(Hebrews 2:1) The parables which our Lord spoke to us give us some indication as to how we will be judged and found worthy or not to enter into, and participate in, the Kingdom of Heaven. As we heard on the Sunday of the Last Judgment, we will be judged by our works. Actually we are judged not so much on what we do, but on our attitude and intention which either indicate our predisposition toward a Godly life and thus the possibility of living in heaven, or a disregard for a Godly life. In order to fit into Heaven our whole being body, soul, and spirit must be prepared during this life. We must always remember that in the hereafter there will be no opportunities for change or growth; only this earthly life provides us with time during which change is possible. We learn from the many holy fathers who have preached, taught, and written that the key to the difference between God and man, and between life and death as we know it, is change. God is changeless, but we in our sinfulness must change. This is the root meaning of repentance: change of heart, change in attitude. Saint Isaac of Syria observes, Every rational creature suffers changes without number, and every man is different from hour to hour. The key question, then, is whether we are changing toward God, or away from Him. Saint John Cassian wrote, There is nothing of itself enduring, nothing unchangeable, nothing good but God alone, while every creature to obtain the blessing of eternity and immutability, aims at this not by its own nature, but by the participation of its Creator, and His Grace. In other words, change toward God can only come about with His help and through His grace. Saint Augustine of Hippo similarly tells us, We are changeable, and we are changed for the better by becoming partakers of the Word (Jesus Christ): the Word is changeless, and suffered no change for the worse when He became a partaker of the flesh, by means of a rational soul. Am I becoming more Christ-like? Or am I drifting farther away from God-likeness? Christ became man, not diminishing His Godliness but raising up our broken humanity to Himself. He offers this possibility to each person as a free gift of grace; all we have to do is to accept it through attendance at the Divine Services, through participation in the Mysteries of the Church, through reading spiritual books, and through living a Christ-centered life in all our daily activities. Am I doing these things? Or am I failing to prepare myself for heaven? 1

At Great Vespers The Proemial Psalm. Great Litany. At the Kyrie Ekekraksa Resurrection Stichera 3 Εἰς τὸν Μεγἀλον Ἐσπερινόν Ὁ Προιµιακός. β Stichos 1 Στίχος α Bring my soul out of prison that I may confess Your name, O Lord. You ascended the Cross to raise up with Yourself those who sit in darkness, O Christ, the victor over Hades; have mercy on us, almighty Savior Who are free among the dead, and Who overflow with life from the origin of light. Stichos 2 Στίχος β The righteous shall wait patiently for me until You reward me. Today Christ has trampled upon death and has risen as He said; He has given joy to the world that we might all shout in praise: Have mercy upon us, O almighty Savior, the Fountain of life and unapproachable Light. Stichos 3 Στίχος γ Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. You, Lord, are present in all creation; where shall we sinners hide? In heaven? You dwell there. In Hades? You trample upon death there. In the depths of the sea? Your hand is there, O Master. We therefore seek refuge in You, and worship You pleading: have mercy upon us, O You Who rose from the dead. Στιχηρὰ Ἀνατολικὰ Stichos 4 Στίχος δ Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication. We rejoice in Your Cross, O Christ, and we praise and glorify Your resurrection. You are indeed our God, and we have no other beside You.

Stichos 5 Στίχος ε If You should mark iniquities, Lord, O Lord, who shall stand? For with You there is forgiveness. We bless the Lord always and praise His resurrection; He shattered death by death for our sake. Stichos 6 For Your name s sake I have patiently waited for You, O Lord; my soul has waited patiently for Your word, my soul has hoped in the Lord. Glory to Your might, O Lord, for You have stopped the one who holds the power of death; You have renewed us by the Cross, bestowing life and incorruptibility upon us. Prosomoia Stichera of the Hierarch Tone 2 What hymns of praise 4 Ἐὰν ἀνοµίας παρατηρήσῃς, Κύριε, Κύριε τίς ὑποστήσεται; ὅτι παρὰ σοὶ ὁ ἱλασµός ἐστιν. Στιχηρά Προσόµοια τοῦ Ἱεράρχου Ἦχος β Ποίοις εὐφηµιῶν ᾄσµασιν Stichos 7 Στίχος ζ From the morning watch until night, from the morning watch let Israel hope in the Lord. What hymns of praise shall we sing in honor of the hierarch? He is the trumpet of theology, the herald of the fire of grace, the honored vessel of the Spirit, the unshaken pillar of the Church, the great joy of the inhabited earth, the river of wisdom, the candlestick of the light, the shining star that makes glorious the whole creation. Stichos 8 Στίχος η For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption; and He shall redeem Israel out of all his iniquities. (Repeat) What hymns of praise shall we sing in honor of the hierarch? He is the trumpet of theology, the herald of the fire of grace, the honored vessel of the Spirit, the unshaken pillar of the Church, the great joy of the inhabited earth, the river of wisdom, the candlestick of the light, the shining star that makes glorious the whole creation.

Stichos 9 Στίχος θ Praise the Lord, all you nations; praise Him, all you peoples. What words of song shall we weave as a garland, to crown the hierarch? He is the champion of true devotion and the adversary of ungodliness, the fervent protector of the faith, the great guide and teacher, the welltuned harp of the Spirit, the golden tongue, the fountain that flows with waters of healing for the faithful, Gregory the great and marvelous. Stichos 10 Στίχος ι For He has made His mercy to prevail over us, and the truth of the Lord abides to the ages. With what words shall we who dwell on earth praise the hierarch? He is the teacher of the Church, the herald of the light of God, the initiate of the heavenly mysteries of the Trinity, the chief adornment of the monastic life, renowned alike in action and in contemplation, the glory of Thessalonika; and now he dwells in heaven with the great and glorious martyr Demetrios, whose relics flow with holy oil. β Angels in heaven sing praises, of Your resurrection O Christ our Savior. Make us worthy on earth, to glorify You, in purity of heart. The Lord reigns; He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed, He is girded with strength. You demolished the bronze gates of Hades and crushed its bars, for You are an almighty God Who raised up mankind. Wherefore we cry to You in unison: Glory to You Who rose from the dead, O Lord, glory to You. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Christ was nailed on a Cross and placed in a grave when He wished to raise us from the ancient fall; it was He Whom the myrrhbearing women sought, wailing with tears and saying: Woe to us, Savior of all, how did You agree to occupy the grave? And how were You stolen after lying there willingly? How were You removed, and where was Your body hidden? Appear to us as You promised, and stop our tears! Behold, as they lamented an Angel cried out to them, saying: Cease wailing, and tell the Apostles that the Lord is risen, granting the world forgiveness and great mercy. β The sepulcher had been opened, and Hades was lamenting, and Mary cried out to the Apostles in hiding, Come out, O laborers of the vineyard, and preach the message of the resurrection; the Lord has arisen and granted the world His great mercy. Standing by Your sepulcher was Mary Magdalene, O Lord, and she was weeping loudly, and mistaking You for the gardener said to You, Where have you hidden everlasting life? Where have you laid Him Who sits on a throne of Cherubim? Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. Why do you mingle the ointments with your tears full of pity, O women disciples? Thus the Angel who was shining in the tomb cried unto the myrrh-bearing women, See for yourselves the tomb and understand; for the Savior has risen from the sepulcher. Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. Unto Your tomb, very early in the morning, did the myrrh-bearers hasten lamenting. But the angel appeared unto them and uttered, The time for lamentation has ended; weep no more. But announce the Resurrection to the Apostles. Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments. The myrrh-bearing women, who had come with their spices to Your sepulcher, O Savior, heard the voice of an Angel speaking unto them, Why do you account among the dead the One Who lives? Rejoice, messenger of the uncreated Godhead; rejoice, reprover of created folly. Rejoice, height impossible to climb, that tells of God s nature; rejoice, depth hard to scan, that speaks of His energy. Rejoice, for you have rightly proclaimed God s glory; rejoice, for you have denounced the opinions of evildoers. Rejoice, torch that shows us the sun; Rejoice, cup filled with nectar. Rejoice, for through you the truth has shone forth; rejoice, for through you falsehood has been plunged into darkness. Rejoice, O preacher of grace! freely bestowed resurrection on the substance of our mortal humanity; for He is the Savior of all, Resurrection and Life, and the God of all things. Resurrection Oikos Read (Tone Plagal 2) We believers venerate and praise in song Your cross and tomb, O Giver of Life; for as almighty God You have belayed Hades, O You Who live forever; You tore the gates of Hades to shreds, and as God You have razed the might of death. So we, the earth-born, avidly praise in doxology the One now raised, Who destroyed the deadly power of our foe; You have resurrected everyone who believes in You; You have rescued the world from the serpent s fangs, and You have snatched us from allure to the hostile one: You Who alone have the ability to do this. Hence we piously sing the praises of Your resurrection, by which You saved us, as the God of all things.
