are weeping and are seeking has truly arisen. And therefore, cry out to the Apostles, The Lord has resurrected. Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. O pure Maiden, all the hosts of holy Angels were amazed at the awesome mystery of your pregnancy and birth, how He Whose simple command holds all things together is held in your embrace as a mortal babe, the pre-eternal Word accepts an origin, and He is nursed Who nourishes the whole world in His ineffable kindness; and they extol you and glorify you who are truly God s Mother. α Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. The company of angels was amazed when it saw You among the dead being numbered, O Savior, Who destroyed the power of death and resurrected Adam together with Yourself, while from Hades liberating everyone. Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples? Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried unto the myrrh-bearing women, See for yourselves the tomb and understand; for the Savior has risen from the sepulcher. Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. Unto Your tomb, very early in the morning, did the myrrh-bearers hasten lamenting. But the angel appeared unto them and uttered, The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. But announce the Resurrection to the Apostles.
13 Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. The myrrh-bearing women, who had come with their spices to Your sepulcher, O Savior, heard the voice of an Angel speaking unto them, Why do you account among the dead the One Who lives? For as God, He has risen from the sepulcher. Triadikon Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. We worship the Father and together His Son and the Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity, one in essence, and we cry aloud together with the Seraphim: Holy, Holy, Holy are You, O Lord. Theotokion Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. O Virgin, you gave birth to the Giver of life; from sin you delivered Adam, while to Eve you have rendered joy in place of sorrow. He Who was from you made incarnate, God and man, has directed to life him who fell from it. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to You, O God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to You, O God. 14 From the years of my youth many passions combat me; but You, Who are my Savior, assist me and save me. You haters of Sion shall be put to shame by the Lord almighty, for as grass in the fire, you shall all be withered. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. By the Holy Spirit, every soul is made living, is exalted, and made shining through purification, by the Threefold Oneness, in a hidden manner. Kontakion from the Triodion Read (Tone Plagal 2) O Guide to wisdom, Provider of prudent counsel, Instructor of the foolish, and the Champion of the poor: strengthen and enlighten my heart, O Lord. Oikos from the Triodion Read (Tone Plagal 2) Banished from the joys of Paradise, Adam sat outside and wept; and beating his hands on his face he said, "I am fallen; O merciful One, have mercy upon me." 15 Προκείµενον Ἀνάστα Κύριε, βοήθησον ἡµῖν, καὶ λύτρωσαι ἡµᾶς, ἕνεκεν τῆς δόξης τοῦ ὀνόµατός σου. 16 When Adam saw the angel drive him out and shut the door of the divine garden, he groaned and said, "I am fallen; O merciful One, have mercy upon me." O Paradise, share the sorrow of your master who is brought to poverty, and with the sound of your leaves pray to the Creator that He might not keep the gate closed to me. I am fallen; O merciful One, have mercy upon me. O Paradise, perfect, all-holy and blessed, planted for Adam's sake and shut because of Eve, pray to God for the fallen. I am fallen; O merciful One, have mercy upon me. Psalm 50, then: Intercessory Troparia Tone Plagal 4 Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Open to me the doors of repentance, O Giver of life; for early in the morning my spirit seeks Your holy temple, bearing itself a bodily temple all defiled; in Your compassion cleanse it according to Your great mercy. Theotokion Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Guide me in the paths of salvation, O Theotokos; for I have defiled my soul with shameful sins, and have wasted all my life in slothfulness: by your intercessions, deliver me from all uncleanness. Tone Plagal 2 Merciful One, have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the multitude of Your compassions blot out my transgression. When I ponder in wretchedness the multitude of my misfortunes, I tremble for the fearful day of judgment; but trusting in Your merciful compassion, like David I cry to You: have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your mercy. Exaposteilarion from the Triodion Tone 3 O women listen In my wretchedness, O Lord, I have disobeyed Your commandments. Woe is me!
