3 From the desk of Father Christos LEST WE FORGET Holy Friday and Pascha constitute the very heart of our Christian faith. Saint Paul said," we worship Jesus crucified and resurrected." The Holy Week and Pascha services were inspired by what the Lord Jesus did during the last few days of His earthly ministry. He redefined the terms of our relationship to God the Father and instituted a New Covenant, a new agreement, between God and man and outlined the conditions of our relationship to His Father. The word Pascha simply means Passover. The Jews' passage from captivity-slavery- to freedom. God kept His promise to Abraham and liberated the Jews through Moses from the tyranny of the Pharaoh. Before God brought them to the Promised Land, however, He established a Covenant with them. The Ten Commandments are the terms of that covenant. If they kept the Law and obeyed His commandments, then they would receive the blessing and protection of God, and they would dwell in the Promised Land. Lest they forget, in the book of Deuteronomy, Moses reminded them about God's Commandments and cautioned them about the consequences of breaking them. Yes, there are consequences when we break the Law of God for the Lord God is both Love and Righteousness. Lest they forget, the New Covenant, the new agreement, which Jesus instituted with His precious blood on the Cross, also has terms. As our Redeemer and Savior, Jesus has kept His part: He took our human nature, fulfilled the demands of the Law of Moses, suffered as prophesied by the prophets for our sins and forgave them, defeated death by His glorious resurrection and glorified our human nature when He ascended into heaven and sat at the right hand of God the Father. He did everything that was necessary for our salvation and eternal life. Now we need to do our part and keep the terms of the agreement: To keep the Commandments of God, to believe in the incarnate Logos, and try with all our strength to become like Him, godlike. Very aptly the Pascha hymn, "As many as have been baptized in Christ, have put on Christ," summarizes our needed response to Him. The newly baptized Christians were invited to become incorporated in the Body of Christ on Holy Saturday, to be united with Him in the Spirit; be resurrected spiritually. We come by the hundreds to participate in His glorious resurrection service on Pascha morning. And we rejoice, singing Christ's triumphant hymn, "Christ is Risen from the dead, by death He has trampled down death, and to those in the tombs He has granted life." Now the acid test of our Christianity, of our commitment to Him, is our regular participation in the life of His Church on the other Sundays of the year, starting with Saint Thomas Sunday. His disciple Thomas acknowledged Him as "My Lord and my God" and gave even his life preaching Christ's Good News. Lest we forget, Christ calls us to carry on His work in our time. CHRIST IS RISEN TRULY HE IS RISEN Father Christos ΑΣ ΜΗΝ ΞΕΧΝΑΜΕ Η Αγία Παρασκευή και Πάσχα είναι η καρδιά της Xριστιανικής μας πίστης.

4 Parish Council President s Message Dear Parishioners, I hope this letter finds you happy and healthy as Holy Week approaches and the glorious Resurrection is at hand. Lent still brings us opportunities to contribute to the progress and well-being of our church. In keeping with our mission to assist those less fortunate, I was encouraged by the vast number of food bags for the needy amassed in our Church Office for distribution and congratulate all of those associated with the Holy Trinity Food Pantry for their efforts. Parishioners should make time on Lazarus Saturday to aid in for the preparation of the palms in the Church Hall following the morning church service. Please come out as many helping hands are needed. On Palm Sunday, there will be a luncheon hosted by the Philoptochos in our church hall following services. The Holy Week schedule is posted again in this bulletin and we look forward to seeing you at all the services. On Great Friday, we will host a Retreat for our youth focusing on the meaning and magnitude of Holy Week and Easter. Finally, our Joy/Hope will sponsor the Easter Egg Hunt after the Agape Service on Pascha for the children of the community. Please make every effort to bring your children to this beautiful service. Our youth programs have remained active during Lent providing readers for Friday services, the Joy Hope Bible Bowl, and participating in the annual Sights and Sounds Festival of the Delaware Valley Parishes. The Greek School and members of our parish marched in the Greek Independence Day Parade in Philadelphia. Our parish youth are preparing for the various presentations that make up the Oratorical Festival. All of our Sunday School students will make a presentation, in groups or individually for the benefit of the community sometime in April. In addition, our junior and high school students will make presentations after services in the evening of Friday, March 27 th in an attempt to qualify for the Delaware Valley Region Junior and Senior Division Oratorical Festival on Saturday, April 18 th, which will be held at our church. On that date, Seventh through Twelfth Grade students from throughout the Delaware Valley will gather to make presentations for the right to compete at the Metropolis level and beyond to the National Competition. Please consider attending these events at our church Friday evening, March 27 th and Saturday morning, April 18 th. Our Festival Committee has been meeting on a bi-weekly basis planning and preparing for this huge event. Food preparation has begun in the kitchen and we will be announcing shortly additional dates for the Community to assist in food preparation in the evenings and on weekends. We plan to introduce new concepts to this year s Festival including technological improvements, online ordering upgrades and other elements to enhance the Festival experience, increase efficiency and maximize our bottom line. The restoration work on the exterior masonry will begin shortly and it will not be long before the front of the church is encased in scaffolding. Keep an eye out for updates in the Sunday bulletin or special mailings as the work commences/progresses. A Capital Campaign Fund for the Church has been initiated and the Committee will be embarking on a program for fundraising. Once the snow receded, we were able to address some facility issues including the complete rebuild of the compromised drains in the north and rear parking lots. The drains were completely rebuilt and the surrounding pavement was repaired. These drains were completely redone for less than $3,000 (total). We have restored function to the wrought iron lanterns on the front of the church, begun exploring options for replacing the existing aluminum lampposts (one of which suffered irreparable damage this past Fall and had to be removed) outside the main Hall entrance. We also placed tile in the kitchen bathrooms in order to address a Board of Health issue. I wish you a blessed Easter. George Rassias Parish Council President

Renewal Friday: Theotokos of the Lifegiving Font / April 29 Reading: Outside of Constantinople, towards the district of the Seven Towers, there was in ancient times a very large and most beautiful church named in honour of the Theotokos; it had been built about the middle of the fifth century by the Emperor Leo the Great (also called "Leo of Thrace," he is commemorated on Jan. 20). Before he became Emperor, he had encountered there a blind man, who being tormented with thirst asked him to help him find water. Leo felt compassion for him and went in search of a source of water but found none. As he became downcast, he heard a voice telling him there was water nearby. He looked again, and found none. Then he heard the voice again, this time calling him "Emperor" and telling him that he would find muddy water in the densely wooded place nearby; he was to take some water and anoint the blind man's eyes with it. When he had done this, the blind man received his sight. After Leo became Emperor as the most holy Theotokos had prophesied, he raised up a church over the spring, whose waters worked many healings and cured maladies by the grace of the Theotokos; from this, it came to be called the "Life-giving Spring." The Church of Christ celebrates the consecration of this church on this day. After the fall of the imperial city, this church was razed to the ground and the materials from it were used for building the mosque of Sultan Bayezid. Nothing remained of that church's ancient beauty, except for a small and paltry chapel, almost completely buried in the ruins. This chapel had twenty-five steps going down into it, and a transom window on the roof, wherefrom it received a little light. Toward the western side of the chapel was the aforementioned holy Spring, fenced about with a railing, and with fish swimming in it. Such was the condition of the Spring until Then even that little remnant was destroyed, occasioned by the uprising of the Greek nation against the Ottoman Empire; the sacred Spring was buried with it and disappeared altogether. But in the days of Sultan Mahmud, when those subject to him were rejoicing in their freedom to practice their religion, permission was sought by the Orthodox Christian community to rebuild at least part of the chapel. Thus the work was begun on July 26, When the excavation had been made, and the foundations of the ancient church were found, there was rebuilt -- by a later writ of permission from the Sultan -- not merely a chapel of the holy Spring, but another new church, constructed upon the foundations of the ancient one. The building of this spacious, beautiful, and most majestic temple began on September 14, 1833, and the work was completed on December 30, On February 2, 1835, the Ecumenical Patriarch Constantine II, serving the Liturgy together with twelve hierarchs and a great company of clergy, as well as a boundless multitude of Christians, performed the consecration of this sacred church and dedicated it to the glory of the Mother of God. On September 6, 1955, however, it was desecrated and destroyed again by the Moslem Turks; it has been restored again, but not to the former magnificence. Apolytikion in the Third Tone As a life-giving fount, thou didst conceive the Dew that is transcendent in essence, O Virgin Maid, and thou hast welled forth for our sakes the nectar of joy eternal, which doth pour forth from thy fount with the water that springeth up unto everlasting life in unending and mighty streams; wherein, taking delight, we all cry out: Rejoice, O thou Spring of life for all men. Kontakion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone O Lady graced by God, you reward me by letting gush forth, beyond reason, the ever-flowing waters of your grace from your perpetual Spring. I entreat you, who bore the Logos, in a manner beyond comprehension, to refresh me in your grace that I may cry out, "Hail redemptive waters." 22 Διάφορα - ΠΑΣΧΑ ή EASTER Δρ. Various - PASCHA or EASTER Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas These two words, Pascha and Easter ecclesiastically mean the same thing, the largest Christian celebration, and the Resurrection of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Let us see now why in Greek we use the word Pascha, while in English we use the word Easter. The word Pascha comes from the Aramaic word pascha, which comes from the Hebrew word pesakh, which means passage, skipping, passing over, the well known Passover. This word was used by the Jewish people in commemoration of the night of the Tenth Plague of Pharaoh, when the Angel of Death saw the blood of the passover lamb on the doorposts of the houses of Hebrews of Egypt "skipped over" them and did not kill their firstborn. Therefore, the Christian Hellenes used the word Pascha to express the passing from death the life (Resurrection). Christ is the Lamb of God, who saved us with his sacrifice (blood) from the sin and death. The modern English term Easter developed from the Old English word Eastre, which itself developed prior to 899. The name refers to the goddess Eastre in Germanic paganism, who was celebrated at the Spring equinox, and has cognates in Old High German oestaruen, plural, Easter (modern German language Ostern). The Old English term Eastre ultimately derives from oeast - meaning the direction of east. This indicates it originally referred to a goddess associated with dawn. Corresponding Indo- European traditions occur with the Roman goddess Aurora and the Greek goddess (Homeric) Eos. However, other people relate the word Easter with the festivities for the goddess Ishtar, which was the Babylonian Aphrodite. The date of Orthodox Pascha was determined by the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. According to the decision of this Synod, Pascha should be celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon of the vernal equinox, but always after the Jewish Passover, in order to maintain the sequence of events of the Crucifixion and Resurrection according to the evangelists. The Orthodox Pascha is celebrated by more than 250 million followers around the world. HAPPY RESURRECTION AND HAPPY PASCHA!

28 LAZARUS SATURDAY Apolytikion in the First Tone O Christ our God, before Your Passion, You raised Lazarus from the dead to confirm the common Resurrection for all. Therefore, we carry the symbols of victory as did the youths, and we cry out to You, the victor over death, "Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. " Kontakion in the Second Tone Christ, everyone's joy, the truth, the light, life, the resurrection of the world, has by His goodness appeared to those on earth. He is the archetype of the resurrection, granting divine forgiveness to all. Reading: Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary, the friends of the Lord Jesus, had given Him hospitality and served Him many times (Luke 10:38-4z; John 12:2-3). They were from Bethany, a village of Judea. This village is situated in the eastern parts by the foothills of the Mount of Olives, about two Roman miles from Jerusalem. When Lazarus - whose name is a Hellenized form of "Eleazar," which means "God has helped," became ill some days before the saving Passion, his sisters had this report taken to our Saviour, Who was then in Galilee. Nonetheless, He tarried yet two more days until Lazarus died; then He said to His disciples, "Let us go into Judea that I might awake My friend who sleepeth." By this, of course, He meant the deep sleep of death. On arriving at Bethany, He consoled the sisters of Lazarus, who was already four days dead. Jesus groaned in spirit and was troubled at the death of His beloved friend. He asked, "Where have ye laid his body?" and He wept over him. When He drew nigh to the tomb, He commanded that they remove the stone, and He lifted up His eyes, and giving thanks to God the Father, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth." And he that had been dead four days came forth immediately, bound hand and foot with the grave clothes, and Jesus said to those standing there, "Loose him, and let him go." This is the supernatural wonder wrought by the Saviour that we celebrate on this day. According to an ancient tradition, it is said that Lazarus was thirty years old when the Lord raised him; then he lived another thirty years on Cyprus and there reposed in the Lord. It is furthermore related that after he was raised from the dead, he never laughed till the end of his life, but that once only, when he saw someone stealing a clay vessel, he smiled and said, "Clay stealing clay." His grave is situated in the city of Kition, having the inscription: "Lazarus the four days dead and friend of Christ." In 890 his sacred relics were transferred to Constantinople by Emperor Leo the Wise, at which time undoubtedly the Emperor composed his stichera for Vespers, "Wishing to behold the tomb of Lazarus..." Reading courtesy of Holy Transfiguration Monastery / Apolytikion courtesy of Narthex Press Kontakion courtesy of Narthex Press / Icon courtesy of Athanasios Clark James the Apostle (the Greater) & brother of St. John the Theologian / April 30 His Holy Relics are enshrined at our Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Reading: James was one of the Twelve, like his brother John (celebrated on Sept. 26), whom the Lord called "Sons of Thunder," because they became great preachers and because of their profound theology. It was the Saint's boldness in preaching the Gospel that Herod Agrippa, the son of Aristobulus and grandson of Herod the Great, could not endure, and so he took him into custody during the days of the Passover, and slew him with the sword (Acts 12: 1-2); and thus he drank the cup of which the Saviour had spoken to him prophetically (Matt. 20:23). As for Herod, the following year he went down to Caesarea, and, as the Acts of the Apostles records: "Upon a set day, Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration" to the elders of Tyre and Sidon; and the flatterers that surrounded him "gave a shout, saying, 'it is the voice of a god, and not of a man.' And immediately an Angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory; and like his grandfather (see Dec. 29) "he was eaten of worms and gave up the spirit" (Acts 12:21-23) Apolytikion in the Third Tone O Holy Apostle James, intercede with the merciful God that He grant unto our souls forgiveness of offences. Kontakion in the Second Tone The voice of thy God thou heardest when it called to thee, O glorious James; hence, casting off thy father's love, thou together with John thy brother didst run straightway to Christ the Lord, and with him was granted to see the Lord's most divine Transfiguration. 29 St. George the Great Martyr and Trophy-bearer / Feast Day: April 23 Life of the Saint This great and wonderful athlete of Christ s was the son of a wealthy and high-ranking Cappadocian family. George having lost his father at the age of ten, his mother Polychronia, who had become a Christian without her husband s knowledge, returned to Palestine, her homeland, and brought up her son in the evangelical virtues. Handsome, intelligent and refined in manner, George embarked on a military career at the age of eighteen. He pleased his superiors and was quickly promoted to the rank of tribune in the imperial guard, and then, it would appear, to that of prefect. Returning to Cappadocia after a victorious campaign and passing through the region of Attalia in Pamphylia, he freed the king s daughter, who had been left at the mercy of a dangerous dragon, and killed the beast with a divine strength that he was given by his faith. Marvelling at this demonstration of the strength given by Christ to His faithful ones against the forces of evil, the local pagans were all converted to Christianity. At the time of the Great Persecution unleashed by Diocletian (c. 304), when the Emperor had summoned all the Eastern governors to Nicomedia to make them privy to his decrees against the Christians, Saint George, sensing that the moment had come for him to make public confession of Christ, gave all his goods away to the poor, freed his slaves and went to court. He appeared in the midst of the assembly and reproached the sovereign for unjustly shedding the innocent blood of Christians. Diocletian in stupefaction ordered his second-in-command Magnentius to interrogate this insolent young man about his faith. George replied that it was because he believed in Christ the true God that he had come without fear to reproach them. Having recovered from his amazement, the Emperor, fearing a tumult among those present, offered to heap honors on the Saint on condition that he sacrifice to the gods of the Empire. George replied: Your reign will become corrupt and will quickly disappear at no gain to you; but those who offer a sacrifice of praise to the King of Heaven will reign with Him for all eternity! At the sovereign s orders, the guards beat the Saint on the stomach with their lances. His blood flowed down but, at the first blows, their weapons became twisted as thought they were made of some soft material. Christ s soldier was then thrown into prison with a heavy stone on his breast. The next day, he appeared once more before the tyrant and showed the same firmness. They therefore tied him to a wheel suspended over sharp instruments, so that, when the wheel was turned, the Saint s body would gradually be cut to pieces. Overcoming the pain with his overflowing love for God, Saint George unceasingly gave thanks to God. A voice was then heard from heaven, saying: Fear nothing, George; I am with you! And a white clad angel more resplendent than the sun descended to loose him and heal his wounds. When he appeared safe and sound before the Emperor, two officers of the guard, Anatolius and Protoleon, confessed Christ with loud voices. They were beheaded at once. The Empress Alexandra (April 21) also declared herself to be a Christian, but Magnentius constrained her to withdraw to the palace. They then threw the Saint into a ditch filled with quicklime; but, like the Three Young men in the Babylonian furnace, he emerged unharmed after three days, greeted by the crowd with the cry, Great is George s God! The Emperor, still remaining insensible before all these demonstrations of Christ s power, ordered that the martyr be forced to walk in shoes studded with red-hot nails. Run, George, towards the object of our desire! said the Saint, invoking the Lord s help. And once again he presented himself, whole and radiant with grace, before the tyrant. By the grace of God, he also escaped a poison prepared by a sorcerer called Athanasius. When the latter and those of his sort were still incredulous and reckoned that George was using magical arts, he, at their request, raised a dead man who had been buried for three hundred years. The man prostrated before the Saint and, declaring that he had been wrested from hell at George s prayers, he confessed Christ. The defeated sorcerer then fell at the feet of the servant of God and, in his turn, proclaimed the true Faith. Diocletian ordered that Athanasius and the resurrected man be beheaded without delay. Not a few of those who had come to believe in Christ as a result of Saint George s miracles found the means to visit him in prison, in order to be instructed in the truths of the Gospel or to receive the healing of their ills. The Saint had compassion on the sufferings of each of them, and even restored to life a bull belonging to a peasant called Glycerius, who was then arrested and beheaded without any sort of trial. The next day, Diocletian had George appear in the Temple of Apollo before a fairly large crowd. Pretending that he intended to offer sacrifice, the Martyr went into the temple and confronted the idol, making the sign of the Cross. The demons that lived in the idol then confessed in terror that Christ alone is the true God, and they escaped with a great hubbub, leaving the inert statues to fall to the ground. The priests and the pagans then drove the Saint out with loud cries and took him back to the palace. Attracted by the tumult, Empress Alexandra came out and forced her way through the crowd, crying out: God of George, come to my aid!, and she fell at the Saint s feet. Unable any longer to contain his fury, the tyrant, whose heart was hardened as Pharaoh s had been of old, ordered that they both be beheaded. But, some time before the execution, Alexandra peacefully gave her soul into God s hands in prison. When the day arrived, Saint George went to the place of execution followed by a large crowd. He gave thanks to God for His benefits, and, begging His help for all those who would trustingly invoke his intercession throughout the centuries, bent his neck under the sword and went to carry off the trophies of eternal glory. Carrying out the Saint s desire, his servant took his precious relics back to his country, to Lydda (Diospolis) in Palestine, where innumerable miracles were worked in the great church that was built in his honor. The veneration of Saint George enjoyed enormous popularity throughout the Christian world, both East and West. He was chosen to be the protector of countries like Georgia and England; thousands of churches have been dedicated to him and every Christian soul sees in him the incarnation of the virtues of valor, patience in affliction and trust in the help of grace that Christ, the Leader in battle, has enjoined on all the soldiers enrolled in His army of devotion. Orthodox Christian Celebration of the Feast of Saint George The feast and commemoration of Saint George is celebrated with the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom which is conducted on the morning of the feast and preceded by a Matins (Orthros) service. A Great Vespers may be conducted on the evening before the day of the Feast. If the Feast of Saint George occurs during Great Lent or Holy Week, the feast is transposed to the Monday after Pascha, the Monday of Bright Week. This is done not only because the Divine Liturgy is not conducted on the weekdays of Lent, but also because many of the hymns of the Feast are Paschal in nature. This is due to the fact that under the Old Calendar, this feast never occurred before the annual celebration of Pascha. Scripture readings for the Feast of Saint George are: At the Orthros (Matins): Luke 21: At the Divine Liturgy: Acts 12:1-11; John 15:17-16:2 (If the Feast is transposed to the Monday of Bright Week, the Gospel reading will be of the day, John 1:18-28). Hymns of the Saint Apolytikion: Fourth Tone Liberator of captives, defender of the poor, physician of the sick, and champion of kings, O trophy-bearer, Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved. Kontakion: Fourth Tone Cultivated by God, you became manifest as an honorable tiller gathering for yourself the sheaves of virtue. For you sowed with tears but reaped with gladness; in the contest you competed with your blood and came away with Christ. By your intercessions, O Holy One, all are granted forgiveness of sins. Adapted from The Synaxarion: The Lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church, Vol. 4, compiled by Hieromonk Makarios of Simonos Petra and translated from the French by Mother Maria Rule and Mother Joanna Burton (Chalkidike, Greece: Holy Convent of the Annunciation of Our Lady, 2003) pp
