In reading the scriptures, one meets innumerable passages which are difficult to understand and interpret. One such passage was the object of our bible study last month from Saint Paul s Epistle to the Romans: For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! (Romans 7:15,19,24-25) The basic message is that we continuously have small battles going on inside of us between knowing what we need to do and our inability to do so. Likewise, we often find ourselves not making the choices we intend to make, or fail to communicate what we intend to express. Why do we struggle so much with our inner desires being in conflict with the path that we know we need to follow? Church Office Soteria Simantirakis... Custodian And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. This continual conflict is as old as Adam and Eve, and the Apostle Paul clearly struggled with his will and his intentions as he so vividly expressed in his epistle to the Romans. In the process, however, he also expressed the cause as well as the cure to this perpetual quagmire. At the time of the Fall, God allowed certain consequences to befall mankind in order to compel our desire to be saved. These consequences are not legal punishments for sin but rather a state which God allows, a perpetual darkness of uncertainty and conflict which are as inescapable as death itself, and from which we earnestly desire to be relieved. The only One Who provides a path out of this darkness of unending conflict is the same Who smashed the shackles of death and resurrected unto eternal life. He is the first born of the dead and we are called to follow Him. Yet, even though we are baptized and chrismated, even though we commune His Holy Body and Blood, we continue to struggle with the darkness that was set inside of our fallen human nature. This fallen state would make us believe that virtue and holiness is unattainable. It makes us take what we achieved through Christ and throw it away either in pride or in judgment, in seeking recognition or in considering ourselves better than others. Our fallenness places thoughts in our head destroying even the holiest of moments. It presents sin as reasonable and beneficial. It weakens our free will and resolve. It is indeed the corrupted desire within us which we cannot kill. Sin breeds sin. It is not just the devil tempting us. It is our very self, which, either by sins already committed, or by fear of an uncertain future, suffers from a weakened resolve and freedom to do what we know is right. We are all addicts to sin, and like any addict one cannot bring oneself out of it by will alone. That is after all the definition of addiction. An addict is one who has lost the ability to will himself out of a certain habit. The cure lies in his acknowledgment that he needs help and in the intervention of someone who can help him. In the case of addiction to sin the only One capable of helping is the only sinless One Who is the Christ. Therefore, our salvation is not legalistic but rather one of healing. Legalistically we are all guilty and we have no chance of ever being innocent. Salvation is given by Christ s ability to heal those who acknowledge their need for healing. Our healing is the goal of the Church and not some legalistic realignment. To be healed means to have God fix our desire, our energy, our resolve, our nous and our heart. That is the therapeutic aspect of the mysteries in our life in Christ. By our life in the Church, Christ heals the broken compass within us. He heals the force within us which corrupts our desire, and He gives us the freedom to carry out the will of the One Whom we were destined to follow. Just to be clear, our darkened fallen state is not God s creation. It is all ours and we own it. Its existence was granted by God so that we may seek the cure which is the Christ, just as the Christ is the answer to our mortality. God s intention was for His creation to live with Him forever, and to that end He allowed for us to feel the pain of darkness and the 2 The Voice

3 sting of death so that we may seek the healing love of our Lord and Savior. The cure is neither legalistic nor just moral or social. The cure lies in the healing sacramental ministry of the Church, in our willingness to allow Christ to heal us, and His unique ability and task on earth to bring us to our eternal destiny. Amen. Fr. Stewardship Goal: Year to date As Christian Stewards we are called to give back to God from the first fruits of our labor. We support our parish and her ministries in an intentional way and not with only what it left after everything else has been taken care of. In whatever work we do, we are called to give glory to God for the abilities and opportunities he provides. We do this by caring for the work we do, applying our God-given abilities to our work, and by respecting the responsibilities with which we have been entrusted. We do our best and give the glory to God. We hope and pray that this year s stewardship and commitment to our parish will stand worthy of our parish calling and the blessings of our patron Saint Spyridon. 4 ARCHANGELS ACADEMY THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! To everyone that helped to make our Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser such a success. Thank you to Mrs. Vicky Argyropoulos and her breakfast committee for the wonderful decorations and all their hard work. Thank you to Bill & John Tsoukalas and Lefty Karropoulos for cooking all the delicious items that were served. Everything was delicious! I was a fun and tasty event. On Friday, April 20th, a wonderful time was had by all that attended this year s Field Trip to Lake Katherine Nature Center. This year s theme was I Spy Spring. And what a lovely spring day it was! Thank you to all the moms and dads that were able to chaperone. Thursday, May 24th, Preschool will be holding it s 13th Annual end of the Year Program and Banquet in St. Spyridon s Community Hall. It is our tradition that this event is organized by the parents of the graduating students. Thank you in advance to the graduating committee for all your hard work and long hours. 6 Χριστός Ανέστη! Our lambades sales were great! Thanks to all who supported the PTA by purchasing candles and to all the moms who crafted the beautiful lambades. Plutarchos Greek school students returned to school from Pascha break on April 13. After Greek School, PTA hosted the annual Bright Friday BBQ. A BIG thank you to Demetra Mikroulis, Yianna Halikias, Helen Halikias and all the parents that helped put this event together. The children enjoyed a nice dinner, registered for Junior Olympics and tried out for the Junior Olympics. April 16 and 20, Christina Reedy took our Spring Pictures. Proofs will be going home with a form for purchases. Thanks to Demetria and Mena for helping Christina and getting all the children on Monday. Friday the 7 th and graders were able to take their pictures as well as any children who missed on Monday. PTA scholarship applications are due May 1. One, $1000 scholarship will be awarded to one High School Senior. Please join us for our last PTA meeting on Friday, May 4 th. Our last days of school is quickly approaching. Last day for Sunday school is May 20 and last day for Greek School is May 25. Lastly, our Family Fun day is June 3, at Bourbon Street. Everyone is welcome to attend this fun filled day. 7 Χρἶστός Ανέστη! Christ is Risen! As the Sunday School year comes to an end, I would like to give heartfelt thanks to everyone who makes this program thrive. First, to Father Tilemahos for his guidance and support. To the teachers: I am so grateful to each of you for sharing your time and talent with Sunday School. To the parents: You support Sunday School by bringing your children and attending our events. To the students: Thank you for coming each week, participating with a smile while learning about our faith. Our annual Bible Bowl will take place on Sunday May 6 th during Sunday School. Grades 5 th -8 th will play against grades 9 th -12 th. This is always a fun event for our students and is a great way for them to recall things that they have learned in Sunday School. We are also looking for Sunday School teachers for next year. If you are interested in teaching, whether it be as a substitute when needed, or would like to volunteer more often, please let me know. Our teachers are all volunteers, and most do not work as teachers in their professional life. Did you know that a majority of our teachers have volunteered here at St. Spyridon for over a decade? I am always impressed by their level of commitment and dedication. I also know that one of the reasons they stay is because of how rewarding it is. There is nothing quite like seeing your students grow up year after year and they remember that YOU were their teacher. So, if you re thinking about it or would like to inquire, please let me know. Our last class of the year will be on Sunday May 13 th. Graduation Sunday will be on May 20 th. I always look forward to this day as an opportunity to thank all of our Sunday School staff as well as congratulate our 8 th graders, High School and College graduates. Zoe Kopanis, Sunday School Director SUNDAY SCHOOL YOUTH NEWS Congratulations to our parish representatives to the Metropolis Oratorical Festival: Anastasia Chibucos, Maria Glikis, Demetra Alikakos, and Katerina Alikakos. Anastasia Chibucos placed 1st for junior essay, and Demetra Alikakos placed 1st for senior iconography. Furthermore, Luke Christy placed 1st for junior oratory, and both he and Katerina offered their homilies to our Sunday School students. Congratulations to all our Oratorical Festival Participants. Our Goyans served dinner at the Ronald McDonald House in Oak Lawn, on Friday, April 29th. 8 METROPOLITAN NATHANAEL S VISIT TO OUR PARISH On Holy Wednesday, April 4th, our newly enthroned Metropolitan Nathanael made his first pastoral visit to our community for the Orthros service. Our altar boys, myrofores, and a crowd of faithful welcomed His Eminence and received the sacrament of Holy Unction. Many thanks to our Philoptochos ladies who hosted the fellowship afterwards in welcoming His Eminence to our parish. Εις πολλά έτη Δέσποτα! 8 The Voice

12 HOLY PASCHA THANK YOU OUR MYROFORES, ALTAR BOYR, CHOIR MEMBERS AND CHANTERS Thank you to all that served with dedication and in great numbers during our Holy Week and Pascha services. Many thanks to their advisors and to all the parents and grandparents who made sure that all the young kids were present to serve during the Divine Services. On Saturday night, along with our altar boys, the myrofores enjoyed the traditional pizza and ice cream after cracking all their red eggs. THANK YOU To the Anonymous donors for donating food for our Food Pantry and for the Easter Baskets. To all that donated for our Holy Lent and Easter flowers. To all the Philoptochos ladies and chef Dean Eliacostas and all his volunteers for the Palm Sunday Luncheon. To all who donated flowers for Great Lent and Holy Week, and to those who decorated the Epitaphios To Mr. James Halikas and the P.T.A. parents and volunteers for hosting the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday of Lazarus. To all who prepared baked goods and who donated for the Palm Sunday Philoptochos Bake Sale. All the proceeds will benefit needy families of our community. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Palos Hills. Our community will be represented by numerous athletes in individual & team sports. Registration for the Junior Olympics will be held during the Coffee Social Hour after the Divine Liturgy. 17 Dear Parishioners and Friends of Philoptochos, Χριστός Ανέστη! Chris is Risen! May the celebration of our Holy Pascha and our Lord s Resurrection fill our hearts with Love, Joy and Peace. Last month we celebrated the Enthronement or our new Metropolitan and the entire parish of St. Spyridon was elated with his visit on Holy Wednesday. Last week, I, along with our Philoptochos sister Sylvia Stamatoglou, visited St. Photios Shrine in St. Augustine, Florida. The director, Mrs. Polixeni Hillier took us on a tour of the historic shrine. We were very much impressed with the history of the first colony of Greek immigrants who came to America in St. Photios Chapel houses the relics of 18 saints. In closing, the Philoptochos Board and all the members are looking forward to seeing you for our Mother s Day Luncheon. Thank you again for you love and support! With agape, Toula Georgiopoulos PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS PHILOPTOCHOS SCHOLARSHIP The St. Spyridon Ladies Philoptochos Society invites all interested high school seniors and current college students to apply for the St. Spyridon Philoptochos Scholarship. The winning applicant will receive a $1000 scholarship from Philoptochos. Our chef, Dean Eliacostas, is preparing another great meal for us. The tables are filling quickly this year so get your reservations in early to secure a table.
