4 EPISTLE READING The Reading is from Acts of the Apostles 5:12-20 Great is our Lord, and great is his power. Verse: Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good. IN THOSE DAYS, many signs and wonders were done among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. But the high priest rose up and all who were with him, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the common prison. 5 GOSPEL READING The Reading is from the Gospel of John 20:19-31 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe." Eight days later, His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to Him: "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. 6 GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS Prosphora needed: Throughout the year there is a great need for Prosphora (the bread prepared for use in the Divine Liturgy.) It is especially nice for the priest to have freshly baked prosphora. If you would like to make the offering of prosphora, please know that Fr. Peter must have the bread before Orthros begins (which is at 8:45 am) or the afternoon or evening before the Liturgy. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the Parish office. Communion wine as a church donation: Communion wine is always needed by the church. If you would like to make a donation of wine, the following wines are preferred: St. John Commandaria (of Cyprus), Mavrodaphne, or Manischewitz Concord Grape. Help us keep the vigil lamps burning bright: Olive oil is a perpetual need for the church in order to keep the vigil lamps or καντήλια (kandilia) burning bright. If you would like to donate olive oil, you may bring it to the Parish office at any time throughout the year. SHOP-RITE or GIANT shoppers: We have enrolled in their Gift Card Program and the gift cards are on sale during coffee hour. If you are interested, please see Alexis Witt. Register Tapes: Don t forget to save your Shop-Rite register tapes. We can only use receipts from any of the ten Brown s stores located in: Bensalem PA, East Norriton, PA, Fairless Hills PA, Cheltenham, PA and in Philadelphia, PA, on Island Ave., Oregon Ave., 52 nd & Parkside, Haverford Ave., and Ridge Ave. in the Roxborough section. 9 Church Beautification Update April 19, 2015 We continue to focus on meeting our mortgage obligations (please see below for the latest) as well as to take care of buildings and grounds. We are pleased to let you know that we recently negotiated a lower mortgage rate, which will allow us to put more money into the principal payment and help speed up the payoff of our mortgage. We are also continuing the process of beautifying the church. God bless the recent anonymous donor for the Bishops throne. In addition, a non-parishioner has donated $17,000 to sponsor the candle stands! God bless so many stewards and friends who have taken great interest in the beautification of His house!! Many sponsorships are still available for both iconography and the furnishings. Please check out the exhibit next door. As you ve probably noticed, we have new Narthex furnishings. They were carved by the world-renowned artisans at S. Kavroulakis Company of Chania, Crete, the same firm that carved our beautiful icon screen and other artifacts. This beautiful furniture now greets everyone who enters our church! Some of these items are still available for sponsorship. We have installed a donor plaque to acknowledge those who have contributed to make our new church and its decoration possible. You can see the framework in the Narthex. Please note that the white color is the primer. Our iconographer, Dr. George Kordis may return for a brief visit later this year to decorate the donor plaque and apply a protective varnish to the icons on the icon screen and other items. We have posted a draft of the names that will be listed on the plaque in the Fr. John Limberakis Cultural Center. Please double check your name and listing to make sure it is accurate. If you have questions or concerns, please see any Parish Council member. St. Sophia Church Mortgage Mortgage balance as of 3/31/2015 is $1,370,000. We recently negotiated a lower rate with QNB Bank, which will lower our payment by $1,000/month. Stewardship Update April 19, 2015 Xristos Anesti! Christ is Risen! Last Sunday we celebrated Christ s triumphant Resurrection. He has defeated death and has given much to save all of mankind. It was wonderful to see so many familiar and new faces join us throughout Holy Week and Easter as we light candles to mark the Resurrection and proclaim together Christ is Risen! As we mark Pascha, now is a most appropriate time to consider God s many blessings upon us and how we can live better Orthodox lives. Throughout the year, and especially during the Lenten and Easter season, God is calling each and every one of us! Are you listening?? As Stewards of the faith, it is important that we thank God for His blessings by giving of our time, in addition to talents and treasure. All year and especially during the Paschal season-- we should all make time to come to church! And not just for adults but for children too. Let us set a good example for the future of our faith and heritage. Worshipping together helps to refresh all of us spiritually each week as we prepare to face the following week of earthly demands. Everyone seems very busy these days. But let s make sure we are scheduling time for God, too! Our 2015 Stewardship Program is off to a great start. Thank you to everyone who has already returned their 2015 Pledge Card. If you have not yet returned your Pledge Card please do so today. As a busy parish, there are plenty of opportunities for all of us to get involved by giving of our time and talents to support His work.
