2 Cyprus moments in time
Cyprus, the European state, the violent segregation, two communities of the same people, its past and its present. This could be the title of the photographic exhibition of Ms Antigoni Solomonidou Droussiotou which we inaugurate here in Brussels, a few months before the official take over from Cyprus of the European Council Presidency. The 42 photographs on canvas, which are digitally printed in this booklet, create 21 pairs of mutually complementary views of a people whose segregation continues a dissonance in relation to its long history of peaceful cohabitation and in a place far too small to remain divided. The photographs, both from Cyprus past and present convey to the viewer another reality. They evoke the annoying dilemma of locating in a photograph what today the barbed wire divides. Kerynias castle on the one side and Paphos castle on the other show the similarities of a civilisation which knows nothing about borders and, at the same time, the ruthless game of the fate of a people who do not have anything to divide but who are, however, divided. My earnest thanks to Antigoni for her creation. Androulla Vassiliou Member of the European Commision
4 Cyprus moments in time
For almost thirty years I have known one side of my mother country. I was able to visit the other side approximately ten years ago, when movement to the occupied side of Cyprus was allowed. Since then, with the click of my camera, black and white moments freeze. Everyday life is recorded as a document, a call to erase partition and devastation represented by monuments, flags and symbols. When I met the scarred windmill of my family s orchard at Ayios Lucas in Famagusta, bitterness was transformed into a unique moment of lightening. A selection from these series of photographs composes the exhibition: Cyprus, Moments in Time. A synthesis of people so similar yet so different, landscapes familiar and yet so distant. At the same time these photographs document a result of war: violence, abandonment, pain, desolation. However, thankfully life reveals hope and optimism. It, patiently, prepares people to expect PEACE, right there at the bench on Ledra street, next to the central crossing point in Nicosia, the last divided European capital city. Finally, I would like to say that it is an honor to share with you in Brussels my Cyprus, Moments in Time and for this I sincerely thank the Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the Cultural Services Department at the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Cyprus as well as the Bank of Cyprus for their financial support. Μια επιλογή από αυτή τη σειρά συνθέτει την έκθεση «Cyprus, Moments in Time».
