The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15 Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. The Gospel According to Luke 8:5-15 The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." Άγιος Λουκάς ο Ευαγγελιστής Ο Άγιος Λουκάς ο Ευαγγελιστής καταγόταν από την Αντιόχεια της Συρίας και η εθνικότητα του ήταν Ελληνική. Ήταν γιατρός στο επάγγελμα, όμως γνώριζε πολύ καλά τη ζωγραφική τέχνη. Μάλιστα σε αυτόν αποδίδονται οι πρώτες εικόνες της Θεοτόκου με τον Ιησού Χριστό βρέφος στην αγκαλιά της (μία υπάρχει μέχρι σήμερα στη Μονή του Μεγάλου Σπηλαίου), καθώς και αυτές των Αποστόλων Πέτρου και Παύλου. Στη χριστιανική πίστη κατηχήθηκε από τον Απόστολο Παύλο, τον οποίο συνάντησε στη Θήβα και έκτοτε αφοσιώθηκε στο κήρυγμα του Ευαγγελίου. Περιόδευσε στη Δαλματία, Ιταλία, Γαλλία, Αχαΐα, Βοιωτία κ.α. Συνέγραψε το τρίτο κατά σειρά Ευαγγέλιο της Καινής Διαθήκης, καθώς και τις πράξεις των Αποστόλων. Λέγεται ότι πέθανε με μαρτυρικό θάνατο (κατ' άλλους ειρηνικά σε ηλικία 80 ετών), και το 357 μ.χ., το λείψανο του μετακομίσθηκε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, στο ναό των Αγίων Αποστόλων. Luke the Evangelist: Luke was an Evangelist, the writer of the third Gospel. He never met Christ in person, but in his Gospel he says that he came to know about Jesus by talking to eyewitnesses to the events of Jesus life, death, and Resurrection. Hearing those stories helped Luke to become a believer, and he wrote his Gospel so that others would come to know and love Jesus. Luke was a doctor and he traveled with Saint Paul on his second missionary journey. In fact, Paul calls Luke his beloved physician (Colossians 4:14). Because he cared for the bodily needs of others, Luke is the patron saint of doctors. He is also the patron saint of artists because it is believed that he painted a famous portrait of Mary, our Blessed Mother. In his Gospel, Luke helps us to know how concerned Jesus was for the sick, the poor, and anyone in need of help, mercy, and forgiveness. Luke tells us that Jesus came to save all people. Through Luke s Gospel, we learn how compassionate and caring Jesus was. Some of the most famous stories Jesus told are found in Luke s Gospel: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37) and the Lost Son (Luke 15:11-42). The symbol for Luke s Gospel is an ox, an animal that was often sacrificed as an offering to God in ancient times. In his writings about Jesus, Luke reminds us of the great sacrifice Jesus made to save all people through his death on the cross and his Resurrection. Luke is also the author of the Acts of the Apostles. In Acts, we learn about the coming of the Holy Spirit; the work of the Apostles, especially Saint Paul; and how the Church grew in the world. He was the one person who was said to have remained with Saint Paul during his imprisonment and until his death. We celebrate Saint Luke s service to the Church each year on October 18. We remember that his Gospel continues to help us know and love Jesus. Luke s Gospel also reminds us to look for ways to imitate Jesus by reaching out to help our brothers and sisters in need.
Άγιος Αρτέμιος Μεγαλομάρτυς: Ο Άγιος Αρτέμιος ήταν διακεκριμένος πολιτικός του Βυζαντίου και ευσεβέστατος χριστιανός. Ο Μέγας Κωνσταντίνος, εκτιμώντας τα ηθικά και πολιτικά του χαρίσματα, του έδωσε το αξίωμα του πατρικίου και τον διόρισε Δούκα και Αυγουστάλιο της Αλεξανδρείας. Το 357 μ.χ. πηγαίνει στην Πάτρα, κατ' εντολή του Αυτοκράτορα Κωνσταντίου, γιου του Μεγάλου Κωνσταντίνου, για να παραλάβει τα σεπτά λείψανα του Αγίου Ανδρέα και να τα ανακομίσει στον νεόκτιστο Ναό των Αγίων αποστόλων στην Κωνσταντινούπολη (3 Μαρτίου 357 μ.χ.). Κατά την διαμονή του στην Πάτρα και με την επίβλεψη του κατασκεύασε υδραγωγείο. Στρατοπεδευμένος στην περιοχή της Μονής Γηροκομείου ελεούσε και βοηθούσε πλήθος αναξιοπαθούντων και κυρίως γερόντων, γεγονός που δικαιολογεί την τοπωνυμία Γηροκομείο. Όταν, το 363 μ.χ., ο Αρτέμιος άκουσε ότι ο Ιουλιανός ο Παραβάτης βασάνιζε τους χριστιανούς στην Αντιόχεια, ήλθαν στα χείλη του τα λόγια του ψαλμωδού Δαβίδ προς το Θεό: «Κύριε, πνεύματι ἡγεμονικῷ στήριξόν με» (Ψαλμός Ν' (50), στ. 14). Κύριε, στήριξε με με σκέψεις σταθερές και θέληση ισχυρή, που να κυριαρχεί μέσα μου και να με κατευθύνει στην υπεράσπιση του αγαθού με θάρρος. Πράγματι, ο Αρτέμιος, με τη δύναμη που του έδωσε ο Θεός, πήγε αμέσως στην Αντιόχεια και με παρρησία ήλεγξε ευθέως τον Ιουλιανό για τις παρανομίες του κατά των χριστιανών. Ο Ιουλιανός, που δεν περίμενε τέτοια στάση από αξιωματούχο, τον συνέλαβε και τον μαστίγωσε αλύπητα. Έπειτα του έσπασε τα κόκαλα με πέτρες, και τελικά τον αποκεφάλισε. Το Ιερό λείψανο του Αρτεμίου παρέλαβε κάποια διακόνισσα, η Αρίστη, που το μετέφερε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, στο ναό του προφήτου Προδρόμου. Life of the Saint: He was one of Constantine s generals. When he saw the Cross he pledged himself to Jesus Christ and was baptized. With the Empire now united, Artemios was charged with the responsibility of taking the relics of St. Andrew and St. Luke to Constantinople. He carried out his orders with joy and was honored to be able to carry the sacred relics of these saints. Recognized as an able military leader, Artemios became the Governor and Ambassador of the Emperor in Egypt. He held these positions for a number of years and protected the Eastern region of the Empire. The politics and intrigue that surrounded the Imperial Court in Constantinople led to the rise of Julian the Apostate as Emperor. He desired that the Empire turn from its Christian direction and return to paganism. When Julian declared war on the Persians, he summoned Artemios and his army to meet him in Antioch. Artemios was obedient to the command and joined the Emperor. While in Antioch, Artemios witnessed two priests being persecuted by order of the Emperor Julian. Outraged, Artemios went to the Emperor and said: "Why are you so ruthlessly torturing these innocent and dedicated men, and why are you putting pressure on them to turn back from the Orthodox Faith?" Artemios intercession saved them from death and they were exiled to another land. As for Artemios, however, he was stripped of his military rank, beaten, and imprisoned. While in prison, he was tortured and was finally beheaded in the year 362.
Ο Άγιος Γεράσιμος είναι ο προστάτης της Κεφαλονιάς. Ήταν απόγονος της αριστοκρατικής οικογένειας των Νοταράδων και ο προπάππους του ήταν ο τελευταίος Πρωθυπουργός του Βυζαντίου. Μετά τις σπουδές του στα πιο ονομαστά ιδρύματα της εποχής, ο Άγιος Γεράσιμος έγινε μοναχός στο Άγιο Όρος και στη συνέχεια ταξίδεψε στα Ιεροσόλυμα όπου έμεινε για δώδεκα χρόνια. Το 1555 μ.χ έφτασε την Κεφαλονιά και πέρασε πέντε χρόνια σε μια σπηλιά στη Λάσση ως ερημίτης. Το 1560, μετακόμισε στο οροπέδιο των ομαλών, όπου επισκεύασε το παρεκκλήσι που υπήρχε εκεί και ίδρυσε μια μονή που την ονόμασε 'Νέα Ιερουσαλήμ'. Σήμερα η μονή είναι καλύτερα γνωστή ως η μονή του Άγιου Γεράσιμου και είναι το ιερότερο μέρος στην Κεφαλονιά. Η διαδρομή από το Αργοστόλι μέχρι τη μονή είναι 11 χιλιόμετρα. Για να φτάσετε στη μονή περνάτε από το χωριό Ροζάτα, όπου μπορείτε να κάνετε στάση και να απολαύσετε τη θέα του Ληξουρίου και του Αργοστολίου. Στη συνέχεια, περνάτε μέσα από τη ζώνη της Ρομπόλας και τα χωριά Φραγκάτα και Βαλσαμάτα. Μετά την πεδιάδα των 40 πηγαδιών, φτάνετε στη μονή. Η μονή είναι χτισμένη σε μια εκπληκτική τοποθεσία που περιβάλλεται από αμπέλια. Η καινούργια εκκλησία χτίστηκε μετά το σεισμό του 1953. Στο εσωτερικό της φυλάσσονται τα λείψανα του αγίου σε ασημένια σαρκοφάγο. Απεβίωσε στις 15 Αυγούστου 1579, αλλά η ονομαστική εορτή γιορτάζεται στις 16 Αυγούστου. Επιπλέον γιορτάζεται και στις 20 Οκτωβρίου επειδή όταν ο τάφος του ανοίχτηκε τον Οκτώβριο του 1851, το σκήνωμά του ήταν άθικτο. Θάφτηκε και πάλι και ο τάφος ανοίχτηκε για δεύτερη φορά στις 20 Αυγούστου 1852, αλλά το σκήνωμά του ήταν ακόμα ανέπαφο. Στο εσωτερικό της παλιάς εκκλησίας, βρίσκεται η είσοδος στο ερμητήριο του αγίου. Έχει πρόσβαση μέσω ενός μεσαίου μεγέθους ανοίγματος, αλλά παραδόξως όλοι μπορούν να περάσουν ανεξαρτήτως μεγέθους. Αξιοσημείωτο είναι επίσης ότι παρόλο που οι επισκέπτες χρειάζεται να γονατίσουν όσο βρίσκονται στο ερμητήριο, υπάρχει η θεωρία ότι δεν λερώνονται από το λασπωμένο δάπεδο. Λόγω της δημοφιλίας του αγίου, η εκκλησία αυτή είναι πακόσμιος χώρος προσκυνήματος και πολλοί άνθρωποι συγκεντρώνονται κάθε χρόνο για να τιμήσουν τη μνήμη του αγίου. Το σκήνωμά του είναι ανοικτό για το κοινό πέντε φορές το χρόνο. Στις 16 Αυγούστου και στις 20 Οκτωβρίου γίνονται δύο λιτανείες για να μεταφερθεί το λείψανο του αγίου στον γέρικο πλάτανο που φύτεψε ο ίδιος ο άγιος και βρίσκεται κοντά στην εκκλησία. Ανεξάρτητα από τα πιστεύω σας, η επίσκεψη στη μονή έχει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον και μπορείτε να θαυμάσετε τους θησαυρούς της και την πολιτισμική κληρονομιά του όμορφου νησιού της Κεφαλονιάς!
Agios Gerasimos is the patron saint of Kefalonia. He was the offspring of the noble family of Notaras and his great-grandfather was the last Prime Minister of the Byzantine Empire. After being educated in the most respectable institutions of the time, Agios Gerasimos was ordained a monk at Mount Athos and then travelled to Jerusalem where he stayed for twelve years. In 1555 AD he arrived in Kefalonia and spent five years in a cave in Lassi as a hermit. In 1560, he moved to the plateau of Omala where he renovated the existing chapel and founded a convent which he named New Jerusalem. Nowadays the convent is more well-known as the convent of Agios Gerasimos and is the most sacred place on Kefalonia. The journey from Argostoli to the convent is 11 km. To reach it you pass by the village of Rosata where you can have a stop and enjoy the view of Lixouri and Argostoli. Then, you drive through the Robola zone and the villages of Fragata and Valsamata as well. After the plain of the 40 wells, you arrive at the convent. The convent is built in a stunning location surrounded by vineyards. The new church was built after the earthquake of 1953. Inside the church the saint s relics are kept in a silver relic case. He died on 15 August 1579, but his nameday is celebrated on 16th August. It is also celebrated on 20th October because when his tomb was opened on October 1851 his remains were intact. He was buried again and the tomb was re-opened on 20th August 1852, but his relic was still the same. Inside the old church, there is the entrance of the saint s hermitage. It can be accessed through a medium-size hole, but surprisingly enough everyone can go through despite their size. It is also worth saying that even though visitors might need to kneel while in the hermitage, they allegedly don t get dirty from the muddy floor. Because of the saint s popularity, this church is a global pilgrimage and many people are gathered annually to honour the saint s memory. His relic is opened to public five times a year. On 16th August or 20th October, two litanies take place to take the relic to the old plane tree near the church that the saint planted by himself. Despite your religion, it would be interesting to visit the convent and see its treasures or even join the litany as all these are part of the traditions and the cultural heritage of the beautiful island of Kefalonia!
