For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. He trampled death under foot by means of death; and He became the firstborn from the dead. From the maw of Hades He delivered us; and He granted the world His great mercy. APOLYTIKION for the Earthquake Christ our God, who look upon the earth and make it tremble, deliver us from the dread threat of earthquake; and send down upon us your rich mercies, at the prayers of the Mother of God, O lover of mankind. APOLYTIKION for the Holy Martyr Demetrios All the world has you, its mighty champion, fortifying us in times of danger, and defeating our foes, O Victorious One. So, as you humbled Lyaios's arrogance by giving courage to Nestor in the stadium, thus, O holy Great Martyr Demetrios, to Christ our God pray fervently, beseeching Him to grant us His great mercy. APOLYTIKION of the Annunciation Today is the beginning of our salvation, The revelation of the eternal mystery! The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin. As Gabriel announces the coming of Grace. Together with him let us cry to the Theotokos: Rejoice, O Full of Grace, The Lord is with You! Seasonal KONTAKION O Protection of Christians unshamable, mediation with the Creator immovable, we sinners beg you, do not despise the voices of our prayers, but anticipate, since you are good, and swiftly come unto our aid as we cry out to you with faith: Hurry to intercession, and hasten to supplication, O Theotokos who defend now and ever those who honor you.

An athlete is not crow ned unless he competes acc ording to the rules. It is the hardw orking farmer w ho ought to have the firs t share of the crops. Think over w hat I say, for the Lord w ill grant y ou understanding in everything. Remember Jes us Chris t, ris en from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel, the gos pel for w hich I am s uffering and w earing fetters like a criminal. But the w ord of God is not fettered. Therefore I endure ev erything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus w ith its eternal glory. Καὶ ἃ ἤκουσας π αρʼ ἐµοῦ διὰ π ολλῶν µαρτύρων, ταῦτα π αράθου π ιστοῖς ἀνθρώπ οις, οἵτινες ἱκανοὶ ἔσονται καὶ ἑτέρους διδάξαι. Σὺ οὖν κακοπ άθησον ὡς καλὸς στρατιώτης Ἰησοῦ Χρισ τοῦ. Οὐδεὶς στρατευόµενος ἐµπ λέκεται ταῖς τοῦ βίου π ραγµατείαις, ἵνα τῷ στρατολογήσαντι ἀρέσῃ. Ἐὰν δὲ καὶ ἀθλῇ τις, οὐ στεφανοῦται ἐὰν µὴ νοµίµως ἀθλήσῃ. Τὸν κοπ ιῶντα γεωργὸν δεῖ π ρῶτον τῶν καρπ ῶν µεταλαµβάνειν. Νόει ἃ λέγω δῴη γάρ σοι ὁ κύριος σύνεσιν ἐν π ᾶσιν. Μνηµόνευε Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐγηγερµένον ἐκ νεκρῶν, ἐκ σπ έρµατος αυίδ, κατὰ τὸ εὐαγγέλιόν µου ἐν ᾧ κακοπ αθῶ µέχρι δεσµῶν, ὡς κακοῦργος ἀλλʼ ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ οὐ δέδεται. ιὰ τοῦτο π άντα ὑπ οµένω διὰ τοὺς ἐκλεκτούς, ἵνα καὶ αὐτοὶ σ ωτηρίας τύχωσ ιν τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, µετὰ δόξης αἰωνίου.

4 THE GOSPEL READING The Gospel of Luke 8:26-39 At that time, as Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, there met him a man from the city w ho had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell dow n before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do w ith me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he w as kept under guard, and bound w ith chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and w as driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of sw ine w as feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the sw ine, and the herd rushed dow n the steep bank into the lake and w ere drowned. When the herds men saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people w ent out to see w hat had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from w hom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they w ere afraid. And those w ho had seen it told them how he w ho had been possessed w ith demons w as healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them; for they w ere seized w ith great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. The man from w hom the demons had gone begged that he might be w ith him; but he sent him aw ay, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the w hole city how much Jesus had done for him.

5 ΤΟ ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟΝ Κατὰ Λουκᾶν 8:26-39 Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, ἐλθόντι τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς τὴν χώραν τῶν Γαδαρηνῶν, ἥτις ἐστὶν ἀντίπ ερα τῆς Γαλιλαίας.ἐξελθόντι δὲ αὐτῷ ἐπ ὶ τὴν γῆν ὑπ ήντησεν αὐτῷ ἀνήρ τις ἐκ τῆς π όλεως, ὃς εἶχε δαιµόνια ἐκ χρόνων ἱκανῶν, καὶ ἱµάτιον οὐκ ἐνεδιδύσκετο καὶ ἐν οἰκίᾳ οὐκ ἔµενεν, ἀλλ ἐν τοῖς µνήµασ ιν.ἰδὼν δὲ τὸν Ιησοῦν καὶ ἀνακράξας π ροσέπεσεν αὐτῷ καὶ φωνῇ µεγάλῃ εἶπ ε τί ἐµοὶ καὶ σοί, Ιησοῦ, υἱὲ τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστου; δέοµαί σου, µή µε βασανίσῃς.π αρήγγειλε γὰρ τῷ π νεύµατι τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ ἐξελθεῖν ἀπ ὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπ ου. π ολλοῖς γὰρ χρόνοις συνηρπ άκει αὐτόν, καὶ ἐδεσµεῖτο ἁλύσεσι καὶ π έδαις φυλασσόµενος, καὶ διαρρήσσων τὰ δεσµὰ ἠλαύνετο ὑπ ὸ τοῦ δαίµονος εἰς τὰς ἐρήµους.ἐπ ηρώτησε δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ Ιησοῦς λέγων τί σοί ἐστιν ὄνοµα; ὁ δὲ εἶπ ε λεγεών ὅτι δαιµόνια π ολλὰ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς αὐτόν καὶ π αρεκάλει αὐτὸν ἵνα µὴ ἐπ ιτάξῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον ἀπ ελθεῖν.ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ ἀγέλη χοίρων ἱκανῶν βοσκοµένων ἐν τῷ ὄρει καὶ π αρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπ ιτρέψῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς ἐκείνους εἰσελθεῖν καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν αὐτοῖς.ἐξελθόντα δὲ τὰ δαιµόνια ἀπ ὸ τοῦ ἀνθρώπ ου εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους, καὶ ὥρµησεν ἡ ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρηµνοῦ εἰς τὴν λίµνην καὶ ἀπ επ νίγη.ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ βόσκοντες τὸ γεγενηµένον ἔφυγον, καὶ ἀπ ήγγειλαν εἰς τὴν π όλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀγρούς.ἐξῆλθον δὲ ἰδεῖν τὸ γεγονός, καὶ ἦλθον π ρὸς τὸν Ιησοῦν καὶ εὗρον καθήµενον τὸν ἄνθρωπ ον, ἀφ οὗ τὰ δαιµόνια ἐξεληλύθει, ἱµατισµένον καὶ σ ωφρον οῦν τα π αρὰ τοὺς π όδας τοῦ Ιησ οῦ, κ αὶ ἐφοβήθησαν.ἀπ ήγγειλαν δὲ αὐτοῖς οἱ ἰδόντες π ῶς ἐσώθη ὁ δαιµονισθείς.καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν ἅπ αν τὸ πλῆθος τῆς π εριχώρου τῶν Γαδαρηνῶν ἀπ ελθεῖν ἀπ αὐτῶν, ὅτι φόβῳ µεγάλῳ συνείχοντο. αὐτὸς δὲ ἐµβὰς εἰς τὸ π λοῖον ὑπ έστρεψεν.ἐδέετο δὲ αὐτοῦ ὁ ἀνήρ, ἀφ οὗ ἐξεληλύθει τὰ δαιµόνια, εἶναι σὺν αὐτῷ ἀπ έλυσε δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ Ιησοῦς λέγων ὑπ όστρεφε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου καὶ διηγοῦ ὅσα ἐπ οίησέ σοι ὁ Θεός. καὶ ἀπ ῆλθε καθ ὅλην τὴν π όλιν κηρύσσων ὅσα ἐπ οίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ιησοῦς.

10 Weekly Paraklesis Service to the Most Holy Lady Theotokos Annunciation Cathedral Norfolk Thursday s at 6:30 PM October 30th, November 6th, December 11th. St. Nicholas Church Virginia Beach Thursday s at 6 PM November 13th, November 27th, December 4th, December 18th. The most powerful tool we have to aid ourselves and one another at all times is prayer. The act of praying is a gift from God so that we can praise Him and encounter Him with our needs and concerns. Through prayer we encounter God and we come together as a people. We have, as it were, a kind of "spiritual muscle" at the center of our souls, and this muscle requires frequent and fervent exercise. Hence, with the cooperation of our sister parish, St. Nicholas in Virginia Beach, we will be offering weekly intercessory Prayer Services. These services are known as the "Paraklesis to the Holy Theotokos," where we invoke the involvement of the Mother of God in our many cares. The service is about an hour long and is very melodic in its musical presentation. Thankfully, both the English and Greek languages render our petitions with equal grace, thus allowing all members to participate in the chanting of this service. Glory to God, we are pleased to work together as sister parish, as one Church, united in providing prayer and good works for the Lord. Surely this is what the Lord would want. Come let us worship together and offer prayers for spiritual well being, good health and salvation in Christ.
