Νίκη ΠΑΣΟΚ και πιθανή αυτοδυναµία βγάζουν τα exit polls Μεγάλη νίκη του ΠΑΣΟΚ δείχνει η κάλπη του exit poll. Το ΠΑΣΟΚ στο exit poll των επτά εταιρειών δηµοσκόπησης εµφανίζεται να συγκεντρώνει ποσοστό που κυµαίνεται από 41 έως 44% έναντι 34,3% έως 37,3% που λαµβάνει η Νέα ηµοκρατία. Αυτή η διαφορά βγάζει 151 έως 159 έδρες και αυτοδυναµία. Η εκτίµηση εκλογικού αποτελέσµατος της Public Issue δίνει για το ΠΑΣΟΚ ποσοστό 39,5% έως 42,5% έναντι 34-37% της Νέας ηµοκρατίας. Τα πρώτα επίσηµα αποτελέσµατα αναµένονται στις 20:30 ενώ ασφαλές συµπέρασµα αναµένεται γύρω στις 22:00. Με 42% το ΠΑΣΟΚ εξασφαλίζει αυτοδυναµία ανεξάρτητα από το αν θα µπουν ή όχι στη Βουλή οι Οικολόγοι Πράσινοι. Page 1

After our AGM on Sunday 27 th of September a new Executive Committee was appointed. The Committee consists of 8 members full of energy, innovative and creative ideas and passion. Είναι µεγάλη µου τιµή να είµαι η νέα Πρόεδρος της Κοινότητας µας. Μετά τη Γενική µας Συνέλευση στις 27 Σεπτεµβρίου δηµιουργήθηκε νέο Συµβούλιο. Το νέο Συµβούλιο απαρτίζεται από 8 µέλη της Κοινότητας γεµάτα ενέργεια, ιδέες και πάθος. I would like personally and on behalf of the new Committee to THANK the previous Committee for their valuable contribution and hard work for this community. A big thank you goes to: Andreas Dionysiou, Costas Kritos, Michael Phanoulas, Penelope Williams, Christos Bailey and Elias Drakakis. Words are not enough to express our gratitude. We now have a beautiful hall with an amazing new kitchen, renovated flat and most of all a united community with a successful school and the best service ever in our church. You, the previous Greek Committee, should be very proud of your achievements. You will always be in our hearts. 3 ΙΣΤΟΡΙΚΟ ΓΕΓΟΝΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΜΗΝΑ HISTORICAL EVENT OF THE MONTH The Meaning of OXI Day by Litsa Stathacopoulos Greece, the birthplace of democracy, said OXI (NO) to fascism and defended its birthright, despite overwhelming and unfavorable odds. I wanted to write this article to share with you all my feelings and impressions about this historic celebration. On this particular day we give honor to the many men and woman who stood up to the fascist Mussolini, and this was no small thing to do. First of all, Mussolini had 44 million people, and Greece had 7 million. Italy had ten times the fire power of Greece in its army navy and air force which had total air superiority, since Greece had only a small defensive force. The demands from Mussolini were sent to Prime Minister Metaxa. He gave Greece three hours to reply to his demands to surrender, and for the Italian troops to occupy Greece and raise the Italian Flag on top of the Parthenon. But Mussolini never even waited for Metaxas' reply. He had five heavily armed divisions of Italian soldiers moving from controlled Albania over the border into Greece. In the early hours of Oct 28th Metaxa gave his reply loud and clear: OXI (NO). The "OXI" cry has become a Hellenic battle cry that blooms defiantly every 28th of October. This cry of "OXI" is repeated by every Hellenic Community around the world, numbering more than ten million Greeks. Though the Italians out numbered the Greek soldiers by more than two to one, the Greeks astonished the Italian generals with their courage, their tenacity, and their limited artillery precision. The Greek forces had six mortars for each division against the invaders' sixty. Within four weeks of the invasion those Greeks drove the Italian army back into Albania and kept on going, continuing the pursuit until they were 60 kilometers into Albania which is known as Northern Epirus. By this time Mussolini had replaced his commanding generals several times and finally assumed command himself. He tried to rouse his troops to victory with speeches of the great legacy of the Romans, but the Greeks kept on pursuing and there was great concern that the Greeks would cross the Adriatic Sea and invade Italy. No free country around the world believed that Greece would survive the attack. As a small country Greece faithfully and courageously met her obligations to her allies with heroism and self-sacrifice. Greece suffered much more than other countries that were on the victorious Allied side. Greece lost the highest percentage of her population, about 12%, which means about one million people. That is why the world leaders of that time recognized the contribution of the Greeks. Mr. Churchill of England said "Today we shall say that the Greeks fight like heroes, but form now on we shall say that heroes fight like Greeks." All those who believe in freedom and democracy give honor to the heroes who died on October 28, 1940 which is 63 years ago. Let us all say a big OXI to wars, to terrorism and to hate, and a big "yes" to freedom, democracy and love. This is history, my friends. Page 3

4 Ο ΥΣΣΕΑΣ ΕΛΥΤΗΣ Η πορεία προς το Μέτωπο Από το «Άξιον Εστί» ODYSSEUS ELYTIS The march toward the front From Axion Esti "Ξηµερώνοντας τ' Αγιαννιού, µε την αύριο των Φώτων, λάβαµε τη διαταγή να κινήσουµε πάλι µπροστά, για τα µέρη όπου δεν έχει καθηµερινές και σκόλες. Έπρεπε, λέει, να πιάσουµε τις γραµµές που κρατούσανε ως τότε οι Αρτινοί, από Χιµάρα ως Τεπελένι. Λόγω που εκείνοι πολεµούσανε απ' την πρώτη µέρα, συνέχεια, κι είχαν µείνει σκεδόν οι µισοί και δεν αντέχανε άλλο. Νύχτα πάνω στη νύχτα βαδίζαµε ασταµάτητα, ένας πίσω απ' τον άλλο, ίδια τυφλοί. Με κόπο ξεκολλώντας το ποδάρι από τη λάσπη, όπου, φορές, εκαταβούλιαζε ίσαµε το γόνατο. Επειδή το πιο συχνά ψιχάλιζε στους δρόµους έξω, καθώς µες στην ψυχή µας. Και τις λίγες φορές όπου κάναµε στάση να ξεκουραστούµε, µήτε που αλλάζαµε κουβέντα, µονάχα σοβαροί και αµίλητοι, φέγγοντας µ' ένα µικρό δαδί, µία µία εµοιραζόµασταν τη σταφίδα. Ή φορές πάλι, αν ήταν βολετό, λύναµε βιαστικά τα ρούχα και ξυνόµασταν µε λύσσα ώρες πολλές, όσο να τρέξουν τα αίµατα. Τι µας είχε ανέβει η ψείρα ως το λαιµό, κι ήταν αυτό πιο κι απ' την κούραση ανυπόφερτο. Τέλος, κάποτε ακουγότανε στα σκοτεινά η σφυρίχτρα, σηµάδι ότι κινούσαµε, και πάλι σαν τα ζα τραβούσαµε µπροστά να κερδίσουµε δρόµο, πριχού ξηµερώσει και µας βάλουνε στόχο τ' αεροπλάνα. Επειδή ο Θεός δεν κάτεχε από στόχους ή τέτοια, κι όπως το 'χε συνήθειο του, στην ίδια πάντοτε ώρα ξηµέρωνε το φως. Κι ότι ήµασταν σιµά πολύ στα µέρη όπου δεν έχει καθηµερινές και σκόλες, µήτε αρρώστους και γερούς, µήτε φτωχούς και πλούσιους, το καταλαβαίναµε. Γιατί κι ο βρόντος πέρα, κάτι σαν καταιγίδα πίσω απ' τα βουνά, δυνάµωνε ολοένα. Ύστερα και γιατί, ολοένα πιο συχνά, τύχαινε τώρα ν' απαντούµε απ' τ' άλλο µέρος να' ρχονται οι αργές οι συνοδείες µε τους λαβωµένους. Όπου απιθώνανε χάµου τα φορεία οι νοσοκόµοι, µε τον κόκκινο σταυρό στο περιβραχιόνιο, φτύνοντας µέσα στις παλάµες, και το µάτι τους άγριο για τσιγάρο. Κι οπού κατόπι, σαν ακούγανε για πού τραβούσαµε, κουνούσαν το κεφάλι, αρχινώντας ιστορίες για σηµεία και τέρατα. Όµως εµείς το µόνο που προσέχαµε ήταν εκείνες οι φωνές µέσα στα σκοτεινά, που ανέβαιναν, καυτές ακόµη από την πίσσα του βυθού ή το θειάφι: «Οϊ Οϊ, µάνα µου»,«οϊ οϊ, µάνα µου», και κάποτε, πιο σπάνια, ένα πνιχτό µουσούνισµα, ίδιο ροχαλητό, που 'λεγαν, όσοι ξέρανε, είναι αυτός ο ρόγχος του θανάτου. Ήταν φορές που εσέρνανε µαζί τους κι αιχµαλώτους, µόλις πιασµένους λίγες ώρες πριν, στα ξαφνικά γιουρούσια που κάναν τα περίπολα. Βροµούσανε κρασί τα χνότα τους, κι οι τσέπες τους γιοµάτες κονσέρβα ή σοκολάτες. Όµως εµείς δεν είχαµε, ότι κοµµένα τα γιοφύρια πίσω µας, και τα λίγα µουλάρια µας, κι εκείνα ανήµπορα µέσα στο χιόνι και στη γλιστράδα της λασπουριάς. Τέλος, κάποια φορά, φανήκανε µακριά οι καπνοί που ανέβαιναν µεριές µεριές, κι οι πρώτες στον ορίζοντα κόκκινες, λαµπερές φωτοβολίδες." At dawn on St John's Day, the day after Epiphany, we received the order to move up to the places where there were no weekdays or Sundays. We had to take over the lines, held until then by the men from Arta, which extended from Heimarra to Tepeleni, because they had been fighting without a break right from the start and only half of them were left and they couldn't bear any more. Night after night, we marched without stopping, one behind the other, as if blind. Slogging through the mud with great effort, we sank up to the knee. Because it often drizzled on the roads as in our souls. And the few times we stopped to rest, we wouldn't exchange a word, but grim and silent, with a little torch for light, we shared our raisins one by one. At our times, if we had the chance, we hurriedly loosened our clothes and furiously scratched ourselves until we bled. Because the lice had come up as far as our necks, which was even more unbearable than our exhaustion. And then the whistle is heard through the darkness, signaling us to start again, and like pack animals we advanced as far as we could before daybreak, when we would be targets for airplanes. Because God had no idea about such things as targets, and as was his wont, he always made daybreak at the same hour. And we realized that we were very near the places where there are no weekdays or Sundays, neither sick nor hale, neither poor nor rich. Because the distant explosions, like a thunderstorm behind the mountains, kept getting louder, so much so that we could finally make them, slow and heavy from the cannons and quick from the machineguns. And because more and more frequently, we came across medics with the wounded, moving slowly from the front. Wearing armbands with red crosses, they set down their stretchers and spat on their palms, their eyes wild for a cigarette. And when they heard where we were heading they shook their heads, and began to tell horrible stories. But the only thing we paid attention to were those voices in the darkness, rising still burning from the pitch of the pit and from the sulfur. "Oh Mother, Oh, Mother." And sometimes less often, we heard the choking gurgles, like snoring, which those in the know said was the death rattle itself. Sometimes the medics brought prisoners with them, captured only a few hours before during the sudden attack by the patrols. Their breath smelled of wine and their pockets bulged with food tins and chocolate. We didn't have such things, because the bridges behind us were down, and our few mules were incapacitated by snow and slippery mud. Finally, rising smoke appeared here and there, and the first bright flares on the horizon. In common with most Greek islands Skiathos enjoys a beautiful climate, blue seas and golden beaches. From the moment you land in Skiathos, you will be made to feel at home. English is widely spoken everywhere, from the most sophisticated places to the most traditional tavernas. The opinion of most tourists who have visited and spent some time on the island is that the feeling of welcome and friendliness extended by the local people makes a stay here especially rewarding and memorable. Skiathos is the smallest but most cosmopolitan island of the Sporades group only two hours away from Volos by ferry. The island is famous for its beautiful endless and sandy beaches boarded by dense and verdant pine forest, coming down to the crystalline waters. Holidays in Skiathos is ideal for those who love exciting nightlife, shopping, crowded beaches, great fun and entertainment. How to get to Skiathos. There are up to five flights daily from Athens (45 min.) as well as the numerous charter flights from northern Europe. Skiathos can be reached by either ferryboat (3 to 4 daily - 3 hours) or by hydrofoil (75 min.) from Volos or Ag. Konstandinos. Fares are almost double those on Cyclades or Dodecanese lines. There are also one or two ferries a week from Kimi (5 hours). Part of the Mamma Mia Movie was filmed in Skiathos. Vassilias Skiathos Σκιάθος Γιατί η Σκιάθος µπορεί να είναι πραγµατικά το ταξίδι των ονείρων σας. Σαν πολλά άλλα Ελληνικά νησιά η Σκιάθος συνδυάζει όµορφο κλίµα, µπλε θάλασσες και χρυσές παραλίες. Από την στιγµή που φτάνεις στην Σκιάθο είναι σαν να φτάνεις στο σπίτι σου. Όλοι µιλάνε αγγλικά στο νησί. Η φιλοξενία και η φιλία των ανθρώπων από την Σκιάθο κάνει την παραµονή σου αξέχαστη. H Σκιάθος είναι το µικρότερο νησί των Κυκλάδων αλλά και το πιο κοσµοπολίτικο, 2 ώρες από τον Βόλο µε το φέρυ. Το νησί φηµίζεται για τις παραλίες µε τις ατελείωτες αµµουδιές του µε φοινικόδαση που καταλήγουν σε κρυστάλλινα νερά. ιακοπές στην Σκιάθο είναι ιδανικές για αυτούς που θέλουν να διασκεδάσουν, να πάνε για ψώνια και να πάνε σε παραλίες µε κόσµο. Πως µπορείς να πας στην Σκιάθο υπάρχουν καθηµερινά 5 πτήσεις από την Αθήνα (45 λεπτά) καθώς και πτήσεις από την Βόρειο Ευρώπη. Επίσης µπορείτε να πάτε στην Σκιάθο µε πλοίο (3-4 φορές την ηµέρα 3 ώρες) ή φέρυ (75 λεπτά) από τον Βόλο ή τον Αγ Κωνσταντίνο. Υπάρχουν και ένα µε δύο πλοία την εβδοµάδα από την Κύµη (5 ώρες). Στην Σκιάθο γυρίστηκε µέρος του έργου Mamma Mia Olympic win Chatham Cup! (The New Zealand Herald September 21, 2009) A 75th-minute penalty from Raf de Gregorio proved the difference as Wellington Olympic fought back from a goal down to win the Chatham Cup soccer final 2-1 against Three Kings United in Auckland today. Olympic went behind inside three minutes to Three Kings' standout Brazilian playmaker Luiz Del Monte but a pinpoint header from Mickey Malivuk brought them level after 29 minutes before de Gregorio's spot kick sent the trophy to the capital. Captain Mikey Halikias, who was team mascot as an eightyear-old for Olympic's only other final appearance in 1994, said winning the 86-year-old Chatham Cup more than made up for the disappointment of missing out on the central league honours a week ago. "It's huge. At the end of the day we've won a trophy and that's something that Olympic doesn't do very often and it's a great way to pay back all those supporters who travelled up today and have been behind us all season," Halikias said. page=news&article=739 Page 5

New Ambassador We would like to inform you that the new Ambassador of Greece in New Zealand, Mr Dimitrios Anninos, has started his duties. We wish you all the best to his duty. We would like to bring to the attention of the members of our community on especially events of our community not to park near the next door neighbour s driveway. Thank you for your understanding. Cleaning We would like to request from our members any volunteers for the cleaning of the church and the hall every fortnight approximately for 3 hours. Please contact us by Tuesday 20th of October if you are interested in this. The Committee has decided that if no adequate response is received the cleaning will be contracted out, preferably to any community members who would be interested. Το Συµβούλιο αποφάσισε αν δεν υπάρχει αρκετή προσφορά εθελοντών ο καθαρισµός του χωλ και της εκκλησίας θα προσφερθεί ως επαγγελµατική δουλειά, προτειµώντας να δοθεί σε µέλη της κοινότητας µας. Ζητάµε συγνώµη. Marriage On September 20, on Skiathos island in Greece, Theo Simeonides and Christina Messana were united in the Sacrament of Marriage. Congratulations and we wish them all the best! 7 CONSTANTINOS GIORGOS MIKHAILIADIS Costa passed away peacefully on 8 th September. Above all he was a proud Helene. Costa was a very active member of the Greek Community for over 40 years. Together with his father, George, and Maria Finnegan he taught Greek language and culture at the school at the back of the Orthodox Church. He always looked for opportunities to educate and promote Greek ideology, history, culture and language and was a member of the committee of the Greek Society. This gave him the opportunity to do what he did best organise great parties. In the early 1980s, when Mihali Coumbias was President of the Greek Community, Costa and Timos Devliotis were instrumental in purchasing the property next to the Greek Orthodox Church with the vision of developing it into the hall that we have today. They negotiated interest free and low interest loans to buy the property and stood as guarantors. They and Nikos Tsirikos initiated Lottery 500 and numerous fundraising activities to pay for the mortgage. Needless to say with Costa, Timos and Nikos involved there were some great fund raising parties! The Greek flag always had a very special place in Costa s heart. In 2006 he initiated the idea of flying a Greek flag alongside the New Zealand flag on the Auckland harbour bridge on Greek National Day. The Membership fee for a family is only $50 and for an individual $30 annually. Most of the funds raised from membership fees are used for publishing and mailing the Community s newsletter to all members.
