Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Reverend Father Dean J. Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH 44113 216-861-0116 Sunday, September 9, 2018 Sunday before Holy Cross Exaltation of the Holy Cross September 14th Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, when she was already advanced in years, undertook, in her great piety, the hardships of a journey to Jerusalem in search of the cross, about the year 325. A temple to Aphrodite had been raised up by the Emperor Hadrian upon Golgotha, to defile and cover with oblivion the place where the saving Passion had been suffered. The venerable Helen had the statue of Aphrodite destroyed, and the earth removed, revealing the Tomb of our Lord, and three crosses. Of these, it was believed that one must be that of our Lord, the other two of the thieves crucified with Him; but Saint Helen was at a loss which one might be the Wood of our salvation. At the inspiration of Saint Macarius, Archbishop of Jerusalem, a lady of Jerusalem, who was already at the point of death from a certain disease, was brought to touch the crosses, and as soon as she came near to the Cross of our Lord, she was made perfectly whole. Consequently, the precious Cross was lifted on high by Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem; as he stood on the ambo, and when the people beheld it, they cried out, "Lord have mercy." It should be noted that after its discovery, a portion of the venerable Cross was taken to Constantinople as a blessing. The rest was left in Jerusalem in the magnificent church built by Saint Helen, until the year 614. At that time, the Persians plundered Palestine and took the Cross to their own country (see Jan. 22, Saint Anastasius the Persian). Late, in the year 628, Emperor Heraclius set out on a military campaign, retrieved the Cross, and after bringing it to Constantinople, himself escorted it back to Jerusalem, where he restored it to its place. Epistle Ἀπόστολος Sunday before Holy Cross Prokeimenon. Mode Plagal 2. Psalm 27.9,1 O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18 Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen. Προκείμενον. Ήχος πλ. β'. Post-Nativity of the Theotokos; Sunday preceding the Elevation of the Holy, Precious and Life- Giving Cross; Commemorating of Ioakim and Anna, Parents of the Theotokos, Hymn of the Feast Ἡ γέννησίς σου Θεοτόκε, χαράν ἐμήνησε πάσῃ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ ἐκ σοῦ γάρ ἀνέτειλεν ὁ Ἥλιος τῆς δικαιοσύνης, Χριστός ὁ Θεός ἡμῶν καί λύσας τήν κατάραν, ἔδωκεν τήν εὐλογίαν καί καταργήσας τόν θάνατον, ἐδωρήσατο ἡμῖν, ζωήν τήν αἰώνιον. Your nativity, O Theotokos, has brought joy toall the earth's habitations; because from you has shone forth the Sun of the Righteouness, Christ Jesus our God. And having loosened the curse from us, he gave the blessing; and he abolished the power of death, and bestowed upon us, life eternal. A host of Angels descended upon your tomb, and those guarding it fell down mortified; and in the tomb stood Mary, bewildered and searching for your undefiled Body. You bounded up Hades, never been hurt by him; you met with the Virgin, and granted life to her. O Lord who rose from the dead, glory to you. Apolytikion of Synaxis of the Holy Ancestors of God Τῶν δικαίων Θεοπατόρων σου Κύριε, τήν μνήμην ἑορτάζοντες, δι' αὐτῶν σε δυσωποῦμεν, Σῶσον τάς ψυχάς ἡμῶ ν. As we celebrate the memory of Thy righteous ancestors, O Lord, through them we beseech Thee to save our souls. Apolytikion of the Church To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mystery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announceth the good tidings of grace. Wherefore let us also with him cry to the Mother of God: Hail! Thou that art full of grace; the Lord is with thee. By your holy nativity O most undefiled one, Joachim and Anna were freed from the scorn of childlessness, and Adam and Eve from death corruption. This is the feast now observed by your people, who from the guilt of their errors, were delivered as they cry out to you: the barren one bears the Theotokos, and our life's sustainer. 3

Gospel Sunday before Holy Cross The Gospel According to John 3:13-17 The Lord said, "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him." Today Join us for coffee and Refreshments in our lower level social hall. FATHER DEAN S MESSAGE Commit your way to the Lord Trust in Him, and He will act Psalm 37.5 Dearly Beloved in the Lord: The month of September is the month in which our Christian Orthodox Church celebrates the beginning of the New Ecclesiastical Year. In the same spirit in which I send this letter, I extend my prayer to God that the year will be filled with good health, renewed spiritual strength, along with dedicated and inspirational Stewardship. The truths and values of our Faith are our responsibility. These are principles we should continue to cultivate and understand so that we may apply them to ourselves and to our children. Let us never forget that our children look upon us as the example regarding their learning and direction in life. We must view our Church, not simply as a community but as THE EUCHARISTIC COMMUNITY. Jesus Christ, our Divine Teacher, teaches that the holy Eucharist is continuous. Jesus offers His Holy Body and Precious Blood so that He may always be with us and that we may always be with Him. For this reason He said: He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in Him (John 6:56). It is imperative that we walk hand in hand in one unity on the road of Christian Orthodoxy and to live with goodness, righteousness, and truth, enlightened by the Holy Spirit. The beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year is a time to begin this new effort. The effort must be directed toward the spiritual development of ourselves and our children. No one should remain outside of the life of our Parish. We must do something different for ourselves during the New Ecclesiastical Year. We must learn to bring into sharp focus and to have a strong awareness of our Christian conscience, our history, and our sacred Tradition, and our Church. May the Blessing of God always be with you, +Fr. Dean Dimon 6

It started with what I thought was a simple explanation. But he didn t get it. So, I tried again to make it even simpler. And still the quizzical look on this PhD. s face wouldn t go away. He didn t understand what i was trying to say. Frustrated, I told him Your just too educated to understand! With that, he smiled, and asked some questions that helped me a great deal. My grandmother use to say about a particular man in her church that had a lot of education that he was educated beyond his intelligence. So, why is it that a great deal of education can actually hinder understanding? Look at our lesson today in Luke 10:16-21: The Lord said to his disciples, He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me. The seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name! And he said to them, I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven. In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. Our Lord Jesus sends out His disciples to start spreading the news that the Kingdom of God is near! And He tells them that they are His voice. If they are rejected, it s Him that s being rejected and the Father Who sent Jesus in the first place. That s some profound connection, don t you think? Hello Everyone, If you are interested in the significance and meaning of questions such as this, please join us for the first of this season's study group sessions. We will meet on Monday, September 10th, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the media room(most likely), which is accessible through the classroom entrance, on the lower level of the school building. Back on November 2nd of 2015, we started these sessions under the title: From Principles to Practices - An exploration of Orthodox practices as But who are these disciples? They are from the ordinary and the regular people. Jesus didn t choose them from the religious elite. He chose people like me and you. Why you may ask. Because the besetting sin of many of us who think we already know everything we need to know blinds us to our real need for God s mercy and grace. Why do you think people don t come to Church? Don t they know what s going on during liturgy? Don t they know that God Himself has asked them to come and eat His Supper with Him? Don t they know that mercy and grace are being offered to their confused and chaotic lives? Well, maybe they do and maybe they don t know. But that is exactly what s happening when we gather to pray together. We are being invited to be transformed by God s grace. And the only reason I can think of why anyone would purposefully miss this opportunity is that they either don t know about it or they think they don t need it. And yet, God Himself reveals this truth to the simplest among us because they can hear and many times we, who think we know, are deaf to this gracious invitation to mercy and grace. Today, are you willing to hear God s invitation to you to be transformed by mercy and grace, or has your life been cluttered with so much information you can t hear that still, small, Voice calling you home? God s will is to call everyone to Himself, to form them into such a person of life and peace that they take on the very likeness of Jesus Christ. But far too many of us have been educated beyond our intelligence and we so fill our lives with other priorities that we miss this simple invitation from God. No wonder it s so very challenging to be Orthodox on Purpose. understood in the daily Epistle and Gospel readings (of the Church). In those almost three years, I have been blessed to receive great encouragement and deeper understanding of our Faith. I am very grateful for all of you that have participated; I hope to see you there this coming Monday, as we embark on a new Ecclesiastical year of learning and living our Faith. Sincerely, Mike Boyeas 9

Dear Parents, Serving in God s Altar is indeed an honor. The Altar is called the Holy of Holies so this is a very sacred place. As Altar boys they will be assisting Fr. Dean, Metropolitan Savas, and any visiting Clergy during Divine Services. The participation of your young boys is invaluable and very important to the smooth practice of the Holy services. Not only do they have a wonderful opportunity to serve the Church, but they are also presented with a unique experience to see the services from a different perspective. This is a very serious commitment and your boys should enter the Altar with faith and the upmost respect. Scripture Readings concerning the Altar. Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart, for you know what great things He has done for you. 1 Samuel 12:24 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. John 12:26 Prayer for an Altar Boy O King of Glory, for to serve Thee is a great and awesome thing, even to the Heavenly Powers. 12

It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the new born child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child protecting it from all danger. Through his prayers, God will grant the child the necessary illumination to become a zealous member of the Church and an ardent follower of Christ. SEPTEMBER 1 IS THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW ECCLESIASTICAL YEAR. Each month we will be acknowledging those celebrating their nameday in our monthly bulletin. If by chance we accidentally miss someone's nameday, we ask that you please contact the Church Office so that we may correct our records. We extend our prayers to all those celebrating September Namedays and beseech our heavenly Father to grant them many years. September 1 Sts.
