10 [ Seven of the above dissertations/theses have been published as books by publishers, specializing in scholarly editions (Bredenkamp (D), Matzukis (D), Vergitsis (MA), Vlachopoulou (MA), Petroyianni (MA and D), Zacharopoulou (MA)), while numerous articles resulting from the above research have been published ]. I was and I am external examiner for M.A. and Ph.D. dissertations and theses in the Universities of Pretoria, Witwatersrand, Unisa, Cape Town and the HSRC. At present an important number of post-graduate students are enrolled in M.A. and D. research. 1.I was and I am very much involved in student supervision of research MA and D students. This research, in which post-graduate students have participated and/or are still involved, is centred around a number of postgraduate research programmes on Afro-Byzantine and Neo-Hellenic themes. The projects were/ are done under my direction with the collaboration of Dr T. Sansaridou-Hendrickx. These are the programmes: * The teaching of (Post)-Byzantine and Modern Greek culture and language: problems with ethnicity, minorities and 'racism'; Greek as a foreign language; the image of Greece; the use and value of manuals. *Themes of 19 th and 20 th Century Modern Greek History: purely historic themes; themes related to history of Greek education. *Aspects of the Byzantine Empire: teaching of Byzantine civilisation; Byz. History; Fathers of Greek Church; icons. *Aspects of the Ottoman Empire: language chaos; tsiflikia and 0ttoman institutions in Greece. This project is partly a result of my completed study of the Ottoman Missak[ian] Archives. *Aspects of Modern Greek literature and oral traditions: this programme also relates to my research on the Frankokratia and Greek literature in Africa. *Nubia, Axum and Greco-Ethiopian History : Ancient Axum; Medieval Nubia; Africa according to Kosmas Indicopleustes; Greek presence in Ethiopia. 2. Co-operative research initiative with societal organisation: the organisation of the S.African Hellenic Archive at UJ s Library. This project is done in collaboration with the Lyceum of Greek Women and the Greek Community. The archives are established, catalogued and studied under my direct supervision (and this of Dr Thekla Sansaridou-Hendrickx). Post-graduate students have already used them as sources for their dissertations, and several dissertations have been completed on topics, related to these Archives. 11. Afro-Hellenica *My research will be continued, founded on the results of my completed research on Byzantium and East Africa, while important new research will also be introduced: *study of new or unknown African sources on Byzantium (e.g. Coptic, Nubian, Swahili, Ethiopian); esp. preparation of an edition of the documents relating to the Christian rulers of Nubia. * preparation of a translation and/or commentary of the Epic of Herakleios. References will be made to other epic sources such as the Katirifu, Wadi Sese-bani and Miqdad & Mayasa. * the "African" Alexander the Great: Alexander in African medieval and post-medieval traditions Legends, epic stories, and artwork (e.g. icons) from diverse African countries, such as the Arab North, Sudan, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Kenya, present a unique Alexander the Great, different from the Greek reality and the Macedonian prototype * the Lemba heritage s connections with medieval Ethiopian and Swahili traditions. * The organisation of the S.A. Hellenic Archives in the U.J. Library (and the publication of a catalogue) will be continued. 2. International edition project of Encyclopaedic Prosopographic Lexicon of Byzantine History and Civilisation (EPLBHC) The scope of the EPLBHC as a compendium of Byzantine and relevant medieval prosopography is precise and well defined. All entries concern persons (prosopa) who played an important role or had a significant impact on Byzantine History or Civilization, both directly or indirectly. The chronological perimeters lato sensu range between A.D. ca 300 to A.D. ca The EPLBHC thus seeks to spell out for ready consultation a scholarly founded overview of what it takes to be conversant with Byzantine history and civilization, with detailed bibliographies of primary sources and secondary works. With that in mind, not only Byzantines/ medieval Greeks will be mentioned or discussed in this edition, but also persons, belonging to various nations and peoples (western European, Scandinavian, Slavonic, Asian or African) that were actors on the Byzantine historical and cultural scene. Furthermore, we attempt to cover all fields that contribute to the Byzantine mosaic: hagiology and hagiography; religion, monasticism and theology; archaeology, architecture and arts; geography, topography and periphereia; history, historiography and chronography; sciences and medicines; music and hymnography; literature, philology and language; law and institutions; economy and society; philosophy and intellectualism; politics, diplomacy and the military; numismatics and sigillography. The Afro-Byzantina aspect is included in the EPLBHC. This specialised encyclopaedic lexicon is a new international undertaking in the field of Byzantine and medieval studies. Further research will be done on the Latin occupation of Byzantium after the 4 th Crusade and the establishment of Frankish States in the Byzantine territory after Special attention will be given to the study of the so-called Latin Montferrat Kingdom of Thessaloniki, with references to the

19 Frankish Morea. Such a study (as a whole) does not exist, and relatively little research has been done on the institutions and socio-political and military history of this kingdom. The project will be done in collaboration with academics from Greece (Athens, Thessaloniki, Aegean).
