2 WEEKLY MESSAGE On this, the last Sunday of the Great Fast, the Church invites us to take one final look at our sinfulness. Over the past nine weeks, our eyes have been directed toward the ultimate goal of repentance and salvation. One does not take place without the other. Looking quickly at the Gospel lessons of the past nine weeks, we find that those who were saved lived not for themselves but for God. Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee It was the sinful tax collector Sunday of the Prodigal Son It was the sinful younger son Sunday of Judgment It was those who saw God in others Sunday of Forgiveness It was those who chose to forgive Sunday of Orthodoxy It was those who understood the Holy Scriptures Sunday of Gregory Palamas It was those who brought their friend to Christ Sunday of the Holy Cross It is those who willingly deny themselves and accept their cross Sunday of St John Climicus It was those who realized they needed God Sunday of St Mary of Egypt It was those who were willing to be last among their friends By now, the Church expects that we have realized our sinfulness, admitted our mistakes, and chose to return to God and take our lumps with whatever God has planned for us. Some of us may be worried that our lives are not worthy of God s forgiveness. Maybe some of us worry that our sins are too big, or that we can t possibly change this late in life. That is one blessing about the Great Fast. Today the Church brings our attention to one of the greatest sinners in the history of the Church. Mary of Egypt was a prostitute who was given a second chance by God. She devoted the remainder of her life to total repentance, if God would allow her just a chance to enter the Church. After He allowed Mary to enter the Church, she left and spent the rest of her life in the dessert. Her repentance was so complete that even wild animals respected and revered her body at the time of her death. Your sins may not be as drastic as Mary of Egypt, and you probably are not being called to live the rest of your life in the desert, but the fact remains: No matter how bad you think you may have sinned, it is not too late to repent and start fresh. It isn t too late to return to God, schedule a confession and begin a new life dedicated to God and serving others. It is the whole witness of the Great Fast. We are asked to admit our sins, return to God, seek His forgiveness, and begin our new life free from the past s sins. Nothing is too hard to forgive when it comes to God.

5 EPISTLE Hebrews 6:13-20 B rethren, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. GOSPEL Mark 9:17-31 A t that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise." HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

7 Saints and Feasts of the Week ΌΣΙΟΣ ΣΑΒΒΑΣ Ο ΝΕΟΣ Ο Όσιος Σάββας ο Νέος γεννήθηκε το 1862 στην Ηρακλείτσα της Ανατολικής Θράκης. Mεγάλωσε έχοντας βαθιά πίστη και μεγάλη ευσέβεια και προσπαθώντας να μιμηθεί την άσκηση των Αγίων της Εκκλησίας μας. Σε ηλικία 12 ετών έλαβε την απόφαση να φύγει, εγκαταλείποντας τα εγκόσμια. Κατευθύνεται στο Άγιον Όρος, ενώ αργότερα επισκέπτεται τους Αγίους Τόπους. Ελπίζοντας πάντα στην βοήθεια του Θεού, εισέρχεται στην ιερά μονή του Αγίου Γεωργίου Χοζεβά, όπου έπειτα από τριετή ενάρετο βίο κείρεται μοναχός. Διακονεί μέχρι το 1906 ως εφημέριος της Θεολογικής Σχολής του Τιμίου Σταυρού, όπου γνωρίζεται με τον μετέπειτα Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αθηνών και πάσης Ελλάδος Χρυσόστομο. Το 1916 επιστρέφει οριστικά στην Ελλάδα, μεταβαίνει στη νήσο Πάτμο, και διαμένει δύο χρόνια. Έπειτα έρχεται στην Αθήνα, όπου πληροφορείται ότι τον αναζητεί ο Άγιος Νεκτάριος, Μητροπολίτης Πενταπόλεως. Μεταβαίνει στην Αίγινα και διακονεί τον Άγιο μέχρι την ημέρα της κοιμήσεώς του. Γνώρισε την αυστηρή άσκηση του Αγίου Νεκταρίου και την απλότητά του. Έζησε το πρώτο θαύμα του Αγίου, όταν μετά την κοίμησή του τον είδε να κλίνει την κεφαλή προκειμένου να του φορέσει το πετραχήλι του και να επανέρχεται κατόπιν στην θέση της. Μεταβαίνει στην Αθήνα και κατόπιν στην Κάλυμνο, όπου μετά από περιπλάνηση στις μονές και τα ησυχαστήρια του νησιού, καταλήγει στη μονή των Αγίων Πάντων. Εκεί αρχίζει μία έντονη πνευματική ζωή. Ήταν επιεικής και εύσπλαχνος με τις αμαρτίες των άλλων, δεν ανεχόταν όμως την βλασφημία και την κατάκριση. Αξιώθηκε της ευωδίας του σώματός του εν ζωή, καθώς και το πέρασμά του ήταν ευώδες, ευωδία η οποία θα εξέλθει και από το μνήμα του μετά την εκταφή του. Χρήματα δεν κρατούσε ποτέ, η ζωή του ήταν μια συνεχής κατάσταση αγίας υπακοής. Κατ' αυτόν τον τρόπο συμπλήρωσε τις ημέρες της επίγειας ζωής του, με άκρα περισυλλογή και ιερά κατάνυξη, ενώ λίγο πριν το τέλος η τελευταία φράση του ήταν «Ο Κύριος, ο Κύριος, ο Κύριος, ο Κύριος, ο Κύριος, ο Κύριος». Η ομολογία αυτή ήταν η βεβαίωση της εν Χριστώ πορείας του. Μετά από 10 έτη, έγινε η ανακομιδή των αγίων και χαριτόβρυτων λειψάνων του ενώπιον πλήθους λαού. Ένα πυκνό νέφος θείας ευωδίας κάλυψε ολόκληρη την περιοχή και το νέο για το θεϊκό σημείο έκανε αμέσως το γύρο του νησιού. Το ιερό λείψανο του Οσίου μεταφέρθηκε σε λάρνακα, στο παρεκκλήσι του Αγίου Σάββα του Ηγιασμένου. ST. SAVVAS THE NEW St. Savvas the New is the patron saint of Kalymnos, where he lived during the last years of his life as the priest and spiritual father of the nuns of the Convent of All Saints. He was a great ascetic, confessor, iconographer and miracle-worker. He is one of the recently recognized saints in the Orthodox Church. SUNDAY OF ST MARY OF EGYPT Mary was born in Egypt. She had left home at the age of 12 to and spent the next 17 years in debauchery. Living on charity and linen-weaving, she offered her body to any man, not being forced to it by dire necessity as were so many poor women, but as though she were consumed by the fire of a desire that nothing was able to appease. Salvation came to her following a voyage to Jerusalem, where the Mother of God guided her to repentance and led her to seek peace across the River Jordan. When she arrived at the Church of St John the Baptist, she received communion in the Holy Mysteries and went to sleep on the riverbank. The next morning, she crossed the river and lived from that time on in the desert, remaining there for 47 years without ever encountering either another human being or any animal. After all these years, the first person she encountered was a holy elder called Zosimas, When he came within ear-shot, Mary, calling by name him whom she had never seen, revealed to him that she was a woman and asked him to throw her his cloak that she might cover her nakedness. At the urging of the monk, the Saint recounted to him the story of her conversion. Two years later, Zosimas returned and found the Saint's body stretched on the ground, her arms crossed and her face turned towards the East. An inscription traced on the ground by the Saint, read: "Abba Zosimas, bury here the body of the humble Mary; give what is of dust to dust, after having prayed for me. I died on the first day of April, the very night of the Passion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, after having partaken in the Holy Eucharist." After vainly trying to break up the earth with a stick, he saw a lion approaching her body and licking her feet. On the orders of the Elder, the beast dug a hole with its claws, in which Zosimas placed the Saint's body. From the hardened sinner that she had been, Mary has become a model of conversion. This is why the Holy Fathers have placed the celebration of her memory at the end of the Great Fast as an encouragement for all who have neglected their salvation, proclaiming that repentance can bring them back to God even at the eleventh hour.
