Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11 Welcome to Saint Nicholas on this Sunday, May 27, 2018 Today we commemorate: Holy Pentecost The Holy Hieromartyr Helladius John the Russian of Evia Theodora the Virgin-martyr & Didymos the Martyr EPISTLE READING Prokeimenon. Mode Plagal 4. Psalm 18.4,1 Their voice has gone out into all the earth. Verse: The heavens declare the glory of God. The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11 WHEN THE DAY of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontos and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God."

GOSPEL READING The Gospel According to John 7:37-52; 8:12 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." Nikodemos, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee." Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

What God Has Done In Your Life It is so exciting to see the new families at the church and to watch it grow. Families with children of all ages and backgrounds. I can t help but notice the Moms. I see the struggles to keep the children quiet and attentive to mass; and not disruptive to others. This takes me back to an earlier time in my life when my boys were young. I worried about them so very much. I said to myself, they did not ask to come into this world. It is my responsibility to give them a good, solid foundation. I wanted to start them out right. I know that without God s help and the strength of the Holy Spirit, I could not have made it. Looking back, it is more obvious to me at this age, looking back to recognize how God intervened in my life. To see that He gave me the strength to manage a full-time job; and the needs of my boys. Frankly, He stood by me when I doubted him. I assumed that I was in control and would have to make things happen. Ha! My message today and the major reason for writing this story, is to give the Mothers and Fathers out their strength and hope. To appreciate the fact that God does have a plan for their families. And, that when they are feeling down, to let them know that their guardian angels and the saints are watching over them. They will help them. And, don t forget that Mary can intercede on your behalf to her Son, Jesus. Finally I along with your fellow parishioners are praying for all of you too. Like the Holy Family, some of you have major challenges today while others may have them tomorrow. Either way, God bless you and stay strong. Ann L. Raditsas Psalm 91:11 For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways. 2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. The Word of God is full of Gods promises to us. He will never leave us. His power is in His Holy Spirit living in us. His discipline is in giving us a sound mind to follow His will. And Love the greatest of all the greatest commandment, to love God with all our hearts, mind and soul and to love one-another. Thank you, Ann, for your story, and reminding us that we re never alone. Rosemary

STEWARDSHIP CORNER Stewardship 2018 During the next few weeks we will be discussing the principles of Orthodox stewardship so that we might have a better and more complete understanding of our Stewardship Ministry. There are six principles and we will be looking at each one in the coming weeks. 1. Spiritual offering to God in Thanksgiving is the basis of stewardship in Orthodoxy. The summit of our spiritual offering of the Eucharistic Liturgy. Key to this understanding is the realization by Orthodox Christians that their eternal relationship with God as well as their day to day life experiences and materials wealth can be offered in thanksgiving to Godspiritually and tangibly, in a representative fashion, in the ecclesial Eucharist. This is the fulfillment of the priestly vocation of men and women leading to communion with God and theosis.* *THEOSIS Union with God. The final destination and ultimate home of the human soul. May 24,2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters, It is with humble honor that I accept the church s nomination as the St. Nicholas annual Greek Festival s chair this year. This nomination has filled me indeed with a great sense of pride; I would like to thank Rev. Fr. Lesko and the entire Church committees members for this singular honor to serve the church and the community. Please allow me to invite you to a kick off meeting at the church on Thursday June 7 th at 6:30 pm. The meeting s duration should not exceed two hours. At the meeting, the hope is to achieve the following: 1-Introduce myself and get a chance to meet every one of you. 2- Inquire as to how I can help make this a fun and successful experience. This is a grand endeavor and entails lots of hard work, along with lots of fun, I will solicit your guidance and all what you desire to share with me regarding this undertaking. I believe that with God s blessings and your support that I can lead this task to success. Yours in Christ, Sam Daher St. Nicholas Greek Festival Chair

Statement on the Texas School Shooting D A T E : May 21, 2018 C A T E G O R Y : M e t r o p o l i t a n s M e s s a g e s A U T H O R : H i s E m i n e n c e M e t r o p o l i t a n G e r a s i m os Beloved in the Lord, The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace. Psalm 29:11 I just returned from spending the weekend in Brookline, Massachusetts for the 76th Commencement at Hellenic College Holy Cross School of Theology. Seeing the eager faces of our graduates and their families brought me great joy. At the same time, my heart was deeply troubled by the senseless act of violence that occurred recently in Santa Fe, Texas. I could not help but think of the parents who will never have the opportunity to see their children graduate. A community is torn apart. Families are inconsolable. Students and teachers are traumatized. Education is a treasured gift we can give our children. They have the opportunity to expand their horizons, learn new skills, and chart a course for their promising futures. This week the hope for tomorrow was tragically taken away when another school shooting took the lives of 10 people at Santa Fe High School in Texas. Among them were eight students and two teachers. Thirteen more have sustained injuries.

Every day parents send their children off to school, and every day they expect them to come home. Children go to school to learn, and instead they are confronted with these acts of violence. Stories of students huddling in closets, texting and calling their parents to tell them I love you just in case they do not make it out alive should not be one of the lasting memories from high school. Sadly, our children are having to grow up too fast. Through the influence of the internet and social media, compounded by violence throughout the world, they are seeing and experiencing more than they should at their age, and being robbed of their childhood. The young man who shot his classmates has been identified as Greek Orthodox. While we are blessed to have the true faith, we do not have all the answers when it comes to helping children who are at the brink of despair. What we can do is to have faith, to pray together as a family, to talk openly and honestly, listening to your children and showing them love, patience and compassion. Let us not dwell only on this tragedy. Rather, we must use this as an opportunity to teach our children about safety, to let them know that someone cares and will listen to them and provide support so they can to turn to us, and especially to Christ, for guidance and love. Please keep the families of those whose lives were tragically lost in your prayers that they will be comforted by God s grace and peace. We must also remember the students who witnessed this horrific violence, that their hearts may be healed as they continue to raise their voices imploring for safety in our schools. Beseeching the Lord s watchful protection over you and your loved ones, and praying for peace, I remain, With Love in Christ, + G E R A S I M O S Metropolitan of San Francisco Photo courtesy of Steve Gonzales/Houston Chronicle via AP
