BRETHREN, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me." Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. 9 ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH AND PRIMATES OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH READY TO BEGIN DELIBERATIONS OF THE HOLY AND GREAT COUNCIL IN CRETE CHANIA, Crete The people, the island and the Church of Crete welcomed warmly His-All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew who arrived in Chania International Airport yesterday, June 15 to convene the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church, which will take place June At hand for the welcome were His Eminence Archbishop Irinaios of Crete, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Yiannis Amanatidis, the Governor of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis, the Chief of Protocol Ambassador Aghi Balta, high ranking officers of the Armed Forces, local officials and clergy. Upon his arrival the Ecumenical Patriarch expressed his joy of fulfillment of our historical mission and urged the Orthodox Church across the world to join him. The Holy and Great Council, said His-All Holiness, is our sacred mission, and although the joy of the historic events are clouded by the decision of some churches not to attend, the responsibility for their decision lies with those same churches and their Primates, since, just five months ago, at the Synaxis of the Orthodox Primates in Geneva, we made a decision and put our signatures to it, that we should come to Crete in June and realize this vision held over many years, which all our churches cherish, to declare and proclaim the unity of our Orthodox Church, and to examine and reach a common resolution of the problems that are of concern to the Orthodox world. Later in the afternoon, the Ecumenical Patriarch visited the Orthodox Academy of Crete, greeted the staff and toured the site and facilities where the Holy and Great Council will be held. Crete welcomes you, Your All-Holiness, offering its aromatic herbs dictamnus and thyme, prays for the unity of Orthodoxy and asks for your blessing, said a verse of the traditional Cretan song at the dinner offered by the local hierarch, His Eminence Metropolitan Amphilochios of Kissamos and Selinou. Responding to the welcome, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew spoke of the Cretan hospitality, geniality and nobility and said that Crete welcomes and embraces all Orthodox including those who decided not to come. Today, June 16, at the Nautical Museum of Crete in Chania, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Nikos Kotzias hosted an official welcome dinner for the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Primates of the Orthodox Church who arrived in Crete the last two days. Mr. Kotzias in his greeting assured his guests that The Hellenic State will contribute in every way, focused on unity and love, for the caring of the people and the cooperation of the Orthodox Churches, all the churches and secular people. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in his response spoke of the role of Orthodoxy in the 21st century. The Orthodox Church is the ark of the pure Christian tradition that offers support and consolation, because Orthodoxy managed to maintain even today the mystical experience and the experience of personal communion with the personal God despite the explosive technological and scientific evolution, said His All-Holiness. Speaking about the Holy and Great Council, the Ecumenical Patriarch said, [the Council] is of great importance, because it shall offer the opportunity for the unified voice of Orthodoxy to be expressed and shall deliver a single message of true faith, real hope and peaceful reconciliation to our world that is in conflict.

10 June 4, 2016 WW II Dedication Day This bell was donated by John G. Chipas in 1946 to the American Legion Post 424. It was used at the meetings. John Pagonis was the last Post Adjutant that held the bell. His family later turned it over to the church. Peter Leasca took possession of it as the Veterans Administrator for the St. Spyridon community and a past 2nd Vice Commander of the American Legion Post 424. The Post was later retired and disbanded. Also, the American Legion's cash was donated to the church. ($7,000 +) IPeter Leasca turned it over to Fr. Dimitri who placed it in the 100 Year Time Capsule. The next time someone will see this American Legion Post 424 Bell will be in June 6, 2016 when I comes out of the time capsule. OMG whose going to be around? It is sad to say, but this now ends our World War II period because we only have a few able body vets left.dit is in the rear view mirror. PS Note of interest. John Pagonis's brother in law was Bishop Olympos (Macris) of Los Angelis and former priest in Worcester. He was also at the Pomfret Seminary as a teacher before the seminary was transferred to Brookline.

Your Stewardship contributions, financial and through volunteerism, helps the mission of our church to humbly serve Christ in order to spread His message. Become involved in one of the many ministries of our Cathedral, and become a leader in representing our Greek Orthodox faith through good works.
