1 The Holy Great Martyr Dimitrios the Myrrhflowing. Τοῦ Ἁγίου Μεγαλοµάρτυρος Δηµητρίου τοῦ Μυροβλύτου October 26 This glorious and wonderworking saint was born in Thessaloniki of noble and devout parents. Implored of God by childless parents, Dimitrios was their only son, and so was raised and educated with great care. Dimitrios s father was a commander in Thessalonica. When his father died, Emperor Maximian appointed Dimitrios as commander in his place. As he appointed him, Maximian, an opponent of Christ, particularly recommended that he persecute and exterminate the Christians in Thessalonica. Dimitrios not only disobeyed the emperor but openly confessed and preached the Lord Jesus Christ in the city of Thessaloniki. When the emperor heard of this he became furious with Dimitrios. Then, when he was returning from battle against the Sarmatians, Maximian stopped at Thessaloniki to investigate the matter. The emperor summoned Dimitrios and questioned him about his faith. Dimitrios openly acknowledged his Christian Faith to the emperor and also denounced the emperor s idolatry. Maximian cast Dimitrios into prison. Knowing what was awaiting him, Dimitrios gave all his goods to his faithful servant Lupus to distribute to the poor, and joyfully awaited his imminent suffering for Christ the Lord. An angel of God appeared to him in prison, saying: Peace be to you, O sufferer of Christ; be brave and be strong! After several days, the emperor sent soldiers to the prison to kill Dimitrios. The soldiers found the saint of God at prayer and ran him through with lances. Christians secretly took his body and honorably buried it. Healing myrrh flowed from the body of the martyr of Christ, curing many of the sick. Soon, a small church was built over his relics. An Illyrian nobleman, Leontius, was afflicted with an incurable illness. He hastened, with prayer, to the relics of Saint Dimitrios and was completely healed. In thanksgiving, Leontius erected a much larger church on the site of the old church. The saint appeared to him on two occasions. When Emperor Justinian wanted to translate the relics of the saint from Thessaloniki to Constantinople, flaming sparks sprang from the tomb and a voice was heard: Stop, and do not touch! And thus, the relics of Saint Dimitrios have remained for all time in Thessaloniki. As the protector of Thessaloniki, Saint Dimitrios has appeared many times, and on many occasions has saved Thessalonica from great calamity. His miracles are without number. The Russians considered Saint Dimitrios to be the protector of Siberia, which was conquered and annexed to Russia on October 26,

How truly wonderful that, by the radiance of his miracles, Dimitrios continues to shine like the sun to the very limits of the universe; he is enlightened by the never-setting Sun and rejoices in the never-waning Light; by his splendor, the darkness of barbarism is kept afar, sicknesses are healed and the demons are overcome. 4 For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption; and He shall redeem Israel out of all his iniquities. Stichos 6 For He has made His mercy to prevail over us, and the truth of the Lord abides to the ages. Streaming with your own blood, O Dimitrios, you were offered to the life-giving Christ, Who had poured out His own precious blood for you; he gave you a share in His glory, making you an heir of His Kingdom, for you triumphed in your combat with the evil one and frustrated all his terrible temptations. 6 might quake at Your presence as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil to make Your name known to Your adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at Your presence! When You did terrible things which we did not look for, You came down, the mountains quaked at Your presence. From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides You, Who works for those who wait for him. You meet him that joyfully works righteousness, those that remember You in Your ways. Behold, You were angry, and we sinned; in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved? Israel was holy to the Lord, the first fruits of His harvest. All who ate of it became guilty; evil came upon them, says the Lord. Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. Thus says the Lord: What wrong did your fathers find in Me that they went far from Me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless? They did not say, Where is the Lord Who brought us up from the land of Egypt, Who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells? And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in you defiled My land, and made My heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, Where is the Lord? Those who handle the law did not know Me; the rulers transgressed against Me; the prophets prophesied by Báal, and went after things that do not profit. Therefore I still contend with you, says the Lord, and with your children s children I will contend.
