4 THE EPISTLE / Ο ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 9:6-11 Prokeimenon. Mode 1. Psalm 32.22,1 Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. BRETHREN, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 5 THE HOLY GOSPEL / ΤΟ ΘΕΙΟΝ ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟΝ The Gospel of Luke 8:41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened. 6 Communion Protocols Who can take Communion? Only Orthodox Christians who have prepared for the Sacrament. Baptized/Chrismated in the Orthodox Church Have participated in Confession (tyically once a year) Have Prayed Daily Have Fasted Wednesday & Friday Who cannot take Communion? Orthodox Christians who have been excommunicated Committed a Grave sin that has not been confessed or repented Married outside of the Church Partaken of Sacraments outside of the Orthodox Church Living in sin engaging in behavior continuously that is spiritually or socially harmful Non Christians (Muslims/Jews/Atheists) Heterodox Christians Christians of other Faith Traditions (Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, etc.) Coptic Orthodox (Unless there is no Coptic Church in the Region) You will not be asked of any of these conditions, nor will the Clergy accept second-hand accusations. But be aware, if any of these conditions apply, you answer to the Lord. Behold, I approach for Holy Communion. O Creator, burn me not as I partake; For You are Fire, which burns the unworthy, Wherefore, do You cleanse me of every stain -From the Communion Prayers

9 STEWARDSHIP MONTH Stewardship: TIME Two weeks ago I compared the Parable of the Sower to the concept of Time. The Good Soil allows the Word of God (The seed) to grow and produce much fruit. How does one make this soil good? One cannot merely toss a seed on the earth and expect it to grow. Even if it does take root, weeds will invariably grow with the seed and choke it as it grows. Therefore, the Soil must be weeded. It must be irrigated. It must raked into loose, moist particles. It must be fed with fertilizer. It must be kept in shade or sunlight at appropriate times. And time is the key. We must dedicate time to the soil so that when the seed (The Word of God) comes, it will grow and produce fruit. How do we tend to the soil of our souls? Again, TIME! You must spend time in the sunlight (the Church). You must spend time in the shade (resting from labor & fellowship). You must spend time eating food (The Sacraments). Time must be spent raking all the earth into smooth soil (Fasting & Good Works). Time must be spent watering our soul (Prayer). Time must be spent weeding all the cares of this world from our soul. All these efforts of time are necessary for the Word of God to take root. How can you dedicate your time? Volunteer! There are many opportunities to help your Church. Join a Ministry! There are many ministries that may speak to your needs. If one doesn t exist, talk to Fr. Dimitri and we can make one! Come to Church! Holy Trinity offers many services throughout the week. But even if you can only come on Sunday, come! Your children learn from your example. You need that sunlight to grow and have energy. Please fill out the Stewardship Data Form & Pledge Card! 10 STEWARDSHIP MONTH Stewardship: TALENTS Last week we saw the concept vessels. In the Orthros Gospel Jesus Christ told the disciples to be filled with the Holy Spirit. In the Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians he stated you are the Temple of the Living God. In the Gospel we witnessed that we can be filled with evil, even demons as the young man who was possessed by Legion. If we look at ourselves as a glass, we can be filled to the brim with any substance. Are we filled with the Holy Spirit? Are we useful vessels to God? We learned of the word κένωσις (kénōsis), which is the sacred practice of self emptying. How do we empty ourselves? A good first step is to take the things we enjoy doing and give them over to God. Many times, the devil tries to use our unique talents for his ends, or worse; as in the Parable of the Talents, convinces us to bury our Talent in the ground. (Please read the Parable of the Talents Matthew 25:14-30) Note the money in this parable is an allegory to the time/talents with which God has blessed you. Examples of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin were shown as examples of individuals who used their God-given talents, their Χάρισμα (Harisma) for themselves and ultimately evil. Imagine the good they could have accomplished with those talents! What are your talents? Are you good with computers? - Offer your talent to the info structure of the Church Are you an excellent cook? - Offer your talent to fellowship and outreach events Are you an accountant? - Offer your talent to budgeting and helping the finances of the Church Are you a teacher? - Offer your talent to teaching Sunday School, leading retreats, etc. Are you artistic? - Offer your talent to improve the image of our events, etc. Not sure? - Then volunteer in whatever you can Please fill out the Stewardship Data Form & Pledge Card! 11 STEWARDSHIP MONTH Stewardship: TREASURE This week s epistle states a well known fact: God loves a cheerful giver. From the example of the Widow s mite (Luke 21:1-4), we see that our gift is not supposed to be a paltry sum, a few pennies, but a genuine sacrifice. The gift we give is our sacrifice to God. An example in today s society would be someone living on welfare. The cap for Welfare is an income of $50,000 a year. That would mean giving $5,000 a year in observance of tithing. Can you imagine if 50 of our 80 stewards gave 10% of a what would make them eligible for welfare? $250,000 a year, almost twice our current annual budget. Could you imagine the good our parish could accomplish with an annual stewardship of that size? The ministries our parish could offer, the aid our parish could give to Organizations (American Cancer Society, Orthodox Missions, Support a Mission Priest, St. Basil Academy, the Martha and Mary House), the families struggling to feed their children. We would not need to worry about how to fix the air conditioning units, how to fix the roof, how to face our future challenges. Is that a lofty goal? Certainly, but not out of the question. Ask our protestant neighbors in the same financial situation as many of us find ourselves. We will be shocked as we learn that they, by and large, give 10% to God. Some will ask, what can I do? Sacrifice. If it means going out eat less, if it means not buying that expensive toy (Car, jewelry, vacation, etc.), if it means cutting back, we must do so. This is sacrifice to God. But as the epistle teaches, and as countless people can attest, when we give to God, we always receive more in return. It is not a chance occurrence but a pattern. God always rewards those who give to Him. God WILL take care of us. We simply need to trust in Him and give to Him.
