Although Holy Communion and other Sacraments are offered only to baptized and chrismated (confirmed) Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church, all are invited to receive the Antidoron (blessed bread) from the priest at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. The Antidoron is not a sacrament, but it is reminiscent of the agape feast that followed worship in the ancient Christian Church. After the Divine Liturgy this morning please join us in the Church Hall for fellowship and refreshments. Please complete a Visitor s Card before you leave today and drop it in the offering tray, or give it to one of the parishioners after the service, or mail it to the Church Office. 1

The Sunday Epistle Reading Sing praises to our God, sing praises. Verse: Clap your hands, all you nations. The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians (6:1-10) Brethren, working together with him, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. The Sunday Gospel Reading The Gospel According to Matthew 25:14-30 The Lord said this parable: "A man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more. So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.' He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth." As he said these things he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" STEWARDSHIP AS OF JANUARY 28, 2019 Our 2019 Stewardship drive is off to a great start. We have 73 Stewards as of January 2019 compared with our goal of 160 for the year. Please help us meet our goal early in the year by pledging your support. Your time, talents and treasury are critical to the success of our Ministries. Please give prayerful consideration to your 2019 contribution as soon as possible. Stewardship is the primary source of the funding for our Ministries and operating obligations. The Operations Fund pays all Church expenses except for the mortgage payment. The Building Fund includes all Building Fund donations and fundraisers (e.g., Taste of Greece, Gyro Feast). The Building Fund pays our mortgage which is $12,713.36/month. 5

WHAT IF? Everyone increased their giving by half of a percent of income? Stewardship would increase to $210,000 meeting our goal and taking pressure off of our Festival. Everyone increased their giving by one percent of income? Stewardship would increase to $262,604 covering our entire Operations budget and allow us to use the Festival for the mortgage. Everyone increased their giving by one and a half of a percent? Stewardship would increase to $315,125 covering our entire Operations budget, allow us to use the Festival for the mortgage and make some very needed repairs. Welcome & Hospitality Welcome and hospitality volunteers strengthen our community of faith by providing a warm welcome to all and a point of contact for visitors, prospective church members and members before and after the Divine Liturgy. We are looking for parishioners who would be willing to serve with the Parish Council members in the Narthex. This easy but meaningful ministry helps build our community of faith by helping all who worship with us feel welcome. Questions? Want to help? Contact John Varelas at johnvarelas@gmail.com or see him during the social hour in the hall after Sunday worship. Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God." (Romans 15:7) Volunteer Needed Please Help A beloved parishioner of St. Barbara s who passed away several years ago bequeathed her townhome to our Church. This generous gift, however, requires some work so that it is in condition to sell and then needs to be sold so that we can use the funds for the needs of St. Barbara Church. Our treasurer, Catherine Wilson, has been doing the coordination but needs assistance. We need a volunteer who can coordinate with the realtor and others as needed so that we can sell the property. We are not asking for someone to paint walls or refinish cupboards, just handle the coordination with the other parties. This would be an ideal opportunity for a retiree or someone who has availability on weekdays to give of their time to greatly help their ChurchIf you are interested or can help, please contact Father Stavroforos (919-491-2565, fatherstavroforos2012@gmail.com) or Catherine Wilson (919-923-6658, stbarbtreasurer2018@gmail.com). 6

Spanakopita Assembling Day February 23 rd Hard to believe that 2019 is here, and that we're already starting preparations for the St. Barbara s Greek Festival on May 4 th & 5 th. With a busy spring ahead, and Easter falling in late April, we re getting a jump on spanakopita preparations this year. We will be assembling spanakopitas on Saturday, February 23 rd, starting at 10am at the church hall. We re aiming to make 75 large pans, so we could use all the help we can get. I know everyone s schedules are busy, and your time is valuable, but even if you can only spare an hour or two, please come by. If you can make it, please bring a small bowl or sauce pan to hold melted butter, and a pastry brush. That will help ensure we have enough equipment for all the workers. Finally, if you can please let either Evelyn Panos (mamapan@aol.com), Theky Pappas (tedtheky@aol.com), or me know if you re able to come, so we ll have some idea of how many helpers to expect, that would be much appreciated. Or just drop in, we re flexible, and we ll definitely put you to work. Hope to see you on Saturday February 23 rd! Many thanks, Cindy Cindy Paliouras cindy.paliouras@gmail.com or cindy.paliouras@progress.com Theky Pappas tedtheky@aol.com Evelyn Panos mamapan@aol.com 7

St. Barbara Greek Dance Troupe - 2019 Season Starts! Dear St. Barbara Families, Youth dance practice started on January 26 in preparation for this year s festival on May 4 and 5. If your child is interested in participating and you have not already registered, please contact Keith and Alexia Rheinhardt (keithalexia@gmail.com) or Hrisavgi (Chrys) Mangum (hdkondilis.mangum@gmail.com) Here are some frequently asked questions: When can children start dancing? We recommend at least 5 years of old, but have been known to make exceptions. If you are unsure please ask us. When is practice? Our youngest group practices on Saturday at 1 pm before Greek school. This year we have dancers in that group ranging from 4-6. We have two other groups that practice after Church on Sunday. The middle group are ages 7-10. The older group are ages 10-18 (see complete schedule below). What does it cost? We don t currently charge for the class. We are volunteers that do this for the members and children of St. Barbara as our stewardship. What about costumes? The church has an existing inventory of costumes. We also have a small budget. We will provide guidance later in the season on what you will need for the festival, but most of the items can be found in a typical wardrobe. You may need to buy shoes if we do not have something already available. Is class participation mandatory? We have busy schedules too, so we understand conflicts arise. We ask that students attend as many practices as possible. We ll plan to see you at every practice unless you let us know otherwise, but please just let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.
