1 Overcome Evil by Doing Good July-August 2015 St. Paul in his letter to the Romans, Chapter 12, challenges us to work through our issues by overcoming all negativity and evil by doing good. How difficult is this? My goodness! The Old Testament adage of an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth is replaced by forgiveness, reconciliation, turn the other cheek, move forward, and move on. This is the New Testament Gospel message of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Who, on the Cross, forgave his tormentors with His holy and blessed statement: Father forgive them; they do not understand what they are doing. Life s circumstances, my dear friends, fill our plates with countless challenges. One of the greatest of the multitude of evil thoughts, words, and deeds is holding on to a grudge. The Encarta Dictionary defines grudge as a feeling of ill will, especially one lasting for a long time. It s easy to hold on to bad feelings about someone who has hurt us, offended us, outraged us, et al. However, looking to payback evil actions by returning the hurt is not the better way to handle the situation... As thorny as it is, we, each of us, as good Christians, must seek to pass the test of faith with flying colours by doing good. It is easier said than done, but we must try, and, be successful at it. Otherwise, our Christian outlook becomes muddy At the same time, one does not have to be buddy buddy with those whom we do not see eye to eye. We are, however, invited to love one another, to forgive 70 times 7, to rise to the occasion, and, to ask the Lord to forgive those who love us, and those who despise/hate us. Making peace and not war is a holy approach to life Let us then keep moving forward by seeking firstly the Kingdom of Heaven. Let us be focused on emphasizing the good in all things and not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Let s guard our mouth, our thoughts, and our actions. 3 Parish Council News THANK YOU ΕΥΧΑΡΙΣΤΩ!! This year s Greek Festival on June 3, 4, 5 & 6 was our most successful festival ever! It was a tremendous weekend filled with cooking and running, eating and dancing, millions of smiles & laughs and a quite a few sore feet. This great event would not have been possible without the love and support of our parishioners and thousands of our closest family and friends! The annual Greek Festival is always our biggest event of the year and it has 3 very important objectives: 1) To bring parishioners together, giving us an opportunity to get to know each other and to work as a team 2) To connect with our local community, exposing them to our faith, culture and, of course, our filoxenia 3) To raise funds for our parish to support projects and capital improvements We hit a homerun with each of our festival objectives! Congratulations! 1) Nearly 300 volunteers from ages 5 to 90 worked every area of the festival ensuring all ran smoothly. 2) Over 10,000 visitors from all over New England were all buzzing with great things to say about our Thursday Gyro Night, delicious food, tasty pastries, speedy service and our volunteers in orange shirts! 3) Our weekend income (food, pastries, bar, raffle, kid s activities & rides) was over $231k. Additionally, the sponsor book and raffle pre-sales combine to bring in over $32k, giving us a gross total of over $263,000! We estimate total expenses of approximately $125k leaving us with an estimated net of over $138,000! Everybody that participated in and supported this year's festival should be very proud. Whether you came for a few hours, took 3 days off from work, or helped us financially, your support was critical. On behalf of the Parish Council, I would like to thank each of you that helped make this festival a great success. For those that were not able to help out with the festival, don t worry, you ll have an opportunity to show your appreciation and support to your fellow parishioners when we hold our Gyro Fest this fall! Tentatively planned for late September, we re looking at a smaller outdoor event with everybody s favorites, Gyro & Loukoumades! The Gyro Fest will be a special fundraiser for capital projects. Stay tuned for more details to come. Summer & Stewardship As we enter the summer months, many of us will take the opportunity to take time off and maybe take a nice vacation to help us recover from the festival. The Parish Council will be working on several important maintenance projects, including parking lot repairs and sealing, floor waxing/carpet cleaning and masonry repairs. During these summer months, please don t forget to continue supporting St. Athanasius through your stewardship contributions. Remember that we use stewardship donations to pay for the day to day operation of our parish, including maintenance, utilities, insurance, payroll, etc. Our annual operating budget is roughly $520k which can be covered by our 515 families contributing an average of $1,000 annually or only $85 per month. Don t worry about the mortgage as we are fortunate to have strong rental income to cover that each month. With stewardship covering our operational expenses, rent covering the mortgage, our festival income can be used to help us with capital improvements and investments towards our future. As of mid-june, we have received approximately 30% of our stewardship goal. If you have not yet made your 2015 stewardship contribution, please consider making your donation this summer. For those that have already made your donation, thank you, and please consider if you can increase your annual stewardship commitment to help us meet our goals. Have a great Summer - Καλο καλοκαιρι! 4 St. Paraskeve the Righteous Martyr of Rome Sunday, July 26 th, 2015 Reading: Saint Paraskeve, who was from a certain village near Rome, was born to pious parents, Agatho and Politia. Since she was born on a Friday (in Greek, Paraskeve), she was given this name, which means "preparation" or "preparedness" (compare Matt. 27:62, Mark 15:42, Luke 23:54, and John 19:31, where 'Friday' is called "the day of the preparation"). From childhood she was instructed in the sacred letters and devoted herself to the study of the divine Scriptures, while leading a monastic life and guiding many to the Faith of Christ. During the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius, she was apprehended because she was a Christian and was urged to worship the idols, but she answered with the words of Jeremias: "Let the gods that have not made heaven and the earth perish from off the earth" (Jer. 10:11). Because of this she endured exceedingly painful torments, and was beheaded in the year 140. The faithful pray to her for the healing of eye ailments. St. Panteleimon the Great Martyr & Healer Monday, July 27 th, 2015 Reading: This Saint, who had Nicomedia as his homeland, was the son of Eustorgius and Eubula. His father was an idolater, but his mother was a Christian from her ancestors. It was through her that he was instructed in piety, and still later, he was catechized in the Faith of Christ by Saint Hermolaus (see July 26) and baptized by him. Being proficient in the physician's vocation, he practiced it in a philanthropic manner, healing every illness more by the grace of Christ than by medicines. Thus, although his parents had named him Pantoleon ("in all things a lion"), because of the compassion he showed for the souls and bodies of all, he was worthily renamed Panteleimon, meaning "all-merciful." On one occasion, when he restored the sight of a certain blind man by calling on the Divine Name, he enlightened also the eyes of this man's soul to the knowledge of the truth. This also became the cause for the martyrdom of him who had been blind, since when he was asked by whom and in what manner his eyes had been opened, in imitation of that blind man of the Gospel he confessed with boldness both who the physician was and the manner of his healing. For this he was put to death immediately. Panteleimon was arrested also, and having endured many wounds, he was finally beheaded in the year 305, during the reign of Maximian. Saint Panteleimon is one of the Holy Unmercenaries, and is held in special honor among them, even as Saint George is among the Martyrs. 3

8 News and Announcements Sunday Catechetical School Summer time despite the idyllic assumptions we make, can be a challenging time for many parents. The main challenge is that we get out of our routine with children being around the house when typically they would be at school, no homework to give them a constructive daily activity, and perhaps protracted arguments when it s time for bed as our youngsters start to push the limits that we had set during the winter. Some families are lucky enough to be able to afford a relaxing vacation, while others have to stay in town, and make do with friends and families that are no longer around to visit, schedule play-dates, and go out to dinner with. Does any of this sound familiar? And now I want you to think back on your summer time vacations when you were a child. I m sure you have plenty of great and font memories of an uncomplicated fun time! I remember spending my summer vacations on the small fishing village of Vrontados, in Chios Greece. As soon as school was out, my mother would pack a few summer clothes and take me and my sister to spend our entire summer vacation with my grandparents. It was a magical time with long daily swims(sometimes 2, or 3x a day!), fishing, long night-time walks with neighbors, and harvesting sweet grapes and figs from my grandpa s vineyard. We had no running water, so we had to draw water from the well in grandpa s yard, and climb a steep mountain-side to get drinking water from a spring under a big platanus tree. Despite all these changes in my daily routine, I had no idea how challenging summer was for my mother. As the wife of a sailor (travelling far away for years at a time), she still had to take care of the household, help my grandparents, and accommodate the primitive living conditions of our summer vacation. Still, she created a world for us that appeared (and was) safe, fun, loving and consistent! Part of that consistency was going to Church every Sunday. We had options too! A 10 minute walk to the beautiful little Church of St. Nicholas, or a 40 minute walk to the monastery of Panagia Myrtidiotisa, up a steep and winding road that lead high, up the seashore to the monastery. Either way, we would attend Church with the same frequency and consistency as during the winter months. The summer feast of Christ s Transfiguration would find us carrying big baskets of the first grape-harvest to Church so it would be distributed to those attending. And these memories still remain with me, vivid and loving, decades after they happened. 7

9 News and Announcements In the same way, I pray that each of you creates lasting memories for your children despite the summer routine change no matter where you are. The relaxing and quiet moments of our summer holidays give us plenty of opportunities to visit holy places, read inspiring books, paint an icon, make a craft, learn a new prayer, talk to grandma and grandpa, and so many other holy things! Summertime is a time of rich Liturgical life including the celebration of the Dormition of the Theotokos on August 15th and the name days of several popular Saints that are so vividly and faithfully celebrated in our favorite Greek vacation spots. Take advantage of such special places, participate humbly in the celebrations and learn about the life of the local Saints. Our Catechetical Sunday School program will resume on Sunday September 13th. You can register your child (or yourself as a teacher!) online at: Till then on behalf of our entire teaching staff I wish you a safe, relaxing and spiritual time whether you visit the beach, the mountains or just the back yard! Fifties Plus The Fifties Plus Ministry is planning a day trip in the fall. More information will be in the September bulletin. Wishing you a peaceful and relaxing summer. 8
