Α Εωθινόν Η *********************************************************************************** The Duty of Almsgiving and the Hope of a Return From God By His Eminence Metropolitan Daniel of Kaisariani, Vyronas and Hymettus In the period preceding the feast of the divine epiphany there is conducted in our Church a Fundraiser of Love. Believers are called to offer their alms for the relief of our needy brethren. This Fundraiser of Love is more necessary now in this prevailing economic, social and humanitarian crisis which affects more and more an increasingly larger portion of our people. We judge the building up and enhancement of this ministry will reflect the way we live philanthropically and give to charity. 1. The Duty of Almsgiving As it is taught by the word of God, almsgiving is a religious practice, and not merely social and altruistic. This is why almsgiving is linked to the liturgical life. Generosity towards the poor is part of the conduct of divine worship and the eucharistic assembly of the Church. In the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ, almsgiving together with prayer and fasting are the three pillars of the spiritual life. It is certain that in order for the faithful to approach the Bridegroom of the Church, they must help their neighbor (1 John 3:17).The celebration of the Mystery of the Divine Eucharist requires the brotherly distribution of goods (1 Corinthians 11:20). To glorify God, the faithful must freely give and sow generosity, because "God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 6:9). 2. The Value of Almsgiving The Wisdom Writings of the Old Testament present the view that alms given to the poor acquire value, because a) it is considered a loan to God Himself (Proverbs 19:17) and b) it is considered a sacrifice of praise to God (Wisdom of Sirach 35:2). The Lord taught His disciples to give alms without hoping for a return (Matthew 6:1-4), gave meaning to almsgiving that the offering was being made to Himself (Matthew 25:31-46), and established almsgiving as a requirement for someone to be His disciple and to follow Him without regretting the abandonment of their goods (Matthew 19:21). 3. The Duty of Almsgiving Gives the Merciful One a Certain Hope for a Return from God "Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble. The Lord protects and preserves them they are counted among the blessed in the land He does not give them over to the desire of their foes. The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness" (Psalm 40 (41):1-3). 4. The Forms of Almsgiving The Prophets pointed out the ways to practice almsgiving. They expanded the scope to cover many types of behaviors which express compassion, justice, respect and consolation to the helpless people around us (Ezekiel 18:7). 5. The Punishment of the Uncharitable Ignoring the poor combined with luxurious and wasteful living is condemned and subject to severe punishment, like that of Sodom (Ezekiel 16:49; Proverbs 14:21). 6. When A Believer Denies Himself of His Goods, Through Almsgiving He Stores a Treasure in Heaven, According to the Command of the Lord "Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Luke 12:33-34).

The Gospel of Luke 17:12-19 At that time, as Jesus entered a village, He was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said: "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When He saw them He said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus's feet, giving Him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And He said to him: "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well." "In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world"(st. John 16:33). The Only One and the Unique One, the Conqueror of the World, with these words, teaches His followers not to be afraid of the world. Indeed, the world appears very strong; however, is not the One Who created the world, stronger than the world? The world is very frightening for him who does not know that God rules the world and that He has the authority to hold it in existence as long as He wills and to return it into non-existence whenever He wills. But, to him who knows that, the world is not frightening. Compared to Christ the Lord, this world is as a fabric woven of weakness itself; while in Christ the Lord, there is not a single weakness. To him who does not know that, the world is frightening and he who knows that, has no fear of the world. The world has loaned us a body and because of that it wants to acquire our soul. How can the world overpower us if we stand as soldiers of the Conqueror of the world? The Conqueror of the World gives us weapons for the battle. By His example, He teaches us how to fight it, reveals the hidden enemy, shows us the path of attack and retreat, holds us with His hand, protects us under His wing, feeds us by His Life-giving Body and more, He encourages us by shouting: "Take courage!" Brethren, what then can the world do when its defeat is sealed with the victory of Christ? O Lord, the Conqueror of the World and our victorious commander, be close to us always that we may not become frightened and direct us, that we may always be close to You in heart, mind and soul.

Μεγαλύτερη αρρώστια είναι τό νά πιστέψη ό άνθρωπος στον λογισμό του ότι έχει κάποια αρρώστια. Ό λογισμός αυτός τού δημιουργεί άγχος, τον κ άνει νά στενοχωριέται, νά μήν εχη όρεξη γιά φαγητό, νά μήν μπορή νά κοιμηθή, νά παίρνη φάρμακα, και τελικά αρρωσταίνει, ενώ ήταν καλά.νά είναι άρρωστος κανείς και να κάνη θεραπεία, αυτό το καταλαβαίνω άλλα νά είναι υγιής καί νά νομίζη ότι είναι άρρωστος και νά άρρωσταίνη στά καλά καθούμενα, αυτό είναι Ένας λ.χ., ενώ έχει και σωματική καί πνευματική δύναμη, δεν μπορεί νά κάνη τίποτε, γιατί έχει πιστέψει στον λογισμό πού τοϋ λέει ότι δεν είναι καλά, με αποτέλεσμα νά σβήνη σωματικά καί πνευματικά. Δεν είναι ότι λέει ψέματα.αν ό άνθρωπος πιστέψη ότι κάτι έχει, πανικοβάλλεται, τσακίζεται, καί δεν έχει μετά κουράγιο νά κάνη τίποτε. Έτσι αχρηστεύεται χωρίς λόγο. Έρχονται μερικοί στο Καλύβι πού είναι τελείως τσακισμένοι. Μου λέει ό λογισμός ότιέχω έιτζ, λένε καί το πιστεύουν. Τους ρωτάω: Μήπως συνέβη εκείνο, εκείνο;. Όχι, μου λένε. Τότε άδικα στενοχωριέσαι. Πήγαινε νά κάνης μιά εξέταση, γιά νά σου φύγη ό λογι-σμός. Καί άν γίνη ή εξέταση καί βρουν ότι έχω;, λένε μερικοί καί δεν μ άκούν καί βασανίζονται. Ένώ αυτοί πού άκούν, κάνουν εξέταση, βλέπουν ότι δέν έχουν τίποτεκαί,νά δήτε, το πρόσωπο τους αλλάζει, το κουράγιο επανέρχεται. Οι άλλοι άπό τήν στενοχώρια ξαπλώνουν στο κρεββάτι καί ούτε νά φάνε δέν θέλουν. Εντάξει, έχεις έιτζ. Γιά τον Θεό δέν υπάρχει δύσκολο πρόβλημα. Άν ζήσης πιο πνευματικά, έξομολογήσαι, κοινω νάς κ.λπ., θά βοηθηθής.- Πώς ξεκινάει, Γέροντα, καί νομίζει κάποιος ότι είναι άρρωστος;- Σιγά-σιγά καλλιεργεί αυτόν τόν λογισμό. Πολλές φορές μπορεί νά ύπάρχη κάποια αιτία, άλλα νά μήν είναι κάτι σοβαρό. Βγάζει μετά καί ό λογισ μός κάτι ακόμη καί το μεγαλοποιεί. Όταν ήμουν στην Μονή Στομίου, ήταν ένας οικογενειάρχης στην Κόνιτσα π ού νόμιζε ότι είχε φυματίωση. Δέν άφηνε ούτε τήν γυναίκα του νά πάη κοντά του. Μήν πλησιάζης, της έλεγε, θά κόλλησης. Σέ ένα ξύλο κρεμούσε ή καημένη το καλάθι με το φαγητό και τού το έδινε από μακριά. Ή φουκαριάρα είχε λειώσει. Τά παιδιά του τά κακόμοιρα από μακριά τον έβλεπαν. Αυτός εν τω μεταξύ δεν είχε τίποτε, αλλά, επειδή ό ήλιος δεν τον έβλεπε ήταν κλεισμένος μέσα καί τυλιγμένος συνέχεια μέ τις κουβέρτες -, ήταν κίτρινος και πίστευε ότι έχει χτικιό. Σηκώνομαι και πάω στό σπίτι του. Μόλις μέ είδε, μου λέει: Μη μέ πλησιάζης, καλόγερε, μήν κόλλησης κι εσύ, καί έρχεται κόσμος εκεί στό μοναστήρι. Έχω χτικιό. Ποιος σου είπε, μωρέ, ότι έχεις χτικιό;, τού λέω. Ή γυναίκα του έφερε να μέ κεράση γλυκό καρύδι. Άνοιξε το στόμα σου, τού λέω. Θα κάνης υπακοή τώρα. Το άνοιξε δεν ήξερε τί θα κάνω. Βάζω τό καρύδι μέσα στό στόμα του και τό γυρνάω δυότρεις φορές καί ύστερα τό παίρνω καί τό τρώω. Μή, μη, θά κόλλησης!, φώναζε. Τί θά κολλήσω! Τίποτε δεν έχεις, τού λέω. Αν είχες χτικιό, χαμένο τό είχα νά τό κάνω αυ τό; Σήκω νά βγούμε εξω. Λέω στην γυναίκα του: Πέταξε τα όλα, φάρμακα, κουβέρτες. Τόν σηκώνω καί βγαίνουμε έξω. Έπειτα από τρία χρόνια πού ήταν κλεισμένος μέσα κοιτούσε τόν κόσμο παράξενα. Υστερα, σιγά-σιγά, πήγε καί Διδαχές Γέρων Παίσιου στην δουλειά του. Τί είναι ό λογισμός, όταν τόν καλλιεργής! Μεγαλύτερη αρρώστια είναι τό νά πιστέψη ό άνθρωπος στον λογισμό του ότι έχει κάποια αρρώστια. Ό λογισμός αυτός τού δημιουργεί άγχος, τον κάνει νά στενοχωριέται, νά μήν εχη όρεξη γιά φαγητό, νά μήν μπορή νά κοιμηθή, νά παίρνη φάρμακα, και τελικά αρρωσταίνει, ενώ ήταν καλά. Νά είναι άρρωστος κανείς και να κάνη θεραπεία, αυτό το καταλαβαίνω άλλα νά είναι υγιής καί νά νομίζη ότι είναι άρρωστος και νά άρρωσταίνη στά καλά καθούμενα, αυτό είναι... Ένας λ.χ., ενώ έχει και σωματική καί πνευματική δύναμη, δεν μπορεί νά κάνη τίποτε, γιατί έχει πιστέψει στον λογισμό πού τοϋ λέει ότι δεν είναι καλά, με αποτέλεσμα νά σβήνη σωματικά καί πνευματικά. Αυτός εν τω μεταξύ δεν είχε τίποτε, αλλά, επειδή ό ήλιος δεν τον έβλεπε ήταν κλεισμένος μέσα καί τυλιγμένος συνέχεια μέ τις κουβέρτες -, ήταν κίτρινος και πίστευε ότι έχει χτικιό. Σηκώνομαι και πάω στό σπίτι του. Μόλις μέ είδε, μου λέει: Μη μέ πλησιάζης, καλόγερε, μήν κόλλησης κι εσύ, καί έρχεται κόσμος εκεί στό μοναστήρι. Έχω χτικιό. Ποιος σου είπε, μωρέ, ότι έχεις χτικιό;, τού λέω. Ή γυναίκα του έφερε να μέ κεράση γλυκό καρύδι. Άνοιξε το στόμα σου, τού λέω. Θα κάνης υπακοή τώρα. Το άνοιξε δεν ήξερε τί θα κάνω. Βάζω τό καρύδι μέσα στό στόμα του και τό γυρνάω δυό-τρεις φορές καί ύστερα τό παίρνω καί τό τρώω. Μή, μη, θά κόλλησης!, φώναζε. Τί θά κολλήσω! Τίποτε δεν έχεις, τού λέω. Αν είχες χτικιό, χαμένο τό είχα νά τό κάνω αυτό; Σήκω νά βγούμε εξω. Λέω στην γυναίκα του: Πέταξε τα όλα, φάρμακα, κουβέρτες... Τόν σηκώνω καί βγαίνουμε έξω. Έπειτα από τρία χρόνια πού ήταν κλεισμένος μέσα κοιτούσε τόν κόσμο παράξενα. Υστερα, σιγά-σιγά, πήγε καί στην δουλειά του. Τί είναι ό λογισμός, όταν τόν καλλιεργής!
