All youth are asked to bring pre-made Mardi Gras floats, which will be used as table centerpieces. These will be judged, and participants will receive certificates and a small token of appreciation. A New Orleans style potluck buffet will be served. Parishioners of all ages are invited, so mark your calendars for this fun community gathering. SEEKING SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY SPONSORS The Parish Council seeks to continue the Sunday Fellowship Ministry and asks volunteers to consider sponsoring refreshments on Sundays in a particular month. A form requesting monthly coffee hour sponsorships for 2017 is available in the Narthex. The program is an effort to encourage greater fellowship among parishioners by asking families, individuals, or groups to provide refreshments after church services. For more information, call Maria Anastasiou at SELF DEFENSE AWARENESS CLASS The Safety and Security Committee has set up a free SELF-DEFENSE AWARENESS CLASS at the Hellenic Cultural Center on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2017, from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm for those interested in learning self defense methods and ways to be better prepared in Personal Safety and Protection methods. All adult and student parishioners 16 years of age or older are welcome to attend this class. No equipment is needed; just wear comfortable casual clothing. REGULAR GENERAL ASSEMBLY The first 2017 General Assembly will be held in the Hellenic Cultural Center today, SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2017, immediately following Divine Liturgy. The agenda will include discussion and vote on the Proposed Budget for 2017, as well as regular business items. All members in Good Standing are encouraged to attend. SAINT ANASTASIUS was initially a Persian soldier, who heard the report of the miracles associated with the Precious Cross when it was taken in 614 with the capture of Jerusalem by the king of Persia, Chosroes II. Perplexed that an instrument of torture was highly honored by the Christians, he longed to learn their Faith and diligently sought out instruction. In time he was baptized and became a monk. As he studied the saints and the holy martyrs, he prayed to be worthy of a martyr's end like unto theirs. He left his monastery, encountered certain Persian Magi at Caesarea, and rebuked their delusion. Brought before the Persian ruler, he was questioned, beaten, and imprisoned. After many tortures, he was hanged up by one hand, strangled with a noose, and beheaded. Message from His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta SAINT PAUL INSTRUCTS TIMOTHY AND US As Christians we are encouraged to spend time at home reading our Bibles. Each day we have the opportunity to follow the Church s scriptural lectionary by reading the daily readings. We can find the daily readings in a number of places. They are in the small pamphlet that is mailed to stewards with their Church calendar, and they can be found on each day of the calendar that was sent out. For those of you who use the internet, the Archdiocese website has a number of places to find the daily Scriptural readings. And, then for those of you who use smart phones, you can download an App to access the daily readings as well. As we spend time with our Bibles, we come across texts such as this morning's Epistle reading from the Holy Apostle Paul to Timothy. Today s reading focuses on instructing Timothy to pastor a Christian community. The laying on of hands that is referenced suggests that Timothy, who was brought into the Christian Faith by Saint Paul, is being prepared to go out into the missionary field to assist Saint Paul and the Church in sharing the Good News of the Resurrection of our Lord and to bring people to Christ for the purpose of their Salvation. Although the instructions were originally intended for Timothy and his ministry in the mission field, as Christians we can all gain valuable insight into what is expected of each of us. Look at the sentence from verse 4:12: Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Saint Paul was preparing Timothy to share the message of Christ crucified and resurrected to the people as their preacher, teacher, and leader, but he was a little young. Timothy was instructed to be an ethical, Christian man providing the Godly example in what he said, what he did, and how he conducted his life. There is a positive message in this for us as well. In all that we do, follow Saint Paul s instructions to Timothy in your life. As Timothy was encouraged to be a man of God expressing through his life: Love, Faith, and Purity, we also are encouraged to be men and women of God by incorporating these characteristics in our lives: Love, Faith, and Purity.

Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. THE GOSPEL Luke 19:1-10 At that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.
