PANAGIA ROOF TILE CAMPAIGN DEADLINE THIS FRIDAY The Panagia Roof Tile Champaign deadline was extended to this Friday, July 21, If you are interested in participating in this project, please fill out a form, which is available in the Narthex, and submit it to the Cathedral office. As a reminder, His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios asks that each family give the names of their loved ones, living and deceased, to be sealed in the Holy Table during consecration and prayed for during each service held in the Chapel forever. When submitting names, please consider a sponsorship of $30 or more, as you are able, to the completion of the Panagia Chapel's roof. Message from Metropolitan Alexios My Beloved Ones, Together, we are all members of an institution, one which we understand to be God s Holy Orthodox Church, and therefore, as Saint Paul says, we are building up the Body of Christ. This is certainly a blessing, but one that comes with obligations and responsibilities. In this Sunday s Gospel, Christ famously tells His followers, You are the light of the world. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:14; 16). Here, our Lord clearly gives us our sense of responsibility, if we are to truly be considered members of His Body. This statement is not simply a philosophical theory but a statement of practical action. We must be alert to ourselves and our actions so that in everything we do, we bring glory to His Holy Name. This Sunday is also a special Sunday as our Church has chosen to commemorate the Holy Fathers, who participated in Seven Ecumenical Councils. In particular, I think of the Council of Chalcedon in 451, which was conveyed to address an issue of great confusion to the people: namely, the Person of Jesus Christ. The decision of the Synod affirmed our understanding that Christ has two natures and that He is both fully God and fully Man. Christ, Who as God willingly took on flesh to dwell among us, practiced what He preached. He Himself glorified the Father through His own good works: healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and even raising the dead during His earthly life and ministry. As both God and Man, Jesus Christ did not simply end His lesson by proclaiming us to be the light of the world. He then admonishes His followers to keep the Commandments and the Law, which God gave to help the people live righteously. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but, he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:17-19). My Brothers and Sisters, this is the reason we have the Church as both an institution and as the Body of Christ. The Church guides us towards closeness with God, helping us to keep His Word, and glorifying Him through our thoughts and deeds. By becoming closer to Him, we live, as Saint Paul says, in the hope and belief that we too will be resurrected as our Lord has resurrected. I wish for all of you to receive inspiration from Above, along with health of soul and body, as well as the wisdom to not only assist our family and friends, but also to watch ourselves. 2 COMMUNITY CALENDAR OF EVENTS DUE AUGUST 1 Each Holy Trinity organization president and committee head is asked to prepare a calendar of events that includes activities from August 2017 through December 2018 and to please submit the information to the Cathedral office no later than TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, The various calendars will be consolidated and presented to the community. Of course, schedules are always a work in progress and changes are constant. Still, it is important to prepare a community calendar with the proposed events posted well in advance. Please your information to Vickie@holytrinitycathedral.org as soon as possible. Planning committees are meeting in August to formulate programs for the upcoming year. In advance, thank you for your assistance and cooperation. PHILOPTOCHOS BACK TO SCHOOL COLLECTION OF SCHOOL SUPPLIES Very soon local schools will begin classes. All Philoptochos and community members are asked to help support those less fortunate by donating school supplies such as spiral note books or marble covered bound note books, loose leaf paper, crayons, #2 pencils, and pink erasers. Unfortunately, there will be many children unable to afford the required supplies. Numerous area stores are beginning to offer sales of school supplies. A collection box will be placed in the Coffee Room for your donations. Please place your donations in the bin and help Philoptochos members help students. Thank you for your support! GARAGE SALE Philoptochos is having a Garage Sale on Saturday, October 7, and Sunday, October 8! You are asked to look in your home, closets, cabinets, and garage for furniture or items that you no longer use or want including clothing, shoes, small appliances, houseware, and much more. Please donate these to the Garage Sale. Items can be brought to the community center beginning on Sunday, September 24, through Friday, October 6. Please DO NOT bring any items to the center prior to these dates. With everyone s assistance and support, this fundraiser will help Philoptochos continue in their philanthropic mission. SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL AND YOUTH HYMNOLOGY STAFF MEETING TODAY All Sunday Church School and Youth Hymnology teachers and assistants are reminded to attend the staff meeting today, Sunday, July 16, in the boardroom after church services and the memorial reception. COMPREHENSIVE REGISTRATION FORMS DUE AUGUST 1 The Comprehensive Registration Form that was mailed in the July issue of The Flame must be completed and submitted to the Cathedral office no later than August 1, Parishioners are asked to take a few minutes and complete the form, which encompasses all community programs for adults and youth. PARAKLESIS (SUPPLICATION) CANON TO THE THEOTOKOS There are two forms of the Paraklesis Canon to the Theotokos: the Small Paraklesis, which was composed by Theosteriktos the Monk in the 9th century, and the Great Paraklesis. During the majority of the year, only the Small Paraklesis to the Theotokos is chanted. The typical parish uses the Small Paraklesis exclusively. The reason these services are called Paraklesis (Supplication) is because the faithful gather to supplicate the Theotokos to intercede on their behalf to her Son and our God for our salvation and for the relief of anything that burdens and ails us. They are the prayers of suffering and hurting children addressed to their compassionate Mother, who is their only hope, protectress, and surety in time of need. TORPEDOGRASS TREATED DURING THE SUMMER There is no quick, efficient, easy, or permanent way to deal with Torpedograss. To address the problem in the beds behind the Cathedral sanctuary and beside the railed walkway on the bayou side of the property, Dimitri Vatakis treated the weeds this past week, and subsequent applications of the herbicide will be applied on a weekly basis until the matter is under control. Please know that the torpedograss eventually will turn brown and die but will not be removed until Labor Day in order to reap the most effective treatment results. Your patience and understanding during the long process is greatly appreciated.

I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
