SACRAMENTS AND BLESSINGS BLESSINGS OF INFANTS Forty days after birth, a child and its mother come to church to receive a 40 Day Blessing, imitating Christ who was presented in the Temple 40 days after He was born. Please call the church office to arrange this blessing. BAPTISMS Please call the church office to schedule Baptisms. Plan ahead! there are some days when Baptisms are not performed. Keep in mind that there should be only one Godparent and that a child is supposed to be given but one name when he or she is baptized. WEDDINGS Please arrange an appointment with Fr. Dean at least eight months before the proposed wedding date to allow time for all necessary marriage preparation. CONFESSION Confessions are arranged by appointment. Please call the church office to schedule Confession. MINISTRY TO PERSONS WHO ARE SICK Orthodox Christians who would like to receive Holy Sacraments but are unable to attend church (hospitalized or at home) should contact the church office so Holy Sacraments can be administered to them. Please inform the church office if your loved one is hospitalized! Most hospitals no longer inform us when they receive patients from our parish. MEMORIAL SERVICES Memorial Services are offered for the eternal rest of persons who have fallen asleep in the Lord. Customarily, these services are offered at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at 3 years. When three years have passed, the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls. DID YOU KNOW?... OUR CHURCH S TEACHING ABOUT CREMATION The New Testament teaches that the body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit. The body is further sanctified by the incarnation of Christ God becoming Man in the body. Consistent with this teaching, the body is an integral part of the whole person, and the Church teaches and expects the resurrection from the dead of the body and the soul, when God s Kingdom comes in its fullness. The Church considers cremation to be the deliberate desecration and destruction of what God has made, and insists that the body be buried for the natural process to take place. As the denial of the resurrection, in cases where there is intention for the body of a deceased person to be cremated, a church funeral is not allowed, either in the church, or the Funeral home or any other place. Additionally, memorial services with kolyva are not allowed, since the significance between the kernel of wheat and the body has been intentionally destroyed. 2

School s out; Graduation ceremonies are done; Jr. Olympics and our Memorial Day Family Picnic are now memories.. If you did not make it to our Family Picnic, you missed a great time! Crowley Park is a beautiful facility with great playgrounds and shelter areas for eating, and everyone had a wonderful day! Our Phase 3 Committee has been meeting to define the needs and features that should be included in the Phase 3 expansion of our facilities! They have also interviewed architects and will choose the architect look for an announcement soon! to design our new facility! It s getting exciting! The next time you come to church, you may notice something different. Thanks to a generous donation from one of our stewards, new iconography is being installed in the lower dome of our church. As we know, iconography is not decoration, but windows to heaven that inspire us in our worship experience. We are so very grateful to our donor! It would be nice to have more donors and add additional scenes sometime soon! And now, all our attention turns to our Big Greek FOOD FESt! One of the most important ways to make our Fest successful is with donations of the supplies that we need. For this reason, we have posted a big donation board in our Community Center (and you received a copy in the mail), listing nearly all the items that we need. We ask you to look it over maybe there is something you would like to donate! Manpower and womanpower is also vital to the success of our Fest, before, during and after! Please plan to help make the souvlakia and set up our tents on Thursday, July 17; and to offer your help for one or two shifts during the Fest. We also would be very grateful for your help at cleanup on Monday and Tuesday, July 21-22! We are so grateful to those parishioners who schedule their summer vacation around the Festival so that they can be able to help. This is greatly appreciated! COMMUNITY NEWS ARISTOTLE PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN is accepting registrations for the 2014-15 school year. Have you purchased your ticket yet? OUR BIG GREEK FOOD FEST OF NILES will take place July 18-20 this summer, and planning has already begun. Of course, we will need much help, and we are always looking for new ideas and new people to get involved! OUTREACH COMMITTEE FOOD DRIVE for the Niles Township Food Pantry, which assists over 3500 people in need each month. There will be a red bin in the community center for your donations. Food items include: canned fruit/ vegetables, bottled/canned juice and soups, cereal, oatmeal, mac & cheese, pasta, spaghetti sauce, rice, tuna, peanut butter and jelly, canned/dried beans, coffee and tea. Also needed are non-food items which include: razors, shaving cream, shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash and feminine products. Infant and child items include: baby food/formula, diapers, wipes, notear shampoo, baby lotion, juice and milk boxes, Cheerios, fruit snacks, and fruit/pudding cups. Donations will be transported to the food pantry weekly. Monetary donations also accepted. Any questions, please contact Tina Skoubis or Mary Athans. DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE...The Outreach Committee is working on a project to bring a tasty meal and a friendly visit to members of our Saint Haralambos community who have difficulty getting out of the house. Παρακαλούµε να επικοινωνείτε µε το γραφείο της εκκλησίας εαν κάποιος συγγενής σας είναι στο νοσοκοµείο! Τα νοσοκοµεία πλέον δεν µας πληροφορούν όταν έχουν αρρώστους από την ενορία µας. ΜΝΗΜΟΣΥΝΑ Επιµνηµόσυνες δεήσεις γίνονται για την αιώνιον ανάπαυση των τεθνεώντων. Συνήθως, αυτές οι δεήσεις γίνονται κατά τις 40 ηµέρες, τους 6 µήνες, τον 1 ον χρόνο και τον 3 ον χρόνο. Όταν έχουν περάσει τρία χρόνια, είναι πιο αρµόζον να ενθυµούµεθα τους αποθανόντας κατά τα Ψυχοσάββατα. 5

John will be attending DePaul University and will be pursuing a degree in Computer Graphics. Daniel Bjorklund is a 2014 graduate of Niles West High School. Daniel will be attending DePaul University and will be seeking a degree in Business. Konstantina Alexandra Chaniotakis graduated this spring from Glenbrook South High School. She will be attending Loyola University and has not yet selected a major. Kriztina Dagrizikos graduated this spring from Glenbrook North High School. Kriztina will be attending the University of Iowa where she will be pursuing a degree in Physical Therapy. Alexandra Daskalopoulos graduated this spring from Niles West High School. Alexandra will be attending Illinois Weslyan University where she will study for a degree in Political Science. Mary Elli Demertzis graduated this spring from Glenbrook South High School. Mary Elli will be attending the University of Illinois at Champaign. Her major is undecided but she is interested in the Pre-dental track. Jenna Grivas graduated this spring from Prospect High School. Jenna will be attending Boston University and studying in the College of Health and Rehabilitation with aspirations of becoming a physical therapist. Alexander Kais graduated this spring from Wheeling High School. Alexander will be attending Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin where he will be pursuing physical therapy. Eleni Kontos graduated this spring from Illinois State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Community Health Education. Anna Laskaris graduated this spring from Maine South High School. Anna will be attending the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she will be study for a degree in Biology with the hope of future studies in Medicine. Madeline Merageas is a 2014 graduate of Adlai E. Stevenson High School. She will be attending Tulane University in New Orleans to study Finance and Political Scinece Maria Sarantopoulos graduated this spring from Niles West High School. Maria will be attending Oakton Community College and hopes to become a Special Ed Teacher. Antonia Stroponiatis graduated this spring from Maine South High School. Antonia will be attending DePaul University where she will be pursuing a degree in Finance and International Business. Stavroula Therios graduated this spring from Glenbrook South High School. She plans to attend Oakton Community College and has not yet selected a major. Valerie Yannias graduated this spring from Niles North High School. Valerie s future plans are to attend Elmhurst College. Angeline Yutakis graduated from Wheeling High School. In the Fall, she will be attending Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Michael Zavos graduated this spring from Maine South High School. Michael plans to attend Oakton Community College in the fall. Yianni Karatasios graduated this spring from Glenbrook South High School. Yianni will be attending Oakton Community College and hopes to pursue a degree in Mathematics.
