2 ST JOHN CLIMACUS (of the Ladder) The Fourth Sunday of Lent is dedicated to Saint John of the Ladder (Climacus), the author of the work, The Ladder of Divine Ascent. The abbot of Saint Catherine s Monastery on Mount Sinai (6th century) stands as a witness to the violent effort needed for entrance into God s Kingdom (Mt.10: 12). The spiritual struggle of the Christian life is a real one, not against flesh and blood, but against... the rulers of the present darkness... the hosts of wickedness in heavenly places... (Eph 6:12). Saint John encourages the faithful in their efforts for, according to the Lord, only he who endures to the end will be saved (Mt.24:13). Venerable Basil the New, Anchorite, Near Constantinople Saint Basil the New left the world in his youth, and struggled in a desolate place. Once, courtiers of the Byzantine Emperor were passing by and saw him dressed in rags, and were alarmed by his strange appearance. Suspicious of the holy ascetic, they captured him and brought him to the city, where the patrician Samon questioned him. When asked who he was, the saint merely said that he was a stranger in the land. They subjected the monk to terrible tortures, but he endured it in silence, not wishing to reveal the details of his ascetic life to them. Samon lost his patience and asked Saint Basil, Impious one, how long will you hide, who are you, and from where do you come? The saint replied, It is more appropriate to call impious those who, like yourself, lead a life of impurity. After his public humiliation, Samon ordered his men to hang the saint upside down with his hands and feet tied. These torments were so cruel that those witnessing them murmured against Samon. When they released the holy ascetic after three days of torture, they found him alive and unharmed. Samon attributed this miracle to sorcery and had Saint Basil thrown to a lion. However, the lion did not touch the saint, and lay peacefully at his feet. Samon ordered Saint Basil to be drowned in the sea, but two dolphins brought him to shore. The saint went into the city, where he met a sick man named John, who was suffering from fever. Saint Basil healed the sick man in the name of the Savior, and accepted John s invitation to stay in his home. Numerous believers came to the saint for advice and guidance, and also to receive healing from sickness through his prayers. Saint Basil, endowed with the gift of discernment, guided sinners on the path of repentance, and he could predict future events. 2 23

3 Among those who visited Saint Basil was a certain Gregory, who became his disciple and later wrote a detailed Life of his teacher. Gregory once found an expensive sash at an inn, which had been dropped by the innkeeper s daughter. He hid it on his person, intending to sell it and give the money to the poor. On the way home, he lost the sash and some other things. Saint Basil admonished him in a dream, showed him a broken pot and said, If anyone steals such a worthless thing, they will be chastized four times over. You hid a valuable sash, and you will be condemned as a thief. You should return what you found. After the death of Saint Theodora, who had attended Saint Basil, Gregory very much wanted to learn about her life beyond the grave, and he often asked the holy ascetic to reveal this to him. Through the saint s prayers, Gregory saw Saint Theodora in a dream. She told him how her soul underwent tribulations after death, and how the power of the prayers of Saint Basil had helped her (The Feast Day of Saint Theodora of Constantinople is December 30). Saint Basil died in about the year 944 at the age of 110. The Church calls him Basil the New to distinguish him from other ascetics of the same name. 5 EPISTLE READINGS Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1. The Lord will give strength to his people. Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6: BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. PAINT A BOWL for the Empty Bowl Dinner! Sunday, April 2, 2017 During coffee hour Please join us to decorate a bowl that will be used at the Empty Bowl Dinner to benefit The Haven from Hunger in May. The bowl you decorate will be one of hundreds available to the public at the Empty Bowl fundraiser on May 4. For a minimum donation of $15 ($10 for children under 10), each guest will select a bowl, enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread, and take the bowl home as a reminder of hunger in our communities. 7 GOSPEL READING Sunday of St. John Climacus The Reading is from Mark 9:17-31 At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! The responsibility of the Investment Committee is to administer and oversee the investment of principal and distribution of accrued interest and appreciation, with the Church s professional financial advisor, of all Church endowment funds pursuant to the provisions of the Investment Policy, the Lalikos Scholarship Endowment Fund Statement of Investment Policy and the St. Vasilios Church Scholarship Endowment Fund Statement of Investment Policy. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Investment Committee please contact me by April 15, 2017 at cpartaledis@gmail.com or at IMPROVEMENTS TO THE ALTAR Improvements to the Altar Father Chris is looking to add two electrical outlets to the Altar along with some additional lighting and to replace the final counter top. The cost of the project is $2,300 and Father is looking for donations in any amount to help complete this project. If you have any questions please call or speak with Father Chris. 17

9 The Investment Committee will convene a meeting on April, 2017 and will unseal the proposals compared to and in consideration with the needs of the church. The Investment Committee may, in its discretion, recommend award of the grantable amount of the annual investment proceeds of the Endowment Fund to any grant applicant(s)which may be one or more Saint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church Community parish organizations and/or individuals. The grant recommendation(s) will be presented to the Parish Council for acceptance and to the 2017 Spring General Assembly for ratification. According to the Investment Policy, following each calendar year end the Investment Committee calculates the allowable grantable amount based on the formula prescribed in the Investment Policy which consists of net earnings on Endowment Fund principal. According to the Investment Policy, the principal of the Saint Vasilios Endowment Fund must remain inviolate and irrevocable. As such, at each Spring General Assembly being the first, the Investment Committee will propose and recommend its use of the grant money according to the needs of Saint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church and in consideration of the grant proposals received, which recommended use(s) must be approved by a majority of the General Assembly. No annual grant giving is mandatory. CEMETERY VISITS Due to the number of sacraments, 40 day blessings and memorials on Sundays it is difficult to make cemetery visits on Sundays after liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside during the week you are kindly asked to make an appointment by calling the church office. HOSPITAL VISITS Due to HIPAA privacy rules, hospitals no longer provide a list of Orthodox patients to us. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. We welcome children ages Our program includes arts and crafts, water play, music and movement and of course the opportunity to learn more about our Orthodox faith. Friday the 4th we will head up to the Metropolis of Boston Camp for the day and welcome parents to join us and help carpool. We ask for a donation of $50 per child just to cover our expenses (rental van for Friday, snacks, extra curricular activities in the afternoons, crafts supplies, etc). Grant proposals of all differing money amounts are encouraged and must be submitted in writing containing, at a minimum: i) the Name, address and contact information of the proposed grant applicant; ii) the mission statement of the grant applicant if an organization or a description of an individual s history and involvement with the church demonstrating commitment to the Saint Vasilios Community and its missions; iii) a clear and concise statement of the proposed use of the grantable amount;; iv) the amount requested for an Endowment Fund Grant ; and v) a proposed budget for use of the proposed grant funds in accordance with the proposed stated purposes. Interested organizations and/or individuals of the St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church Community must submit their grant proposals in writing to the Investment Committee, through the church office, no later than March 31, 2017 contained in a sealed envelope marked Endowment Fund Grant Proposal. Endowment Fund proceeds may be used for any purpose consistent with the mission of the Church which are not normal, budgeted for capital, operations and maintenance expenses of the church. Allowed purposes for which grant money may be used, for example, include, without limitation: Areas of need beyond the local church, such as community services or mission projects. Major improvements to space and facilities/capital improvements. Unbudgeted maintenance of buildings and grounds. New program initiatives for children, youth or adult ministries. During the Agape Service on Easter Sunday Morning, the Gospel is read in several different languages to show that all nations proclaim that Christ is Risen. English and Greek are traditionally read by the clergy.
