Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America 8-10 East 79th Street, New York, New York
Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America 8-10 East 79th Street, New York, New York Encyclical of Archbishop Demetrios for Thanksgiving Day Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4:6) Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we commemorate Thanksgiving Day, a special holiday in the history and life of this nation, we do so with grateful hearts to the One who blesses us abundantly with grace and life. We praise our great and mighty God who knows and provides for our needs, who fills our lives with joy and hope, who brings us comfort in our times of struggle, and who assures us with the promises of eternal life. When we commune with Him and offer our prayers of thanksgiving for all that He gives to us, we have no need for anxiety or worry. From day to day and year to year the circumstances of our lives will change. Challenges will come. Great joy and happiness will be experienced. Dear family members and friends will leave this temporal life. New relationships will begin. Through all of this, we are encouraged by the Apostle Paul to have no anxiety about anything because our trust is in our Creator and Redeemer. For the Orthodox Christian, the response to both the joys and struggles of life is this: in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. In faith we respond to all of the circumstances and events of life with prayer and supplication. We turn to God. We seek His will and His guidance. We overcome the fear of the unknown with prayer of the heart. We vanquish the anxiety of uncertainty by calling on the name of the Lord. But our prayers are not supplications marked by worry, impatience, or resignation. They are infused with the spirit and power of thankfulness. They are filled with grateful praise and adoration of our God who loves us and gives us salvation. Our prayers echo the affirmation of the Psalmist who sang, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (Psalm 18:2) In a moment of life when anxiety and fear could consume us, our requests to God for His provision in our time of need, our prayers to Him should be filled with thanksgiving. Our supplications should reveal the depth of our faith in the almighty power of God. This is the tremendous witness of this day of Thanksgiving. Certainly, it is a time of fellowship with family and friends. However, it is also a day that commemorates the way we live our lives each day. It is a day that affirms the attitude we should have in all things. We give thanks in our worship. We give thanks to one another in the bonds we share in Christ. We give thanks to those who offer compassionate and sacrificial service. We are thankful when we receive tremendous blessings. May we also be thankful in each moment, offering our prayers and gratefulness to God, joining with the heavenly hosts offering blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might to our God for ever and ever! Amen (Revelation 7:12). With paternal love in Christ, DEMETRIOS Archbishop of America

The world has changed much since the year 1919. Technology, science and inventions have progressed at an accelerated rate since that time. We began the 20th Century with the infancy of airplanes, automobiles and radio and now have space travel, computers, smart phones, the Internet, and medical advances too numerous to mention. The Greek Orthodox Church in America has also grown greatly since the early 1900 s. The Orthodox Church first arrived on these shores to minister to the Greek Orthodox faithful that were emigrating to the United States of America. These early settlers arrived in this New Land with great determination and hope, and a desire to establish parishes where they could offer thanksgiving to God for the great opportunities that their new homeland had to offer. They saved coins, sent money to family in Greece and other parts of the world, built churches, learned how to read and write English, established businesses, began families, and supported fellow immigrants and their new neighbors. They banded together to assist each other as they sought to establish firm foundations in this country. As current members of the Saint Barbara community we are inheritors of the sacrifices made by our forefathers and foremothers. Through our active participation in the Church we are able to build on their strong foundation of faith and offer God a portion of the personal blessings that He has so graciously granted to us. We are called to emulate the dedication of the Saints; to praise God; educate our faithful; minister to our neighbors; assist the needy; visit those who suffer; and live our lives according to the example that Christ has set for us now and for generations to come. I pray that God continues to bless you and your family and grants you all a wonderful Thanksgiving. Faithfully, Father Peter Rev. Peter J. Orfanakos

The more I dedicate my efforts, time, and expertise to this community, the more I see how many committed and dedicated parishioners we have. Everyone cares for the development and enhancement of our Church community. We have accomplished a lot under the extraordinary guidance of Father Peter, Father Joel and Father Steve! I cherish every moment working with them! In addition, a heart warming thank you to all of the Parish Council members for their continued hard work and commitment. I also want to thank Lea for helping me on this trip of faith and commitment to our Saint Barbara Parish. I welcome you to our Annual Dinner Dance and pray that you enjoy the evening! Look around you how our Saint Barbara family has grown, how much we have accomplished working together as a true community of faith and let s all embrace the challenges in the future. Saint Barbara is looking over us and is helping us to keep improving and enhancing our church for our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren!!! And as we prepare to celebrate Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, keep Him in your hearts and keep your faith in Him strong. I wish you all to have very happy, healthy, and joyous holiday season! Thank you! In Christ, Maria Diamantis Maria Diamantis
