Message from the President of the Board The purpose of the Association is to positively engage in action, the common educational culture of the alumni of American universities. Our activities have an academic orientation and cover contemporary subjects with Greek or American guests. These activities aim to strengthen ties and offer a venue for debate among our members and also offer their contributions on issues that are on the forefront of public debate. Following the last elections, the Executive Board includes the following members: President: Mr. Nikos Sp. Pilarinos Coordination with Universities: Mr. Dr. Karteris Member: Mrs. Noni Grenda - Bitzidou The lectures and events organized in the recent years by the American Universities Alumni Association in Northern Greece are centred around scientific research and academia, geopolitics and economic development, environmental science, and when possible the arts. Our social events are organized on a biannual basis and include the happy hour get-together, the traditional Pita Cutting and Thanksgiving. Our members share a common American educational background and culture and are active professionally and academically in Thessaloniki and Northern Greece and are all active contributors in their field. The insight of our lecturers is not the only aspect of our events. The ability for participants to interact with them following every lecture and the active debate that follows is always the highlight of our events. Some of our past events include: Sustainable Economic Development: A Vision for and South. Our guest speaker for the day was Vice Minister of Finance Mr. Christos Folias. The discussion was chaired by Nikos Filippou, President of the American University Alumni Association. Research, technological innovation and environmental science; the contribution to economic development in Thessaloniki and Northern Greece. Speakers included Secretary for Research and Development in the Ministry of Development, Professor Giannis Tsoukalas. Professor Christos Zerefos, Chairman of the National Observatory, General Secretary of the International Ozone Society and Honorary President of the American Universities Alumni Association. The discussion was chaired by Nikos Filippou. The European Union enlargement with ten new countries. Jointly organized with the Cosntantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy (CKID). Speakers included the President of CKID, Dr. Arvanitopoulos, and Dean Ilias Kouskouvelis. The discussion was chaired by Nikos Filippou. American foreign policy in the Balkans in President Bush s second term. Organized with the American Consulate in Thessaloniki, and the Constantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy. Speakers included Mr. John Sitilides, President of the and Head of the South East Europe Project at the for Scholars, Ms. Olympia Tsiampiri, President of the Northern Greece chapter of CKID, Mr. Leonidas Kouidis, President of the chapter of the American Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, and Professor Ilias Kouskouvelis. The legal framework of environmental protection. Speakers included Professor Christos Zerefos, and Honorary President at the Council of State, Mr. Mihalis Dekleris. Environment and water management in Lake Koronia. Speakers included Professor Thom Chrisman of the of and the Vice President of our American Universities Alumni Association in, Dr. Georgios Zalidis. Professor Dimitris Nanopoulos was the keynote speaker at our Thessaloniki Governor s Mansion lecture. Dr. Nanapoulos is Professor at the. He is Chairman at the National Council for Research and Development, and represents in the European Organization for Nuclear Research. U.S.A. Ambassador Honourable Charles Ries, spoke at a full house gala dinner with great success, about the future and the challenges of American investments. Professor Tom Krimigis, member of the Athens Academy, Head Emeritus Professor of the Space Department of John Hopkins University, Head Scientific NASA program, spoke about the future of the space program. Nobel award winner, member of the Athens Academy and President of National Observatory of Athens Mr. Zerefos and famous violin solist of Mr. Ch. Gallileas, gave a performance at the on Climate and Art in approx. 1000 people audience, at the Music Hall in Thessaloniki. Professor of the Department of Archaeology at University of Thessaloniki Andreou Stelios, spoke about the pre history of Thessaloniki from the year 5000 500 BC. Professor and Head of the Department of Communication at University of Illinois in Chicago Zizi Papacharissi, spoke about Social media, social people. President of the Hellenic American University, and former President of the Democratic Party of the State of New Hampshire U.S.A. Chris Spirou and Associate Professor of the Department of International and European Political Studies at University of Macedonia Thessaloniki Theodosis Karvounarakis, spoke about President Kennedy, the renewal in international and Greek reality. The Ambassador of U.S.A. Daniel V. Speckhard, honored with his presence the farewell summer happy hour, Sailing at the Yacht. Nikos Filippou President

Πραγματοποιήθηκε με ιδιαίτερη επιτυχία η ιδιαίτερη επιστημονική και με ταυτόχρονη μουσική, η παρουσίαση της παραγωγής ενέργειας από ήλιο και νερό με τον ερευνητή και καθηγητή του Α.Π.Θ., διευθυντή του Ι.Τ.Χ.Η.Δ. του ΕΚΕΤΑ Θεσσαλονίκης Θανάση Κωνσταντόπουλο (Βραβείο Descartes 2006) εμπνευστή της πολυβραβευμένης καινοτομικής διεργασίας πράσινης ενέργειας HYDROSOL, μαζί με ταυτόχρονη μουσική από ένα από τα καλύτερα Blues-Rock σχήματα της Ευρώπης, τους Nick Dounoussis and the Backbone. Παρευρέθησαν η Γενική Πρόξενος των Η.Π.Α. στη Θεσσαλονίκη Catherine Kay, ο Γενικός Πρόξενος της Τουρκίας στη Θεσσαλονίκη Hussein Ozdemir, ο Πρόεδρος της Αμερικανικής Γεωργικής Σχολής Παναγιώτης Κανέλλης, ο Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος της ΕΥΑΘ Νίκος Παπαδάκης και πολλοί φίλοι του Συλλόγου και η διασκέδαση κράτησε μέχρι αργά το βράδυ.
THANKSGIVING PARTY Tuesday 7 th December, Kitchen Bar Πραγματοποιήθηκε με μεγάλη επιτυχία και με μεγάλη προσέλευση κόσμου στο Kitchen Bar, στο λιμάνι, η εκδήλωση για το Thanksgiving των Αποφοίτων Αμερικανικών Πανεπιστημίων Βορείου Ελλάδος. Υπήρχαν γαλοπούλες της Αμερικανικής Γεωργικής Σχολής. Ο κόσμος ήρθε νωρίς και κάθισε μέχρι τις τελευταίες πρωινές ώρες, με κέφι και πάρα πολύ καλή διάθεση.
ΕΠΙΣΚΕΨΗ ΣΤΟ ΟΙΝΟΠΟΙΕΙΟ ΚΟΚΚΙΝΟΣ ΣΤΗ ΝΑΟΥΣΑ, 17/10/2010. Ο Πρόεδρος Νίκος Σπ. Φιλίππου και το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο των Αποφοίτων Αμερικανικών Πανεπιστημίων, διοργάνωσαν ημερήσια ξενάγηση, στο Οινοποιείο «Κόκκινος» στη Νάουσα. Η συμμετοχή ήταν ιδιαίτερα θερμή. Μετά από την περιήγηση και την τσιπουροοινοποσία», ακολούθησε μουσική από χάλκινα και χορός. Το κέφι κράτησε μέχρι αργά το απόγευμα. Στην ξενάγηση παρευρέθησαν: Η Γενική Πρόξενος των Η.Π.Α. στη Θεσσαλονίκη κα. Catherine Kay με την οικογένεια της, τα μέλη του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου Νίκος Σπ.
