1 I feel the need to speak to you about the Great Commission of Christ and the need to keep that at the center of everything we do as a Parish. Therefore, I will begin by reminding us of these questions: What is our purpose as a Parish? What is the ultimate GOAL of all these efforts that we have undertaken? Why are we making such great investments of Time, Talent and Treasure? The answer is: Because we have a great Commission from the Lord for us after His Resurrection Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded to you; and I am with you always, to the close of the age. Amen. (Matt. 28:19-20) The Parish is a Eucharistic Community, a sacred place of worship called to practice and proclaim the faith pure and undefiled by offering WORSHIP, SERVICE and MISSION. In other words, the ultimate goal of the Parish is to lead its members into the Kingdom of God. Worship, Service through philanthropy, and Mission through evangelization, are the three indispensable elements that must be at the very core of each Parish s life in order for it to continue growing. If we seek to grow, our Parish needs to invest both in effort and resources in all the areas of Worship, Service and Mission in order to reap results. Buildings, events and programs are not the goal of the parish. As your priest, I have been given the responsibility to care for you, to be the Head of the Parish, your Spiritual Father, to care for your souls, to help lead you to the Ultimate GOAL of salvation, to help you enter the Kingdom of God. I take this responsibility very seriously and feel the burden of it on my shoulders. I am responsible for the soul of each one of you and my desire is that you are saved. Therefore, I have tried hard to enrich our Worship by adding more Services, Vigils and Liturgies during the week and on Saturdays. This way there will be no one who can say that his or hers spiritual needs have not been met. The Orthodox Church in America (and our parish in particular) stand at a crossroads today, that we have not experienced before. A bleak realization is that there are no more immigrants coming from overseas to grow the parish. This puts more pressure on us to develop in ways, which will help us retain our members and also attract more faithful from the local community. Newcomers are mostly people who are choosing the Orthodox Faith on their own. They are the ones we call the converts. These people are discovering in the Orthodox Church the ancient, historic Christian Faith and Tradition. They are also the unchurched, those who for various reasons have distanced themselves from the Church. All these are also attracted through the Philanthropic Activities of a Parish, the Second Element. It is Christ Himself who said: if you do these things to the least of these my brethren you have done them to me (Matt. 25:40-45) (feed them, clothe them, take care of them). This injunction of the Lord applies on both the personal level as well as the parish level. We need to respond to Christ s call and get involved in the caring of those in need (the sick, the suffering, the poor, the elderly whom we have forgotten) in a more conscious and organized way. We need to allocate significant funds as a Parish to fulfill this call of the Lord and make a greater Philanthropic impact on the community around us. We take from the community through our Greek Festival. We need to return back to the community out of Love for Christ and for the people that are the least of His brethren. By promoting the parish and the Orthodox faith to those who are looking for authentic Christianity we shall fulfill the third Element, the Mission of the Church for the proclamation of the Gospel and the offering of salvation to those who seek it. For the next five years, I would like to see us consider seriously the allocation of significant resources to make the parish visible in the local community through an outreach program that will include reaching out to the un-churched Orthodox Christians, but also promoting the Orthodox Faith to those outside the Orthodox Church, as well as taking care of those in need. If we truly love God, people around us will recognize it. When we sit down to discuss about the individual tools of ministry however, we should always be mindful as to how each one of them will serve the Primary Mission of the parish and help lead us to the Kingdom of God. And if we consider putting the parish under financial burden, we should be prudent to make sure that this burden will not stifle the growth of the ministries, the outreach efforts and the growth in membership, because it is the growth in membership that will help us finance the future, construct facilities and develop programs. My desire is to protect the parish from anything that will turn us away from the Ultimate Goal. My duty is to protect it when I see anything that is dangerous to its unity and peace, or even to its fiscal stability and future growth. I see myself as the glue that holds the parish together. For the last three years, I have been serving you in this spirit and I intend to continue to serve you in the same way for a long time, as God gives me strength. 3 My Dearest Parishioners, A NOTE FROM OUR PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT Churches face many challenges in today s society. In a world full of challenges and temptations, spiritual development is a low priority for many individuals. Church Membership and Church attendance is declining. Young people tend to stray away from Christ and the Church and it is a great challenge to get them to church. In addition, aging parishioners face declining real income, which impacts their financial ability to support their church. Church operating and maintenance costs are growing faster than the revenues and there is a high cost associated with maintaining the Church s old infrastructure and buildings. Father and the Parish Council are trying to address these issues. Fr. Konstantinos is very active trying to help bring us closer to our Lord Jesus Christ. He has liturgy on most religious holidays, offers Saturday Liturgy in English and he has a monthly vigil and weekly paraklesis. He does his part. We need to do our part and try to come to church as often as we can to attend these services. With his help, our Parish is growing; this year for the second year we have more new members. We are getting closer to making the Soup kitchen a reality. We have installed a 3 bay sink in the lower hall, a basic requirement for a for soup kitchen license. A dishwasher has been bought and will be installed soon. We are working on the organizational plan and to secure food and supplies. We thank you Father for your leadership, spiritual guidance, love and hard work and Presbytera Anna for her great support and assistance. The Parish Council members with your help, support and understanding are working hard to develop additional revenues. We have increased the Greek School tuition to $500, increased membership dues and have significantly increased most of the hall rental rates to non members. The hall rental revenue is growing, thank you Teddy and Cookie for your great effort. In addition to the festival, we are also trying to establish and promote signature events, which have potential and contribute significantly financially: Gyro day, Bakaliaro luncheon and Palm Sunday Dinner. In 2013, the Festival for the first time has become the greatest source of revenue, surpassing even the parish dues collections. This may be true this year too. We had a fabulous, fantastic, outstanding festival like last year. We achieved record sales and profits despite the rain, helped by the newly introduced Ad Book initiated by Guy. Thank you, Guy. I would like to congratulate the chair persons, Andy Galbadis and Diane Karavitis for a great job. Thank you to the Philoptochos ladies, Stellios and Danny for preparing the food for the festival and all those who served in the food line. I would like to thank our chefs, Nikita, Jimmy, Peter M, who were cooking the tasty food for our festival for the entire three days and especially Stellios and Danny for preparing and cooking the whole week. Thank you, Tasi Sparages, for grilling perfectly and timely the meats for 3 whole days. The Philoptochos ladies did an excellent job preparing, baking, and serving the pastries. Thank you, ladies. Thank you, Katina and Zoe for making 17 trays of galactoboureko. I would like to thank all the members of the gyros team and especially Kostas Tomadakis for another outstanding performance this year. The bar also had another banner year. Thank you, Guy and all who helped in the bar. Loukoumades had another good year. Thank you all, and especially the Tivinis families who every year donate the ingredients for the loukoumades. Thank you, Aphrodite and all the members of the salad team. Our Goya kids did a great job with kid s activities. Thank you all. Thank you, Harry for taking great pictures during the festival. Thank you, Taso and Cookie, for handling all the money during the festival. Thank you to all who helped in the food line registers. Thank you Teddy, Niko, Nick and Nick for your help in the preparation, Kitchen and cooking. Thank you, Paul for helping with the supplies and cooking. Thank you, Petro for your help with banners and food preparation and supplies. I apologize if I have missed to thank anybody. Finally, I would like to express our gratitude and great appreciation to all donors and supporters of our festival. They are a big part of our success. Celebrating our Church s centennial in 2016 and honoring our heritage, our community paid tribute to Oresti T. Demetriades on Saturday, November 15 th. He is a well known and very significant news broadcaster personality, who has served the Greek Community through his radio programs since The event was fabulous, well organized, and financially very successful. The food was excellent. The honoree and every guest had an amazing time. (Pictures in later pages). Our gratitude and congratulations goes out to chairperson Bill Galatis for an amazing job. We need to continue working together as a family, as a community, with love and faith to further develop our beloved community. 4 ΚΑΙ ΣΤΑ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ... Πολυαγαπημενοι ενορίτες μου, Οι Εκκλησίες αντιμετωπίζουν πολλές προκλήσεις στη σημερινή κοινωνία. Σε έναν κόσμο γεμάτο προκλήσεις και πειρασμούς η πνευματική ανάπτυξη αποτελεί χαμηλή προτεραιότητα για πολλά άτομα. Ο αριθμός των ενωριτών και η συμμετοχή τους στην Εκκλησία μειώνεται. Οι νέοι τείνουν να μενουν μακριά από τον Χριστό και την Εκκλησία και είναι μια μεγάλη πρόκληση για να τους φέρεις στον δρόμο του Κυρίου. Επιπλέον, οι γηράζοντες ενορίτες αντιμετωπίζουν μείωση του πραγματικού εισοδήματος που έχει αντίκτυπο στην οικονομική ικανότητά τους να υποστηρίξουν την εκκλησία τους. Τα έξοδα λειτουργίας και συντήρησης της Εκκλησίας αυξάνονται ταχύτερα από ό, τι τα έσοδα και υπάρχει ένα υψηλό κόστος που συνδέεται με τη διατήρηση παλαιών υποδομών και κτιρίων της Εκκλησίας. Ο Ιερέας μας και το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο προσπαθούν να αντιμετωπίσουν αυτά τα ζητήματα. Ο Πατέρας Κωνσταντίνος είναι πολύ δραστήριος προσπαθώντας να βοηθήσει για να μας φέρει πιο κοντά στον Κύριο μας Ιησού Χριστό. Έχει λειτουργία στις περισσότερες θρησκευτικές γιορτές, προσφέρει το Σάββατο Λειτουργία στα αγγλικά, και έχει μια μηνιαία αγρυπνία και εβδομαδιαίες παρακλήσεις. Κάνει τη δουλειά του πολυ καλα. Πρέπει να κάνουμε και εμείς τις υποχρεώσεις μας. Πρέπει να συμμετάσχουμε σε αυτές τις Λειτουργίες και να προσπαθούμε να ερχόμαστε στην εκκλησία όσο πιο συχνά μπορούμε. Με τη βοήθειά του, η Ενορία μας αυξάνεται. Φέτος για δεύτερη χρονιά έχουμε περισσότερα νέα μέλη. Είμαστε όλο και πιο κοντά για να ξεκινήσουμε το προγγραμα συσσίτιου απορών. Έχουμε εγκαταστήσει ένα νεροχύτη με 3 χωρίσματα στην κάτω κουζίνα, μια βασική προϋπόθεση για την άδεια για το προγγραμα συσσιτίου. Ένα πλυντήριο πιάτων έχει αγοραστεί και θα εγκατασταθεί σύντομα. Εργαζόμαστε για το οργανόγραμμα και για να εξασφαλίσουμε τρόφιμα και προμήθειες. Σας ευχαριστούμε Πατέρα Κωνσταντίνε για την ηγεσία σας, πνευματική καθοδήγηση, την αγάπη και τη σκληρή δουλειά και πρεσβυτέρα Άννα για τη μεγάλη σας υποστήριξη και βοήθεια. Τα μέλη του Ενοριακού Συμβουλίου με τη βοήθειά σας, την υποστήριξη και την κατανόηση σας εργάζονται σκληρά για να αναπτύξουν περισσότερο έσοδα. Αυξήσαμε τα δίδακτρα του Ελληνικού Σχολείου σε $ 500 κάτα μαθητή, αυξήσαμε τις συνδρομές των μελών και επίσης σημαντικά έχουν αυξηθεί οι τιμές ενοικίασης της ανω αίθουσας για τα μη μέλη. Τα μισθωτικά έσοδα εχουν αυξηθει πολυ. Σας ευχαριστώ Teddy και Cookie για τη μεγάλη προσπάθεια σας. Εκτός από το φεστιβάλ, προσπαθούμε επίσης να καθιερώσουμε και να προωθήσουμε μοναδικες εκδηλώσεις που είναι δυνητικές και συμβάλλουν σημαντικά οικονομικά, οπώς η ημέρα του Γύρου, το γεύμα Μπακαλιάρου και της Κυριακής των Βαΐων. Το 2013, το Φεστιβάλ για πρώτη φορά έχει γίνει η μεγαλύτερη πηγή εσόδων, ξεπερνώντας ακόμα και τις συλλογές τελών της ενορίας. Αυτό μπορεί να ισχύει και φέτος. Εχουμε επαναλάβει το υπέροχο, καταπληκτικό, εξαιρετικό φεστιβάλ που είχαμε πέρυσι. Πετύχαμε ρεκόρ πωλήσεων και κερδών, παρά τη βροχή, βοηθημένοι από το νεοεισαχθέντα βιβλίο διαφημήσεων που ξεκίνησε ο Guy. Σε ευχαριστώ, Guy. Θα ήθελα να συγχαρώ τους υπέυθυνους του φέστιβαλ, Ανδρεα Γαλβάδη και Δήμητρα Καραβίτη για μια εξαιρετική δουλειά. Ευχαριστώ τις κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου, τον Στέλιο και τον Διονύση για την προετοιμασία των τροφίμων για το φεστιβάλ και όλους εκείνους που υπηρέτησαν στο σερβιρισμα των φαγητών. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω τους μαγείρους μας, Νικήτα, Δημήτρη, Παναγιώτη Μ. οι οποίοι μαγείρεψαν τα νόστιμα φαγητα για το φεστιβάλ μας για τρεις ημέρες και ειδικά τον Στέλιο και τον Διονύση για την προετοιμασία και το μαγείρεμα, όλη την εβδομάδα. Σε ευχαριστώ, Τάση, για το τέλειο και έγκαιρο ψήσιμο κρεάτων στη σχάρα για 3 ολόκληρες ημέρες. Οι κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου έκαναν μια εξαιρετική δουλειά στην προετοιμασία, το ψήσιμο, και σερβιρισμα γλυκών. Σας ευχαριστώ, κυρίες. Ευχαριστω, την Κατίνα και την Ζωή για το ψήσιμο 17 ταψιά γαλακτομπούρεκου. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω όλα τα μέλη της ομάδας του γυρου και ειδικά τον Κώστα μια ακόμα εξαιρετική απόδοση. Το μπαρ επίσης είχε άλλο ένα μεγάλο ρεκόρ εσώδων. Ευχαριστώ, τον Guy και όλους όσους βοήθησαν στο μπαρ. Οι λουκουμάδες είχαν άλλη μια καλή χρονιά. Σας ευχαριστώ όλους, και ειδικά τίς οικογένειες Tιβηνή που κάθε χρόνο δωρίσουν τα υλικά για τους λουκουμάδες. Σας ευχαριστώ, Αφροδίτη και όλα τα μέλη της ομάδας σαλάτα. Τα παιδιά του GOYA έκαναν σπουδαία δουλειά με τις δραστηριότητες για τα παιδιά. Σας ευχαριστώ όλους. Ευχαριστώ τον Τάσο και την Cookie, για το χειρισμό των χρήματα κατά τη διάρκεια του φεστιβάλ.ευχαριστώ όλους που βοηθησαν στα ταμεία της γραμμής τροφίμων. Ευχαριστώ τον Θόδωρο, τον Νίκο Σ, τον Νικο Β, και τον Nick Σ, για τη βοήθειά σας στην προετοιμασία, κουζίνα και το σερβιρισμα. Σε ευχαριστώ, Παναγιώτη Λ, για την βοηθεια με τις προμήθειες και το μαγείρεμα. Ευχαριστώ, Πέτρο για τη βοήθειά σου με τα πανό, την παρασκευή τροφίμων και προμηθειών. Ζητώ συγγνώμη αν έχω ξεχάσει να ευχαριστήσω κανένα. Γιορτάζοντας την εκατονταετηρίδα της Εκκλησίας μας το 2016 και τιμώντας την κληρονομιά μας, η κοινότητα μας τίμησε τον Ορέστη Τ Δημητριάδη το Σάββατο 15 Νοέμβρη. Αυτός είναι μία πολύ γνωστή και σημαντική προσωπικότητα της ραδιοφωνιας που έχει υπηρετήσει την Ελληνική Κοινότητα μέσω των ραδιοφωνικών προγραμμάτων του από το Η εκδήλωση ήταν υπέροχη, καλά οργανωμένη, και οικονομικά πολύ επιτυχημένη. Το φαγητό ήταν εξαιρετικό. Το τιμώμενο πρόσωπο και κάθε επισκέπτης είχε μια καταπληκτική βραδιά. (Εικόνες σε μεταγενέστερες σελίδες). Οι Ευχαριστίες και τα συγχαρητήριά μας πηγαίνουν στόν υπεύθυνο της γιορτής Μπιλ Γαλάτη για μια καταπληκτική δουλειά. Πρέπει να συνεχίσουμε να εργαζόμαστε μαζί ως οικογένεια, ως κοινότητα, με την αγάπη και την πίστη για την περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη της αγαπημένης μας κοινότητα. Θυμήσου πώς έγινα σάρκα διά σένα. Θυμήσου πώς γεννήθηκα διά σένα άπό τήν Παρθένον. Θυμήσου πώς έγινα διά σένα βρέφος. Θυμήσου πώς ταπεινώθηκα διά σένα. Θυμήσου πώς εφτώχυνα διά σένα. Θυμήσου πώς έζησα διά σένα έπί τής γής. Θυμήσου πώς ύπέμεινα διά σένα διωγμούς. Θυμήσου πώς άποδέχτηκα διά σένα τις κακολογίες, τις ύβρεις, τις άτιμώσεις, τις πληγές, τούς έμπτυσμούς, τούς κολαφισμούς, τις κοροϊδίες καί τις καταδίκες. Θυμήσου πώς διά σένα μετά άνόμων έλογίσθην. Θυμήσου πώς διά σένα έλαβα τόν άτιμωτικόν θάνατον. Θυμήσου πώς διά σένα ένταφιάστηκα. Κατέβηκα άπό τούς ούρανούς διά νά σέ άνεβάσω στούς ούρανούς. Ταπεινώθηκα διά νά σέ ύψώσω. Έπτώχευσα διά νά σέ πλουτίσω. Άτιμάστηκα διά νά σέ δοξάσω. Πληγώθηκα διά νά σέ ζωντανέψω. Έσύ έκαμες τήν άμαρτίαν καί Έγώ πήρα αύτήν τήν άμαρτίαν έπάνω μου. Έσύ φταίς καί Έγώ έκτελέστηκα. Έσύ είσαι όφειλέτης καί Έγώ έπλήρωσα τό χρέος. Έσύ καταδικάστηκες σέ θάνατον καί Έγώ πέθανα διά νά σού δώσω ζωήν. Μέ προσέλκυσε νά τό κάνω ή άγάπη μου καί ή εύσπλαγχία μου. Δέν μπόρεσα νά άντέξω νά ύποφέρης εύρισκόμενος σέ τόσην δυστυχίαν. Καί έσύ περιφρονείς αύτήν τήν άγάπην μου. Άντί άγάπης μού άνταποδίδεις τό μίσος. Άντί Έμένα άγαπάς τήν άμαρτίαν. Άντί νά μέ ύπηρετής λειτουργείς τά πάθη σου. Άλλά τί βρήκες σέ Μένα πού θά έπρεπε νά άποφύγης; Διατί δέν θέλεις νά έλθης σ Μένα; Άναζητάς καλό διά τόν έαυτόν σου; Κάθε καλό τό έχω Έγώ. Άναζητάς τήν μακαριότητα; Κάθε μακαριότητα τήν έχω Έγώ. Άναζητάς τήν όμορφιά; Τί ύπάρχει πιό όμορφο άπό Μένα; Άναζητάς τήν εύγένειαν; Ποιός είναι πιό εύγενής άπό τόν Ύιόν τού Θεού και τήν Παρθένον; Άναζητάς αύτό πού είναι ύψηλόν; Τί είναι πιό ύψηλό άπό τό Βασίλειον τών Ούρανών; Άναζητάς τήν δόξαν; Ποιός είναι πιό ένδοξος άπό Μένα; Άναζητάς τόν πλούτον; Όλα τά πλούτη βρίσκονται σέ Μένα. Άναζητάς τήν σοφίαν; Έγώ είμαι ή Σοφία τού Θεού. Άναζητάς τήν φιλίαν; Ποιός είναι φιλικότερος άπό Μένα πού έδωσα τήν ψυχήν μου διά όλους σας; Άναζητάς τήν βοήθειαν; Ποιός μπορεί νά σέ βοηθήση έκτός άπό Μένα; Aναζητάς τόν ίατρόν; Ποιός μπορεί νά σέ θεραπεύση έκτός άπό Μένα; Άναζητάς τήν άγαλλίασιν; Ποιός θά σού τήν δώση έκτός άπό Μένα; Άναζητάς τήν παρηγοριάν μέσα στις θλίψεις σου; Ποιός θά σέ παρηγορήση έκτός άπό Μένα; Άναζητάς τήν ήσυχίαν; Σ έμένα θά βρής τήν ήσυχίαν διά τήν ψυχήν σου. Άναζητάς τήν είρήνην; Έγώ είμαι ή είρήνη τής ψυχής. Άναζητάς τήν ζωήν; Έγώ έχω πηγήν ζωής. Άναζητάς τό φώς; Έγώ είμαι τό Φώς τού κόσμου. Άναζητάς τήν άλήθειαν; Έγώ είμαι ή Άλήθεια. Άναζητάς τήν όδόν; Έγώ είμαι ή όδός. Άναζητάς τόν όδηγόν στόν Ούρανόν; Έγώ είμαι ό πιστός όδηγός. Why have you joined forces with my enemy? Remember that I descended from Heaven for your sake. Remember that I became incarnate for your sake. Remember that I was born of the Virgin Mary for your sake. Remember that I became a baby for your sake. Remember that I humbled myself for your sake. Remember that I became poor for your sake. Remember that I dwelt upon the earth for your sake. Remember that I was persecuted for your sake. Remember that I suffered verbal abuse and was disgraced. I was wounded, I was spit upon, I was slapped, I was ridiculed and I was unjustly accused just for you. Remember that for you I was numbered among the unjust. Remember it was for you that I suffered a disgraceful death. Remember it was for you that I was buried. I came down from the heavens in order to make it possible for you to be lifted up to the heavens. I became humble in order to raise you up. I became poor so that I could make you rich. I was disgraced in order to make you honorable. I was wounded in order to bring you back to life. You sinned and I took your sins upon myself. You are guilty of sin and I was crucified. You are the debtor and I paid the price. You were condemned to death and I died for you. I was called to do these things out of my love and compassion for you. I could not endure to see you suffering and living in despair. And you have scorned my love. Instead of loving Me, you repaid Me with your hatred. Instead of loving Me, you loved sin. Instead of serving Me, you indulged serving your own passions. But what was it about Me that made you avoid me? Why is it that you do not want to come to Me? Do you pursue that which is good for you? Whatever is good in life I possess. Do you seek a blessed life, I offer it to you. Do you seek that which is beautiful? What is more beautiful than Me? Do you seek kindness? Who is more compassionate than the Son of God and the Virgin Mary? Do you seek that which is the most blessed thing in life? What is more blessed than the Kingdom of Heaven? Do you desire glory in life? Who is more glorious than Me in the world? Do you seek after riches? All the most profound riches in life are found in Me. Do you seek to acquire wisdom? I am the Wisdom of God. Do you seek a faithful friend in life? Who could possibly be friendlier than Me who gave His life for the sake of all of you? Are you looking for help in life? Who else in the world can help you like I can? Υou seek healing from a doctor? Who else can heal you like I can? Are you looking for joy in life? Who else can give you the joy the way I can? Do you seek to find comfort in your pain? Who else will comfort you the way I can? Do you seek after tranquility? You will find tranquility for your soul in me. Do you seek a sense of peace in your life? I am the peace that you seek for your soul. Do you seek after abundant life? I am the source of life. Do you seek after light that will light up your world? I am the Light of the world. Do you seek after truth? I am the truth. Do you seek to find the true path in life? I am the true path of life. Are you seeking a guide to lead you to heaven? I am the true guide. Why then do you not want to come to Me? Are you afraid to approach Me? Truly who else is more approachable than Me in life? Are you afraid to call upon Me for my help? In truth, when did I ever deny you anything when you asked for something in faith? Could it be that your sins are hindering you? Remember that I have died for the sins of the world. 8 Koinotis Recipe Corner CAULIFLOWER ARUGULA SALAD 1 Head Cauliflower cut into florets 4 bunches baby arugula 2 tablespoons lemon juice (about 2 lemons) 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup golden raisins ¼ cup pine nuts toasted 1/8 tsp crushed red chili pepper flakes Shaved Parmesan Cheese (can be served without parmesan during lent) Salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste Instructions: Preheat Oven to 400 degrees F. Toss cauliflower with olive oil salt and pepper. Place onto a large baking sheet and roast in oven for 30minutes or until golden brown and tender. Remove from oven and allow to cool to room temperature. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, olive oil, and crushed red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper (dressing). In a large bowl toss together arugula with the dressing, toasted pine nuts and golden raisins. Add cauliflower florets and top off with shaved parmesan. ΣΥΝΤΑΓΗ ΣΑΛΑΤΑ ΚΟΥΝΟΥΠΙΔΙ ΜΕ ΡΟΚΑ 4 χούφτες ρόκα 1 κεφάλι κουνουπίδι πλυμμένο και κομμένο σε τούφες 2 κουτ. σούπας χυμός λεμονιού 4 κουτ. σούπας λάδι ¼ φλυτζ. σταφίδες άσπρες ¼ φλυτζ. κουκουνάρια καβουρδισμένα 1/8 κουτ. red pepper flakes (μπούκοβα) Αλάτι και πιπέρι Ξέσματα παρμεζάνας (προαιρετικό) Αλοίφω το κουνουπίδι με λάδι, αλάτι και πιπέρι και το ψήνω σε λαδωμένο ταψί γιά 30 περίπου ή μέχρι να ροδήσει. Αναμειγνύω λάδι, λεμόνι, αλάτι και red pepper flakes και τα ανακατεύω με τη ρόκα. Ρίχνω τα κουκουνάρια και τις σταφίδες και σερβίρω μαζί με το ψημένο κουνουπίδι. Αν δεν βάλω ξέσματα παρμεζάνας είναι νηστήσιμο και δένει ωραία με ψητές γαρίδες.

13 A BLESSED HOLIDAY & LOVING SEASON TO ALL! As we enter the holiday season, we reflect and we honor the legacy of our immediate families, our Church families, and our friends, all the people we are thankful for who make our lives richer in value. This was the premise behind the 100 th Anniversary Committee s Tribute to Orestes Demetriades an evening for Somerville parishioners and friends to say thank you for decades of broadcasting our ethnic heritage was held on Saturday, November 15. Soon after Christmas, on January 31, we are hosting an evening with Greek artist Katerina Delegas. Learn how to draw and bring home your own finished painting at the end of the night. See flyer included. So much has been accomplished these first two years 2013 and Meetings are held at least once a month, our mission statement has been completed, a Treasurer was appointed, the theme Honoring Our Legacy established, Logo decided, 2 Plant Sales held, the Axion Estin weekend hosted, the Tribute to Orestes Demetriades event realized, a photographer has stepped forward to record our history, a collection of parishioner s wedding pictures for an album is in place, and much work and research for the 100 th Anniversary Album has begun. As the year 2014 comes to a close the last planned event for 2016 will be finalized. ALL of our goals have been met. So what do we need? You. Για τα 100 χρόνια, έχαμε μία βραδυά, 15 Νοεμβρίου, που τιμήσαμε τον Ορέστη Δημητριάδη, που για δεκαετίες μας ενημέρωνε και μας ψυχαγωγούσε μέσω του ραδιοφώνου. Μετά τα Χριστούγεννα, στις 31 Ιανουαρίου, θα έχουμε μία βραδυά με την καλλιτέχνιδα Κατερίνα Δελέγκας. Θα μάθετε να ζωγραφίζετε, και, στο τέλος της βραδιάς, θα έχετε τον πίνακά σας. Πολλά έγιναν τα 2 έτη 2013 και Συμβούλια κάθε μήνα, ανάδειξη ταμία, δύο φορές πώληση φυτών, υποδοχή του «Άξιον Εστί», η τιμητική του Ορέστη Δημητριάδη, φωτογραφίες γάμου με το άλμπουμ... 15 GREEK SCHOOL SUNDAY SCHOOL After our OXI Day celebration all of the students are getting ready for our Christmas program! In the mean time, the lessons of traditional Greek dances and the children s choir are a huge hit with the students. They cannot wait for it to be time to have the dance lessons and to practice singing. By adding the dance lessons and the children s choir to our curriculum this year, was the best decision we made. As our school is steadily growing, we must look to its future. The number of students must also grow with the school, and that falls solely on us. Who ever loves this church, must also talk lovingly about the school to others. These students are the future of this church let s not forget that. Όλοι απολαύσαμε ένα «barbeque» για την υποδοχή της πρώτης μέρας. Ήταν ευκαιρία για τα παιδιά να δούν τους φίλους τους και οι γονείς τους δασκάλους. Το σχολείο αναβαθμίζεται. Ανεβαίνει. Πρέπει όμως, και ο αριθμός μαθητών να ανεβεί. Κι αυτό, εξαρτάται από όλους μας. Όποιος αγαπά την ενορία, πρέπει να μιλά με ενθουσιασμό για το σχολείο. Αυτό είναι το «αύριο» της κοινότητας. 16 The PTO welcomed all new families to our Parish in September during our cookout for all new and returning students. All the families enjoyed a tasty BBQ lunch which was prepared by Jason Schrieber, John Stefanou and Michael Ververis. Fortunately we continue to grow each year which is a testament to all the love and good deeds we are performing as a parish. The future is getting brighter. The PTO Committee would like to recognize Father Konstantinos, Vangelis Kechris Parish Council President, Mr. Stelios Sfikas, Diane Karavitis, Mr. & Mrs. Stefanou, Mr. & Mrs. Ververis and Mrs. Ann Moulakis and her husband James for their tremendous assistance in organizing, preparing, and volunteering during the entire weekend of October 25 & for the 74th OXI Day Celebration. We commend the Greek school director and teachers who prepared our Greek School children so well for the spectacularly arranged OXI Day program. We also wish to recognize and thank all of the parents who assisted and/or made a donation towards the OXI Day Celebration Lunch and to the PTO Committee. Last but not least, we wish to congratulate the young Greek School superstars, the future of our parish, for their wonderful performances on Sunday, October 26, The children recited their lovely poems and songs in Greek. The students entertained the audience by dancing several Greek dances on stage. We wish them continued success and progress throughout the school year. On November 29, 2014 at 10 a.m. there will be a Church wide Trim A Tree and decorations with all Church Ministries (Joy, Hope & GOYA). Lunch will be provided for all the families who assist, compliments of the PTO Committee, as the children watch Disney s Frozen. On December 6, 2014 we are planning a tentative Christmas Fieldtrip for our families and parishioners. Details will follow so lookout for them soon so you don t miss out. On December 13, 2014 at 10 a.m. our children will travel throughout Somerville to sing their annual Christmas Carols. This year upon advance request our children will travel to a few of our Parishioners homes in Somerville and Medford to sing. If you wish our children s choir to come to your home for a short Christmas performance in Greek and English then please contact Michael Ververis at on or before December 1, Donations will be gladly accepted to help us defray the cost associated with the Christmas carols. On December 14, 2014, the Greek School Christmas Program will take place in the upper hall. Afterwards there will be a special visit from the North Pole for our children. Kindly join us. On December 24, 2014 the PTO will organize our annual Christmas Pageant. Our Sunday and Greek School students will perform for us after the Church service. Parents are requested to bring their children each Sunday in December after the Liturgy so the children can practice for the Pageant. Practice makes perfect. Lastly, on December 28, 2014 the PTO will host its annual Holiday breakfast in the upper hall. We hope that you will continue to attend and support these events which have been planned for all of our Dormition families. The PTO Committee seeks additional volunteers to execute and assist with these events which are planned for our children s enjoyment. If you are interested in helping with one of the events mentioned above then please contact any committee member at least one week prior to the particular event(s). The more help the merrier. OXI DAY Celebration Sunday, October 26, 2014 Meaning Behind OXI DAY October 28th 1940: Greece rejects Mussolini s ultimatum On this day in 1940 during World War Two, the Greek government rejected Italian dictator Benito Mussolini s demand that the Greeks allow the Italian army to enter and occupy the country. At 3 a.m. the Italian ambassador to Greece, Emanuele Grazzi, delivered Mussolini s ultimatum to Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas. The Prime Minister replied with"alors, c est la guerre" ( Then, it is war ). The people of Greece celebrated Metaxas s defiant Oxi (Greek for no ) and resisted when the Italian army crossed the Greek border. The Greeks fought valiantly in the subsequent Greco Italian War, successfully pushing the Italian army back into Albania. Greece ultimately fell to the Axis powers, with Nazi Germany assisting Italy in Greece and eventually occupying the country. It has been suggested that had Greece surrendered, the Nazis would have made greater strides across Europe and thus Mataxas s No prevented the war from lasting longer. By having to detour through Greece, Hitler s Germany lost valuable time in the spring and had to delay the invasion of Russia until the winter, a decision that proved disastrous for the Axis war effort. This day is celebrated in Greece as No Day, and is marked with military parades and displays of patriotism.

20 As we enter the final months of the year, November and December, we look forward to the upcoming holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas respectively. This is such a festive time of year. First we give thanks and then we celebrate Christ birth. We are all familiar with the usual seasonal music at this time of year, hymns of Thanksgiving, hymns of preparation for Christmas and then the Christmas hymns themselves. Music began in the Church. This means we sing some of the oldest music in the world during our Liturgy. Throughout every period of music, musicians have composed great symphonic and choral works for this period of time, especially Christmas. We have early music from the Renaissance period (14 th to 17 th centuries), then the Baroque period (17 th and 18 th centuries), on to the Classical era (from about ), then comes the Romantic period (from around ), and ultimately to the current time we live in. So from the Renaissance period to the current is over 700 years of music! And each musical era has its own particular identity in manner of composition and performance practices. Add to that the music that started in the Church and we can go all the way back to sometime before the year 100. So there is basically a truckload of music written to celebrate the upcoming season, both liturgical and secular. Some of the most famous and most performed music at this time of year comes from Johann Sebastian Bach (German Baroque), who is known for composing a Cantata (composition usually for a choir with instrumental accompaniment) for every Sunday of the year. This isn t necessarily because he wanted to become famous but more so out of necessity for his choir. They just needed something to sing each week. Can you imagine if I had to do that every week for our own choir? (faint) Bach wrote some beautiful things for Christmas which have been performed regularly throughout history. Another famous Baroque composer who celebrated this period of time is George Frideric Handel. Handel was born in Germany but ended up a British citizen. He is most famous for composing The Messiah, an oratorio in three parts for choir, soloists and orchestra. An oratorio is an opera like composition that can be staged but is usually done as a concert. The text is always liturgical, usually from the Bible. The most performed part of The Messiah is the first part, which deals with coming of Christ and then the birth of Christ. The famous Hallelujah chorus is probably the best known chorus from The Messiah. Although written for the end of the second part which deals with death, resurrection and ascension, it is very often tacked onto the end of the first part after Christ s birth. On a more contemporary note, Camille Saint Saëns, French composer from the Romantic period and also a church organist, wrote a beautiful Christmas Cantata. Romantic era music is very emotional and flowing. Contemporary composer, Daniel Pinkham, who was born in Lynn, MA, also wrote a Christmas Cantata, quite beautiful with quite a contemporary sound. Pinkham taught at Boston Conservatory and NEC, and was the music director at the famed King s Chapel in Boston. And not in the least, one of my favorite musicians, John Rutter from England who is still very much alive, keeps composing new music for church and arranging many old Christmas hymns with a new flavor. For anyone who watched and remembers Prince William s and Duchess Kate s wedding, a number of John Rutter works were performed by the choir. So there is a lot to look forward to in the next two months. This time of year is more than well represented in the musical world, both liturgical and A NOTE FROM CHOIR Α Liturgical Music Ministry of our Parish secular. Come to Church to hear our beautiful seasonal hymns, listen to classical radio to hear many of the cantatas and oratorios I mentioned, and even buy a ticket to hear Boston s Handel and Haydn Society expertly perform many of the early works at Symphony Hall. On December 21 after Liturgy, you get to hear the Dormition Choir sing a Christmas Concert. You ll want to be in Church for that and that s free! And as usual, if anyone would like to discuss music and singing and choirs, etc., feel free to find me at coffee hour after the Divine Liturgy. Music is my favorite subject! Evelyn Sophia Czaja Choir Director Χορωδία Βαδίζοντας στους δύο τελευταίους μήνες του έτους, ετοιμαζόμαστε για τις γιορτές των Ευχαριστιών και των Χριστουγέννων. Όλοι γνωρίζουμε τους ύμνους της προετοιμασίας των Χριστουγέννων. Όλοι ψάλλουμε, ακούγοντας την ανάλογη μουσική, οι συμφωνικές ετοιμάζονται με τους διευθυντές τους. Έχουμε την μουσική αναγέννησης 14 ου και 17 ου αιώνα, και μετά μπαρόκ, (17 ος και 18 ος αιών). Ακολουθεί η κλασική εποχή ( ), και μετά η ρομαντική εποχή ( ) και ακολουθεί η σύγχρονη εποχή, ως τις μέρες μας. 700 χρόνια μουσική! Αν προσθέσουμε και τη μουσική που άρχισε στην εκκλησία, πάμε πίσω, σχεδόν στο έτος 100. Μερικά ιδιαίτερα αναγνωρισμένα κομμάτια είναι του Γιόχαν Σεμπάστιαν Μπάχ, όπως η «Καντάτα» για κάθε Κυριακή. Για τίς ανάγκες της χορωδίας. Κάτι όμορφο, να τραγουδιέται τις Κυριακές. Σκεφτείτε να έπρεπε να το κάνω εγώ, αυτό... Ο Μπάχ, έγραψε υπέροχα κομμάτια για τα Χριστούγεννα. Ένας άλλος μουσικός είναι ο Φρεντερίκ Χάντελ. Γεννήθηκε στη Γερμανία, αλλά υπήρξε Άγγλος πολίτης. Διηύθυνε το «Μεσσίας» ένα ορατόριο σε τρία μέρη για χορωδία και ορχήστρα. Ορατόριο είναι κάτι μεταξύ όπερας και κονσέρτου. Στο α μέρος, αναφέρεται ο Ερχομός του Χριστού, η Γέννηση. Το φημισένο «Αλληλούϊα» είναι απ το ορατόριο «Μεσσίας». Στο τέλος του β μέρους αναφέρεται ο θάνατος και η Ανάσταση. Με πιο μοντέρνα μουσική, ο Καμίλ Σαν Σαΐν, Γάλλος ενορχηστρωτής της Ρομαντικής εποχής, και πιανίστας στην εκκλησία, έγραψε ωραίες Χριστουγεννιάτικες ωδές, με πολύ συναίσθημα. Επίσης, ο Ντάνιελ Πίνκχαμ, γεννημένος στο Lynn, MA, έγραψε χριστουγεννιάτικες ωδές. Δίδαξε στο Boston Conservatory και στο NEC και ήταν μουσικός διευθυντής στο «King s Chapel» Βοστώνης.
