6 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Dear in Christ, All of the members of St. Demetrios Church were deeply saddened to learn last month of the sudden and unexpected death of one of our community s most active members, known to us all by the affectionate name of Someone Else. As we approach the many activities of the months ahead, we must reflect, all of us, upon this very sobering and distressing news. The untimely passing of Someone Else creates a loss that will be very difficult for the community to fill. The reason for this, of course, is that Else has been a very active and faithful member of the community for many years, and for every one of those years, Someone always did far more than a normal person s share of community work. Whenever a position of leadership and responsibility had to be filled, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration and results. I m sorry I don t have the time to help, but I m sure you ll find Someone Else was the often heard answer. Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, a meeting to attend, or a voice needed for the choir, we often found ourselves saying, I have to pass this time, perhaps Someone Else can do it. Although he always tried to give anonymously, it has long been common knowledge that Someone Else was one of the most generous givers in the community and the church. Whenever we have felt financial need, we all assumed that Someone Else would make up the difference. Many of us didn t realize or didn t want to realize that our community is our lifeline to our faith and culture and it needs our moral and financial support, but maybe that s because Someone Else worked very hard to maintain our buildings and make this community a spiritual and cultural centre for all of us. Someone Else was a wonderful person, but one person can only do so much, and everybody expected too much of Someone Else. Now that Someone Else is gone, we wonder what we are going to do. Since we can t depend on Someone Else to do everything for us any longer, then all of us together must do the work necessary to meet the needs and serve in all the aspects - spiritual and cultural - in our community. 7 Thoughts from our Parish Priest Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ, Όλα τα μέλη της κοινότητας μας λυπήθηκαν πολύ τον περασμένο μήνα, όταν έμαθαν για το ξαφνικό και απροσδόκητο θάνατο ενός από των πιο ενεργών μελών της κοινότητας μας, γνωστός σε όλους μας φιλικά ως Κάποιος Άλλος. Καθώς πλησιάζουν οι πολλές δραστηριότητες μας στους ερχόμενους μήνες, πρέπει να αναλογιστούμε λίγο, όλοι μας, αυτή την λυπητερή είδηση. Ο ξαφνικός θάνατος του Κάποιου Άλλου δημιουργεί μια έλλειψη η οποία θα είναι πολύ δύσκολη για την κοινότητα να συμπληρώσει. Φυσικά, ο λόγος για αυτό είναι ότι ο Άλλος ήταν ένα πολύ ενεργό και πιστό μέλος της κοινότητας για πολλά χρόνια, και για κάθε ένα από αυτά τα χρόνια, ο Κάποιος έκανε περισσότερη από τη δικιά του μερίδα δουλειάς στην κοινότητα. Όταν υπήρχε μια θέση αρχηγίας και ευθύνης να συμπληρωθεί, κοιτούσαμε σε αυτό το θαυμάσιο άτομο για έμπνευση και αποτελέσματα. Συγνώμη, δεν έχω τον καιρό να βοηθήσω, αλλά είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα βρεις Κάποιον Άλλον, ήταν συχνά η απάντηση που ακούγαμε. Όποτε υπήρχε μια δουλειά να γίνει, ένα μάθημα να διδαχτεί, μια συγκέντρωση, η χρειαζόταν μια φωνή για την χορωδία, συχνά λέγαμε, Πρέπει να πω όχι αυτή τη φορά, ίσως Κάποιος Άλλος μπορεί να το κάνει. Αν και πάντα προσπαθούσε να δώσει ανώνυμα, για πολύ καιρό είναι γνωστό ότι ο Κάποιος Άλλος ήταν ένα από τα πιo γενναιόδωρα μέλη στην κοινότητα και την εκκλησία. Κάθε φορά που υπήρχε ανάγκη όλοι μας υποθέσαμε ότι ο Κάποιος Άλλος θα συμπλήρωνε την διαφορά. Πολλοί από εμάς δεν καταλάβαμε, η δεν θέλαμε να καταλάβουμε, ότι η κοινότητα μας είναι η σανίδα σωτηρίας για την πίστη και τον πολιτισμό μας, και χρειάζεται την ηθική και οικονομική μας υποστήριξη, αλλά αυτό ίσως να οφείλεται στο δεδομένο ότι ο Κάποιος Άλλος πάντα εργάστηκε πολύ σκληρά να διατηρηθούν αυτά τα κτίρια, και να γίνει αυτή η κοινότητα ένα πνευματικό και πολιτιστικό κέντρο για όλους μας. Ο Κάποιος Άλλος ήταν ένα θαυμάσιο πρόσωπο, αλλά ένα άτομο μπορεί να κάνει μόνο τόσα πολλά, και όλοι περίμεναν πολλά από τον Κάποιον Άλλο. Τώρα που ο Κάποιος Άλλος έχει φύγει από την ζωή, αναρωτιόμαστε τι θα κάνουμε. Αφού δεν μπορούμε να βασιζόμαστε πια στον Κάποιον Άλλο να τα κάνει όλα για εμάς, τότε πρέπει όλοι μας να κάνουμε την απαραίτητη δουλειά για να εξυπηρετήσουμε τις ανάγκες και να υπηρετήσουμε σε όλες τις πτυχές - πνευματικές και πολιτιστικές - την κοινότητα μας. 8 Message from the Community President Aγαπητοί Συμπάρικοι, Πολλές φορές σκέπτομαι, τι θα σας ενδιέφερε να διαβάσετε στο μηνιαίο μας Bulletin ως μήνυμα από μένα, ώστε να το γράψω. Αποφάσισα λοιπόν να σας πω για κάποια θέματα, που συζητήσαμε στη Γενική Συνέλευση. Θα ήθελα να γνωρίζετε, ότι δυο πράγματα καίνε την δική μου ψυχή για την Κοινότητά μας: Το πρώτο είναι, πως θα καταφέρουμε να συννενοηθούμε μεταξύ μας για το κοινό καλό και πως θα καταφέρουμε να κρατήσουμε την εθνική μας ταυτότητα ζωντανή, δηλαδή τη θρησκεία μας, τη γλώσσα μας, τα ήθη και τα έθιμα μας και όλα όσα μας χαρακτηρίζουν ως Έλληνες. Μέσα μου γνωρίζω, πως αν δεν κάνουμε εμείς το καθήκον μας θα χάσουμε το ποιοι είμαστε, και αυτό για μένα είναι η μεγαλύτερη απώλεια και ανευθυνότητα απέναντι σε όλους. Δεν χρειαζόμαστε κατακτητές για να εκτιμήσουμε την ομορφιά της κληρονομιάς μας, ούτε κάποιους να μας τη στερήσουν, για να προσπαθήσουμε να τη διατηρήσουμε και να την προάγουμε. Ίσως έχουμε φταίξει και εμείς ως συμβούλια στην πορεία των χρόνων με τα λάθη, που κάναμε. Ωστόσο τα λάθη μπορούν να μας οφελήσουν, αν από αυτά μάθουμε και καταφέρουμε να συγχωρούμε και να προχωρούμε δημιουργικά. Ελάτε να συμμετάσχετε σε ό,τι όμορφο μπορούμε να κάνουμε για την Κοινότητά μας. Η δεύτερη σκέψη που με καίει είναι η οικονομική ανεξαρτησία της Κοινότητας. Είναι αλήθεια, ότι τα μέλη μας δεν εκκλησιάζονται όπως παλιά και για αυτό δεν μπορούμε να βασιστούμε αποκλειστικά στα έσοδα της Εκκλησίας. Θα ήθελα να σκεφτείτε την εκδοχή να δίνετε τη συνεισφορά σας με μια αυτόματη πληρωμή άνα μήνα ή ανα χρόνο και έτσι οι λογαριασμοί θα συνεχίσουν να πληρώνονται. Επίσης, μελετάμε τη δημιουργία ενός ταμείου επιχορήγησης, εγώ το λέω προίκα της Κοινότητας μας, ένα ποσό που θα υπάρχει για να έχουμε όλα αυτά που δεν συντηρούνται από μόνα τους. Χρειάζομαστε χρήματα για πολλά πράγματα και προσπαθούμε με διάφορες εκδηλώσεις να βγάλουμε τα έξοδα μας και για αυτό η συμμετοχή σας είναι πολύ σημαντική. Στα πολιτιστικά μας, στις 6 Ιουνίου θα έχουμε μια ομιλία για τα αρχαία των Συκεών, στις 1.30μμ στο χώρο μας (δεν υπάρχει τιμή για την είσοδο, μπορείτε να δώσετε, ό,τι έχετε ευχαρίστηση). Ακόμα για το Folkorama θα χρειαστούμε βοήθεια σε πολλές θέσεις. Παρακαλώ πολύ, προσφερθείτε, για να συνεργαστούμε μιας και αυτό είναι μια σημαντική πηγή εσόδων για την Κοινότητα. Το Σεπτέμβριο θα έχουμε μια όμορφη βραδιά με την ομάδα των ηλικιωμένων, την οποία περιμένω με ενθουσιασμό, καθώς η συμμετοχή είναι που με γεμίζει χαρά. Τέλος Σεπτέμβρη, ελπίζουμε να δούμε στην πόλη μας και τον αξιότιμο κύριο Πρόξενο για υποθέσεις, που πιθανόν υπάρχουν. Μελετάμε, επίσης, να αλλάξουμε το μανουάλι για τα κεριά της Εκκλησίας, θέλουμε να έχει αποροφητήρα, για να βγαίνει ο καπνός έξω. Περιμένω τις σκέψεις και την υποστήριξη σας πάνω σε αυτό. Σας εύχομαι υγεία και χαρά στα σπίτια σας. Καλό καλοκαίρι σε όλους μας. 8

9 Message from the Community President My fellow parishioners, Many times, I think of what message from me would be useful and interesting for you to read in our monthly bulletin. I have decided to write about a few subjects that were discussed during our AGM. I want you to know that two things burn in my soul for our community - the first being, how can we come together for the betterment of our community to keep our Greek identity alive? In other words our faith, our language, our values, our customs, and all that characterizes us as being Greek. Inside of me, I know that if we do not do our duty, we will lose who we are. That, for me, would be the greatest loss and irresponsibility on our part. We should not wait until it is too late to appreciate the beauty of our heritage, nor wait for someone to deprive us in order that we may try to prove ourselves. As the community council, we can benefit from past mistakes if we learn from them, and are able to come together and move forward creatively. Let us move forward together in creating something beautiful in our community. My second burning thought is the economic standing of the Community. It is true that our members do not attend church as often as they have in the past, and because of this we cannot rely exclusively on the income of the Church to survive. I would like each of you to think about switching to automatic donations per month or year, so that our bills will continue to be paid. Also, we are looking at the creation of an endowment - which I call the dowry of our Community - a monetary fund that will exist to cover the cost of items that do not generate income. We need money for many things, and we are trying with a variety of options to cover the operating costs of the Church, and because of this, your support is very important. In our cultural programing, on the 6th of June we will have a presentation about the archaic site at Sikyon, at 1:30 pm in the MHCC (there is no cost to attend the presentation, however monetary donations are appreciated). For Folklorama, we still need help in many areas. Please, consider volunteering your time, as the pavilion is an important source of income for the Community. In September, we will have a wonderful evening with the Senior s Group, which I wait for with enthusiasm, as it is seeing all those gathered together that fills me with joy. At the end of September we hope to host the honourable Consul General for any paperwork and other individual affairs, as needed. We are also looking at changing the candle area at the back of the Church. We need to have an exhaust fan/ vent installed so as to allow the smoke from the candles to go outside. 14 Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the icons will look like. On the page with the icons, the top layer is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testmanent icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfillment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfillment of that promise in the New Testament. The icons that have not been crossed out are the ones still available. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individuals saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated or reserved painted already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. This is the list of the icons needing replacement on the Iconostasis: - The Annunciation of the Theotokos - The Presentation of the child Jesus to the Temple - The Raising of Lazarus from the dead - Doubting Thomas - The Ascension of Christ - The Holy Pentecost The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9, The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2, The price for the icons on the Iconostasis is $2, You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church. 16 Greetings from the Ladies of Philoptochos Greetings! By the Grace of God in the Month of May we celebrated two major holidays of our Lord, The Ascension and The Pentecost. We also celebrated the major Feast Day of Saints Constantine and Helen. Xronia Polla to Fr. Kostas, Axios! And Xronia Polla to all Constantines and Helens. Saint Helen, an excellent example of motherhood and equal to the apostles, remains an inspiring example of how to live the Christian life. It is said that anything that her son Constantine achieved he owed to his devout mother. Although the Empress Helen lived in a Palace that was known for its luxuries, she still lived a very humble and holy life and was not in any way shaped by the riches or power of the position. Her only desire was to please God and to enter his kingdom. Her works consisted of building many churches, including the Church of the Resurrection and the Church of the Ascension in Jerusalem, as well as the Church of the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem, and on Mount Tabor she built a church to commemorate The Transfiguration. She is also known for the finding of the Holy Cross. Her passion in life was philanthropic work. She was dedicated to the service of the poor and needy. Her life is a profound example of Christian service for all of us to follow. May she intercede for our beautiful community. It is with great joy and enthusiasm that we have started the preparations for Folklorama, an annual event that gives us the wonderful opportunity to showcase our Faith and Culture to the community, for the glory of God. An event like Folklorama would not be possible without the support of all our community members, including volunteers and sponsors. 17 Χαίρετίσματα απο τις Κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου Mε την χαρη του Θεου τον μηνα Μαιο εορτασαμε δυο μεγαλες Δεσποτικες εορτες της Αναληψεως και της Πεντηκοστης και μια αλλη μεγαλη εορτη των αγιων Κωσταντινου και Ελενης. Χρονια πολλα και ευλογημενα στον ιερεα μας π. Κωσταντινο ΑΞΙΟΣ! και σε ολους τους Κωσταντινους και Ελενιτσες. Επι της ευκαιριας της εορτης της κανουμε μια συντομη και ευλαβικη ανανδρομη της σκεψης μας στη ζωη και το εργο της αγιας Ελενης, της εξαιρετης αυτης μητερας και φλογερης χριστιανης και ισαποστολου οπου οτι εκανε ο γυιος της για τον χριστιανισμο αυτο οφειλεται στην υπεροχη μητερα του. Αγιασμενη ζωη εζησε. Παρα τις τιμες που απολαμβανε σαν αυτοκρατειρα δεν παρασυρθηκε απο αυτες. Δεν περηφανευτηκε απο την δοξα και τα μεγαλεια. Εμεινε παντα η ταπεινη, η απλη, η καλοκαρδη, η πονετικη, η πιστη. Ποθος της ενας. Πως να αρεσει στο Χριστο και πως να κερδισει την βασιλεια Του. Το εργο της δεν το περιορισε μονο στο κτισιμο των αναριθμητων εκκλησιων οπως στα Ιεροσολυμα της Αναστασεως και της Αναληψεως του Κυριου, στην Βηθλεεμ της Γεννησεως, στο ορος Θαβωρ της Μεταμορφοσεως την ευρεσιν του Τιμιου Σταυρου κ.λ.π.η φιλανθρωπια απετελεσε βασικο στοιχειο της ζωης της μια αγια ζωη γεματη απο εργα χριστιανικης αγαπης.διακονιας και δρασεως μεχρι το τελος αυτης της ζωης στα 80 της χρονια. Το φωτεινο παραδειγμα της ας γινει για τον καθενα μας ενας οδοδειχτης και ας μεσιτευει για την ομορφη μας Κοινοτητα. Αμην! Με γοργους ρυθμους ενθουσιασμο και χαρα για την μεγαλη αυτη ευκαιρια προς δοξαν Θεου και την προβολη της Κοινοτητας μας, αρχισαμε τις προετοιμασιες για το Φολκλοραμα. 19 Greek School The 2014/2015 school year came to an end with our Greek School Graduation and Closing Ceremony on Saturday, May 30 th. We congratulate all the students for their commitment and hard work. Their accomplishments are great and we are extremely proud of them all! The Greek School Parent Association would like to take this opportunity to thank our principal, Athena Dinos, for her ongoing dedication to the Greek School and the teaching staff and assistants for their efforts and achievements this year. The knowledge that they share with our children forms the foundation for which our language and culture can pass on from generation to generation. Thank you to all the parents and the entire Community for their support of our events. We have once again had a very successful year.
