14 ΕΠΣΕΜΒΡΙΟΤ: Η ΤΨΩΙ ΣΟΤ ΣΙΜΙΟΤ ΣΑΤΡΟΤ Τὸ ἔτος 326 ἡ Ἁγία Ἑλένη πῆγε στὴν Ἱερουσαλὴμ γιὰ νὰ προσκυνήσει τοὺς Ἁγίους Τόπους καὶ νὰ εὐχαριστήσει τὸ Θεὸ γιὰ τοὺς θριάμβους τοῦ γιοῦ της Μ. Κωνσταντίνου. Ὁ Θεῖος ζῆλος, ὅμως, ἔκανε τὴν Ἅγια Ἑλένη νὰ ἀρχίσει ἔρευνες γιὰ τὴν ἀνεύρεση τοῦ Τιμίου Σταυροῦ. Ἐπάνω στὸ Γολγοθὰ ὑπῆρχε εἰδωλολατρικὸς ναὸς τῆς θεᾶς Ἀφροδίτης, τὸν ὁποῖο γκρέμισε καὶ ἄρχισε τὶς ἀνασκαφές. Σὲ κάποιο σημεῖο, βρέθηκαν τρεῖς σταυροί. Ἡ συγκίνηση ὑπῆρξε μεγάλη, ἀλλὰ ποιὸς ἀπὸ τοὺς τρεῖς ἦταν τοῦ Κυρίου; Τότε ὁ ἐπίσκοπος Ἱεροσολύμων Μακάριος με ἀρκετοὺς Ἱερεῖς, ἀφοῦ ἔκανε δέηση, ἄγγιξε στοὺς σταυροὺς τὸ σῶμα μίας εὐσεβέστατης κυρίας ποὺ εἶχε πεθάνει. Ὅταν ἦλθε ἡ σειρὰ καὶ ἄγγιξε τὸν τρίτο σταυρό, ποὺ ἦταν πραγματικὰ τοῦ Κυρίου, ἡ γυναῖκα ἀμέσως ἀναστήθηκε. Ἡ εἴδηση διαδόθηκε σὰν ἀστραπὴ σὲ ὅλα τὰ μέρη τῆς Ἱερουσαλήμ. Πλήθη πιστῶν ἄρχισαν νὰ συρρέουν γιὰ νὰ ἀγγίξουν τὸ τίμιο ξύλο. Ἐπειδή, ὅμως, συνέβησαν πολλὰ δυστυχήματα ἀπὸ τὸ συνωστισμό, ὕψωσαν τὸν Τίμιο Σταυρὸ μέσα στὸ ναὸ σὲ μέρος ὑψηλό, γιὰ νὰ μπορέσουν νὰ τὸν δοῦν καὶ νὰ τὸν προσκυνήσουν ὅλοι. Αὐτή, λοιπόν, τὴν ὕψωση καθιέρωσαν οἱ ἅγιοι Πατέρες, νὰ γιορτάζουμε στὶς 14 Σεπτεμβρίου, γιὰ νὰ μπορέσουμε κι ἐμεῖς νὰ ὑψώσουμε μέσα στὶς ψυχές μας τὸ Σταυρὸ τοῦ Κυρίου μας, ποὺ ἀποτελεῖ τὸ κατ ἐξοχὴν «ὅπλον κατὰ τοῦ διαβόλου». SEPTEMBER 14: EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS A tradition which took shape early and was definitely established in the Sixth century reports that Saint Helen, the mother of Emperor Constantine, rediscovered near Golgotha the three crosses which served to execute Christ and the two thieves. The healing of a dying woman permitted Bishop Makarios to recognize, as being the Lord's Cross, the one whose contact effected the miracle. The Holy Cross was preserved in the Basilica of the Resurrection until May 4, 614, the date on which the Persians carried it away after having taken the city of Jerusalem and destroying the Basilica. In 628, Emperor Heraclius defeated Chosroes and brought the Holy Cross back to Jerusalem. Heraclius took the venerable wood upon his shoulders and carried it back to Calvary with great pomp. According to legend, upon reaching the door of the church, the Emperor, magnificently dressed and wearing gold, was stopped by an invisible force. Zachary, the Bishop of Jerusalem, said to him: "Be careful, Emperor, that with these ornaments of triumph, you don't imitate sufficiently the poverty of Jesus Christ and the humility with which He carried His Cross." The Emperor laid aside his splendid clothes to dress himself in an ordinary cloak, and with bare feet, he was able to continue on his way. The site where tradition places the discovery of the Holy Cross by Saint Helen is venerated in the crypt of the Holy Resurrection, in Jerusalem. This commemorative chapel was made form part of an ancient drain which existed in the time of Our Lord in Jerusalem. Filled up later on, it was used by Constantine's architects in the crypt of the basilica. A part of the Cross, brought to Rome in the Sixth century, was exposed for the veneration of the faithful by order of the oriental Pope Sergius I (687-701), in the Church of the Savior. That is why, equally in the East and the West, the feast of the Holy Cross had a considerable importance in the liturgical calendar from this epoch. It is made on Good Friday which is a direct reference. But, whereas the feast of Good Friday insists more on the historic event of Christ's Redemption, in His sufferings and death, today's feast more particularly represents for us the glorious aspect of this event, consequently, the instrument of execution on which the Lord died. The Church calls to mind for us in the Office the Old Testament signs, the heralds of the Cross: the tree of Eden, by which we were lost (the Cross was meant to save us); Noe's ark which accomplished the salvation of the just (the Cross affected the same to sinners); Jacob crossing his hands to bless his son Joseph; Moses extending his arms to open in the Red Sea a door of salvation to the Israelites, then throwing some wood into the waters of Mara to sweeten their bitterness; the same Moses striking the rock with his staff to make life-giving water spring forth, and praying, with hands crossed, for the victory of the Jewish people over Amalec; the rod of Aaron; the brazen serpent, the predisposition in the Cross taken by the Jewish people around the Ark of the covenant... The Cross is the instrument of the passion, the stool upon which the Lord rested His feet, the trophy of victory, the rampart of the Church, the cure of all ills, the honor of Christians. Nevertheless, the texts of the Divine Liturgy maintain still more the spirit of the sorrowful Passion of the Lord, abandoned by His Father on the Cross, "a scandal for the Jews and a folly for the Greeks" (that is, the pagans). http://www.rongolini.com/synseptember.htm#september%2014 4

Σπρλά αθνύσ ηελ έμεο εξώηεζε" «Απηό δελ είλαη αξθεηό, δελ ζα ζσζνύλ απηνί νη άλζξσπνη κε ηα θαιά ηνπο έξγα»; Πξέπεη νπσζδήπνηε λα δώζσ ηελ απάληεζε. Όρη, δελ ζα ζσζνύλ κόλν κε ηα θαιά έξγα. Γηαηί δελ ζά ζσζνύλ; Γηαηί έηζη είπε ό Κύξηνο θαη Θεόο καο Ιεζνύο Φξηζηόο, όηαλ «επεξώηεζε... λνκηθόο, πεηξάδσλ απηόλ θαη ιέγσλ" δηδάζθαιε, πνηα εληνιή κεγάιε ελ ρσ λόκσ; ό δέ Ιεζνύο εθε αύησ' αγαπήζεηο Κύξηνλ ηνλ Θεόλ ζνπ ελ όιε ηε θαξδία ζνπ.,, απηή εζηί πξώηε θαη κεγάιε εληνιή, δεπηέξα δε όκνηα αύηε' αγαπήζεηο ηνλ πιεζίνλ ζνπ ώο ζεαπηόλ» (Μη. 22, 35-39). Αλ ε πίζηε ζηνλ Θεό θαη ε αγάπε πξνο Απηόλ είλαη ε πξώηε θαη ε ζπνπδαηόηεξε εληνιή ηνπ λόκνπ" αλ ε δεύηεξε εληνιή γηα ηελ αγάπε πξνο ηνλ πιεζίνλ πεγάδεη απ' απηή ηελ πξώηε, θαη αλ ε αγάπε πξνο ηνλ πιεζίνλ παίξλεη ηελ δύλακε ηεο από ηελ αγάπε πξνο ηνλ Θεό, ηόηε απηό ζεκαίλεη, όηη γηα λα ζσζεί θαλείο πξέπεη κε όιε ηελ θαξδηά ηνπ λα αγαπήζεη ηνλ Θεό, δηόηη απηή είλαη ε πξώηε θαη ε ζπνπδαηόηεξε εληνιή ηνπ λόκνπ. Μπνξεί λα ππάξρεη θάηη πην μεθάζαξν απ' απηό ηνλ ιόγν; Αλ δελ πηζηεύνπκε κε 'όιε ηελ θαξδηά καο ζηνλ Θεό, αλ δελ βαθηηδόκαζηε, αλ δελ θνηλσλνύκε ηνπ Σώκαηνο θαη ηνπ Αίκαηνο ηνπ Φξηζηνύ, ηόηε ε ζσηεξία γηα καο δελ ππάξρεη. Βιέπεηε, κόλν ηα θαιά έξγα δελ αξθνύλ γηα λα ζσζνύκε! Ξέξνπκε όηη θαη νη άπηζηνη θάλνπλ θαιά θαη δίθαηα έξγα. θαη ηόηε δεκηνπξγείηαη ε εξώηεζε' πώο λα θξίλνπκε ηα θαιά έξγα πνπ θάλνπλ νη άπηζηνη, πνηα είλαη ε άμηα ηνπο; Βέβαηα, όια ηα θαιά έξγα πνπ θάλνπλ απηνί νη άλζξσπνη έρνπλ ηελ άμηα ηνπο, ε νπνία είλαη κεγάιε. Τν δερόκαζηε αιιά πξέπεη λα μέξνπκε όηη ππάξρεη δηαθνξά κεηαμύ ησλ θαιώλ έξγσλ πνπ θάλνπλ νη άπηζηνη θαη απηώλ πνπ θάλνπλ νη άλζξσπνη, νη νπνίνη κε όιε ηελ θαξδηά ηνπο πηζηεύνπλ ζηνλ Θεό. Πνηα είλαη ε δηαθνξά; ε δηαθνξά είλαη ε εμήο" ππάξρεη πιήζνο αλζξώπσλ, πνιύ δπλαηώλ αλζξώπσλ, πνπ ζπζίαζαλ όια, αθόκα θαη ηελ ίδηα ηε δσή ηνπο, γηα ράξε ηνπ ιανύ ηνπο. Υπήξραλ πνιινί ηέηνηνη άλζξσπνη αθόκα θαη ζηε δηθή καο επνρή. Υπήξραλ ινηπόλ πνιινί άλζξσπνη πνπ έδσζαλ ηε δσή ηνπο γηα ην θαιό ηνπ ιανύ ηνπο θαη ηνπ δηθνύ ηνπο έζλνπο. Υπάξρνπλ επίζεο άλζξσπνη πνπ ζπζηάδνπλ ηε δσή ηνπο γηα ράξε ηεο δηθήο ηνπο ηάμεο. Πνην είλαη ην θνηλό ραξαθηεξηζηηθό όισλ απηώλ ησλ θαιώλ έξγσλ; Απηή ε αγάπε ηνπο πξνο ην ιαό ηνπο όζν θαιή θαη λα είλαη, είλαη ε αγάπε κόλν πξνο ην δηθό ηνπο ιαό. θαη ηαπηόρξνλα κ' απηή ππάξρεη θαη κίζνο πξνο ηνπο αλζξώπνπο άιισλ θπιώλ θαη ηάμεσλ. Η αιεζηλή όκσο θαη γλήζηα αγάπε, ε επάξεζηε ζηνλ Θεό δελ κπνξεί λα έρεη κίζνο, απηή αγθαιηάδεη ηα πάληα, είλαη θαζνιηθή. Φξεηάδεηαη άζθεζε, ρξεηάδεηαη θόπνο, ρξεηάδεηαη λα αλαγθάδνπκε ηνλ εαπηό καο λα θάλνπκε ην θαιό. Πξέπεη λα απνζηξαθνύκε ην θαθό, ηελ νπνηαδήπνηε αδηθία θαη λα ζηξαθνύκε ζηελ αιήζεηα. Φξεηάδεηαη αγώλαο γηα λα θάλνπκε θαιά έξγα. Μόλν ηόηε, όηαλ, κε κεγάιεο θαη επίκνλεο πξνζπάζεηεο, θαζαξίδνπκε ηελ θαξδηά καο θαη έηζη πξνζειθύνπκε ηε ράξε ηνπ Θενύ, ηόηε, όηαλ απηή ε ράξε αλάβεη ζηελ θαξδηά καο ηελ ζεία αγάπε, ηελ αγάπε πξνο όινπο ηνπο αλζξώπνπο, ε νπνία δελ κηζεί θαλέλαλ, κόλν ηόηε απηή ε αγάπε, καδί κε ηελ πίζηε, καο αλνίγεη δξόκν πξνο ηελ Βαζηιεία ηνπ Θενύ. Λνηπόλ, δελ είλαη αξθεηά κόλν ηα θαιά έξγα θαη δελ αξθεί κόλν ε εζηθή, ρξεηάδεηαη θαη ε πίζηε. Γηόηη κόλν ε Θξεζθεία, κόλν ε Πίζηε ζηνλ Θεό θαη ε θνηλσλία καδί Τνπ καο δίλεη ηε δύλακε λα θάλνπκε γλήζηα θαιά θαη επάξεζηα ζηνλ Θεό έξγα. Απηή ηελ δύλακε δελ ηελ δίλεη ε εζηθή θαη κεγάιν ιάζνο θάλνπλ απηνί πνπ λνκίδνπλ όηη κπνξνύκε λα αληηθαηαζηήζνπκε ηελ ζξεζθεία κε θάπνηα εζηθή δηδαζθαιία. ORTHODOXY GOES POLYNESIAN! For those who think that Orthodoxy does not take part in missionary activity, here is a fine example to debunk that myth. Some of the first missionaries of the Orthodox faith were St. Paul and the rest of the Apostles, which are obvious. Others, such as St. Patrick of Ireland and Ss. Cyril and Methodios are wellknown as well. Recently, Orthodoxy has made in-roads in Polynesia, and more specifically Fiji. Credit to the blog Mystagogy for bringing this to my attention. The Metropolitan of New Zealand Amphilochios in Rhodes by Peggy Dokou August, 11, 2009 Romfea.org The Metropolitan of New Zealand Amphilochios is found in Rhodes during his summer intermission for the occasion of the first ordination of an Orthodox priest from the Islands of Fiji, whose name is Bartholomew. The ordination will be performed by the Metropolitan of New Zealand himself at the Monastery of Thari, which is expected to take place next month. Interestingly the new cleric will remain in Rhodes to train for his new office and then he will go to his future parish on the Island of Fiji. Sacred Mission The Sacred Metropolis of New Zealand has been characterized by the Ecumenical Patriarch as an office that is missionary in nature. It has under its oversight New Zealand and the Islands of the South Pacific, which includes Fiji, Tonga and Samoa and the nearby island groups. In 1970 it was established by the Archbishop of Australia - whom it was under at that time. 6
His Eminence the Metropolitan of New Zealand spoke about his visit to Rhodes which is his particular homeland. The goal of my visit to Rhodes is to come to my homeland every time leisure permits, which brings me joy, strength and courage towards the continuance of my work which I am accomplishing on the far side of the world. New Zealand is a country that is developing very slowly. The people there are good and we live harmoniously. What is your Orthodox flock there like? We are 5,000 Greeks and approximately 10,000 of Slavic descent (Russians, Serbs, Bulgarians, etc.). And beyond that we have started to expand also toward the native element. The New Zealanders are either of Anglo-Saxon descent or the indigenous Maori. Are there problems in New Zealand with the Diaspora? The future of Orthodoxy looks auspicious. Many express a desire to embrace Orthodox Christianity which inspires in them respect and trust. Now we have baptized quite a few who are from the Island of Fiji, situated in the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean and being at a distance of three hours from New Zealand by flight. Do you have the support from the Ecumenical Patriarchate? The Ecumenical Patriarchate supports us very much and oversees the Metropolis of New Zealand. The Patriarchate desires to be ubiquitous and be the first to step into these areas, for there are problems in the lands of the Diaspora along with the other Orthodox Patriarchates (Russian, Serbian, etc.). We try to be organized and to offer what we can to Orthodox and whoever desires to embrace our religion. 7

GREEK LANGUAGE CLASSES 2009 This year Mrs. Theodora Hatzis will be offering a course called Greek for Travelers at Confederation College. This course will provide beginner level learners planning to travel to Greek-speaking countries with words, expressions, questions, sentences and tips needed for specific situations such as greeting and introducing themselves to people.
