H O L Y T R I N I T Y C A T H E D R A L 2017 EPIPHANY CELEBRATION Dove Release - Cross Retrieval Cathedral Family Luncheon The 2017 Epiphany Celebration will take place today, Sunday, January 8, Orthros and Divine Liturgy will be followed by the Blessing of the Waters, Dove Release, and Cross Retrieval along the banks of Bayou St. John. Then, all attendees are invited to the gymnasium for the Cathedral Family Luncheon. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for youth with children 6 and under free. Please see Kalli Vassilas Grass to purchase tickets, which will be sold at the door in the Coffee Room. FAMILY GRAS SLATED JANUARY 29 The 2nd Annual Family Gras will take place in the gymnasium on Sunday, January 29, after church services. All youth are asked to bring pre-made Mardi Gras floats, which will be used as table centerpieces. These will be judged, and participants will receive certificates and a small token of appreciation. A New Orleans style potluck buffet will be served. Parishioners of all ages are invited, so mark your calendars for this fun community gathering. HOUSE BLESSINGS To have your home and/or business blessed, fill out the enclosed form and return it to the Cathedral office as soon as possible. Please DO NOT OR CALL for an appointment. Instead, submit the form, denoting a day and time that is convenient for you, and the office will call to confirm the appointed schedule for the blessing. Father George would like to bless as many homes as possible and for this reason wishes to adhere to a tight schedule. He kindly asks that you not expect him to stay for a meal and thanks you in advance for understanding. SEEKING SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY SPONSORS The Parish Council seeks to continue the Sunday Fellowship Ministry and asks volunteers to consider sponsoring refreshments on Sundays in a particular month. A form requesting monthly coffee hour sponsorships for 2017 is enclosed. The program is an effort to encourage greater fellowship among parishioners by asking families, individuals or groups to provide refreshments after church services. 2 PHILOPTOCHOS "APOKRIATIKO" SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON Seniors are invited to the next Senior Citizens Luncheon on Thursday, January 19, at 11:30 am in the Coffee Room. The luncheon is sponsored by Debbie and Vasili Funti in memory of her grandparents, Mary and Pete Menutes, and by Vange Malachias in memory of her husband, Bill Malachias. Philoptochos thanks them for their support and looks forward to having all seniors attend this Mardi Gras "Apokriatiko" themed gathering. Plan now to come and enjoy a delicious meal and have fun playing bingo. ARE YOU A MEMBER OF PHILOPTOCHOS? With renewed enthusiasm toward the mission of Philoptochos, the chapter begins its membership drive for All ladies are invited to become proud members in the organization, attend meetings, and join in helping Philoptochos help others. You would have the opportunity to offer your time, talent, and treasure to meeting the needs of the church and local parish families and to serving the greater community. There are teams of women, who visit the sick and the elderly, who care for the Cathedral, who serve at Ozanam Inn, who organize events and fundraisers, and who volunteer in so many ways throughout the community. The numerous fundraisers benefit local and national causes that are worthy of your support. Philoptochos responds in times of crisis as with the financial struggles in Greece or when a natural disaster occurs in all parts of the world. ANNUAL CUTTING OF THE VASILOPITA Philoptochos will hold its annual Cutting of the Vasilopita after Divine Liturgy next SUNDAY, JANUARY 15. Similarly, other Philoptochos chapters across the Archdiocese host Vasilopita events in honor of Saint Basil the Great to benefit Saint Basil Academy in Garrison, New York. One of the most beautiful and inspiring traditions of the Greek Orthodox Church is the observance of Vasilopita in Saint Basil s honor. A most wise and compassionate clergyman, Saint Basil was the first person in history to establish a home for children. His feast day combines the cheer and happiness of the New Year with the glory of the birth of Christ and the Epiphany into what is known in the Orthodox Church as the Vasilopita Observance, symbolizing the joy of life everlasting. After presentation of the Vasilopita in church, Philoptochos members invite all parishioners to receive a piece of Saint Basil s bread at the reception in the Coffee Room. REGULAR GENERAL ASSEMBLY The first 2017 General Assembly will be held in the Hellenic Cultural Center SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2017, immediately following Divine Liturgy. The agenda will include discussion and vote on the Proposed Budget for 2017, as well as regular business items. All members in Good Standing are encouraged to attend. Message from His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta My Beloved Ones, I would like to begin by wishing all of you (clergyman, monastics, and laymen) a New Year full of happiness and prosperity. With the celebration of the Feast of Epiphany, or Theophany, we close the festive twelve day Nativity period, which included the Circumcision and the Naming of our Lord Jesus Christ on January 1. The Feast of Epiphany is followed by the celebration of the Forerunner, John the Baptist, on January 7. In Orthodox icons, the iconographer s goal is to teach the viewer a Biblical lesson through symbols. In the Epiphany icon we see at the top the first person of the Holy Trinity, God the Father, Who is depicted either by face, or more often, as radiance. When the Father is shown as radiance, in the middle of this light is the Holy Spirit, the second person of the Holy Trinity, appearing as a dove, descending from the Heavens. The third person of the Holy Trinity, Jesus Christ, is, of course, depicted as standing in the Jordan River, waiting for the blessing of St. John. We are all aware, of course, that St. John did not want to baptize Him because John knew that He was the Son of God. However, because Jesus asked out of necessity to fulfill righteousness, we see John preparing to baptize Jesus with his right hand and with his left hand in a position of supplication, as he prays to God for his salvation. On the other side of the river, Angels are usually shown holding cloths, much like today s sponsors wait for children to emerge from the baptismal font and then enter as Christians into the Church. The figure of Christ is usually shown to be naked, apart from a cloth around His waist. This nakedness symbolizes His humanity, which he put on for us in order to uplift us. My brothers and sisters, this is the whole meaning of this holiday season, from Christmas all the way through Theophany: Christ, the Son of God, the Logos, humbled Himself to help us and save us from the tyranny of the Devil, out of the love that God has for humanity. I pray that we may all have a spiritually uplifting Theophany as we reflect upon Christ s humility, the glory of the Holy Trinity, and all the good things we have learned and experienced in this Christmas season. +ALEXIOS Metropolitan of Atlanta

THE EPISTLE Ephesians 4:7-13 Save, O Lord your people and bless your inheritance. To you, O Lord, have I cried, O my God. BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. THE GOSPEL Matthew 4:12-17 At that time, Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
