Paul Costopoulos The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor, He has sent Me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord (Luke 4:18-19) These words, first spoken by the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 61:1), come to us from the Gospel reading that is read at the Divine Liturgy at the beginning of the new ecclesias cal year, September 1. Jesus quoted these words in the synagogue of Nazareth one Sabbath when He was handed the Book of Isaiah to read. When He finished the reading, He said, Today, this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. Why do you think that this passage is read at the beginning of the new ecclesias cal year? For an obvious reason! The Church at the beginning of every New Year wants the listener to know who Jesus is and for which reason He came. Jesus is the Son of God. His coming into the world was foretold by the prophets of old. He came into the world to proclaim the good news that through faith and observance of God s commandments, of love and forgiveness, one can come to know God. Knowing God is beneficial because it renders me meaningful and hopeful that the coming year will be be er that the previous one. The last sentence of the above-quoted prophecy is easily understood. In Isaiah s me the acceptable year of the Lord meant the Year of Jubilee. Every 50 years according to ancient Jewish custom debts were cancelled, prison terms were terminated, land holdings went back to their original owners, and resentments were relinquished. For us Orthodox Chris ans the acceptable year is the me of Incarna on (cit. Orthodox Study Bible), when the Kingdom of Heaven has come to earth in the person of Christ. He it is Who came to preach the Gospel, to live, to suffer, to die, and to rise again from the dead in order to cancel our sins and empower us to forgive others. Like every year this year is the acceptable year of the Lord. As such it necessitates that in imita- on of Christ we commit to se ng people free by loving them uncondi onally and forgiving them unreservedly. That can happen through us only if it happens to us. When it does, as it can by God s grace, then all memories, unforgiven hurts, or unresolved hos li es that hold us in a prison of broken heartedness thereby will be decimated. There are four steps you can undertake to make this an acceptable year: 1. Seek forgiveness through confession of sins 2. Accept forgiveness 3. Ask for forgiveness from anyone you may have hurt 4. Offer forgiveness to anyone who may have hurt you or misunderstood you Forgiveness, which is a fruit of love, is the one gi our Lord offers that we can t have unless we give it away. As we hear on Forgiveness Sunday, If you forgive men their trespasses, so also will your heavenly Father forgive you (Ma hew 6:14). Everyone s acceptable year should start today. Tomorrow may be too late. Don t wait. Put your faith in the one who in Nazareth claimed, The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me. He it is who is God. Your faith in Him will lead to knowledge of God. Knowledge of God is the greatest good in life, St. Silouan once said. Not to know God is to bring disaster into one s life. That you may never know disaster but only the greatest good, is my wish for you.

Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and sides will be provided. Please bring a dessert and a small wrapped gift to be raffled. Bids are being solicited for replacement of our air conditioning and heating units. Final negotiations are underway for the purchase of the church van. A fundraising drive will begin on September 11, 2016 for the St. Nicholas Shrine at Ground Zero. Parishioners will be contacted by members of the committee for individual donations. Annunciation Christian Academy We extend warm welcome to all families and their little ones joining ACA! 5 CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS OF THE ORTHODOX FAITH- SWEET BASIL (VASILIKO) Do you know the official flower of your state? Every state has an official flower. The Orthodox Church also has an official flower. It is called Vasiliko. This word in English is called Sweet Basil. Why have we adopted this strange flower as the official flower of our Church? Why do we hold this flower in such great esteem? Many of us have several plants in our homes or in our gardens. Others bring Sweet Basil to Church on certain Feast Days of the Church. What does this particular flower have to do with our Faith? How is it associated with our worship service? Actually, the Basil flower became special to the Church over 1600 years ago. St. Helen, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, in the year 329, had journeyed to the Holy Land to rebuild many of the precious Christian Shrines which laid in ruins for many years. She built many Churches and Shrines, which include the Church of the Holy Sepulchre; the Church of the Nativity; the Church of the Ascension; and a Tower and Chapel at Mt. Sinai for the pious monks. While she remained in Jerusalem, she searched diligently for the area known as Golgotha in the hope of finding the true Cross of Jesus Christ. After many weeks of searching, a beautiful flower was found growing in an area which was both lonely and abandoned. No other plant was growing in this area, and St. Helen ordered her soldiers to dig deep into the earth at the exact spot where this unusual flower was growing. It was here that they found the three crosses upon which Jesus and the two thieves were crucified. St. Helen was most anxious to find out which of the three crosses was the true cross of Jesus Christ. A very sick person was brought to the area and placed on the crosses. When the afflicted person was finally placed on the third cross, the man was cured of his sickness. This is how they found the True Cross of Christ. Since that day over 1600 years ago, the Basil flower has become the official flower of Orthodoxy. It is used in many of the major Feast Days of the Church. It is used during the Epiphany Season; during the Feast Day of the Elevation of the Holy Cross on September 14th and the Third Sunday of Lent, Sunday of the Veneration of the Holy Cross. Do you have Basil growing in your garden? Perhaps you can arrange to have this flower in your garden or potted in your home. You may even bring Vasiliko to Church when it is to be used during the Church Services at the above mentioned times of the year. Now that you know why we have adopted the Basil Flower (Vasiliko) as the official flower of our Church, you may tell your friends about this wonderful custom and tradition in our Faith. Our new year is beginning.first I want to acknowledge the love of our Father Demetri. He truly does all he does with love as our scripture quote says. He has recently lost his beloved mother, Pres. Sophia. Over her 9 month or so illness.he and Pres Olga went to see her every week because of love! We didn t even know he was gone because of the love he has for us! He is so quiet about what he does what an example for us all! May her memory be eternal Father Demetri. Another love filled journey was taken by Victoria Karagiorgis to Guatemala and she will be our guest speaker at our first meeting Sept 14 at 7pm. We supported her with a $ donation. We do invite the entire church for this special sharing of her trip. The BAKE SALE preparations begin September 7, Wednesday at 4pm..come and help us knock out 5000 Koulourakia. We should finish by about 7pm.come anytime you can and help us! We need young hands to get involved. We do have some bake sale changes we will reveal soon. I am excited about us being together again to share the love of helping others through our efforts. 7 Vacation Church School Senior Oratorical Festival Sunday School News from Annunciation We hope you all had a wonderful summer and are as ready and excited as we are to start the Sunday School year. Our first day of classes will be September 11,2016. On Wednesday, September 14 at 6pm, Annuncia on will have a Blessing of Water Service for the beginning of all Church ministries, followed by a fellowship meal at 6:30pm. Join us! Our Charity Food Drive begins Sept. 25! We challenge our community to overflow the boxes this year. The need is greater than ever. This year we will be discussing various issues faced by Orthodox Christian Teens using the Orthodox Christian Teen Survival Guide series from the Archdiocese Youth Department Wednesday Sept. 28th GOYA BIBLE STUDY/ BIBLE BOWL 7:00p-8:15 GOYA BIBLE STUDY AND BIBLE BOWL This year we are excited that we will be offering a Bible Study for GOYA beginning on September 14th. The Bible Study will be meeting on the 2nd Wednesday (in conjunction with Community Fellowship Night) and the 4th Wednesday of each month from 7:00PM UNTIL 8:15PM. The focus of the Bible Study will be on the parables of Christ. We will be using our Orthodox Study Bibles (bring them with you) and also using the study book The Parables by Archbishop Dimitri, (which we will provide). The BIBLE STUDY is open to all GOYANS but is especially important for those who are planning to participate in BI- BLE BOWL this year at WYR. Our primary goal is for GOYANs to become more familiar with the scriptures and to learn and grow in their faith. Many thanks to Tamara Coburn who has volunteered to coach our Bible Bowl Team this year. These forms allow us to update contact information which helps us keep you all informed about what is going on concerning programs and upcoming events. Be on the lookout for more information that will be coming soon for those wanting to participate in our athletics programs ( girls volleyball and boys basketball). Remember that the greatest of any program that our youth can participate in is the DIVINE LITURGY every Sunday.
