The 2nd Annual Family Gras will take place in the gymnasium today, Sunday, January 29, after church services. All youth were asked to bring pre-made Mardi Gras floats that will serve as table centerpieces. These will be judged, and participants will receive certificates and a small token of appreciation. A New Orleans style potluck buffet will be served. Parishioners of all ages are invited to this fun community gathering. GOYA VOLLEYBALL Although Holy Trinity youth soccer will not begin until March, GOYA volleyball began on Friday, January 27, with an indoor practice session. The volleyball gatherings, scheduled in the gymnasium on Friday evenings at 6:00 pm, are a fun, no-pressure opportunity to learn to play the game, as well as to get to know each other better. It is for players of all levels - from beginners to intermediate. Coach Kalli Grass and GOYA Advisor Donna Venturatos encourage GOYANS to give it a try or just come hang out, if you really do not wish to play! They also hope to engage GOYA parents in preparing a light meal of fasting foods following some of the Friday night practices. The informal gatherings promise to be fun for all! Please mark your calendar and plan to attend. SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON The next senior citizens luncheon will take place on Thursday, February 9, at 11:30 am in the Coffee Room. Special thanks are extended to Georgia and George Zervoudis for sponsoring the luncheon. Plans are now underway for John Koniditsiotis to prepare a delicious meal. Eighty percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. SELF DEFENSE AWARENESS CLASS The Safety and Security Committee has set up a free SELF-DEFENSE AWARENESS CLASS at the Hellenic Cultural Center on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2017, from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm for those interested in learning self defense methods and ways to be better prepared in Personal Safety and Protection methods. All adult and student parishioners 16 years of age or older are welcome to attend this class. No equipment is needed; just wear comfortable casual clothing. Please register in advance by contacting Barbara Stavis Wolf at or hellenic2004@yahoo.com. Attendance is limited, so please register early. Thank you to the Safety and Security Committee for scheduling this class with a qualified instructor, who is donating his time to Holy Trinity for this service. Message from Father George ENCOURAGED TO LIVE A HOLY LIFE In today s Epistle reading, II Corinthians 6:16-18, 7:1, the Holy Apostle Paul teaches the Corinthian Christians. In the Orthodox Study Bible this section is subtitled A Plea for Holiness. The problem that existed in Corinth was not too different than what we face in our current society in this country. The people of ancient Corinth were bombarded by false religions and teachings that were contrary to a life in Christ. And, so, Saint Paul was constantly preaching and teaching the message of repentance changing from old and sinful ways and recognizing that as Christians there was a new higher calling that needed to be recognized, if they were to continue to consider themselves Christian. The new higher calling is a new way of life that is influenced by the life and teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ. An interesting parallel is discussed in the following text: Through Paul's personal ministry and his letters, a foundation in Christ had been laid for a much beloved, if wayward, church. Because it was a culture obsessed with wine, women, sports, entertainment, song, and moneymaking, Corinth is one of the most accessible bridges between the Roman world of the first century and our day. We do well to refrain from being critical of Corinth lest we feel self-satisfied and in need of nothing. We should ponder the practical lessons of Corinth, for in it we see a distant mirror of our own troubled days. (Herald Magazine Jan/Feb 2002) Saint Paul would encourage us to be less motivated and distracted by the life of our society just as he encouraged the ancient Corinthians. He would also encourage us to recognize that God is within us, and it is imperative that our lives reflect this understanding. He writes in the final line from the Epistle reading: let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. When we recognize that truly God is in us, then we need to make ourselves an honorable vessel of our great God. It is not me who is great. But, it is God Who is great, and He is in me. So, as we prepare for the beginning of Great Lent in just a few weeks, may we focus on the teaching of Saint Paul to cleanse and change ourselves through the Sacrament of Confession and through repentance. As we pursue this process, we will be responding to the Plea for Holiness.

BRETHREN, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. THE GOSPEL Matthew 15:21-28 At that time, Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children s bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master s table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly.
