THE TRIODION: A Guide to Prepare Us for Great Lent The Triodion marks the beginning of a time of preparation for the spiritual journey of Lent, a time for Orthodox Christians to draw closer to God through worship, prayer, fasting, and acts of charity. Here is a summary of the Sundays leading up to Great and Holy Lent. First Sunday: Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee It is easier to be prideful than to be humble. Many of us can easily get caught up in how "awesome" we are or how well we did. Although there is nothing wrong with acknowledging one's achievement, it is prideful and negative if we use our achievements to point out the faults or flaws in others. The mere fact that we point out other people's flaws makes our own flaw of pride more obvious! The Gospel teaches us that we are to spend our time praising God, and not ourselves. For Jesus states, "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Luke 18:14) Second Sunday: Sunday of the Prodigal Son The story of the Prodigal Son teaches us about God's compassion' when we have a "change of heart" and come to Him in repentance and humility. The world entices us all with wealth, power, and much more. Those things are temporary and can be taken away at the blink of an eye regardless of how much we have "invested" of ourselves. However, God does not take away His love, mercy, and protection. In fact, we are abundantly blessed with these things when we commit daily to following the Father. Third Sunday: Sunday of the Last Judgment The third Sunday of Lent, known as Sunday of the Last Judgment Christ offers us a very strong and clear message about how we will be judged when He returns. The Gospel of Matthew 25:31-46 teaches us that we are expected to give, to sacrifice, to care for, and to love even the least of our brethren. In a "me first" society, this can be a daunting task. We are bombarded with messages that tell us the opposite. To borrow the quotation from President John F. Kennedy, we should ask not what our neighbor can do for us... rather we should ask what we can do for our neighbor! Fourth Sunday: Forgiveness Sunday Forgiveness Sunday is the final Sunday before we begin Great and Holy Lent. The message of Forgiveness Sunday is one with great impact. We cannot begin to think about reconciliation with God if we cannot even reconcile with our neighbors. But our Lord gives us three points of guidance regarding forgiveness, fasting, and charity. like the Sunday of the Last Judgment, the focus of our journey is not just on ourselves. The lesson reaffirms the Greatest Commandment to love God AND to love our neighbors as ourselves. The Four Circles. HELLENIC DANCE TROUPES February 2015 I d like to congratulate this year s dancers for their excellent achievements at the Hellenic Dance Festival (HDF). On the weekend of January 16 th, Winston-Salem Dance Troupes took two groups to HDF to compete in the Junior and Advance Senior categories. Our Junior group, who was directed by Chelsea Tsiolkas and assisted by Alexis Shepherd, placed second with a Superior medal and received the Folk Expression award for their rendition and singing of Ola ta Polakia in their category. Our Senior group, who was directed by Stavros Karagiorgis, also placed second in their category with a Superior medal. This year s festival was a fantastic event with over 900 participants. Our Metropolis is very fortunate to have an event that perpetuates our culture and heritage through folk expression for our youth. We are also fortunate to have able bodies that continue to lead this event in the right direction. The management team chaired by Stavros Karagiorgis very much made it a success. Thanks to all our parents for supporting the event. I believe everyone had a wonderful time. A special thank you to Sandy Ziogas for assisting with costumes and to Elizabeth Dallis and Father Demetri for chaperoning. On February 8 th, Father Demetri will be making the presentations for the awards. Thank you!
