St. Catherine the Great Marty of Alexandria ~ November 25th Saint Catherine, who was from Alexandria, was the daughter of Constas (or Cestus). She was an exceedingly beautiful maiden, most chaste, and illustrious in wealth, lineage, and learning. By her steadfast understanding, she utterly vanquished the passionate and unbridled soul of Maximinus, the tyrant of Alexandria; and by her eloquence, she stopped the mouths of the so-called philosophers who had been gathered to dispute with her. She was crowned with the crown of martyrdom in the year 305. Her holy relics were taken by Angels to the holy mountain of Sinai, where they were discovered many years later; the famous monastery of Saint Catherine was originally dedicated to the Holy Transfiguration of the Lord and the Burning Bush, but later was dedicated to Saint Catherine. According to the ancient usage, Saints Catherine and Mercurius were celebrated on the 24th of this month, whereas the holy Hieromartyrs Clement of Rome and Peter of Alexandria were celebrated on the 25th. The dates of the feasts of these Saints were interchanged at the request of the Church and Monastery of Mount Sinai, so that the festival of Saint Catherine, their patron, might be celebrated more festively together with the Apodosis of the Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos. The Slavic Churches, however, commemorate these Saints on their original dates. Ανακοινώσεις Στολισμός χριστουγεννιάτικου δέντρου: Το Σάββατο, 2 Δεκεμβρίου, στις 5.30 το απόγευμα, όπως κάθε χρόνο, τα παιδιά θα στολίσουν το χριστουγεννιάτικο δέντρο στον Ιερό μας Ναό. Όπως και τα προηγούμενα χρόνια, η προσπάθεια αυτή αποβλέπει στο να συγκεντρωθούν πιτζάμες για παιδιά των οποίων οι οικογένειες αντιμετωπίζουν φτώχεια, εθισμό, ενδοοικογενειακή βία και θέματα ψυχικής υγείας. Μέσω αυτού του προγράμματος, μπορείτε να συμβάλετε σε έναν «πιο ζεστό και πιο όμορφο ύπνο» για αυτά τα παιδιά. Οι πιτζάμες πρέπει να είναι για παιδιά ηλικίας 3 μηνών έως και 12 ετών και, επιπλέον, να είναι καινούργιες και αμεταχείριστες. Μπορείτε να αφήνετε τις πιτζάμες: τις Κυριακές στο χωλ του ναού, στο γραφείο του ιερού ναού κατά τη διάρκεια της εβδομάδας και στο Ελληνικό Σχολείο τα Σάββατα. Epistle of St. Paul s Letter to the Ephesians: 2: Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Verse: What shall I render to the Lord for all that he has given me? Brethren, Christ is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. National Youth Sunday - November 26th: All the youth of our parish are asked to meet at church at 10:00 a.m. for the Artoclasia prayers in commemoration of Saint Katherine, patron saint of the youth of our Metropolis. Laconian Association Artoclasia & Doxology November 26th - Artoclasia in commemoration of their patron saint St. Nikon the Repentant. A Doxology service in memory of the 118 men who were killed in Monothendri and all Laconians who fought and died for our country. Christmas Tree Decorating -December 2nd The annual Church Youth Groups family Christmas Tree decorating event will be held at the Church on Saturday, December 2nd at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Pot-Luck dinner in the Church Hall. Philoptochos - Pajama Drive Please help the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society for the 4th year provide new cozy pajamas to children in need in Ottawa and the Greater Ottawa Valley. Through the Pajama Drive, you are contributing to a warmer, more loving bedtime. The pajamas are to be new and unused, a complete set from newborn to 12 years old for boys and girls. Please feel free to drop off pajamas on Sundays in the Church Hall; during the week in the Church office; or on Saturdays at Greek School. No time to shop, please make a donation to Philoptochos for pajamas and we will buy them for you. Ένα πολύ σπουδαίο μάθημα Ένα νεαρό ζευγάρι μετακόμισε σε καινούρια γειτονιά. Την πρώτη μέρα μετά τη μετακόμισή τους και ενώ έτρωγαν το πρωινό τους, βλέποντας μια γειτόνισσα να απλώνει τα ρούχα της, λέει η σύζυγος: "Τα ρούχα που απλώνει η γειτόνισσα δεν είναι πολύ καθαρά. Φαίνεται πως δεν ξέρει πώς να πλύνει. Ίσως να πρέπει να χρησιμοποιήσει καλύτερο σαπούνι". Ο άντρας της δεν είπε τίποτα. Κάθε φορά που η γειτόνισσα άπλωνε τα ρούχα της, η νεαρή γυναίκα έκανε το ίδιο σχόλιο. Κανένα μήνα αργότερα, όμως, είδε με έκπληξη ότι τα ρούχα που άπλωνε η γειτόνισσα εκείνο το πρωινό ήταν πεντακάθαρα και, τότε, λέει στον άντρα της: "Κοίτα, έμαθε πώς να πλένει. Αναρωτιέμαι ποιος να της το έμαθε". Τότε ο σύζυγος απάντησε:"σηκώθηκα πρωί σήμερα και έπλυνα τα τζάμια από τα παράθυρά μας". Έτσι είναι και στη ζωή. Ό,τι βλέπουμε όταν παρατηρούμε του άλλους εξαρτάται από το πόσο καθαρό είναι το γυαλί του δικού μας παραθύρου μέσα από το οποίο κοιτάζουμε τους άλλους. «Το αυτό εις αλλήλους φρονούντες, μη τα υψηλά φρονούντες αλλά τοις ταπεινοίς συναπαγόμενοι. Μη γίνεσθε φρόνιμοι παρ' αυτοίς"» (Να έχετε ομόνοια μεταξύ σας. Μην είστε υπερήφανοι αλλά να συναναστρέφεστε και με τους απλοϊκούς χριστιανούς. 5 A Very Important Lesson A young couple moves into a new neighbourhood. The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbour hanging the wash outside. "That laundry is not very clean", she said. "She doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap." Her husband looked on, but remained silent. Every time her neighbour would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments. About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband: "Look, she has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this." The husband said, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows. And so it is with life. What we see when watching others depends on the purity of the window through which we look. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. - Romans 12:16 Announcements Christmas Baskets The Ladies of Philoptochos are organizing their annual Christmas Basket program for needy families in the Ottawa area. If you are able to contribute, please bring nonperishable food items to the church by December 14th. With your assistance, we can cheer up the homes of many families again this Christmas. We are also in search of drivers to deliver the baskets on December 16 th. If you can assist, please contact Argiro Lafkas at Arcadian Association Elections and General Assembly - December 3rd Οn Sunday, December 3, following the Divine Liturgy and until 5:30 p.m. at the Banquet Centre, the Arcadian Association will hold Εlections (12-5:30 p.m.) and General Assembly (5:30 p.m.).
