The Cathedral family thanks them for their generosity. ALL INFORMATION FOR THE APRIL ISSUE OF THE FLAME MUST BE SUBMITTED THIS WEEK! PHILOPTOCHOS Today, Philoptochos is passing a second tray in support of Hellenic College-Holy Cross. On the third Sunday of Lent, observing the Veneration of the Holy Cross, Philoptochos chapters throughout the country raise funds for Hellenic College-Holy Cross. The collected proceeds are dedicated to the operating expenses of the school. Your support is greatly appreciated. Please support the Philoptochos food drive. Non-perishable food is needed for special families within the Holy Trinity community. Some suggestions include canned foods and soups, powdered drinks, boxed biscuit or muffin mix, boxed macaroni and cheese, sugar and flour, canned tuna or chicken, canned evaporated milk. There is a collection bin in the Coffee Room. Thank you for your support. All men of the community are invited to join the Philoptochos membership roles. Thank you to all, who have renewed their Philoptochos membership for this year. If you are not currently a member, please consider joining. At this time Philoptochos takes the opportunity to remind everyone that MEN ARE IMPORTANT in the life of the Philoptochos chapter. For many years Philoptochos has enjoyed the support shown by gentlemen, who often take time away from their families to offer good works in the name of the ministry. All men of the community are invited to join the Philoptochos membership roles and to be an important part of the work done in the name of charity and philanthropy. Everyone has special talents, and the members welcome new ideas and suggestions. SPECIAL PHILOPTOCHOS MEETING MARCH 22 All members are asked to attend a very short special Philoptochos membership meeting on Sunday, March 22, following church services. Please meet in the boardroom to discuss and select an adult nominee and a youth nominee for the Archangel Michael Awards. Next Philoptochos meeting Saturday, March 28, 2015, in the Coffee Room at 10:30 am. PHILOPTOCHOS LENTEN POT LUCK DINNER Philoptochos will sponsor a Lenten Pot Luck Dinner on Friday, March 27, at the conclusion of the last Salutations of the Theotokos Service. Everyone is cordially invited to participate and share in the fellowship by offering a Lenten dish of choice. Please consider bringing your favorite Lenten salad; vegetable; pasta, rice, vegetable, or shrimp entrée; fruit pie; havla; cake; fresh fruit; or a nut, raisin, and cranberry mix. Chairpersons Mary Kontos ( ) and Helen Malachias ( ) will appreciate hearing from you so they can better coordinate the evening meal. Hopefully, you will join the other parishioners at this spiritual gathering as we anticipate and prepare for Holy Week and Holy Pascha.

2 DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE The next regular membership meeting is today, Sunday, March 15, at noon following church services. Hostesses will be Mary Ellen Grace, Deborah MacInnes, Vange Malachias, and Barbara Stavis Wolf. Agenda topics will include Palm Sunday Luncheon and fundraiser for St. Nicholas Shrine at Ground Zero in New York. Chapter dues for 2015 of $40 are now due and can be submitted at the meeting or to Membership Secretary Deborah MacInnes, Treasurer Mary Kontos, or President Barbara Stavis Wolf. GREEK FESTIVAL CHAIRPERSON MEETING WITH NANCY MOORE All Greek Festival chairpersons are asked to meet on Sunday, March 29, in the Coffee Room after Divine Liturgy. Nancy Moore will be attending. This is an opportunity for chairpersons to discuss with Nancy their various booth requests, as well as make preliminary plans, to help expedite the upcoming event. Contact Stacy Rico at with questions. GREEK FESTIVAL PASTRY WORKSHOPS Weekly Greek Festival Pastry Workshops continue. Please come help on Tuesday, March 17, and Wednesday, March 18, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Lunch is provided. PRE-GREEK FESTIVAL PASTRY SALE The Pastry Committee will sell several pastries to assist you with your paschal holiday preparations. Frozen tiropites, almond rolls, and galaktobourika will be available at $12 per dozen. Koulourakia ($6) and Easter tsourekia ($10) will also be available. You may place your order by calling Stacy Rico Monday through Wednesday or mail in your order. Order forms are available in the Narthex. Tsourekia will be ready Wednesday, April 8, at the conclusion of the afternoon Holy Unction Service. All other items will be ready Palm Sunday. The Committee looks forward to filling your order and thanks you in advance. HOLY WEEK-EASTER BOOKS A new shipment of Holy Week-Easter books has arrived. They are published in the original Greek with a new modern English translation on the opposing pages. Each is $25 and may be purchased from the Cathedral office or in the Narthex from a Parish Council member. HTC YOUTH SOCCER SESSIONS The next spring session for HTC Youth Soccer is this Friday, March 20, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Please note that Father George will be out of town and that there will be NO church service that evening. DONATIONS NEEDED FOR GREAT LENT SERVICES The flowers used today for the Veneration of the Cross were generously donated by the Cathedral Montessori School. The Cathedral family sincerely thanks the school for their consideration. Other items required for Great Lent include incense and charcoal. Contributions for these items are most welcomed. 3 Message from Father George In Celebration of Greek Independence March 25, 1821 HTC PTA cordially invites you to the GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY PROGRAM Sunday, March 22, 2015 following Divine Liturgy Hellenic Cultural Center Lenten Appetizers and Lunch, Drink, and Dessert will be served. Tickets will be sold the day of the event. Adults - $10.00 Children 12 and under - $6.00 The children have worked very hard to prepare for this event and would like to share it with everyone. GREEK SCHOOL MARCH 22 CELEBRATION Maria Huner and Stacy Rico will teach Greek folk dances today, Sunday, March 15, at 12:30 pm to the children, who are participating in the March 22 Celebration. The children that take part in the School Play and the Secret School reenactment will start practicing for the acting scenes a bit earlier. There are only two days left for rehearsals, and it is important not to miss them. FULL CAST rehearsals will take place on the following dates: Sunday, March 15 at 12:00 pm and Saturday, March 21 at 11:00 am Parents are asked to bring their children. Students need to practice walking and standing on the stage to avoid confusion. Your support and cooperation are greatly appreciated. HELLENIC DANCE PRACTICE Those interested in participating in the Hellenic Dance group should note that practice will be every Thursday at 6:30 pm and every Sunday at 1:00 pm at the Hellenic Cultural Center unless otherwise advised. THE EPISTLE St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16, 5:1-6 Save, O Lord, your people and bless your inheritance. To You, Lord, have I cried O my God. BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." THE GOSPEL Mark 8:34-38, 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.
