4 Rita Wilson s Big Fat Greek Orthodox Easter by Rita Wilson Editor s note: Many of us reading this the diaspora kids like myself, can relate to every sentence. Since I was a teen, it was tradition after the Anastasis Service to go to the Burger King drive thru for three Whoppers (no ketchup) and a large Diet Coke. And there was still room for the Paschal meal waiting at home! However, as we age, our bodies change, and that three Whoppers became two, and the two are now still two but one for now and one for later. Rita Wilson really hit the mark on this article As the Eastern Orthodox, whose churches follow a different liturgical calendar than Christian churches in the West, observe Easter on Sunday, On Faith looks back at a favorite column from Greek Orthodox actress and producer Rita Wilson: Here are some of the things that non-greeks may not know about Greek Easter: We don t do bunnies. We don t do chocolate. We don t do pastels. We do lamb, sweet cookies, and deep red. The lamb is roasted and not chocolate, the sweet cookies are called Koulourakia and are twisted like a braid, and our Easter eggs are dyed one color only: blood red. There is no Easter Egg hunt. There is a game in which you crack your red egg against someone else s red egg hoping to have the strongest egg, which would indicate you getting a lot of good luck. Holy Week, for a Greek Orthodox, means you clear your calendar, you don t make plans for that week at all because you will be in church every day, and you fast. Last year, in addition to not eating red meat and dairy before communion, my family also gave up sodas for the 40-day Lenten period. During one particularly stressful moment, there were many phone calls amongst our kids as to whether or not a canned drink called TING, made with grapefruit juice and carbonated water was, in fact, a soda and not a juice, which our then 10-year-old decided it was, so we had a Ting-less Lent. No matter where I find myself in the world I never miss Easter, or as we call it, Pascha. I have celebrated in Paris, London, New York City, Los Angeles, and in Salinas, California at a small humble church that was pure and simple. When we were kids, our parents would take us, and now as parents ourselves we take our children to many of the Holy Week services including the Good Friday service where you mourn the death of Jesus by walking up to the Epitaphio, which represents the dead body of Christ, make your cross, kiss the Epitaphio, and marvel at how it was decorated with a thousand glorious flowers, rose petals and smells like incense. Some very pious people will crawl under the Epitaphio. I have always been so moved to see this. There is no self- consciousness in this utter act of faith. There is no embarrassment to show symbolic sorrow at the death of our Saviour. At a certain point in the Good Friday service, the Epitaphio is carried outside by the deacons of the church, as if they are pall bearers, followed by worshippers carrying lit candles protected from dripping on your clothes and on others by having a red plastic cup that sits below the flame to catch the wax drippings. Every Greek person knows all too well the smell of burning hair. One time, in London, I smelled something and turned to look at where the smell might be coming from, only to be horrified that it was coming from me and my head was on fire. But I digress. It is somber and quiet as we follow the Epitaphio, in candlelight, from the altar to the outdoors, in order for it to circle the church before it returns back to the altar. We sing beautiful lamentations that make your heart break with their pure expression of sadness and hope. One of my favorite services during Easter is Holy Unction. This happens on the Wednesday of Holy Week. Holy Unction is a sacrament. It is for healing of our ills, physical and spiritual. It is preparing us for confession and communion. This sacrament has always been so humbling to me.

5 When you approach the priest for Holy Unction, you bow your head and as he says a prayer and asks you your Christian name, he takes a swab of blessed oil and makes the sign of the cross on your forehead, cheeks, chin, backs of your hands and palms. It is a powerful reminder of how, with faith, we can be healed in many ways. The holy oil is then carefully dabbed with cotton balls provided by the church so you don t leave there looking as if you re ready to fry chicken with your face, and before you exit the church, you leave your cotton balls in a basket being held by altar boys, so as not to dispose of the holy oil in a less than holy place. The church burns the used cotton balls. There have been times when I have left church with my cotton ball and have panicked when I am driving away. At home I take care of it. Imagine a grown woman burning cotton balls in her sink. But that is what I do. Midnight Mass on Saturday night, going into Sunday morning is the Anastasi service. We will arrive at church at around 11 p.m., when it starts, and listen to the chanter as he chants in preparation for the service. My kids, dressed in their suits and having been awakened from a deep sleep to come to church, groggily sit and wait holding their candles with red cup wax catchers. As the service progresses, the moment we have all been waiting for approaches. All the lights in the church are turned off. It is pitch black. It is dead quiet. The priest takes one candle and lights his one candle from the one remaining lit altar candle, which represents the light of Christ s love (I believe). From this one candle, the priest approaches the congregation and using his one candle he shares his light with a few people in the front pews. They in turn share their light with the people next to them and behind them. In quiet solemnity, we wait until the entire church is lit with only the light of candles, the light that has been created by one small flame has now created a room of shared light. And at a moment that can only be described as glorious, the priest cries out, Xristos Anesti! Christ is Risen! We respond with Alithos Anesti! Truly, He is Risen! We sing our glorious Xristos Anesti song with the choir. That moment, which happens about an hour, to an hour and half into the service and seems as if the service is over, actually marks the beginning of the service. The service then continues for another hour and a half. When I was a kid, after the service was over, we would go to the Anastasi Dinner that the church would throw in the church hall, where we would break our fast, drink Cokes at 2:30 in the morning, dance to a raucous Greek band and not go home until our stomachs were full of lamb, eggs, Koulouraki, and we saw the sun rise. Or was it the Son rise? But usually now, after Midnight Mass, we drive home with our still-lit candles. I always love seeing the looks on people s faces as they pull up to our car seeing a family with lit candles calmly moving at 65 m.p.h. down the highway. When we get home, we crack eggs, eat cookies, drink hot chocolate (so not Greek) and I burn a cross into our doorways with the carbon from the candle smoke to bless our house for the year. There have been many times when painters touching up the house have wondered why there was this strange black cross burned into our doorways. The next day is usually followed by a late sleep in, then getting up and doing the same thing you just did but in the daytime at the Easter Picnic, usually held at a local park. I have to say, the Greeks know how to do Easter. Make no mistake. This is the most important holiday in our church. It is a beautiful week. I haven t even begun to touch on what the week is really like. This is a sampling of a sampling of what it is like. It is so much more deep, so much richer than I have written here. But one thing is clear. It is a powerful, beautiful, mysterious, humbling, healing and moving week. It is filled with tradition and ritual. It is about renewal and faith. And even though it is still too early to say, Xristos Anesti! Alithos Anesti! Actress Rita Wilson, whose mother and father both were born in Greece, produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Wilson and her actor husband Tom Hanks had their own Big Fat Greek Wedding in They have two children.

6 The Sacrament of Holy Unction: Holy Wednesday Evening, 7:00pm Introduction On the afternoon or evening of Great and Holy Wednesday, the Sacrament or Mystery of Holy Unction is conducted in Orthodox parishes. The Sacrament of Holy Unction is offered for the healing of soul and body and for forgiveness of sins. At the conclusion of the service of the Sacrament, the body is anointed with oil, and the grace of God, which heals infirmities of soul and body, is called down upon each person. The Sacrament is performed by a gathering of priests, ideally seven in number, however, it can be performed by a lesser number and even by a single priest. Holy Unction When one is ill and in pain, this can very often be a time of life when one feels alone and isolated. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, or Holy Unction as it is also known, reminds us that when we are in pain, either physical, emotional, or spiritual, Christ is present with us through the ministry of His Church. He is among us to offer strength to meet the challenges of life, and even the approach of death. As with Chrismation, oil is also used in this Sacrament as a sign of God's presence, strength, and forgiveness. After the reading of seven Epistle lessons, seven Gospel lessons and the offering of seven prayers, which are all devoted to healing, the priest anoints the body with the Holy Oil. Orthodoxy does not view this Sacrament as available only to those who are near death. It is offered to all who are sick in body, mind, or spirit. Christ came to the world to "bear our infirmities." One of the signs of His divine Messiahship was to heal the sick. The power of healing remains in the Church since Christ himself remains in the Church through the Holy Spirit. The Sacrament of the Unction of the sick is the Church's specific prayer for healing. If the faith of the believers is strong enough, and if it is the will of God, there is every reason to believe that the Lord can heal those who are diseased. The biblical basis for the Sacrament is found in James 5:14-16: Is any among you sick, let him call for the presbyters of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. In ancient Christian literature one may find indirect testimonies of the Mystery of Unction in Saint Irenaeus of Lyons and in Origen. Later there are clear testimonies of it in Saints Basil the Great and John Chrysostom, who have left prayers for the healing of the infirm which entered later into the rite of Unction; and likewise in Saint Cyril of Alexandria. In the fifth century, Pope Innocent I answered a series of questions concerning the Mystery of Unction, indicating in his answers that a) it should be performed "upon believers who are sick"; b) it may be performed also by a bishop, since one should not see in the words of the Apostle, let him call for the presbyters, any prohibition for a bishop to participate in the sacred action; c) this

7 anointment may not be performed "on those undergoing ecclesiastical penance,' because it is a "Mystery,' and to those who are forbidden the other Mysteries, how can one allow only one? The express purpose of the Sacrament of Holy Unction is healing and forgiveness. Since it is not always the will of God that there should be physical healing, the prayer of Christ that God's will be done always remains as the proper context of the Sacrament. In addition, it is the clear intention of the Sacrament that through the anointing of the sick body the sufferings of the person should be sanctified and united to the sufferings of Christ. In this way, the wounds of the flesh are consecrated, and strength is given that the suffering of the diseased person may not be unto the death of his soul, but for eternal salvation in the resurrection and life of the Kingdom of God. It is indeed the case that death inevitably comes. All must die, even those who in this life are given a reprieve through healing in order to have more time on the earth. Thus, the healing of the sick is not itself a final goal, but is merely "instrumental" in that it is given by God as a sign of his mercy and as a grace for the further opportunity of man to live for him and for others in the life of this world. In the case where a person is obviously in the final moments of his earthly life, the Church has special prayers for the "separation of soul and body." Thus, it is clear that the Sacrament of Holy Unction is for the sick-both the physically and mentally sick-and is not reserved for the moment of death. The Sacrament of Unction is not the "last rites" as is sometimes thought; the ritual of the anointing itself in no way indicates that it should be administered merely in "extreme" cases. Holy Unction is the Sacrament of the spiritual, physical, and mental healing of a sick person whatever the nature or the gravity of the illness may be. Orthodox Christian Celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Unction The Sacrament itself calls for seven priests, seven readings from the Epistles and Gospels, seven prayers and seven anointings with oil specifically blessed during the service. Although it is not always possible to perform the sacrament in this way, the normal procedure is still to gather together as many priests and people as possible. At the end of the service the priest anoints the faithful as he makes the sign of the cross on the forehead and top and palms of the hands saying, "For the healing of soul and body." 8 ΤΟ ΙΕΡΟΝ ΕΥΧΕΛΑΙΟΝ Απόσπασμα από το βιβλίο «Το Ιερόν Ευχέλαιον» του Πρεσβυτέρου Θεμιστοκλέους Στ.Χριστοδούλου. Η ΙΣΤΟΡΙΑ ΠΕΡΙ ΤΟΥ ΕΛΑΙΟΥ Το έλαιο ήταν ανέκαθεν ένα από τα σπουδαιότερα θεραπευτικά μέσα της ιατρικής. Αυτό το εντοπίζουμε σε πολλά αρχαία ελληνικά συγγράμματα αλλά και στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη. Οι Ιουδαίοι πίστευαν ότι το έλαιον κρύβει θεραπευτικές ιδιότητες. Για τον λόγο αυτό η επάλειψη με το έλαιο έλαβε θρησκευτικό χαρακτήρα. Μάλιστα δε οι ραββίνοι το χρησιμοποιούσαν κατά την ήμερα του Σαββάτου. Οι χριστιανοί από τα χρόνια του Χριστού έκαναν χρήση του ελαίου κατά την λατρεία προσδίδοντας όμως σ αυτό ενν. το έλαιον μια πνευματική συμβολική διάσταση. Το έλαιο συμβόλιζε το "θείον έλεος", την πνευματική δύναμη και την έκχυση των δωρεών του θεού. Ο χριστιανισμός παρέλαβε την προ αυτού πράξη για το έλαιο και την εξεχριστιάνισε δίνοντάς της πνευματικό περιεχόμενο. Χρησιμοποίησε το έλαιο ως ορατή θεώρηση του αοράτου κάλλους προσδίδοντάς του μυστηριακό χαρακτήρα όπως έπραξε και με άλλα υλικά αγαθά που τα παρέλαβε από την Ιουδαϊκή λατρεία. Η θεραπευτική ικανότητα του ελαίου δεν έγκειται σ αυτό το ίδιο το αγαθό αλλά στην ευλογία και τη χάρη του Θεού που τη λαμβάνει μυστηριακά μέσω των ιερέων που καθίστανται κι αυτοί θεοφόροι με την ευχή της πίστεως και της προσευχής των. Το μυστήριο του Ευχελαίου δεν παρέχεται για την αθανασία του σώματος αυτών που το τελούν. Αυτό είναι αφέλεια. Παρέχεται όμως για την ψυχική προετοιμασία, ώστε ο άνθρωπος βιώνοντας τη μετάνοια ως γεγονός στην καθ όλου ζωή του και στην ασθένειά του ακόμη να κερδίσει τη βασιλεία των Ουρανών που είναι και ο σκοπός όλων των μυστηριακών τελετών της Εκκλησίας μας. Και φυσικά το Ευχέλαιον λειτουργεί για τη συγχώρεση των αμαρτιών των ανθρώπων. ΠΟΤΕ ΤΕΛΕΙΤΑΙ ΤΟ ΙΕΡΟΝ ΕΥΧΕΛΑΙΟΝ; Η Ορθόδοξος Ελλαδική Εκκλησία έχει ορίσει το ιερό Μυστήριο του Ευχελαίου να τελείται δημόσια για όλους τους χριστιανούς κάθε Μ. Τετάρτη της Μ. Εβδομάδος. Στη Ρωσία το Ευχέλαιον τελείται κατά τη Μ. Πέμπτη. Η συνήθεια αυτή της τελέσεως του Ευχελαίου θεμελιώνεται στην πίστη της Εκκλησίας ότι αυτό βοήθα στην ψυχική ανόρθωση των ασθενών ανθρώπων για τους όποιους τελείται το μυστήριο και όλων όσων συμπαρίστανται στην ασθένειά των, συγγενών και φίλων. Εξυπακούεται ότι της τελέσεως του ιερού μυστηρίου του Ευχέλαιου, προηγείται το μυστήριο της εξομολογήσεως, όταν αυτό είναι δυνατό. Αλλά και οι παρευρισκόμενοι, για να δεχθούν το μυστήριο του Ευχελαίου, πρέπει να εξομολογούνται, ώστε να αποβαίνει γι αυτούς μέσο θεϊκής ενισχύσεως στο έργο τους που είναι η μέριμνα και η φροντίδα των ασθενούντων. Το Ευχέλαιο καθίσταται αρωγός στο έργο της διακονίας των ασθενούντων αδελφών όχι μόνο στιγμιαία αλλά και για την επιτέλεση παντός έργου αγαθού. Για τον τελευταίο αυτό λόγο καθιερώθηκε από την Εκκλησία να τελείται δημόσια κάθε Μ. Τετάρτη σε συνδυασμό όμως με το μυστήριο της εξομολογήσεως. Έτσι και τα δύο μυστήρια οδηγούν τους χριστιανούς στο άλλο και βασικότατο μυστήριο που είναι η συμμετοχή στη θεία Ευχαριστία. Ο άγ. Συμεών αρχιεπίσκοπος Θεσσαλονίκης στο λειτουργικό υπόμνημα του περί του μυστηρίου του αγίου Ευχελαίου τονίζει το χρόνο τελέσεως αυτού, σύμφωνα πάντοτε με την εκκλησιαστική πατερική αντίληψη. Έτσι επισημαίνει τρεις φορές. α) όταν υπάρχει ασθενής, β) στην περίπτωση που κάθε πιστός επιθυμεί να προσέλθει στα άχραντα μυστήρια και γ) σε κάθε άνθρωπο που, αφού έπεσε σε αμάρτημα, εξομολογήθηκε την αμαρτία του, δέχθηκε τον πνευματικό κανόνα από τον εξομολόγο του πνευματικό πατέρα, τον εκτέλεσε και με την άδειά του προσέρχεται στο ιερό μυστήριο της θείας Ευχαριστίας. Σε όλες τις ανωτέρω περιπτώσεις το άγιο Ευχέλαιο συγχωρεί όλα τα αμαρτήματα σύμφωνα με τον απόστολο αδελφόθεο Ιάκωβο. Οι δε προσευχές των ιερέων κατά το μυστήριον του Ευχελαίου αυτό φανερώνουν: "Το δε γε ευχέλαιον αναγκαιότατον ως ιερά τελετή και των επτά μυστηρίων υπέρ των αρρωστούντων, ως παρελάβομεν, και υπέρ πιστού παντός βουλομένου προσελθείν τοις φρικτοίς μυστηρίοις, μάλλον δε υπέρ παντός περιπεπτωκότος αμαρτήμασι, και τον κανόνα της μετανοίας τετελεκότος, και προς το κοινωνήσαι σπεύδοντος ένδοσιν παρά του πατρός (του πνευματικού) ειληφότος. αφίησι γαρ η του αγίου ελαίου ιερά τελετή και χρίσις τα αμαρτήματα, ως ο Αδελφόθεος γράφει. και αι ευχαί προ τούτο συντελούσι των ιερέων". Υπάρχει η συνήθεια μερικοί πιστοί να θέλουν το Ευχέλαιο να τελείται στα σπίτια των κατά τη Μ. Τετάρτη. Το Ευχέλαιο δεν μπορεί σίγουρα να τελεσθεί σε όλα τα σπίτια των ενοριτών και μάλιστα μιας μεγάλης ενορίας 8

9 κατά την ίδια ημέρα. Στην επιθυμία αυτή διαφαίνεται η ψευδαίσθηση ότι, εάν τελεσθεί κατά τη Μεγάλη Τετάρτη, έχει μεγαλύτερη ισχύ και κάνει πιο καλό στο σπιτικό τους. Αυτό είναι πρόληψη. Αφού η Εκκλησία μια φορά το χρόνο κατά τη Μ. Τετάρτη επίσημα τελεί το μυστήριο του Ευχελαίου, αυτό σημαίνει ότι οι πιστοί κατ αυτήν την ημέρα πρέπει να προσέλθουν στο ναό και να λάβουν το Ευχέλαιο το οποίο σημειωτέον τελείται για όλους τους πιστούς. Ειδάλλως δημιουργούνται διακρίσεις. Και εξ αυτών των διακρίσεων εμφανίζονται προβλήματα στην ποιμαντική των ιερέων. Πρέπει να γίνει κατανοητό ότι οι ημέρες της Μ. Εβδομάδος είναι ημέρες προσευχής και τακτικού εκκλησιασμού. Δεν είναι καλό να προσθέτουμε στην επιβάρυνση των ιερέων κι άλλη τόση κατά τις ημέρες αυτές με τις πολύωρες ακολουθίες. Άλλωστε εάν κάποιος επιθυμεί την τέλεση του Ευχελαίου, θα πρέπει να την έχει προγραμματίσει από την έναρξη της Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής. Στην ίδια δε συνάφεια θα πρέπει να προγραμματίσει και το χρόνο της εξομολογήσεως. Πολλοί συνηθίζουν να τα αφήνουν όλα για την τελευταία στιγμή. Αυτό όμως δεν συνεπάγεται ότι θα γίνει κι αυτό που επιθυμούν, δηλ. ούτε ότι οι ιερείς θα μπορούν να ανταποκριθούν στην επιθυμία τους για τέλεση του Ευχελαίου κατά τις τελευταίες ήμερες, ούτε φυσικά ότι θα μπορούν να κοινωνήσουν προσερχόμενοι την τελευταία στιγμή στο μυστήριο της μετανοίας κι εξομολογήσεως. Για να ξεκινήσει κάποιος αθλητής τον αγώνα δεν μπαίνει απ ευθείας στο στάδιο αλλά πρωτίστως αθλείται και προπονείται. Κατά τοι ίδιο τρόπο και οι χριστιανοί, όταν ξεκινάει η περίοδος της Τεσσαρακοστής, αλλά και γενικά όταν ξεκινούν περίοδοι νηστείας, θα πρέπει να προσέρχονται εξ αρχής στο μυστήριο της μετανοίας, για να λάβουν οδηγίες περί του πως θα διανύσουν το στάδιο των αγώνων τους προκειμένου να πετύχουν το καλύτερο αποτέλεσμα που είναι η μετοχή στα άχραντα μυστήρια. Το ίδιο συμβαίνει και με μια σωματική αρρώστια. Δεν αφήνουμε τη σωματική ασθένεια να χρονίσει και μετά επισκεπτόμαστε το γιατρό, αλλά από το ξεκίνημά της τον επισκεπτόμαστε, για να μας δώσει θεραπευτική αγωγή, συνδυαζόμενη πολλές φορές με αντίστοιχη φαρμακευτική για την αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος. Το ίδιο συμβαίνει και με όλα τα μυστήρια, ιδιαιτέρως όμως με το μυστήριο της μετανοίας-εξομολογήσεως και του Ευχέλαιου. Άλλοι πάλι εκ των χριστιανών μας νομίζουν ότι το Ευχέλαιο πρέπει να τελείται μόνο κατά τη Μ. Τεσσαρακοστή. Αυτό είναι εν μέρει αλήθεια. Σύμφωνα όμως με τα όσα μας ανέφερε και ο άγιος Συμεών Θεσσαλονίκης κάθε φορά που η αγία μας Εκκλησία διανύει στάδιο καθιερωμένης νηστείας της οποίας έπεται θεία Ευχαριστία, τότε μπορεί να τελείται και το μυστήριο του Ευχελαίου. Άρα δεν τελείται το Ευχέλαιο μόνο κατά τη Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή. Τελείται και κατά τις άλλες καθιερωμένες Τεσσαρακοστές, όπως των Χριστουγέννων, τού Δεκαπενταυγούστου, των αγίων Αποστόλων. Αλλά το Ευχέλαιο μπορεί να τελεσθεί ακόμα και όποτε επιθυμεί κάποιος πιστός, εφόσον θα επακολουθήσει θεία Μετάληψη και φυσικά έχει προηγηθεί το μυστήριο της εξομολογήσεως. Τέλος, τελείται και εκτάκτως σε περιπτώσεις ασθενειών, σωματικών και ψυχικών, που δυστυχώς σήμερα ιδιαιτέρως μαστίζουν την κοινωνία μας. Άλλοι πάλι εκ των πιστών ισχυρίζονται ότι το Ευχέλαιο τελείται μόνο ημέρα Τετάρτη. Κι αυτό δεν είναι σωστό. Το Ευχέλαιο μπορεί να τελεσθεί κάθε ημέρα. Πιθανόν αυτή η αντίληψη περί της τελέσεως του Ευχελαίου κατά την ημέρα Τετάρτη έγινε εξ αιτίας παρεξηγημένης αντίληψης ότι, αφού η Εκκλησία μας το τελεί επίσημα κατά την Μ. Τετάρτη, άρα πρέπει να τελείται κατά τις Τετάρτες όλου του χρόνου. Ή επιλεγείσα ημέρα Τετάρτη από την Εκκλησία έγινε, γιατί της Μ. Τετάρτης ακολουθεί η Μ. Πέμπτη, ημέρα κατά την οποία θα προσέλθουν οι πιστοί μας να κοινωνήσουν των αχράντων μυστηρίων. ΤΟ ΙΕΡΟΝ ΜΥΣΤΗΡΙΟΥ ΤΟΥ ΕΥΧΕΛΑΙΟΥ ΔΕΝ ΑΝΤΙΚΑΘΙΣΤΑ ΤΟ ΜΥΣΤΗΡΙΟΝ ΤΗΣ ΜΕΤΑΝΟΙΑΣ-ΕΞΟΜΟΛΟΓΗΣΕΩΣ Όπως σημειώσαμε και παραπάνω το μυστήριο του Ευχελαίου τελείται υπέρ υγείας ψυχής και σώματος. Τελείται δε το Ευχέλαιον σε περίπτωση ασθενείας ή ακόμη κατά τις μεγάλες εκκλησιαστικές περιόδους όταν πρόκειται οι πιστοί να μεταλάβουν των αχράντων μυστηρίων. Φυσικά όπως σημειώσαμε πρέπει να προηγείται του Ευχελαίου το μυστήριο της μετανοίας-εξομολογήσεως. Άρα λοιπόν το ευχέλαιο δεν αντικαθιστά το μυστήριο της μετανοίας. Κάποιοι έχουν την ψευδαίσθηση ότι με την τέλεση του Ευχελαίου συγχωρούνται οι αμαρτίες τους, όσες κι αν έκαναν και στη συνέχεια προσέρχονται στο μυστήριο της θείας Ευχαριστίας, για να μεταλάβουν των άχραντων μυστηρίων. Αυτό δεν είναι σωστό. Αποτελεί πλάνη. Σύμφωνα και με τον άγιο Συμεών Θεσσαλονίκης πρώτα τελείται το μυστήριο της εξομολογήσεως, μετά του ευχελαίου και τέλος της θείας Ευχαριστίας. Αυτή είναι η πατερική γραμμή και κανείς δεν πρέπει διαφορετικά να πράττει. 9
